Police in De Kalb County, Georgia have arrested one individual and are investigating a series of racial attacks at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts, after vandals tied a noose around the neck of a bronze statue of slain rapper, Tupac Shakur.

According to police, the first incident occurred early Saturday morning (October 20), when vandals defaced the building and tied a noose around the neck of the statue of Shakur, which is located in the center's Peace Garden.

A second attack also occurred on the statue of Shakur, when vandals drew crosses and wrote rants about Hurricane Katrina and various record labels.

The attacks are being investigated as hate crimes by the De Kalb County Sheriff's Office and police are seeking additional suspects.

"We thank everyone for their prayers and support," Tupac's mother Afeni Shakur said. "Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators. Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings."

Due to the attacks, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) recently began fundraising efforts to construct a fence around the parameters of the Center to secure the property.

"With God's guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community," Shakur added.

On Saturday, November 10/4, TASF will host its 2nd Bi-Annual Film Screening with a rededication service of the Peace Garden.

The event is free to the public.

Donations to help erect the fence to protect the TASF can be sent to: TASF, 5616 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, GA 30083 or at http://www.tasf.org/ and http://www.2paclegacy.com/

Even though this was a symbolic act I don't really think our generation is prepared to tackle the tasks of dealing with institutional or blatant racism. We suffer deeply from the internalization of negative attitudes and feelings towards ourselves. Our generation has no faith, no principles, no real values, but we are brave and crazy and that is by design. Bravery without knowledge results in the type of misguided nonsense that is plaguing our communities now.

They are cowards to secretly place a noose around a statue's neck. Much like those white boys in Jena was cowards for hanging a noose from the tree. It is all designed to evoke irrational emotional responses from Black people. In the end we are not fighting against isolated incidents of racism even though knocking the shit out of a few wannabe Nazi's is always a great form of releasing tension. The real culprit is a global system of exploitation that is more insidious because the noose takes on different forms like bias laws, discriminatory lending practices, brainwashing through propaganda, etc.

Singer's promising career cut short
Homicide victim was rising in the world of R&B
By LINDA SPICE and JOHN DOBBERSTEIN
lspice@journalsentinel.com
Posted: Oct. 22, 2007
In the days before up-and-coming R&B singer Yolanda Brown and her boyfriend and producer JeTannue Clayborn were killed in the north side recording studio where they also lived, it had been the scene of a burglary in which most of their equipment had been stolen.

Milwaukee police released few details after the couple were found dead on Friday inside Loud Enuff Productionz, in the 5500 block of W. Lisbon Ave., and have not announced any arrests in the case. Brown's family doesn't know if the earlier crime is linked to the deaths, but notes that cords and accessories for the stolen equipment were missing after the shootings.

While questions remain about why the couple died, what Brown's family does know is that she was taken from them, and the music industry, too soon.

Brown, 21, was featured on a recording and in a video by platinum-selling singer Lyfe Jennings and was considered his protégé. She performed on local stages but also toured with Jennings as more fans came to know her professional name LaLa Brown.

"It was going to pay off. We knew it was going to pay off," said William Brown, who started traveling with his daughter to recording studios in Atlanta when she was 11. "It's a shame it had to come to this."

Brown's contract with Jennings expired this month, her father said, and she planned to record in New York in coming weeks with Divine Order Entertainment, headed by producer Baby Paul, or Paul Hendricks, and Charisse Edey.

"She had a unique vocal style," said Hendricks. "It was urban but had potential to become pop. I just know with some time and hard work and dedication, which I knew she had in her making some good records, she would probably have made a mark in the music industry."

Brown and Clayborn, 22, had lived together at the studio for about three months. When her father had not heard from her for two days, he filed a missing person's report last Wednesday. Clayborn's family also had become concerned. On Friday, a family member went to the studio and kicked in the door and discovered the victims.

According to a police report, the studio was burglarized in the early morning hours of Oct. 15. Some $9,500 worth of studio equipment, including keyboards, speakers, a microphone, computers and a mixing board, was taken. Clayborn had reported the theft that day, the same day the couple spent much of their time at Yolanda's parents' home with her 5-year-old daughter, Amirrah Airreal Brown. "Her daughter was the reason she wanted to rise to the top and get her daughter out of here, out of all this violence," said Yolanda's mother, Maria Brown.

The youngest of five children, Yolanda Brown was a vibrant personality born to be a star, according to her family.

