The race for the top of the pop chart started yesterday (September 11) when highly anticipated albums by rappers 50 Cent and Kanye West hit stores.

According to early sales reports, Kanye West's Island Def Jam album Graduation is on pace to sell over 750,000 copies the first week in stores, while 50 Cent's Shady/Aftermath/Interscope album Curtis is expected to move around 550,000 units.

West's Graduation is expected to debut at the top of the Billboard Top 200 charts next week, while Curtis will battle for the #2 spot with country music star Kenny Chesney.

Chesney's new album Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates is expected to move over 500,000 units and the album could possibly push 50's album to the #3 position on the chart next week.

A number of retail outlets have said that West's Graduation is outselling 50 Cent's Curtis by at least 2 to 1.

In related news, West is dominating YouTube's charts.

The rapper's Strong American Schools' ED in '08 education reform Public Service Announcement (PSA) was one of the top 20 most viewed YouTube videos last week, garnering over 130,00 viewers.

50 Cent also tapped YouTube while promoting Curtis.

50, along with Common and Polow Da Don recently named San Francisco rapper Conceit the winner of the YouTube On the Rise rap competition.

Conceit will record a professional single for G-Unit/Interscope Records, a $10,000 Guitar Center Shopping Spree, a Boss BR-1600 Digital Multitrack Recorder and a Roland MV-8800 Production Studio.

Graduation is a way better CD, i've listened to it 3 times already.

Today is 9/12....

I'm not putting faith in a IDJ estimate. Last time Jay Z was "on a pace" to sell a million copies in his first week, and everyone got caught up in the hype.  Then it was 850K. Then 700K.  He finally ended up in the 600K range.

BTW, 750,000/550,000 doesn't equal 2.  Someone needs to brush up on their math or get a better calculator.

@ Walt Jay...they said a # of retailers said Kanye outsold 50 2 to 1.  That doesnt mean that their official #'s will equal that but at some stores it did, which is all you need to justify the title.

@ Trot Foucused no one is saying that these are official #'s but it's good to hear what people and stores around the nation are saying...especially when some are reporting 2:1 sales...cant not beleive that...

@ theMC...how was that?  I tried to get home in time to see it.  50 was bitter huh?  Serves him right he's jack ass

I hope Kenny Chesney takes the #2 spot i'll laugh my ass off!!!

Yo, substance and talent over controversy.  50 is a great showman in the realm that he always beef's with someone to boost interest in his music, he does go out and get good tracks to rhyme over but what is he really saying? NOTHING!!!!! It is style over substance.  I respect him for his ability to entertain people and stuff, I won't take that away but we need more these days, we all know you were shot 9 times, we know about vitamin water already, we know you got paper, but he is not saying anything.  Kanye may whine and carry on and have tantrums but he believes that he is truly putting out the hottest thing possible and obviously people are buying into that as well, he is pushing the envelop, he is stepping his game up, his skills get better, he is trying to drop social commentary, he is addressing peoples needs on different levels, he is taking it back to skills and not hype.

Personally, I bought Graduation because Kanye is gonna give u something different as opposed to 50 doing the same thing he been doing since he came in the game. Plus I'm tired of 50's gimmicks: start a beef when my album drops to increase sales. At best, Fif is an above average rapper.

damn, the whole time 50 kept saying that it was smart for kanye to go up against him, implying that the "beef" would help kanye but anyone who has listened to 50's "Curtis" will know, 50 probably used the beef to sell his album. It sounds like throw away songs from his last album. This is really great for music though, finally we can get back to good music.  I guess the general public (imagine 50's voice) is not in a space where they want garbage ass music anymore, talking about a bunch of $hit they don't do curtis....step ya game up.

Tripping off of 1st day of sales is like tripping off an alley oop dunk right after the opening tap. It's impressive but there's a long game still ahead.

I do believe record companies buy their artist records to boost 1st week sales (Didn't 50 cent say Def Jam would purchase 200,000 Kanye records a few weeks ago?)

I also think 50 probably had some Interscope cop some of his albums too.

I've heard both albums and will buy them today, sit down and vibe with em. What I heard (online) I was very dissapointed in both. I Do agree this is Kanye's 3rd best album. 50's album has some heat but nothing creative or new (Even for gansta sh*t)

Honestly Common's album is better than both of these dudes with less pub and better lyrics.

