A number of rappers and activists will support Mos Def's call for a National Student Walk-Out tomorrow (Oct 1) in support of the Jena 6.

In addition to Mos Def, rappers Common, Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, M1, Rep. Cynthia McKinney, Idris Elba, Pharoahe Monch, the Malcolm X Grassroots, the National Hip Hop Political Convention, The Hip Hop Association and student leaders from over 100 campuses will support the Jena 6 by walking out of class at 12:00 noon (Central time).

The rappers and activists are asking students to peacefully walk out of class and rally either on campus or at other designated areas, in protest of the case.

"This is the time for Black people to support the Jena 6, and call attention to the unequal treatment the criminal Justice system is dishing out not only in Jena Louisiana but across this nation," Mos Def said. "We all live in Jena. "

A list of demands created by the organizations will be read at each of the organized rallies around the country.

The group is calling for all charges against the Jena 6 to be dropped, to prevent Judge Mauffray from presiding over Bell's juvenile court hearings, that the Jena School District superintendent be removed from office and more.

The "Jena 6" are six black students who were charged with assaulting a white teenager at Jena High School in Jena, Louisiana after a series of racially motivated incidents.

The students were initially charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit attempted murder in connection with the December 4 beating of a white student.

The incident was the culmination of months of racial tension following a black Jena High School student’s request to the principal sit under an oak tree that was a frequent hang out for white students.

A day after the request, sat under the tree, three nooses were found hanging from the branches. Although the school’s principal recommended that those responsible for the nooses be expelled, the three white students were suspended for three days for the action, which was labeled as a "prank."

Soon after, Justin Barker, a white student, was jumped by a group of students who knocked him unconscious while stomping and kicking him.

Criminal charges were later directed towards the Jena 6, although the parents of the Jena 6 said they heard Barker was hurling racial epithets earlier.

On Thursday (September 27), Mychal Bell, the last of the "Jena 6" behind bars, was released from custody after a juvenile his bail was reduced to $45,000.

Over 15,000 demonstrators protested how the case was handled, claiming the black teens were being treated more harshly than the three white students who hung the nooses.

Aside from that though. Jena is just a microcosm of what's goign on in America. Black people need to get it together cause it's not just happening down south. Does anyone even know when the trial is for the police who shot Sean Bell? I guess Sharpton can only get one camera op at a time

Them major mainstream artists don't want to hurt their reputation/sales.... it's a sad situation considering the fact these artists don't know how much power they have and how much impact they can make...

I would respect Jay-Z, Diddy, 50 and whoever else alot more if they were involved in this. Just shows where everybody's priority lay.... MONEY. (and that's coo but then think about it... u get all that money and doing nothing to help, give back, support injustice etc... then you cakin for nothin..)

Like Aime' Cesaire said, "Greek is reason. Negro is emotion"

The only time kneegros get riled up about somethin is when there is a racial component to it. Never mind the fact that the Federal Reserve Banks and the IRS are private insititutions and wreak way more havoc on our lives but you don't see AL sharp-tongue and the crew protesting those entities. He will never have the testicles to do that! He'd rather go after 50cent and some white students in Jena-cide LA. You wanna mobilize the sheep, get them excited about ending the illegal occupation of Iraq or the atrocities in Darfur!

what happens if all the students who walk out of class get in trouble? will the white teachers and staff be wrong if they suspend  or discipline the students in any way? this is just gonna lead to some more bullshit. i agree that its totally fucked up that racism is still alive, and the whole situation with these kids bein tried on attempted murder, but this is not exactly the best idea. and what if adults want to protest? r they supposed to walk out of work?

So many strong points, I appreciate the fact the we are being intellectual about this.  Everybody is not going to agree with one another, and that's great.  But can we agree that the punishment should fit the crime?  We all know or have heard of people who have literally KILLED someone and walked, or were back on the street in less than 3 calendars.  Don't you think that 10 months in an adult institution is ENOUGH for a kid who went in when he was 16?  I don't think they should get away scott free, but just let the punishment fit the crime!!!

I have to agree with everyone.............

Walking out of school will accomplish nothing. Beating that white dudes ass did absolutely nothing for the situation. It brought attention to the violent nature of our people. These young dudes beat his ass, and now they have criminal records and one has missed alot of school over this. And their lives will never be the same. The situation is an ugly one, and none of us can be certain how we would react to this situation had it been one of us involved. But what we need to do as a people is make sure we are all well aware of what to do when confronted with racism. The school district, the parents, and the law makers are responsible for this situation.