"She said, 'I'm going to be famous.' I'd say 'La La, you were born a celebrity,' " said Alicia Brown, a sister.

Raymond Roberts, Brown's vocal teacher at Milwaukee High School of the Arts, said she had a naturally beautiful voice that flourished with formal training.

"It was something you wanted to listen to, it was so pretty," he said.

Roberts last spoke to Brown in May, when she visited the school and encouraged a group of upperclassmen to pursue their dreams.

Clayborn's mother, Dinah Chambers, said he found his talent in music at age 9 when he got his first keyboard. The family later moved to Los Angeles, where at 16, he was put in charge of music ministry at Second Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

The family returned to Milwaukee and Clayborn graduated from Custer High School in 2004, she said.

He started Loud Enuff Productionz in 2005, and produced gospel, R&B and rap artists, his mother said. He met Yolanda through the entertainment business.

Clayborn, who has a 2-year-old son, was known to family and friends as Kool-aid because "he was always so joyful. He had so much love. He was always smiling every time you saw him," Chambers said.

Visitation for Clayborn will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Pitts Mortuary, 2031 W. Capitol Drive. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mason Temple Church of God in Christ Child, 6090 N. 35th St.

Funeral arrangements for Brown are not yet complete.

I agree 100.... since the first noose incident white people know what that noose means to us, so they using that to constantly remind us racism is here to stay like Banquet frozen chicken. Every year it's something different and all we seem to do is politely protest or march. Even when that Jena 6 dude was released from jail the judge had him arrested again for violating his probation and got him locked down again. Thats what we call white retaliation. They network from coast to coast finding more and more ways to attract members and stir up controversy. We basically are powerless when you have a crooked and racist goverment as well as the judicial system. Like Sharpton said "Every city has a Jena 6, but not every city gets heard like Lousiana did".

I don't post on here often, but I like when I can get something positive or be put onto some knowledge on this site.  Anyone that posts on here frequently and expresses themselves genuinely, may gain a voice of influence (whether by choice or not).  So to those people including IllSeed (Boss Up, Water Ur Seeds, Gawga Bwoy, etc)...check this out and spread the word!

http://zeitgeistmovie.com/

IllSeed put us onto "Loose Change" a while back and this film digs deeper into other issues that effect us all.  It starts off slow, but continue to watch with an open mind...it touches on some contreversial and questionable issues related to religion, government, money, and war.  Oh, and if you've never saw "Loose Change" check that out also.

You can also Google: Zeitgeist (full movie)

I respect he don't like pac cause truth be told I don't condone alotta shit he did or said but he was able to grab attention of hiz audience white black whatever. had he had a chance to before he died  (open hiz & realize hiz total influence)  he could have did something major. u mentioned nobody riding krs & chuck d's nutz but that's my point exactly. I'm not included but do you see how many mufuckers that comment fired up. just think if he was soley motivated to use hiz afluence to fight for the struggle, how many people that message would reach. even if you don't like him or hiz music can you truthfully say that he didn't do shit for hip hop?

Even though this was a symbolic act I don't really think our generation is prepared to tackle the tasks of dealing with institutional or blatant racism. We suffer deeply from the internalization of negative attitudes and feelings towards ourselves. Our generation has no faith, no principles, no real values, but we are brave and crazy and that is by design. Bravery without knowledge results in the type of misguided nonsense that is plaguing our communities now.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

YOU SAID THAT SO WELL AND I AGREE WITH YOU. YOU CAN'T EVEN TELL THEM ANYTHING POSITIVE WITHOUT THEM RETURNING A BUNCH OF FOUL LANGUAGE AND B.S. I KNOW THE TRUTH HURTS AND ALL BUT DAMN, SO DOES REALIZING WE DON'T HAVE THE YOUTH ON BOARD WHEN WE DO HAVE TO GET DOWN FOR OURS.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
AGAIN, WELL SAID. MOST OF THESE RACIST TYPES DO THIS. THROW A BRICK AND HIDE THEIR HANDS.
MAN YOU ARE SO ON IT AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY I CONSTANTLY TRY TO GET "US ALL" TO BE AWARE OF THE REAL TROJAN HORSE. STOP SELF HATING AND KILLING OUR OWN. STOP "FALLING FOR THE BANANA IN THE TAILPIPE"
I'M SENDING YOU AN INVITE ON MYSPACE. EVERYTIME I SEE TRUTH, I HAVE TO RECOGNIZE IT AND GIVE PROPS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SPEAKING ON IT.
