The Mayor of Newark, New Jersey will welcome a number of celebrities and Hip-Hop artists during the First Annual Newark Celebrity Golf Classic and Hip-Hop Business Summit, taking place this August.

The weekend kicks off with a "Welcome to Newark" dinner at the Weequahic Parks Golf Club, with remarks by Mayor Booker, followed by a white party at trendy spot The Spot on Commerce Street.

The weekend’s focus, however, will be The Hip-Hop Business Summit, entitled "Hood Economics," at Symphony, from 9:00 am- 2:00 PM.

A number of athletes, industry executives and local business leaders will meet to teach enterprising youth how to manage a business, how to diversify in business and the importance of receiving an education.

Confirmed guests include Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa, Lance Smith, Walter Briggs, Greg Anthony, actors Brian White and Michael Kenneth Smith, radio personality Ed Lover, publisher/author Karen Hunter and others.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity, including New Youth Golf Inc, a non-profit organization that introduces the sport of golf to underprivileged and economically disadvantaged minority children in the greater Newark, New Jersey area.

In related news, the owner of the New Jersey Nets shot down reports that Mayor Booker and New Jersey Devils owner Jeffery Vanderbeek were in talks with a group of investors to buy the team and move it to Newark, New Jersey.

The sale would prevent the team from heading to Brooklyn, where Nets co-owner and developer Bruce Ratner is attempting to erect the Barclays Center in Brooklyn later this year for the team.

The arena, however, will not be constructed in time for the team’s 2009-2010 season, forcing the team to play at its current home in the Meadowlands.

Mayor Booker’s aim is to have The Nets play at The Prudential Center, which opened in October.

The Prudential Center is home to The New Jersey Devils, who also played at The Meadowlands prior to this season.

Hip Hop Gets It's First Mayor!

Afrika Bambaataa and KRS-One have often been found of saying that Hip Hop needs to have Hip Hop doctors, lawyers and mayors... Well we do have doctors and we have lawyers. Now Hip Hop can point to its first Mayor. Well I should say, Deputy Mayor. Hip Hop artist/school teacher and one time candidate for Mayor, Ras Baraka-who is the son of poet Amiri Baraka was sworn in last Friday by the city of Newark, New Jersey to be one of four Deputy Mayors.. Here's a copy of the press release I received.

On Friday, September 27, 2002, Ras Baraka was officially sworn in as Deputy Mayor for the City of Newark (an appointed position). He is one of four deputy mayors and is in charge of Youth and Social Services. He retains his post as an Assistant Principal at Weequahic High School in Newark. Many of you supported Ras' campaign for City Council earlier this year. Although he lost by approximately 100 votes, it is clear that Ras, a native of this municipality, is an important leader in the city of Newark, a true voice for the hiphop generation and all the people of Newark, and a political force to be reckoned with in the coming years.

We congratulate Ras on his appointment. Who said Hip Hop wouldn't come this far. For more info on Ras check out http://www.onepeoplesproject.com/barakaprofile.htm

Ras Baraka

Poet, Educator, Deputy Mayor of New Jersey,

Convention Chair of the National Political Hip-Hop Convention

Ras Baraka has been called "one of the most consistent, courageous, and insightful activists of his generation." The son of revered poet-activists Amina and Imamu Amiri Baraka, Ras inherited their proud tradition of artistic excellence and community activism. A native of Newark, New Jersey and from a family who has lived in that city for over 70 years, he is now the Deputy Mayor.  His entire life's work is a commitment to the empowerment of people.

While a Student at Howard University, Ras (sounds like 'jazz') formed Black Nia F.O.R.C.E. (Freedom Organization for Racial and Cultural Enlightenment) - a student youth at the forefront of campus political and social activism. Through the organization, Ras helped organize and participated in food/clothing drives, neighborhood street clean-ups, and tutorials. The organization, which is now Newark-based and very active in that community, grew to include other chapters and has made alliances with various youth organizations worldwide. During his summer breaks, Ras served as Assistant Youth Coordinator for the Commission for Racial Justice. With Sister Souljah and Benjamin Chavis, he helped organize camps for children on welfare.

He also traveled with G.E.T. B.U.S.Y. - a tour of rappers and political activists who lectured at jails and schools around the country. In his junior year at Howard, Ras successfully led the 1989 historic student protest to remove Lee Atwater, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, from the University's Board of Trustees. The students challenged the school to support a number of key issues including improved student housing and a graduate program in African/African American studies. The following year, Ras was elected as Vice President of the Howard University Student Government. In 1991, he graduated with a degree in political science and history.

As an artist, Ras independently released his debut spoken word CD entitled Shorty for Mayor in 1998. He is re-launching the project in 1999 with plans for national and internet distribution. The underground classic features powerful pensive poetry set to set to music and one of its highlights is the never released single Hot Beverage in Winter. The single features Grammy award winning phenomena Lauryn Hill. The CD has received hot reviews from The Source, XXL, and other publications worldwide. The multi-talented Ras also edited In the Tradition (with Kevin Powell) - an anthology of young Black poets (1991). He is currently working on his second book of essays and poems. He recently appeared on Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry on HBO Television.

Currently, Ras is a vice principal at Weequahic High School in Newark. He formerly taught elementary school for ten years and coached girl's basketball. Baraka's love for teaching and education is matched only by his passion for political equality. Baraka ran for Newark's Mayoral position in 1994, garnering nine percent of the vote - a significant task for the then 24 year old. In 1998, he ran for Newark Councilman-at-Large and won the general election, but missed in the run off election. In 2002, once again he ran for Councilman-at-Large impressingly marshalling over 13,000 votes but again missing in the run-off. His political leverage did not go unnoticed. On September 27, 2002, Ras was sworn in to serve as Deputy Mayor for Newark Mayor, The Honorable Sharpe James.

Having traveled the world lecturing at conferences, appearing in countless documentaries, performing and organizing poetry shows, organizing in Newark's communities, one wonders how this generation's closet example of Paul Robeson finds time to accomplish what he has. For Baraka, politics is art is education and his life work represents a principle and passion that is rare among us.

METRO NEWS BRIEFS: NEW JERSEY; Business Group Leader Arraigned in Drug Case

Published: March 7, 1998
The leader of the Zoo Crew was arraigned on Federal drug charges yesterday after his arrest the day before. He was indicted on Aug. 29 with other members of the Newark-based group, who billed themselves as community-minded entrepreneurs but who prosecutors say were drug dealers.

Terrence Dent, 29, of Edison, was arrested in New York City on Thursday and was being held by Federal authorities pending a detention hearing in Federal District Court on Monday, said Carolyn Murray, an assistant United States attorney. Mr. Dent had been named in an indictment accusing him of selling drugs out of several Newark businesses, including Zoo Sportswear and Zoo Flowers.

He and Zoo Crew members led demonstrations to protest what they said was police brutality in Newark, after police shot and killed a pregnant woman during a drug arrest in front of a Zoo Crew establishment. Police were later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Zoo Crew supporters have contended that the indictments were in response to the group's activism. Mr. Dent's lawyer, Richard Banas, said his client failed to turn himself in because he feared for his safety.
