Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ) has announced that Shakir Stewart will effectively fill the vacancy left by rapper/mogul Jay-Z, who announced his resignation as President of Def Jam in December of 2007.

Stewart, who was senior VP of A&R, was named Executive Vice President of Def Jam Recordings Antonio “L.A.” Reid announced today (June 3.)

Stewart will report directly to Reid and Steve Bartels, Chief Operating Officer of IDJ and will be responsible for all day-to-day matters regarding Def Jam.

His responsibilities include signing new talent, overseeing producers and guiding the creative vision of the legendary label.

"The bold young management style that Shakir has established at Def Jam is one of the major reasons behind the label's success today," IDJ CEO L.A. Reid told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "From his solid roots in music publishing, he has grown to master the world of hip-hop and urban music."

Stewart has worked closely with Reid and Steve Bartels in the past and helped guide the label to win 26 Grammy nominations during 2007’s award ceremonies.

"The past four years have been an unforgettable experience for me," Stewart said. "Having the opportunity to work with a brilliant music man such as L.A. Reid, along with the most amazing team in the music business, has afforded me the knowledge and inspiration to take the next step in my career and continue to amplify and expand Def Jam's stellar reputation in the industry."

Stewart, an Oakland, California native, got his start in the music business promoting shows for a variety of artists, including Nas, Luke, Too $hort and others.

Shortly after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, Stewart formed Noontime Music and landed a joint venture deal with Epic Records.

He later signed on as Creative Director for Hitco Music Publishing, a company owned by Reid.

Stewart has signed or worked with a number of influential artists, including Young Jeezy, Rick Ross Destiny’s Child, Ciara, Outkast, Usher and others.

Yo Gotti says, "I had to go back to the basics!!!"

Figured Def Jam would do the same.  Chuck D was really reaching when he announced that he was going for that presidency...I knew that they weren't going to give it to another artist.  Very few can successfully balance art and business, but to Jay's credit, I think he did.  I think if he would have done even better had he been cultured to do so.

But anyway...I look at the overall picture of it.  These are all BLACK MEN negotiating for positions and earning REAL money.  Gotta love that.

    Tony

Def Jam is Ass right now.

Can't deny, but it's the truth.

    niggaz are starving for some
real music. Bring Russel and Rick
    back. Or Lyor.
Those guys know what music is.

I ain't checking for ugly ass Rihanna
and I don't give a shit bout NEYO.

Jeezy is not that good as a rapper
    and starts boring me...

The whole current Def Jam catalog

I cannot relate to. There is nothing
a street Nigga wanna buy. It's all
    soft and candy shit.

I don't wanna see old rappers, which
LA Read wasted their time, cause
    they could have move something.

Plus we now know that Jay is not
that good as a businessman, especially
since he only used his post to grave
    all other talents.

Def Jam was started as a revolution.

PE was there Run DMC was there,
    Redman, Mef, LL, DMX, etc.

There were times when i would cop
any single bearing the def jam Logo.

Any Album bearing Def Jam Logo.

Def Jam was known for taking risks.

The sound of PE was so much different
from anything, but they still put it out.

    And it worked.

Now Def Jam is only copying successful
R&B Formulas. The label is gay like LA Reid.

    Big broom inside his Azz.

Time to get back to business Mr. Shakir! I know you will do what you have to do to put Def Jam on top but also make sure that you focus on the culture of hip-hop and sign quality (hip-hop) artists like Def Jam use to represent back in the day.

Def Jam had Def Soul for R&B and thats how they kept their branding fresh and new. They need to go back to defining their hip-hop and R&B.  Although "it's all "black music and it's all good" (Common-"I Used To Love Her") you need to have executives that are focusing on one genre or the other because how you break a hip-hop act will not necessarily be the same way you break an R&B or Pop album but I am sure you know this already. Only time will tell-congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
