Rapper Jay-Z In Negotiations With NJ For 'Rocawear Arena'

Jay-Z's popular clothing line Rocawear is in negotiations to become the naming-right pat to the Meadowlands arena.Jay-Z, who owns a portion of the New Jersey Nets, hopes to snag the rights to the arena's name, which is currently held by Continental Airlines.

The rapper faces competition from clothing brands Izod and Southpole, who also seek to have the 26-year-old arena named after their flagship brands.

According to the Bergen County Record, The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA), which is handling bids for the naming rights, said a new name for the famed arena could emerge as early as October 4th.

"We're looking forward to presentations by bidders next week, and then we'll get into the process of evaluation," he said. "I'm optimistic that we'll be able to overachieve the current financial deal that we [had] with Continental."

Continental had been paying over $600,000 a year for the naming rights to the arena. NJSEA officials expect to double that figure with the new naming-rights holder.

The new owner will hold the rights to the arena's name for two years, when the Nets move move to Brooklyn in 2009.

Representatives for Jay-Z were not available for comment as of press time.

@TreyPeezydotcom

Jay improved his worth by 83 mil just last year, thats not his complete worth you may need to add about 500 mil to that to see what hes worth.

btw iconix is the one going to pay for the naming rights as it owns the brand. jay's only a creative director at rocawear

Come on Illseed, do your research.

Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation which owns Izod and Iconix Brand Group which owns Rocawear are very close in earnings for the first two quarters of 2007, just under $70 million for Phillips & $92.1 million but bear in mind Phillips has almost twice the brands that Iconix has. Rocawear is already turning out to be very profitable under Iconix so this could be a very good look for Jay. This is exactly what grown up money looks like.

TreyPeezyDotCom – you clearly don’t know much about corporate business. Jay’s net worth has nothing to do with the company’s ability to secure naming rights, this is a business investment not a personal one.

This is great. I wish he would have kept the brand. In the long run Iconix will benefit from this more than Jay. They are just using Jay-Z to keep the clothing line relevant.