Get involved b4 the ass whippings.... Stop the hate. Do something positive to bring support to this situation. Having students walk out of class only gets students out of class. And our "Leaders" need to be out there for everyday Americans instead of this political show boating they so often do. I have not in my 31 years been to, been invited to, nor met anyone who is apart of the NAACP. Our parents are failing to educate us about the downfalls of hate, therefore our children are learning the hard way. Malcolm and Martin died for nothing in my opinion. We are throwing all our freedoms away.

If you stand for nothing you fall for anything!

Just my opinion on the situaion.

You mention many institutional injustices, but you have to tackle one issue at a time. how many social issues did you tackle today? yesterday? last week? last month? this year?

Question: While I'm not in high school anymore, I must know....is Mos Def going to vouch for me if I were to walk out hypothetically??? Is there a hotline to call him up at? Because when you really get down to the dirty nitty gritty...this is pointless and can cause more harm then intended.

1) I wouldn't even know about this if not for AHH
2) Nobody important will KNOW about this, which will result in many students walking out peacefully and getting into trouble
3) The high school I attended didn't allow protesting on campus. You had to get a parental permission to remove yourself from the school property first. Do you think parents are REALLY going to support this? Better question; would your parents sign you out of school so you can walk the streets???
4) If there is a big test that day, are the students exempt?
5) Would we as a society really benefit from this or not?

I think the best method of action we can take is learning from this. I mean, when you look at this, we're not MAD at what the black students did...we're mad at how they're being treated legally. But, what are we really protesting???? Instead of protesting the situation, we should be protesting the institution!

The DA is the one who pressed the charges
The judge is the one who put the gag order on anything black in Jena
One of the boy's attorney was working with the DA!

....this is bigger than freeing them. This should be an event geared towards the institutions in life! We're being oppressed legally! What I'm saying is instead of just trying to free the Jena 6 (if they should be freed, which is an entire different argument) we should be focusing on how many black youth are getting pushed and shoved by the court system. Or the academic system. Or the credit system. Or etc...

If we were smart, this would be a liberation of ourselves, part deux. But since we're unorganized with no leaders...it's scattered walk-outs...wow.

If I was the white kid in the video I wouldnt have started the fight by messing with the black kid about getting his ass whipped by some white boys at a party the other night. And after the fight I would have been upset and wanted them suspended for awhile or maybe even expelled, but not unjustly arrested.

how about instead of walking out, encourage more people to major in criminal justice, political science, and pre-law so that we can change the system?

Or how about we boycott the stations that are doing little to draw attention to Jena 6 and other injustices in this country?  106 & Park spent more time talking about 50 vs. Kanye than Hurricane Katrina, Jena 6, or the Black man who was killed by cops on his wedding day.  Boycott BET for taking away BET News and Teen Summit.

"They" already think we are ignorant, and wasting our tuition dollars will only make them look down on us even more.

BET is not what it use to be they focus to much on the drama in so called hip hop and wanna be wrappers . The most the jena 6 get is maybe  2 min time slot .

If BET wants to impress me take off 106 & park for a whole entire week and interview each jena 6 member ,there famlies and lawyers .

Back in the days I wouldnt watch teen summit and I was so inspired by the topics .

Now the upliftment of our young means nothing .

Thats some b/s. But you can't really defend what the 6 people did. Either way you look at it, violence is still wrong. Point is they should have expelled the racist students and made an example that racism is a thing of the past at their institution. But instead they give a poor 3 day suspension and labelled the incident a "prank". Disgusting.

Either way you have to stand up for yourself, its just a shame that it had to lead to more injustice as violence only gets you into more trouble. Fuck Racism.

Great to see artists supporting the protest (esp. Mos Def for standing up to be a leader). But as I say I think more should be aimed at the institution than that of the 6 boys, they can't really get a pass for stomping someone out even though sometimes as in this case, its deserved. Unfortunately they got their justice the wrong way, but that probably felt the only way at the time.

Hopefully the media will grab a hold of the protest and take a likeness to the case, for the better. Man who got stomped should be convicted for being a racist and throw out of the institution for good if the people are right in what they heard.