Sad that all this pub is going to two average Rappers/MC's but great show/businessmen.

its kinda funny how shit turns around. 50 is expected to sell like a million a week once his shit drops but when put against competition like kanye, he's struggling to keep the lime light on him because if you look at, anytime when 50 has dropped an album, who was his competition really. Yeah he took out Ja with his first album but there was a hype during get rich that was undeniable & ppl were intrigued. Hell ppl were intrigued if he's second album would live up to expectations as the first (which it didn't) which is why is second album sold so well. Not to discredit the massacre but he got lucky because of the singles he put out was catchy to ppl who don't know shit about real hip hop & plus the media really had him hyped up along with the piece of shit movie he had out too. In essence, he really sold his first album off of talent alone & thats because there was hunger pains there. Those pains go away once you make like 25 or 50 million dollars within 1 year after your album drops.

kanye on the other hand, even though he might do or say some shit that is off the wall or make you scratch your head, still cares about his music & the product he puts out. not to say 50 doesn't but its different because 50 does it to sell records, kanye does it for the art form & love of his music. the college drop out in my opinion was a more classic album than get rich just because of overall content & it actually captured true life experience that your ordinary person can relate too. I mean how many niggaz you know get shot 9 times then go platinum? ppl want shit they can relate to. talking about guns, drugs & how many niggaz a man can kill gets old after awhile but empowerment & postive movement never does.

"Each one, teach one" (by method man) is what kanye west is about & you can tell just by the message in is music & who keeps in his entourage (ppl like common, mos def, talib, etc...) which is why he's gonna out sell 50. i mean hell, lloyd banks, young buck & the rest of the g-unit are falling off slowly but surely while while the good music crew by kanye is steadily rising.

I got both albums i listen to all hiphop.

Curtis>>>>Graduation.
I like Kanyes joint but it dosent compare to the first 2
Curtis is better than the massacre.
Overall 50's album is what urban white kids who wanna be gangsta listen to and fake thugs who wanna be hard.I like 50's album cause its  comedy nothing more. The correction title should have been Fiction the Curtis story.

Kanyes album is geared more towards real hiphop lovers and the new found 50 and g unit haters. If this was 2001-04 all over it wouldnt even be competition. This albums correct title should be Summer School cause in 1 month nobody will be playing this

I personally wanna take back both and get another Talib Kweli and Common cause neither 1 of these guys get the correct recognition for lyrical skills. And Kanye please promote Commons albums because he is top 5 when it comes to real life lyrics not glorified dreams

Some of ya'll sound like fools "people hating on 50". Just because 50 has sold all these records doesn't mean he is good, the reason why he has so many record sales is because of MM and Dr.Dre. All of 50 albums sound the same and the people that buy 50 music just don't understand what is good quality music or they just settle for less. From Kanye first album, it sounded different than any other album at the time. His second album was different from the first, kinda like he using that "OutKast formula" going against the norm. Without Dre and MM 50 would be "insufficient funds".  50=hypocrite

CO-SIGN.
THATS REAL SHIT.
We got to remember one thing when it comes to music in this day & age, ppl only want to sell records only to make money & get fame. you have real artist who make real music for the ppl. kanye is a perfect example of what a real artist is. not because of what he says but his actions. ppl calling kanye a bitch becaue he was dissappointed at the mtv awards but not realizing that kanye wanted to put a stepping stone on the map for black ppl to open up with a strong presence. his song "stronger" might not be the most talked about record right now, but it sends a positive message that ppl would like to hear or need to hear.

ppl be acting sometimes like all black ppl are about is big rims, cars, guns & drugs when were so much more than that. thats why kanye is selling more than 50 right now because ppl are starting to understand.

Everyone has their own take on how they feel about the situation, and some of you go so far that it's in ya feelings.  50 and Kanye are great at what they do...and that's that...nothing more.  At the end of the day...they both contribute to hip-hop, make money, and expand their fan base.

But for the record... when everything dies down (a few weeks)... 50 will end up selling more records... sorry... history has proven that.  If I'm wrong...then I'm wrong....and much love to 'Ye.

