Kanye West To Urge Presidential Candidates To Focus On Education In New PSAs

Superstar rapper Kanye West and his Kanye West Foundation has partnered with Strong America Schools and will be featured in a series of public service announcements (PSAs) urging the presidential candidates to address issues within America's educational system.

West is the spokesman for the Ed in '08 campaign, a $60 million dollar nonpartisan initiative supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and ironically, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

The PSAs will feature West calling on each candidate to focus on improving America's schools as an important part of their presidential campaigns.

In addition to the PSAs, West and his mother Dr. Donda West will make a live appearance during an ED in '08 event.

"For many youth in the U.S., there is a sense of hopelessness owed largely to cutbacks in federal and state funding for educational programming," Dr. Donda West said. "Our foundation focuses on providing qualitative programs in partnership with schools and communities. Engaging with the ED in '08 campaign is yet another way that working together can make a significant difference."

Almost 1 million children drop out of school each year.

According to recent studies, most states are failing to meet state-set goals for graduation rates under the federally mandated No Child Left Behind law.

Almost 1 in 4 students who start ninth grade will not earn their diploma.

"We look forward to working with the Kanye West Foundation to raise awareness about America's education crisis and urge the presidential candidates to put forward a plan to improve America's schools because in every community in America, too many children are leaving school without the skills to be ready to succeed in college, career and life," said Marc Lampkin, executive director of ED in '08.

West is currently preparing his new album Graduation, which hits stores on Roc-A-Fella/Island Def Jam on September 11.

Honestly, would you all agree that the current state of Hip-Hop is evolving into something so amazing. Hip-Hop is balancing itself. No longer will there be a set region (city/state) that will regulate or own the culture. We have so many delegates (whether socially conscious or street) that the culture will continue to drive itself. So long as "Soldier Boy" type Tom foolery get's rammed down the eye balls and ear drums of youth culture, I guess Hip-Hop will continue to be spoiled, abused, raped, deprived, and mutilated beyond recognizable means. Educate, educate, educate...Stop waiting for the schools to teach. Pick up a book and feed your f@#$ing families.

he's not telling everyone to go to college or nothing like that because on the real college isn't 4 everyone. But what he's saying is that education is important, like i said above at least graduate h.s... A lot of kids is dropping out before they get a diploma and find out that in life you can't do ish except sell drugs or be a wannabe rapper without a diploma or at least a g.e.d...
But at the same time i will admit that It's not just on the school system and that it's important 4 us to take iniative and educate ourselves. IMO... everyone should read 6 books a year outside of schools or work material.

JAY Z TOPS FORBES' RICHEST RAPPERS LIST

Forbes has compiled several lists ranking the most affluent business men and women but never a list devoted exclusively to hip-hop. Now that rap music has become big business, it was only right that Forbes took the time to recognize the hustle of hip-hop entrepreneurs. Unsurprisingly, Def Jam prez Jay-Z finished at the top of the list with an estimated $34 million grossed in 2006. 50 Cent is not too far behind Hov, having grossed a whopping $32 million last year. (Forbes' list is based solely on 2006 income.) It's also interesting to see six hip-hop producers in the Top 10. A rundown of the list after the jump:

    Jay-Z - $34 million
    50 Cent - $32 million
    Diddy - $28 million
    Timbaland - $21 million
    Dr. Dre - $20 million
    Eminem - $18 million
    Snoop Dogg - $17 million
    Kanye West - $17 million
    Pharrell Williams - $17 million
    Scott Storch - $17 million
    Ludacris - $16 million
    T.I. - $16 million
    OutKast - $14 million
    Lil Jon - $14 million
    Ice Cube - $13 million
    Jermaine Dupri - $12 million
    Swizz Beatz - $12 million
    Chamillionaire - $11 million
    The Game - $11 million
    Yung Joc - $10 million

I hope that this will help make positive steps to a more intelligent representation of rap as a whole. I'm sure people didn't look at ATCQ or De La and say, "Those cats look stupid."

This gangster/hustler image doesn't need to be educated in school. And that's just it. "IMAGE". The youth believe that image to the core and should be presented with a more educated image to aspire to. Rappers themselves should take responsibility for doing this.

If you LISTEN to Kanye's albums you understand his reasoning for dropping out of school. He isn't encouraging everyone else to do what he did, but his albums are about HIM and HIS dream. I don't see anything hypocritical about him promoting education, hell why not!? He isn't knocking education in his music, college just wasn't for HIM. Bill Gates is a drop out as well, no one commenting about his foundation... anything to down a brotha.

We ALL know our education system is screwed right now.
Just look at what the show "Shaq's Big Challenge" proved. When I was in school, we had recess every day, and in junior high you had to take P.E. Now kids get to choose, so they sit around on their fat asses and get even more obese.
Along with that, this laziness leads to laziness in the classroom, and I think if we don't do something, we are looking at a rather bleak future.

the fact of the matter is this... high school is your first of many accreditations someone recieves in his/her lifetime.  It shows that you have the ability to stick to a goal and complete it.  Thus, graduating from school is just as much patience as it is the ability to show people that you are willing to learn.  It's hard to really construct a reality about the situation is parents aren't willing to teach.  That's the reason why kids drop out... not music or fashion(although that the lazy man's way out).  I applaud Kanye and others for attempting to free minds about american schooling, but realize not matter how much flowers and fences you got outside your house... if it's family discord within... what's the point???  The american school system is just like it's financial system... capitalistic.  That's what makes this country great... the fact that you can do anything to make a buck.  It's sad though that you now have to send your children to private schools to properly teach them.  I hear a lot a comments on allhiphop and I value everyone's opinions, but no one really has the commitment to change.  One person can't do it.  The power is in the masses... not just some.  Our country is just like yourself when you look in the mirror.... You see what you want, and ignore how you feel inside... Our system has a fresh bucket on, new sneaks, the flyest gear... dressed up real nice right?  Looks good to everyone else.. but underneath that $50 wife beater, is a real life for free wife beater, or another fake A$$ gangster... we have no guts.
