Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z Sued Over Single "Enough Cryin'

Hip-Hop Soul queen Mary J. Blige and rapper Jay-Z are at the center of a new federal lawsuit involving allegations of song theft.

According to the suit Jermaine Jumpp and Michael C. Adams, claim they gave a “compact disk” to the “office” of hitmaking producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, that contained a song called “On My Grind.”

The New Jersey pair further state that Blige’s single “Enough Cryin',” which was recorded four years later and produced by Jerkins, sounded very similar to “On My Grind.”

The new lawsuit comes months after Blige was hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit over her hit song “Work That.”

That song's owner, Drama Family Entertainment, filed its lawsuit against Blige in August, claiming the songstress used "Work That" without its permission.

Music for the single was allegedly written by producer Theron “Neff-U” Feemster.

Despite Blige being prominently named in Jumpp and Adams’ lawsuit, TMZ.com reports that Jay-Z’s role in the situation is unclear in the suit.

I just would like somebody to tell me what Jay-Z has to do with any of this?

I was glad to see "Despite Blige being prominently named in Jumpp and Adams’ lawsuit, TMZ.com reports that Jay-Z’s role in the situation is unclear in the suit."

Because it is very unclear.. as far as I can see his name seems to be there solely to draw attention to the situation..

Nothing jay z puts out is original, whether its his lyrics, a beat or a hook he bites everybody and rolls it up into a song. You can't say these cats are lying until you've heard their track that they turned in first. And yeah major artist have given up some serious dough for bitting in the past so fuck what you heard.

This sounds like they should just be suing darkchild for stealing the material producers and A&R are known for biting demos if he loses the lawsuit then he probably just used a sample and darkchild heard the track and just used the same sample. Darkchild may use that as his defense and win the case even though he was morally wrong.

...A Mainstream artist & third-rate producer being sued for stealing a beat?

Bleh--I'm not surprised.  The same thing happened to Kanye and Luda a few years back, when they were sued over the "Stand Up" beat.

...But the only way I can see Jay having anything to do with this suit is that Foxy Brown was originally supposed to rap the verse Mary spit on the song, but Jay didn't think she (Foxy) spit the verse good enough.

In other words, Jay prolly wrote the rap on the song, which is why he's also being sued.

I'M A BIT LATE BUT MOST TIMES IT TAKES SO LONG TO SUE SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY HAVE A FEW THINGS TO GO THRU B4 THEY GET TO THE ACTUAL SUING PART. AND SHE IS NAMED CAUSE SHE SANG THE SONG AND PROFITED FROM IT. A LAW SUIT USUALY NAMES EVERYONE INVOLVED, EVEN IF THE SINGER JUST SANG THE SONG. AND THERE ARE TIMES WHEN A PERSON OR COMPANY MAKES A SONG AND SELLS IT OR WHATEVER TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON OR GROUP. THATS WHY A LOT OF SONGS SOUND A LIKE BY DIFFERENT PERFORMERS. ITS NOT CAUSE THEY STOLE THE SONG ITS BECAUSE THEY GOT THE SONG FROM THE SAME PRODUCER(S). SO IN MARY'S DEFENCE, SHE MAY NOT HAVE HEARD THE SONG AND WANTED TO SING IT AND DIDN'T REALIZE THAT EVERYTHING WASN'T CLEARED B4 RECORDING IT. BUT SHE SHOULD HAVE. AND SOMETIMES PERFORMERS DON'T CARE IF THEIR SONG SOUNDS SIMILAR TO ANOTHER SONG OR IS THE EXACT SONG SANG BY SOMEONE ELSE, THEY THINK THAT THEIR'S IS BETTER AND WILL DO BETTER THAN THE OTHER ONE.

Jay-Z bite biggie's whole catalog!, Big L, Nas, Yung Cris, just to name a few. I listen 2 Jay but he's the problem with New York Rap, no originality. That's the reason south (and west coast before) got the game on lock, cause it's fresh. It's getting 2 the point that they spit over new york inspired beats and new york mcs try 2 sound like their from the south (50 and Cam'ron perfect examples). Jay-Z been biting 4 a loong time, no hate, just the truth.

DISCLAIMER: I might sway just a tad off the main subject.
I too think Jay-Z is a 'chameleon' of sorts; Heads on here can't say that most of you don't have his material in your personal collection. Anyway, J carried the game on his back for a minute though- think about where you were or the shit you was doing that you could use a particular song from his catalogs as a soundtrack. The shelf-life of most Hip Hop personalities in the game is very short because they don't morph with the mainstream. Think of the cats that he recorded tracks with, producers he's worked with over the years whose careers are footnotes nowadays; they discovered (too late) that Hip Hoppers are a fickle bunch at any age and we represent a very large demographic- (what, 8yrs of age to about 50yrs of age now?). J kept people around him that knew what the streets was feeling and he moved in a lot of circles. WTF, y'all mad cause he manipulated the game and didn't let us chew him up and spit him out like we would've done B.I.G., Pun, and Pac? We would've grown tired of their subject matter as well if they had lived and didn't make some adjustments to their material or their delivery. We made Jigga as large as he is partly because of the ABSENCE of B.I.G., Pun, and Pac. Hell, I grew tired of Fiddy after his 2nd album mainly because he keep talking that recycled shit; nothing but beef. His mind needs to catch up to his money; them suburban kids keep him relevant to Hip Hop.
I'll end this by saying 'No Homo' but damn respect 'Longevity.'
Big-ups to LL Cool Jay another Godfather in the game.
