Obama "I love the art of Hip-Hop;" Loses NH Primary

By Houston Williams

Senator Barack Obama is interested in utilizing rappers to educate youth with Hip-Hop, should he make it to the White House.

"I’ve met with Jay-Z; I’ve met with Kanye. And I’ve talked to other artists about how potentially to bridge that gap. I think the potential for them to deliver a message of extraordinary power that gets people thinking [is strong]," the presidential hopeful told Jeff Johnson on BET special What’s In It For Us?

While the possibilities are endless, Obama said that he still remains disturbed at some of the harsh images represented in Hip-Hop music.

"There are times, even on the artists I’ve named, the artists that I love, that there is a message that’s, sometimes degrading to women, uses the N-word a lil’ too frequently," he said on the show, which was played on Monday. "But also something that I’m really concerned about is [they are] always talking about material things about how I can get something-more money, more cars."

Obama admitted to being an "old school guy" that likes 60’s and 70’s soul music.

"I gotta admit – lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Jay-Z. This new American Gangster album is [good]. Kanye, I like. I enjoy some of the newer stuff. Honestly, I love the art of Hip-Hop. I don’t always love the message of Hip-Hop."

After being asked if he liked Hip-Hop, the Illinois Senator replied, "Of course."

Last year, Russell Simmons criticized Obama for calling on some rappers to amend their vulgar lyrics.

"What we need to reform is the conditions that create these lyrics. Obama needs to reform the conditions of poverty. I wish he really did raise his money on the Internet, like he said. I wish he really did raise his money independently."

Simmons later rescinded some of his claims and apologized to the Senator.

Throughout his campaign, Obama has preached under the mantra of change and he said he would like rappers to envision change through their music.

"Hip-Hop is not just a mirror of what is it should be a mirror of what can be. A lot of people say, ‘I want to be real. I want to be down. Then we’re just trapped in 'What is.' Imagine something different. Imagine communities that aren’t torn up by violence.

"Imagine that we’re respecting our women," Obama continued. "Imagine communities where knowledge and reading and academic excellence are valued, communities where fathers are doing right by their kids. Art can’t just be a rearview mirror. It should have a headlight on there pointing to where we need to go."

The show was telecast as the results of the New Hampshire Democratic primary were coming in.

Obama placed second after Hillary Clinton after besting the New York Senator in Iowa.

Despite the loss, Obama remained optimistic in a speech to his supporters.

"You know, a few weeks ago no one imagined that we'd have accomplished what we did here tonight in New Hampshire. For most of this campaign, we were far behind. We always knew our climb would be steep," he said to the crowd. "I am still fired up and ready to go."

With 75 percent of the precincts reporting, Senator Clinton raked in 39 percent of the vote and Obama took about 36 percent.

NEWS FLASH: New Hampshire is in New England, which is predominantely EXTREME liberal country (this about it: John Kerry is from N.E!). And while BILL Clinton wasn't all that liberal, Hillary certainly IS.

real talk yo.  They trying to paint Hillary as the underdog now because they know that the underdog thing helped Obama tremendously.

But he is most def still the underdog.

Funny thing is, most people just want to be aligned with who they feel has the best chamce of winning and not who they thing will be best.

This election right here going to be a real interesting one.

Either way, no matter the turnout, I cant imagine any of the candidates being worst than what we currently have is this country.

Most of what Barack says is correct. I think he should be President, I hope he does become President.  Everyone who's eligible to vote should vote in this year's election.

