New York City residents will use their streets for a different purpose this weekend, thanks to rap mogul Jay-Z.

The superstar rapper has joined forces with the city’s mayor Michael Bloomberg to launch the Summer Streets program, an effort designed to transform local streets into recreation filled, car-free zones.

Summer Streets will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (August 9) on nearly seven miles of Manhattan streets, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park along Lafayette Street, 4th Avenue, Park Avenue and 72nd Street.

Residents and visitors can take leisurely walks or bike rides along the streets or take part and enjoy various activities such as dance performances, fitness classes, seminars about bicycle commuting, children's bike instruction, aikido, salsa dancing, tai-chi, running, rollerblading and hopscotch.

Three rest stops featuring art, fitness, dance and cultural activities as well as water stations, bike maps and first aid stations will be located at Spring, 24th and 51st streets.

A main stage on 24th Street will offer music performances and other programs.

Modeled after cities that use street closures to create temporary plazas on the weekends, Summer Streets is slated to continue on August 16 and the 23rd.

Group rides to the event from the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens will be offered by Transportation Alternatives.

According to Bloomberg, Summer Streets is a "a grand experiment that could dramatically alter the way we use and look at the streets of New York."

"Streets that are normally tied up with cars and trucks will be turned over to the public - so that we can experience this city as never before," he said as he embraced the chance to try something new that could potentially benefit New Yorkers.

For Jay-Z, the program comes as an chance for teens to get involved in positive activities.

The rapper hopes Summer Streets, which offers volunteer opportunities, will become a success and develop into regular program in New York.

It's a real double standard on this site. Why is that when Jeezy and Officer Roberts were giving back to the kids they were villified, but when Jay gives back he's a saint. It's not like Jay hasn't rapped about moving blow and negative street stuff in his day. Don't get it twisted I love Jay(he's my 2nd fav. rapper) and I think this is great thing he's doing, but I just want to know why he gets sucked off and Jeezy and Officer Roberts got hated on for essentially doing the same thing.

I wasn't trying to start anything with my question I was just speaking my opinion on what I see on this site. I don't know if it's a east coast bias y'all got or if you just like Jay's music better, but in the words of Young Buck I'm confused. Jay has spoken on moving coke on many occassions, but there wasn't a single comment on how he was destroying the community with his music. In the comment section for Jeezy and Officer Roberts community programs y'all made it seem like they were singlehandedly responsible for the plight of the black male in America with their coke tales. I'm just saying something don't add up. And this ain't nothing against Jay, along with Bun B he's the only rapper I actually admire, but like I said it seems like y'all got a double standard.

Maybe I miss understood, I was agreeing with The Trill. Jay is my favorite rapper and I listen to Jeezy on the regular but how is it that when Jay does something good he gets praise and when Jeezy does something good they say "well switch up ya lyrics"? What's the difference? It just sounds kinda bias like you are letting how you feel about there art effect how you feel about what they do.

I was actually interested in the responses because I AGREED with Trill, not wanting to see him get ridiculed. Is it east coast bias or better quality music coke raps?

Im thinking the only reason is that Jay has never really had anyone question the legitimacy of his raps BUT he is still, like some say "corrupting the youth" with coke raps. Then he dropped Kingdome Come, some shit WAY over the hoods head with the billionare talk, and niggas said he fell off when it was a good album. Basically you can never win with HIP HOP.

Rewind back a couple months ago, niggas was on Ross dick screamin he had the hottest album of the year when "Boss" dropped then somebody bring up his past and everybody hop off cuz he denied it. Whether he lied or not, doesnt matter. His music was so called "corrupting the youth" before he lied so why wait til he gets caught lying to hop off dick. You should've never been on it in the 1st place....

@THE TRILL.... ALL RIGHT LOOK HOMEY.... THE DIFFERECE IS THIS...IF YOU PAID ATTENTION TO JAYS MUSICAL CAREER...HE NEVER REALLY GLORIFIED VIOLENCE OR DRUGS.... HE TOLD YOU WHY HE HAD TO DO WHAT HE DID...... BUT NEVER MADE VIOLENCE AND DRUGS HIS MAIN TOPIC....JAY MAKES PERFECT SENCE IN HIS RHYMES JUST ABOUT ALL THE TIME...HE PAINTS A PICTURE WITH INTELLECT. YOU CAN TELL BY HIS WITTY FLOW THAT HE HAS OBVIOULSLY HAS BUSINESS SENSE AND HE TOUCHED SOMETHING IN THE DRUG GAME.... HE WOULD EXPLAIN TO YOU WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO YOU IF YOU KNOCK HIS HUSTLE, HOW NIGGAS HATE YOU WHEN U MADE IT.....SHIT OF THAT NATURE... BUT NEVER RECYCLED SHIT LIKE THESE RAPPERS

JAY ACTUALLY TELLS A STORY...RATHER IF HE WAS SPEAKING ON HIMSELF, WHAT HIS BOIS DID, OR WHAT HE HAS SEEN....ITS A MESSAGE OR A STORY LINE IN HIS LYRICS

THEM OTHER COKE RAPS NIGGAS JUST RAP...AND RECYCLE THERE SHIT OVER AND OVER AGAIN ON EVERY ALBUM...IN ALL OF JAYS ALBUMS LIKE I SAID IN MY PREVIOUS COMMENT HE SHOWS GROWTH.

Savy_Da_Boss said:

@ Maine Man

Ross said all of that shit too..Dig this, I like both Ross & Jay music but its they pretty much comin down the same lane. Them niggas done said the same shit, just worded different over different beats.

So because Jay says WHY he did it makes it better?? Its still coke raps my nigga....still"corrupting the youth"....we all out here tryna eat...niggas aint hustlin for fun, we hustling for funds...that goes without saying.

