UPDATE: Police Release Details On Suicide Of Def Jam EVP

Sunday, November 02, 2008 6:45 PM | 85 comments
By Tai Saint Louis

Atlanta-area authorities have confirmed the cause of death of Def Jam Executive Vice President Shakir as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, AllHipHop.com has learned this afternoon.

The 34-year-old Oakland, California native, who split his time between Atlanta and New York, was discovered around 4:00 pm Saturday afternoon (November 1) in the bathroom at his home in Marietta, a northwest suburb of Atlanta.

According to Cobb County Police spokesperson Cassie Reece, Stewart shot himself with a handgun.

Upon being discovered, he was transported to Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In his four year tenure at Def Jam, Stewart rose through the ranks from Vice President to Senior Vice President of A&R, before taking over the position famously left vacant by Jay-Z earlier this year.

Those familiar with Stewart, who began his career in the entertainment business while still a student at Morehouse College, have echoed their disbelief at the shocking turn of events.

Stewart and his college inner circle are seen as largely instrumental in Atlanta's development into a major force in the world of urban entertainment.

It was with Hicks, RyanKenny co-founder Ryan Glover and Henry "Noonie" Lee that he got his start, launching Ivory Coast Entertainment, a party and concert promotions company.

They went on to start Noontime Entertainment, the songwriting and production company which brought forth Hip-Hop producer Jazze Pha, and Grammy Award winning songwriters Bryan-Michael Cox and Johnta Austin.

Police would not release details as to who discovered Stewart. Stewart went on to work for publishing company Hitco, where he signed Beyonce Knowles to a publishing deal.

During his tenure at Def Jam, Stewart was instrumental in signing Young Jeezy, Rick Ross and others.

Check the insurance clauses.  If they arent making money in these rough times off record sales, movie sales etc

Insurance for these guys probably runs in the 5-10 millions.  They dont have to sell records with that. Not to mention they make money off of their stuff they already own.

People always like to see the mighty fall. Dont judge a man's character by some paragraph long press release.

It is a fact that on average 1 in 2 people have a psychotic break in their lifetime. Sometimes it is more extreme sometimes more mild.  Typically it is marked by periods of insomnia or periods of over-sleeping. This is psych 102

Just like any other organ, the brain is part of the body that can become sick.  We all have a friend or relative who has been though mental illness whether it is diagnosed or not.

I have seen it up close myself and only the grace of god kept my homeboy alive through his episode. Wher he could have been killed by police, rivals, or himself.

Real life stresses can increase the likelihood of any psychotic episode.  Running a major record company (of like 3 left)  at 34 is unheard of.

This is undoubtedly the worst time in the history of the modern record business. Shakir undoubtedly had people that didn't want to see him succeed.  Alot of pressure for a guy who was a perfectionist and workaholic.

It doesn't have to be "the monster" or that he was a coward, or that he was selfish, or a conspiracy theory. He very easily could have been hearing voices, having hallucinations, and experiencing mania where logic is out the window.

Shakir's character was that of a warrior. He was a  guy you would want in the trenches fighting next to you. He was a strong-minded, funny, and charismatic dude. He also had a rare thing in an industry know for its shadiness..... class.

Unfortunately it sounds like he had a break with reality which culminated in his home with a handgun nearby. He wouldn't have done this in his right mind.

He will be missed and he will be remembered for the man that he was. May God rest his soul and comfort his family.

It's quite a shame how that word conspiracy has become like a dirty four-letter word in the american vernacular. Get over it kids, conspiracies are real. There are hidden powers that pull strings from afar. Been like that for years. The music industry is full of mobsters. So why is it such a stretch for one to believe Mr. Stewart's death might've been the result of foul play? If you think I am bugging, read what his close friend, Christopher Hicks had to say about the uncharacteristic inclination of his action. Google his reaction. Hey, i could be wrong but don't blame us for speculating. We're armchair sleuths that just may do more to shed light on the shadiness of the game than anything else. Just keep an open mind. But, RIP to the brother. I just smell a rat. That's all. It's my freedom of speech allowed by the AHH Editors. Take it or leave it alone. Try reading Nelson George's "The death of Rhythm and Blues". A good place to start for those that don't believe in a music mob.

Ok AHH let's be real. If you are Black, male and from the hood, society gives you many reasons each day to off yourself. Hell, let's be honest by saying that everyone on this forum has thought of killing themselves at least twice in their lifetime. If Black women can get knocked up and then abandoned by so called Black men and somehow find the strength to raise our unfortunate, ungrateful asses for 18+ years and in some cases 30/40+ years then how in the fuck can a Black "man" find any goddamn excuse to kill himself????? It's not the man himself but the ACTION that I'm concerned with....I wish his family well but I will not sit online and come up with excuses for why a man should kill himself. I feel that if you're willing to waste your time and come up with an excuse or explanation as to why anyone would kill themselves, and why anyone should show sympathy for such a cowardly act then you have problems, because there are plenty of people on this site and in our communities who have every reason to kill themselves but don't. Shit, twelth grade my classmates were getting ready for prom and I was homeless....and that's just touching the surface of shit I've been through in life. Now, there's a possibility that he didn't...but the very idea of suicide to a real man is repulsive....unacceptable....its a bitch move if you ask me. So bein' the man that I am seeing the things that I've seen....I just can't accept this ACT. With that said, I'm done commenting on this particular issue. It's sad, cause cats can be going through shit and you don't even know it.  The sad thing about suicide is that the person does say anything.  If they would just say something, somebody...be it a family member, friend, or companion, can talk them out of it.

Sad, sad, sad...

I just pray that God strengthens his family during this time of sorrow.

Mother.Knows this...
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Mother.Knows that..
HoodProphet's statement is so correct!

Mother.Knows our community suffers more from depression
and it is on the rise and finally being properly diagnosed.  For years it has been hidden or not even diagnosed, but it has always been there. And there are many factors that can contribute to the depression. As we know for sure it was not money or fame for this young man.

If you have family and friends that YOU know is suffering from depression, genltly suggest to them they get help.  NO they are not crazy, just so depressed where irrational thinking can cloud their mind.
They may kill you or themselves.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Keeping it real...there are many angry azz black MEN who have problems expressing themselves openly,
not showing their real emotions,
which can lead to destruction.
It does not make you less than a man to cry or tell another person what's on your heart.
And if you need to take meds... drop the pride and take them! Ain't no shame in trying to get healed!

Only this young man knew why he took his life or why someone else took it from him.  I can't say he is resting in peace.  But Mother can say may the family find peace in this time of sorrow and confusion.