@ G-Unot

I feel the same way. They are reporting that Hilary Clinton made a shocking comeback in NH. Like she hasn't been the favorite to win the Democratic Nomination from the beginning. Even though Barack came in second last night, that to me is a win in itself. People should be shocked that she only got 39% of the vote. She should have had at least 60% while the rest of candidates should have been fighting for 40%. The media wants to control this race by swaying public opinion. Did you notice all the coverage Hilary got for ALMOST crying?? Please, she is a woman, I expected her to cry at some point. I even expect one of the men to cry at some point. But they said it makes her more human...Please, a lot of people can cry whenever they want to. Her and Bill owe a lot of favors to people from their years in office, Hilary is gonna have to repay those debts in some kind of way. If she is elected, we won't see that much change, it will be the same old Dems VS. Republicans.

i feel u dog, but really who wants to see a president cry, man or woman it seemed like a stunt o me.. im not tryin to offend no women here because if obama started crying il fell the same way.. i want a president who will be strong and not break down.

obama is very smart and educated.. his wife was on the radio she sound like str8 from da hood but she is very knowledgable.  what he said about hip hop is right.  most rappers are rapping about what they seen and done instead of rapping about what should be done or what life should be like.  i dont mind it both but he do understand for us to change the lyrics communities would have to change.

he got my vote

A TRUE SIGN OF OBAMAS CHARACTER AS A LEADER AND A MAN IS THAT HE'S RUN HIS CAMPAIGN BASED ON HIS OWN MERIT. NOT TALKIN SHIT AND PUTTIN DOWN THE OTHER CANDIDATES. THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN HAS SAID EVERYTHING FROM HE'S NOT EXPERIENCED, HE'S JUST A TALKER, HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH REPUBLICANS, HE'S USED DRUGS AND JUST THE OTHER DAY I HEARD AN INTERVIEW WITH HILLARY AND SHE SAID THAT OBAMA NEEDS TO DO MORE "SPADE" WORK, WHICH IM SURE WAS A SUBLIMINAL SNEAKY RACIST COMMENT, THAT A LOT OF THESE BLACKFOLKS THAT WANT TO CROWN BILL AS THE FIRST BLACK PREZ ARE SO HOODWINKED THEY DIDNT PICK UP ON.

WE ALL NO THAT IF OBAMA WANTED TO ATTACK CLINTONS PERSONAL LIFE ALL HE WOULD HAVE TO DO WOULD BE POINT OUT THAT IF THE WOMAN CANT EVEN HANDLE HER OWN FAMILY AND KEEP HER HUSBANDS DICK OUTTA EVERY INTERN AND ASSISTANTS MOUTH HOW CAN SHE RUN THIS COUNTRY.

The real test for Obama was the win he already got mainly because of its history and demographics. NH was always a toss up, and Hillary barely won that. If I was the Clinton campaign I would be concerned. According to the naysayers Barack is not supposed to be playing at such a high level against the Clintons of all people but he is.

@ Jay Allah

She sounds like she could be the chick down the street. Speaking of Barack's wife. They both sound real and act that way too. I've read both of his books. My mother has actually been telling me about him since he became the First Black President of the Harvard Law Review, but I just dismissed him at first as some uppity-ass Negro who knew nothing about coming up Black. But once I did some research of my own I realized that he knows exactly what Blacks have gone through and what we face. The reason why he's been so successful among whites is because he's not running his campaign based on Civil Rights issues alone, like Sharpton and Jackson did when they ran.

Obama has lived in Harlem, Compton, Indonesia, Hawaii, and Kansas. He has first hand knowledge about racism and how it effects us. That's why he gets my vote, cause he knows that and he knows that not all white folks have it easy either. His mother, who was white suffered too from racism for having a mixed baby. She suffered from the lack of quality healthcare that is available to the middle class.

I just hope Black people will decide to finally stand up together with this man to show America that we are not buffoons, or just entertainers. That we have the power and smarts to change shit for the better, it's about time. Besides, Clinton was in office for 8 years, the Bush family has held the office for 12 years. We need a new face in that office. Like D.L. Hughley said, Obama can't do that that bad. What can he do that Bush Jr. hasn't done?? Start a war, cause a near recession, corporatize America, allow the drug companies to charge whatever they want, give BIG tax breaks for the wealthy, give BIGGER incentives to companies to outsource their jobs overseas, while unemployment here climbs??