Sounds like it is bias because of the art as opposed to the person which means yall hating on Ross because of his music not because he lied. As big of a fan of Jay-Z I am, Im 95% sure he stretched the truth a lil to sell a couple more records and I cant knock the hustle.

Basically, niggas need to realize once again this shit is entertainment and accept it as that and stop letting rappers be your heros!

Jay is 10 years removed from the hood my dude. Over time you've been able to witness his growth. you gotta give niggas a chance to grow. When you been in the hood all ya life, it takes awhile to let go of that mentality and start to grow and you never fully let it go no matter how much cake you got or how far you physicall travel away. THEN when you change and grow, HIP HOP accuses that you forgot where you came from and come shoot up your giving back to the community event. LOL

I like the movesJ is making but who ever said "Jay never glorified violence" is crazy. They are not many artists in hip hip who have consistentley talked as much coke talk as Jay Z.....

His moves ARE positive his music IS NOT. To be honest it kinda surprises me how he has managed to balance gun bussing street hustler coke raps with being a 'role model'. Im happy to see his success but nonetheless his music is not positive, its advertisement for coke and street life, no less than Jeezy, 50, mobb deep, TI or anybody else you care to mention. I like their music too and when they give back to the community they should get the same respect.

@SAVY DA BOSS... I AGREE WITH YOU FOR THE MOST PART MY NIG...YOU HAD SOME GOOD POINTS... BUT IF YOU CHECK MY TRACK RECORD ON AHH...IVE ALWAYS SAID NIGGAS MUSIC HAS TO HAVE BALANCE...YOU CANT RAP ABOUT COKE FOR 18 SONGS ON A CD STRAIGHT WITHOUT RECYCLING YOUR RHYMES..... YOU HAVE TO SHOW BOTH SIDES OF THE COIN HOMEY....THATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM TWO..

BUT YOU SAID EXACTLY WHAT I WAS SAYING....YEA TRUE THEY BOTH SPOKE ON DRUGS... IT IS THE SAME LANE...THE ONLY THING IS THEY WORDED IT DIFFERENT ON DIFFERENT BEATS...MY POINT EXACTLY....WHEN JAY RHYMED ABOUT IT HE DID NOT GLORIFY DRUGS.... IF HE DID... SHOOT ME A COUPLE OF SONGS HE DID THAT GLORIFIED THE DRUG OR BETTER YET THE VERSE.... NOW DO THE SAME FOR ROSS..LOL

JUST BECAUSE JAY SAID WHY HE DID IT MAKES IT BETTER?
NA HOMEY...I DID NOT SAY THAT NEITHER...THATS JUST MY POINT AGAIN. JAY TELLS HIS STORIES...WHEN HE RHYMES YOU ARE ACTUALLY WALKING WITH HIM. HE SPEAKS IN 1ST 2ND AND 3RD PERSON TO GIVE YOU AN ALL AROUND VIEW OF WHAT HE IS RAPPING ABOUT.... WHEN ROSS DOES IT...HIS PRIMARY FOCUS IS HIMSELF AND WHAT HE DID...BASICALLY RECYCLING HIS RAPS.

AND I AGREE IT IS ALOT OF BIAS IN THE GAME, BUT FOR ME  ON THIS CONVO WERE HAVING...I THINK NOT... I NEVER HATED ON ROSS ALL I WANTED WAS NIGGAS TO BE PROUD OF WHO THEY ARE....

I WILL SAY IT AGAIN TO YOU NIGGAS....MOST OF US ON THIS SITE KNOWS THAT THIS IS JUST ENTERTAINMENT...WE HAVE THE SMARTS TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE...I KNOW THAT!!!!!!! OK. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE YOUNG ONES MY DUDE THAT DOESNT HAVE THAT SENSE THAT YOU AND I HAVE.... WE HAD THIS CHAT THE LAST TIME MY NIGGA...YOU SHOULD KNOW WHERE I STAND WITH THIS SHIT....RESPECT

Now it's hard not to kill n*ggaz

the streets is watching you, when you froze your arms
N*ggaz wanna test you and your gun goes warm
Can't get caught with your feet up, gotta keep your heat up
Sweet n*ggaz running 'round swearing sh*t is sweeter
Once you're tagged lame the game is follow the leader
Everybody want a piece of your scrilla, so you gotta keep it realer
Kidnap n*ggaz wanna steal ya
Broke n*ggaz want no cash, they just wanna kill ya
for the name, n*ggaz don't know the rules
Disrespectin the game, want you to blow your cool
Force your hand, of course that man's plottin
Smarten up, the streets is watching, it's on

and of course Coke Raps from "Roc Boys"

First of all I wan' thank my connect
The most important person with all due respect
Thanks for to duffle bag, the brown paper bag
The Nike shoe box for holding all this cash
Boys in blue who put greed before the badge
The first pusher whoever made the stash
The Roc Boys in the building tonight
Oh what a feeling I'm feeling life
Thanks to the lames, niggas bad aim
Thanks to a little change I tore you out the game
Bullet wounds will stop your bafoonery
Thanks to the pastor rapping at your eulogy
To Lil Kim and them, you know the women friend

NOW THE ROC BOYS WAS A CONCEPT SONG.... .....I don't get that.  When we say we don't like something, we "hating", when we say we like something and show love, we got "nuts in our mouth".

C'mon doobie, which way can we turn without tearing each other down.  Let's be good to each other.

Can't black people give their opinion and not get castrated for it?  I see this too often.  Ain't no way we gonna grow as people if we keep doing that to each other.

Look at "The rise and rise of Jay Z" on youtube.  They're like 8 parts to it.  You can't but admire his persistence and accomplished success.

But folks, don't get locked on looking at another man's success, GET YOURS!!!

Ya know!
