Jay-Z has been named chairman of Translation Advertising, a new advertising agency that is part of Steve Stoute's Translation Consultation and Brand Imaging.

According to The New York Times, Jay-Z will help direct the agency's efforts to connect advertisers to a newer, younger, demographic.

"As an artist, you make music," Jay-Z told The New York Times. “And if you see people who don’t know how to market your music, you get involved in it."

Stoute and Jay-Z jointly own 51% of the company, while Translation's parent company, the Interpublic Group of Companies owns the other 49%.

Interpublic is the third-largest advertising agency. Just last year, Stoute sold the company to Interpublic for almost $15 million dollars.

According data released by Nielsen Company last week, advertising spending on media outlets that reach multicultural consumers in America totaled $2.3 billion last year.

The greatest amount of spending was on African American targeted media at $805 million dollars, comprising 35% percent of total spending.

Jay-Z will take over as chairman immediately and the company is expected to announce their first clients later this month.

Let's hope he doesn't f--- things up there too. You know from Roc-a-fella to def jam, he only focuses his attention on one or two of his artists, then everyone has to wonder aside from signing people (Bringing Nas on was his biggest, most significant move!!), what the hell did he do there? What policy did he change to make these better for the artist? None. He signs Foxxy and doesn't put the album out, Kanye and Rhianna are the only who really benefitted from his administration. I didn't know when Mariah came out (not that I cared), but she was bought for how many millions (her and Janet Jackson)!
Two Ghost albums came out and I didn't even hear about it till I was in the damn store. Ne-Yo could be bigger but he is not, yet.
It just shows who the real leaders were on the Roc. Everybody Jay brought on roc-a-fella became nothings (DID U NOTICE THAT: Bleek, Amil, name summo) but every one that Dame put on made more of themselves (except for the ever beautiful Nicole Wray) I am talking about Cam, Kanye, Siegel. These were the ones Jay did not want to steal his shine, they did anyway huh. Jay really does not have the reach Kanye has, everyone says Beans has better rhymes and Cam, he got the most attention (even though he sucks as a rapper)!
So hopefully he will actually learn fom Dame and Biggs and lead. But he'll probably let somone else do it.

Jay-Z could be returning to the corporate ranks.

We were the first to tell you, in December, that the rapper-turned-executive was likely to leave his post as Def Jam CEO after he and Island/Def Jam chief L.A. Reid failed to reach a resolution on his contract renewal.

Now we hear Jay has been huddling with Reid's rival, Warner Music Group head Lyor Cohen, to talk about starting his own label - tentatively called the Carter Music Group.

"The reason Jay left Def Jam was less about money than about freedom," an insider tell us. "He didn't want to come to the office every day. And he had so many outside projects - his chain of 4-0/40 clubs and the hotel he's building in Chelsea. But he wouldn't mind having a small label for the talent he discovers. He might just put out three or four records a year. He'd let somebody else do the heavy lifting."

Cohen said that he and Jay have not discussed a label deal yet.

"I would be honored and privileged to work with him again," says Cohen, who signed Jay to Island/Def Jam when Cohen was there. "Bringing Jay-Z to the Warner Music Group would be a privilege and a coup. I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Cohen disputed the suggestion of Jay-Z running a "small" label. "Jay never does anything small or part-time," said Cohen.
Jay still owes Def Jam a new album - due later this year - and a greatest hits CD. One exec there doubted Reid would be bothered by his artist competing with him. "Starting a record label from scratch is very difficult," says the source. "If Warner Music wants to do it, better them than us."

Meanwhile, we hear 50 Cent may be helping Ashanti plot revenge on Murder Inc. capo Irv Gotti. The songstress has been furious that her label's boss wouldn't deny rumors that they'd had an affair.

"She was pissed," says our source, "And now 50 Cent is trying to get her to be a part of G-Unit."

Fitty hasn't always been flattering toward Ashanti. He told Playboy that "her music is not the hottest s- in the world."

But our source reports: "He called her to apologize."

P.S. Don't believe that rumor going around Wednesday that Fitty had been shot (again). His rep assures us he has no new bullet wounds.

If Im not mistaken they bridge the gap between these major corporations and hip hop! Basically when a company wants a more hip hop flavored commercial or wants to appeal to the hip hop crowd , Stoute and his company is the guy they go to for consultation or advice. I believe he and his company did the Justin Timberlake and McDonalds commercials.

Also Jay teaming with different corporations like GM and the Jay-Z Blue truck, HP Commercials and now him supposedly starting a "super label" with Apple is all through Stoute and his company I believe.

Overall niggas hate on Jay but its a business and Jay is on his shit! PERIOD! People tend to forget there are NO FRIENDS in business. Why does he give a fuck about another artists career??? He's an artist himself. He used his superstar status to become and EXEC which helped him as an ARTIST because he controlled his fate but other artists(his competition) fate as well. He took care of the artists he brung that were WORTH HIS TIME! Call it selfish, dirty, whatever but remember its business and there are no feelings or friends in business!!!