It's better than 80% of the shit out right now and Willie D go hard pimpin..Mac nice and I just checked him out the other day but he can't see Face or Bun and both are signed to Rap-A-Lot..Now No Limit did bring the South more light but P just good at stealing ni99az formulas and upgrading them..Without Suave House or Rap-A-Lot we probably wouldn't have ever heard of Cash Money or No Limit..It's not fair to compare them labels bc you can't knock the ni99az that got us started and you can't knock the ni99az that took it to the next level..I think most of the success at Cash Money and No Limit can be attributed to Beats by the Pound and Mannie Fresh..Once them Beats by the Pound ni99az left No Limit they went down..Once Mannie left Cash Money they went even further down..All in all J. Prince and T. Draper came up with the blueprint and P just upgraded it...Most of y'all probably don't even remember when Suave and Rap-A-Lot was beefing though..By the way, wtf happened to the ni99a Tela? Look at paul wall, mike jones, etc. Those are h-town example rappers talkin about rims and platinum grills which is something that cashmoney made popular. Look at all these cats that do the same thing. its really too many to count. and as far as mac, that nigga is very nice with the flow, he just got caught up with a 40 yr bid so nobody will probably hear from him again. i would have to say he better than bun. I know a bunch of you saw 106 yesterday when they had both 50 and Kanye on the show. 50 compared himself to Muhammad Ali!!! He should have been slapped for making that comparison because Ali is/was a transcendent figure in Black America. Ali united us through his skills in the ring and influenced Blacks to stand up to the oppression they faced during that time period. 50 on the other hand just creates WWF style beefs just to sell records. We have been talking about these two ever since Kanye announced that he was droppin on 9/11. I think that most of you with common sense already know that sales do not equate to good music. So it really doesn't matter who sells more, at least to me anyway. However, I know I'm about to contradict myself but I hope Kanye does outsell 50. And I only say that because I want people to use that as a wake up call. Rappers need to add a little more substance to their product because there is a lot of bullshit on the airwaves. And I'm not hating on anyone in particular but if you turn on the radio you'll see what I'm talking about.  I'm not saying all the gun talk, and drug talk has to stop but it would be nice if they toned it down. Or at least balanced the ratio out somewhat.  I  haven't heard 50's new album yet but I'm sure it sounds like a mixtape with some new girl style songs added to it. Btu I'm sure he's not saying anything inspiring.

That's not to say that you should go and spend your money to support child molesters or  sex offenders cuz they got that joint ;) but an old school dude like my myself will put on "Knee Deep" by Parliament/Funkadelic and bump that...someone tell me, where is the social relevance in that record? it was just a good record...seriously, I know a lot of y'all call yourselves hip hop purists, but when did lyrical content become mandatory to have a good song...I hope as many kids possible can empower themselves musically...instead the media and industry wants us all to compete for one spot; but I think there is room for all expression within hip hop, not just the ones that I like

No diss, just schooling you onto something. California was the king of the independent deals. When NWA & Too Short were selling stuff out of the trunks and then created their own little lables. (Too Short was on "45 Girls Records")

Geto Boys came afterwards and use to always be in Cally. We are the Geto Boyz 2nd home we bought their s**t so much.

As for No Limit and Master P. He even says in his books that he got his hustle living in Richmond Ca, watching E-40 and the Click hustle independently.

I'm not here to say which coast is best or any of that childish stuff, just schooling you on the West been getting independent scratch in Hip Hop all the way back in 79. THEN it went to the south.

Beverly Hills..50 supports Bush, Kanye speaks out for y'all bum ass ni99az and y'all turn y'all back on the ni99a bc he don't want to talk about guns, rims, and selling dope..He talks about shit that's important to him and inspirational music..50 talks about shit he ain't doing and he don't care what come out of his mouth to sell them cd's..I ain't making it a competition bc it ain't one..Intelligent ni99az gone roll with Ye and the ignorant ni99az buying into every publicity stunt and all the fake bullshit he spitting will roll with 50..That's it at the end of the day..If you going to buy into a ni99a gangsta image make sure the ni99a living that life.."

cal, i can see why 50 would sell more in baton rouge. thats the home of boosie and webbie(not too intelligent). People out there seem kinda slow and a few years behind other cities, no disrespect.

@westbankmarrero

How are you ridin on the ni**a King High and reppin NO...but b4 you said peopl in Baton Rouge are slow cuz they like Boosie and Webbie? are you bi-polar?

Niggaz in the NO love Boosie and Webbie. How are you talking this NOrleans b*tch stuff and then hate on the #2 and 3 stunnas that rep that area?

Help me understand that. By the way...P always tried to rep Richmond, CA.

In Australia we don't have a choice, 50 dropped last saturday and Kanye isn't out here 'till the next!

I bought Curtis but I think I need to listen to it more. I was expecting something new & exciting and while it's not a bad CD, I think I was expecting more passion or rawness or something that is just missing.

