Hip-Hop superstar Eminem has entered into an exclusive publishing and marketing deal with online music-publisher Kobalt Music Group and Los Angeles-based licensing and administration company Music Resources.

Under the terms of the deal, Kobalt and Music Resources will administer the rapper’s Eight Mile Style Music catalog across the world outside of the United States and Canada.

Eminem’s Detroit based Eight Mile Style and Joel Martin’s Martin Affiliated owns and controls over 225 compositions on various multi-million selling albums, including Eminem’s first solo albums.

Eight Mile Style’s catalog contains songs recorded by artists like Tupac, Dr. Dre, Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent and songs from Eminem’s upcoming album.

Martin, who is also principal of Eight Mile Style Music, made the announcement today (November 16) with Willard Ahdritz, CEO and Founder of Kobalt Music Group and Music Resource’s founder, Nancie Stern.

Kobalt will collect, process and administer royalties for the lucrative catalog on a worldwide basis, while Music Resources will administer the catalog for the United States and Canada.

Both companies will collaborate on A&R services to promote use of the catalog. Music Resources will use Kobalt’s new online music publishing administration technology to debut the “Powered By Kobalt” services brand as well.

“The music industry is changing fast, and like the trend with established major artists, copyright holders of major catalogs need to take control of their own destiny,“ Martin said in a statement. “Kobalt's transparent system has re-engineered the publishing industry, and we're confident we have crafted a unique relationship with Kobalt globally, and both Kobalt and Music Resources in the U.S., that will provide tremendous financial and creative advantages and will ensure we are completely involved in the management of our business with money not being wasted on unnecessary expenses."

According to Martin, the companies spent years conducting market tests and comparisons of collections of various publishers that have handled the rapper’s Eight Mile Style publishing catalog under separate agreements.

"Due to the fact that Eight Mile Style co-publishes multiple writers for the same songs that were administered by different companies in the same territories, it has enabled us to accurately compare 'apples to apples.' We found compelling advantages in Kobalt's level of accuracy, royalty tracking and transparency, especially as it relates to their unique portal and the proprietary technology they have developed," Martin said.

Kobalt has deals with artists like Gwen Stefani, Barry Manilow, German pop star Herbert Groenemeyer, The Hives and others.

To all u up & coming rappers, this is a perfect example of why u shouldn't sign shitty deals without educating yourself on your situation. Almost all of your favorite rappers don't own their publishing. Companies like dis coming up off an artists hard work. Smartin up...

Some of ya'll might take that the wrong way. Of course Em's gonna get paid, but not as much as the company that owns the publishing. Shit, they would'nt get shit if he owned 100% of his shit, unless he brokered them to distribute, or promote of some sort.

I definitley feel you on that caine crazy thing is the person that I have heard of that has the best record deal is romeo he owns I believe over 75 % which is unheard of. I think soon artist will be distributing and pushing themselves 100 % via the web and they will clear way more money.

I cant hate on him,  I can only hate on us for not protecting our own stuff. Hopefully they didnt get that stuff ganked from them by GOONS.

How can he own some Dr. Dre, Nas and JayZ stuff?

We need to wise up people. Him owning some Dr. Dre music is like Marvin Gay owning some of Barry Gordys usic.

    Im just saying..

You are right, the issue with publishing is having a wide enough net to properly promote it worldwide. A lot of artists don't want to make that kind of investment or they don't have the time. It is a proactive process. They actually shop your catalog and it also has a lot to do with relationships.

The big publishing companies are normally just subsidiaries of the big 3 entertainment companies. So they can easily get more money off a catalog since they own the radio stations and film studios that may re-use the material. They also have investments in a lot of advertising agencies that will use old songs and beats for commercials.

The trick is to lease minority rights to a good publishing company for a limited amount of time. So if you're getting 60% and they are getting 40% for let's say 5 years and then all rights are relinquished back to you it's a pretty good deal. A lot of publishing is 50/50 and that is a pretty good deal. Starting out you want to make sure you have 100% of your publishing and don't start negotiating that until you have a reason to. Most artists signed to record deals won't get 100% though they are lucky if they 25% with some of the deals they be signing. When you are getting less than the publishing company you're getting fucked.

because he recorded songs with people (dr. dre, jay z) and produced music for others (tupac on Loyal to the Game LP, 50 cent) he shares in the publishing of these songs.

I am unsure of the nas connection...

wow...so they found a way to make the middle man important again huh?

Kobalt is about to get PAID...yeah it's gonna be a good look for Em  too but nowhere on the same level...

i had a 60/40 split with my old publishing company but i only gave them rights to about 4 songs out of my catalog ( i wanted to see how they moved before i gave up any more material)
i'm glad i did that because i ended up getting a deal on my own without the help of the publishing company...it took a lot of sacrifices  (i gave up a 50k job for a night position so i could grind during the day) but the way i see it...you are only truly living if you are doing what you love...