Did nothing at Def Jam? A lot you are just very ignorant to the facts. Mariah was brought over and the cd did like 4 million. Just when you thought def jam was just rap...most of you would. Fall out boy did 3 million and shouted jay out at the Grammys.

When did it stop being about LA Reid calling the shots? Lets blame Hov guess he is still making music, ppl grow up. Jadakiss told ya'll in his new freestyle that LA better not stiff him on promotion. Check for yourselves! Too many of you take things at face value and refuse to do research.

Jay has kicked down so many doors and given people more opportunities. Rappers owning sports teams, fashion, owning clubs, venturing into other genre of music. The last one fucked your heads up! OTher music Genre: Kanye, Lil Wayne, three 6 mafia, and the game have hopped on song rock tracks.

The influence is plain and simple. Its more than music. This guy had us and most of the industry wearing button ups and air force ones. For those old enough to consume alcohol, he had us drinking Heineken, the Yankee fitted, and most of the slang we use.

Hov is that dude. He keeps raising the stakes. He's everywhere. I think he'll probably be the 1st rap billionaire. Him or Puff....maybe Curtis, but Jigga is makin more precise POSITIVE moves. Hotels, sports bars, HP commercials, Pres and CEO of record companys, ownership in a sports franchise, this new shit, oh and he's a pretty good artist too, tours etc. Don't let this nigga start gettin that hollywood money and start producing films....LOL He'll end up being the George Lucas of this rap shit and niggas really gone be mad. The dude is an army by himself and I can't do nothing but congradulate and give props where props are due.

Too many times niggas big up negative shit, the niggas who bring down the culture or big up the niggas who glorify stupidity like it's ok to be dumb. Like it's ok to stay stuck in that same mindset. I bet Jay Z could tell you about a lot of stupid ass shit he's done, actually he has, but he never stopped trying to progress and push foward in a more positive way. Key word POSITIVE. That's a lesson we could all learn. To spend a lil less time smoking and drinking and a lil more time investing in our future that's coming weather we like it or not in a POSITIVE way. Everyday can't be a celebration. We all fuck up, but we all gotta get up too. Like Cube said one time, the warfare's mental. Jigga is kickin more doors down than anybody in our culture entertainment wise.

@bossup
the company creates marketing plans for other company's products and services.
they research statistical data that relates to a brands target audience and for a fee (millions in most cases) builds a campaign around a specific product or service.

Ay I don't knock anyone who is about their biz and does it right. I have said many times, Puffy and Jay I am proud of them as businessmen cuz they stacked up their money. Who can tell them much now? But as artists they fucked things up, but anyway-there fare ar too many Jay dick ridahs so I won't bother with that side of things. Besides, art is art, you like what you like and the opposite is true too.
Tell me what was Jay-z biggest move at Def Jam if it wasn't Nas? Who cares if an artist gives shouts to Jay-Z wouldn't you if he had some control over your shit or befriended you or mentored you? LA Reid is the big boss, we know, but as President are you trying to tell me you have no say in matters of business? Then why was he hired? You lose credibility when you say stupid shit like that. If he was meant to just be a face then so be it, then why act like he kicked down doors? When did he? What moves did he make that so fucking huge that he deserves credit for the way he ran Def Jam. I do recall an article on AHH where they said Jay-Z didn't much, a while back.

In fact, Ghostface liked him, a lot of big acts and new acts like him as a mentor and business person, of course there are those that did not. But ummmm, what the fuck did he do besides sign a lot of people who have yet to put out music? Is he just a glorified A&R? I thought dude a business to run?
Like one of yall said, it ain't about friendship it's about the biz. I agree man, but people up here acting like he didn't spend most of his time working on his albums, using the resources for himself.
Suge Knight once told rappers everywhere that if you wanna get a deal and not worry about the CEO trying to outshine you as competition come to Death Row. That shit is real. Who did Jay bring on that is still making music? He didn't want kanye to rap, DAME DID, Kanye said that not me. When Bleek music started getting better it was cuz Beans was writing for him. Who made the Roc look ten times harder than before he got there? BEANIE! For real, there are ways to do things. Hell yeah I criticize Jay. I had a deal on Def Jam years back, long before Jay was this big, and I know how Cohen is.
Jay is an artist, with businesses, (smile for him and his fam he got them out the projects) and if you are not going to run a company like you would your own companies then why bother?

LIVEWIRE10 I love what you said.
Tha1&Only: I am waiting for him to stop rapping about selling drugs, rich and almost 40? Even Eminem knew he had nothing left to rap about and stopped. How amny times could he vent? Jay first he never sold drugs but I understand why he said these things, it is what the fools bought into. Won't knock him for it. In his flick Fade to Black he tried to highlight that young rappers can't be themselves cuz they wanna sell records: so they gotta talk about killing and drugs, but why won't he admit that shit too? But hey whether or not a rapper killed someone or sold drugs, in this biz, you're damned if you and if you don't. Just don't no one find out either way.