I don't know, I think I was expecting 'Curtis' to reveal more of himself in his this album than a peek at his pubic hair in one of  those 4 photos with the girl!

And call me a whinger, but I find it strange 50 doesn't thank his fans in the linear notes and says "Many thinks to Tony Yayo for bringing a fresh creative perspective to the recording of this album".... I don't know if that's a good thing or not???

@  A.C. from Dallas TEXAS thats your opinion about face being better than mac. I like cats that use metaphors, similies, with personification and actually switch the flow (fast, slow, etc) So thats a matter of what u like. I like Face, he a south legend in the game but, I just dont think he could fuck with Mac on some lyrical shit ya dig. No one will find out mac's full potential though since he locked up. Even though I think mac is better lyrically, I dont think he made better albums than face. Thats my opinion though just like I think Jay the best and some say B.I.G or Pac etc.

@ BayBoi   I like lyrical cats. Wayne is the only cat from N.O now that I actually can tolerate lyrically(even though he be trippin sometimes). But, those B.R cats(hot right now) cant even run through New Orleans throwback rappers(mystikal, Tre-8, Soulja Slim etc.) Truth is that right now wayne is the only one who actually seems like they want to get better meanwhile, other cats from N.O and B.R stuck on the same level from '96. B.G is a perfect example, that nigga been on that same flow since Chopper City(n.o classic album) shit matter of fact Tru Stories. Juvi aint make a classic since 400 degreez and he will still eat thru these B.R cats right now. So yea, niggas in n.o aint got that nice flow either but niggas in B.R aint even on their level. So yea, they're  slow until I hear some better lyrics from those cats. U would think that niggas like wayne trying to be lyrical would make niggas step their game up(especially hotboyz) but nope, same shit. But yea, niggas in N.O like webbie and them, but not everyone. I admit they make good club songs, but thats it. And before u talk about their album content, I have the albums, niggas spitting, but to me they aint coming hard enough. Thats why cats up north always dissing the south about garbage lyrics. These rap cats acting like its a game and cats like wayne, luda, even ti looks at it like a competition to be the best.

@ nercity07  thats cool ya dig, but cats right now are following cashmoney's formula(all that stuntin' shit all of that big rim shit, jewerly, even making it rain in clubs) I don't see niggas in the south(atleast where im at) riding on low-lows ya know. But yes, N.W.A, Short, etc. were first, but thats westcoast, not the south. Im talking about the south's independent scene, not cali.

no ye is crying he did the same shit whne mtv didnt give him no awards that year and he cried so much they gave him the awards the next year for just about the same damn songs lol
and we all know no one likes 50 bcuz he is on top and hip hop is competition so the leaders get little love at all
but ye is talented and 50 is too he might not be as good with his music but he a boss and ye still working for hov so he has to have some talent
but we should all just buy both bcuz they both have good albums
@gawgabwoy707
the whole rap game is a gimmick homie from ye to 50 to em all t.i
weezy
jeezy
its about gimmicks and saling urself
none of these dudes really wanna kill shit they wanna get rich just the ones who dont b@tch about it when they cant flip they gimmick
if dudes wanted to be hard they wouldnt rap they would just kill shit right???
ok so then i guess u dont like jeezy ,ti and wayne slim thuggg etc etc
97 percent of rap if u really want to brake it down is ignorant and i done seen ur name say a few ignorant songs was hot on the music comments so whats really good
people just cant face they envy 50 point blaNK
like if i felt ja rule was rolling with dudes who murdered my mother and had me shot up i wouldnt ride on em be 4real
now while alot of rappers are more true to themselves in there music like ye
dont knock the next man for his bcuz if rap didnt pay and these dudes had to do it for free guess what kanye ass,50 jay z all wouldnt do it at all trust me ...and we all know this ye vs 50 and jay and all this shit is for show

or jeezy doing a track wit gucci mane then tryna steal the track
then broadcasting how he would pay dudes if they brought his cjhian to him which led to that man shooting somebody to stay alive either right, thats cool tho right??
so 50 going after wack ass fat joe is wrong??
or you say he wrong for dissing hov
hov dissed his man for years over a position and a chic tho
or while we on it its cool for everybody but 50 to go at whoever they want
see what im saying here same shit just 50 on top so its like plzz knock him off to everyone
and kANYE IS ONE OF THE MOST ARROGANt DUDES IN THE GAME but since he going at 50 you like it wow