Exactly.
As a sidenote, and I know yall probably hate Fox News, but I was flippin through last night, and they were talking about the Democratic candidates, so I stopped and watched. They were predicting that John Edwards will drop out of the race soon, b/c, as many people know, his plan was based on winning Iowa, which he lost, and then Nevada, which he now has no shot of winning. Therefore, there really isn't any reason for him to continue running. And if he does pull out soon, the key to the democratic nomination will be whether the Edwards supporters vote for Obama or Hillary.

i've been a fan of Obama ever since he opened the DNC before the last election.  i'm sure he's not a die-hard hip-hop fan, but i do believe that he listens to at least some.

while i do want you all to vote for him, i'm not gonna tell you to. but regardless of who you vote for, it is important to vote.  and until we get out of the whole  "my vote doesn't count" mentality, we won't have a voice to be heard.  i really don't follow politics, so besides the stuff that's in the news every single day, i don't know all that much about what every candidate says they're gonna do (and obviously every year people make promises that they have no intention of keeping).  so i'm voting for Obama because of all the candidates, i think he's the realest candidate and is gonna look out for the right people.  like you Profit i do have a small fear that if elected someone  might try to take him out.  let's hope not.

but like i said, it doesn't matter who you vote for, just make sure you do it.  i'm sure you're all just as pissed as i am about the way shit has gone down the last 7+ years while bush was in office.  while we can't make bush lose this election, we can make sure that the next president isn't gonna be as stupid as that motherfucker.

GET OUT AND VOTE!

HILLARY WON NH BY WHAT? LIKE 6% MORE VOTES THEN OBAMA? I'M NOT SURE BUT IT WASN'T A LAND SLIDE LIKE THEY MAKING IT. LOL
I AGREE WITH OBAMA ON THE ISSUES OF:

THE CONFLICT IN IRAQ [BRING THE TROOPS HOME IMMEDIATELY]
AND HEALTHCARE [HE IS FOR S CHIP]

THESE ARE THE 2 MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES OF THIS ELECTION TO ME. SO I AM REALLY LEANING TOWARDS OBAMA MORE AND MORE. I DON'T SEE A BLACK NOR WHITE MAN. I SEE THE RIGHT MAN.

MAYBE

OBAMA/CLINTON? LOL BUT SHE'S GOT TO STOP BROWN NOSING THE REPUBLICANS WITH THAT "WE'LL GET THE TROOPS HOME, STARTING MAYBE IN 2009" CRAP. I SAY THE DAY AFTER THE INAUGUARATION,

BY LAND, SEA AND AIR, GET OUR PEOPLE OUT OF THAT DAMN REGION. IT'S ANOTHER VIETNAM SCENARIO AND THAT'S FUCKED UP. NO REAL PURPOSE AND NO DAMN EXIT STRATEGY.

MORE;'
IT SHOWS HOW IGNORANT BUSH AND HIS ADMIN IS. HOW THE HELL TO YOU DECLARE WAR ON TERRORISM? LIKE IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEREEVER THE BOMBS ARE DROPPING. DUH!

"TERROR"

START WITH THE DAMN COPS AND KLAN. THEY BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES, TERRORIZING PEOPLE. HMMMMM

OIL AND THE CONTROL OF IT, THAT I WHAT THEY WENT FOR. BUSH IS IN THE REGION RIGHT NOW TRYING TO BUY MORE FRIENDS. THEY'LL DECLARE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST AFTER ARMAGEDDON. IT'S BEEN THAT WAY AND THE BIBLE SAYS,
"EVERY OLD IS NEW AND EVERYTHING NEW IS OIL. THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN." [ECCLESIASTES 1:9-18]

SO THERE WILL NEVER BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
BUSH IS SUCH A SATAN. HE HAS NO PLACE IN THE HOLY LAND AND NEITHER DOES THE "WESTERN" WAY OF LIFE. WE SHOULDN'T BE THERE.

WE NEED TRUE DEMOCRACY HERE FIRST, SHIT!

:SMH:

OBAMA/CLINTON

OR

OBAMA/EDWARDS

BUT OBAMA IS THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB AS FAR AS THE REAL ISSUES GO, IMO.

VOTE FOR SOMEONE, ALL OF US AND BE COUNTED.
