Retailer Dr. Jay's has pulled various clothing lines that a New York lawmaker said could be associated with gangs.

According to The New York Daily News, representatives for Councilman Leroy Comrie office entered the store and bought T-shirts with slogans like "Never Snitch Ever" and "Respect the Shooter."

Representatives for Comrie's office said the slogans, as well as the colors on the various T-shirts could end up getting those who wear them into trouble with gangs.

"Dr. Jay's retail stores do not have any of the products in question," said a company vice president. "We have contacted our buyers of the Dr. Jays.com Web site, and they are removing or already have removed all of the inappropriate merchandise from this company."

Dr. Jay’s opened its first store in 1975 in the South Bronx.

The company now has 19 stores throughout the New York metropolitan area.

Little kids don't need to be wearing this shit.  Of course everyone has a right to wear what they want, but if you can keep this garbage off of the little kids as long as possible, the better off they will be.  If you are getting messages like, "respect the shooter" at such a young age, you may be tricked into believing it to be true, instead of what it really is, which is  ignorance. How about "Respect a Teacher?" I know people will laugh at this idea, which is sad. Of course it all sounds fine and good when it is in the lyrics of your favorite thug rapper, but the reality is, young men, black men in particular don't need to be promoting any more negative shit than they are already. The fact that one out of four black men will be caught up in the system is terrible, and you better believe they aren't all there because of racist cops, or whatever else they always cry when they get caught fucking up.  I saw a bunch of little kids with Snowman shirts on when they first came out, and I just felt bad.  What type of path are these children expected to follow when the things they look up to are negative? I know people might say that these shirts aren't what cause crime, which is true, but it doesn't help either. Have more respect for tomorrow's generation than to have them wearing these bullshit negative messages.

I couldn't have said it better myself.  These cats who're pushing and co-signing that garbage have been selling out our community for long enough.  I view them as the Klan of the new millennium, who've turned in their white sheets and skin for "Stop Snitching" shirts and black skin.  I for one love the idea of "Respect a Teacher" shirts.  I've lived in Japan for the past 14 years and what these cats don't realize is that the ignorance that they're breeding has global implications, and thus making hard working African Americans look like savages and clowns in the eyes of the international community.

Any of you brothers who really want to make a difference, feel free to contact me.  I've been singlehandedly funding my own outreach program where I'm molding kids for success by teaching them Japanese, as well as bringing them over here to show that there's a world outside of their neighborhoods.  You young cats out there need to stop using that tired "I'm in the hood" mentality and do whatever you can to get out.  I grew up in Philly, have 6 older brothers who are doing life in prison, and I still earned an MBA.  I did it....why can't you?  It's about stepping up and playing chess, not checkers.  Much love to all of my brothers and sisters out there who're fighting to uplift our community.  Shout out to Smashit and Dough Hustle as well.

Cosign Poppa Clippin, it's time for all of us to take some responsibility for all of this. That sounds like some damn good work you are doing luvgroovesjapan, good luck with that.

For all you thug-loving, ghetto apologists that want to live by some lame meaningless keep-it-real code here's a suggestion, go get a damn passport and get on a plane. The world is so much bigger than your block or your hood, aim higher than being that guy that kept it real for 30 years and while the rest of the world is growing, that fool is still in the hood. T-shirts aren't the problem but ones with obviously negative images aren't a part of the solution either. If we don't stop this nonsense now, what kind of society will be here for our sons and daughters? Be more about getting money and focus on leaving a legacy our families can be proud of.

I'm glad Dr Jays decided to remove the shirts. I know I would have hated to see black kids walkin up and down Fulton St with those shirts on. To celebrate stupid shit like that is crazy

Respect the Teacher? Man I digs that idea....someone, or something has to change this negative shit..

Im so sick of hearing all this stop snitchin bull shit.  So many dudes walking around not even understanding the value in it.   Just walking around saying it, wearing it, and living it but not really getting it.

Its a difference between not snitching and being sensible.  I hope these kids will be able to differentiate when they see all their role models parading around with the words.  Looking like idiots.

If this new era is the future, the future is fukked!

Sometimes I wonder if I was supposed to grow up in this era...

I truly appreciate it brother.  I tried partnering with churches, the NAACP, and everyone else you can imagine who are on TV talking about helping our community, but not one of them replied so I took it upon myself to make things happen.  It's good seeing real brothers on here speaking up.  Shout out to SagNasty, HoodProphet, Ron Art, and AfricanMan.

100% in agreement...i've been working with "at risk" youth in my community for about 7years now...i even supervised my own runaway shelter for a few years (before the powers that be claimed that my shelter was not needed and shut me down)

the kids are so confused right now, which is way i dedicated my 9 to 5 life to them...being and independent artist and a Counselor is alot of work but the kids need to see more brothers doing it right instead of wrong...

just imagine if teachers and counselors were paid a professional athlete's salary...do you really think brothers would be pressed to shoot hoops or score touchdowns? we really got our priorities mixed up....

I'm sorry to hear about them shutting you, and they definitely can't keep a good brother down. "The kids need to see more brothers doing it right instead of wrong," "just imagine if teachers and counselors were paid a professional athlete's salary...do you really think brothers would be pressed to shoot hoops or score touchdowns? we really got our priorities mixed up." Amen to that!

Please feel free to drop me a line at luvgrooves@yahoo.co.jp, and let's see if we can brainstorm and do something together for these kids.

IT'S PLENTY SHIT KIDS DON'T NEED TO WEAR OR SEE, SO JUST DON'T KNOCK SHIT THAT COME FROM THE HIP HOP COMMUNITY. THE SAME WAY PEOPLE FEEL RAP MUSIC INFLUENCE PEOPLE, SO DO VIOLENT MOVIES OR TV SHOWS. AND JUST BECAUSE A PERSON LIVE BY THE CODE OF "NO SNITCHING" DON'T MEANS HE'S A THUG OR GANGSTA, IT COULD JUST BE HIS BELIEF, SO STOP STERO TYPING. I DO FEEL THAT IF U GONE LIVE THAT LIFE OF A GANGSTA OR THUG AND GET CAUGHT UP ON YOUR OWN BECAUSE OF YOUR MISTAKE, THEN NO U SHOULDN'T TELL, TAKE YO TIME LIKE A MAN. NOW IF U A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, HOME OWNER, TAX PAYER OR ANYONE NOT INVOLVED IN ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES, THEN I DON'T FEEL THAT THE "NO SNITCHING" REALLY PERTAINS TO THEM, BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT LIVING THAT LIFE.

Real talk pops kids in the ghetto are born to fail stastically showing. Pulling these shirts isn't going to help, because the way it is in the ghetto chances aren't very high for black kids or and other skin color to be successful in life. We need to try a lot harder than pulling some fuckin shirts.