Yea, you sell yourself not a ni99a you grew up with or wanted to be or still do...You wouldn't work on your job for free but that's not to say you don't really enjoy your job..Don't nobody envy 50..I think the ni99a smart but ignorant all at the same time..As far as me saying wack songs are hot it's my personal opinion and I don't recall saying too many songs were hot..You just blowing hot air with that comment homebwoy..If you like 50 then like him but I don't have to and I don't..His first cd was fiyah..It's been downhill since then and once again that's my opinion..Everybody in the game ain't about gimmicks and some ni99az actually care about the shit they are putting out and aren't just trying to sell a certain image to people at any costs..We see where it got Pac and 50 know better..That's why he damn near going bankrupt signing street ni99az to help try and potray that image and with all the security he needs for his big ass mouth...

IF YOU NIGGAZ ARE GONNA CLAIM INTELLIGENCE, STOP ARGUING WITH OTHERS AND REALIZE, THESE ARE "ALL" OPINIONS. EACH AND EVERY ONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN. THE REAL HEADS OF THIS CULTURE HAVE PURCHASED BOTH AND STAYED OUT OF THE GRADE SCHOOL BICKERING.

SUPPORT THE JENA 6.

I JUST WANT HIPHOP AND MY PEOPLE TO WIN AND ON THIS SITE, WE'RE LOSERS! ALL WE DO IS DISRESPECT EACH OTHER, THEN TURN RIGHT AROUND AND TEAR DOWN A RAP ARTIST FOR DOING THE SAME.

HYPOCRITE IS RIGHT. :SMH:

WAKE UP AND LEARN TO "KEEP" YOUR BROTHERS, BLACK MEN!

IN CLOSING;

I REALLY DON'T BELEIVE ANY OF YOU ARE BUYING INTO KANYE'S IMAGE EITHER. I THINK MAYBE YOU JUST DON'T LIKE 50 CENT. FOR INSTANCE;
AFTER LISTENING TO KANYE, DID YOU STOP SELLING CRACK? OR GO OUT AND TRY TO INFLUENCE ANOTHER NOT TO SELL IT OR USE IT? I DOUBT IT. YOU CAN'T STOP BEEFING ON HERE. LMAO

SO WHAT CHANGES WILL "GRADUATION" MAKE? NONE OTHER THEN AIDING YOU GUYS WITH THE ABILITY TO TALK SHIT ABOUT ONE OF YOUR BROTHERS, AWHILE LONGER. THIS IS PITIFUL. I HAVE BOUGHT EVERY CD, EACH OF THESE MEN DROPPED. SOME STILL HAVE PLASTIC OVER THEM.

LISTENING TO FIF, DIDN'T MAKE ME WANT TO GET SHOT 9 NINES, SELL DRUGS, BEEF WITH OTHERS WHO TRIED TO HOLD ME BACK. NONE OF THAT, IT JUST MADE ME DANCE AND BOB MY HEAD.

LISTENING TO KANYE, DIDN'T MAKE ME WANT TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL, TAKE THE LORDS NAME IN VAIN, BELEIVE THAT I WAS A GOLD DIGGER NOR GO NAT TURNER ON THE GOVT. NONE OF THAT, IT JUST MADE ME DANCE AND BOB MY HEAD.

READING HOW MEAN AND CRITICAL MY PEOPLE GET WITH EACH OTHER ON THE NET, I CAN'T DIGEST ANY OF IT. IT JUST MAKES ME KEEP STANDING UP OUT HERE AND HOPING THAT MY PEOPLE WILL LEARN TO DISAGREE IN PRIVATE, LIKE THE WHITE FOLKS DO [I.E. THE KID ROCK, TOMMY LEE FIGHT, AS OF LATE]AND BRING IT TO YOUR BROTHERS ATTENTION OUT OF THE VIEW OF OTHERS. UNTIL WE ALL LEARN THAT, KANYE NOR FIF WOULD BE ABLE TO FUCK OR FIX SHIT, FOR US. I DON'T CARE HOW CONSCIOUS OR RECKLESS THEIR LYRICS AND IMAGES ARE. THEY ARE ONLY 2 BROTHERS IN THE SAME AMERICA AS YOU WHO HAPPEN TO STREET REPORT, WORLDWIDE ON HOW THEY VIEW IT.

STOP TAKING IT SO SERIOUSLY.

ONE LOVE
