Soulja Boy Concert Draws UMD Student Protest

Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em may have many fans, but the rapper attracted a different crowd for a recent performance at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The Duluth News Tribune reports the concert, which was held last Friday (April 3) at the school’s Romano Gym, attracted a group of students who staged a protest in response to what they deemed as “degrading lyrics” towards women.

For protest organizer Arielle Schnur, the decision to book Soulja Boy for the show demonstrated a lack of judgement by the UMD student entertainment committee, which selected the rapper for the concert based on budget, the university’s schedule versus an artists’ availability and the popularity of the artist among students.

Committee members capatilized on Soulja Boy's standing on the Billboard charts as well as his affordable performance fee to secure a guaranteed concert appearnance.

Schnur referenced the Soulja Boy’s song, “Pimp Slap Dat Hoe,” as an example of the type of content she found troubling.

The track contains the lyrics: “Pimp slap dat hoe man, show her what you know man, Give her what she need man right side her face man.”

“This isn’t OK for this to happen,” the UMD student told the Tribune. “To bring in an artist that degrades half the student body as sex objects and the other half as sexual assault perpetrators; that form of degradation is not acceptable.”

“The issue with the Soulja Boy concert is that it’s happening at UMD and UMD is an institution of higher learning,” she added. “His lyrics are not conducive to an atmosphere of enlightenment and education.”

Stationed outside the gym, protestors made their views known as they peacefully gathered without preventing concertgoers from attending the Soulja Boy or disrupting the show.

The group followed the demonstration with its own concert in Kirby Lounge that featured local groups and artists.

The protest came as a surprise to Soulja Boy who weighed in on the opposition before taking the stage in front of a sold out crowd.

“WTF I'm in Minnesota its a group of maf**kaz prtoesting my show this sh*t on all the news!!,” the rapper stated via his Twitter.com page. “Mann these people better get the f**k on! I could have been In New York new jointing 'Turn My Swag On'!!!! They say I'm breaking a record for the people attending the show tonight, umma act a fool!!!!”

Despite the presence of protestors, Soulja Boy admitted to the show coming off well.

“Just got off stage!!! I shut it downnn!!!!... That was like the best show I ever did umma put A Bonus DVD that show in my reloaded album release,” he Twittered. “I just wanna let every1 who came to my show tonight kno I had a REAL GOOD time here! Thanks for the love, best time I had on tour in a while”

The UMD protest is the latest in a string of criticism leveled at Soulja Boy, who has come under fire for his lyrics since coming on the scene with his hit single “Crank That (Soulja Boy).”

The rapper is currently enjoying in the popularity of his #1 single, “Kiss Me Thru the Phone,” the second single off his latest album, iSouljaBoyTellem.

Why don't these protesters argue against the radio stations that want play local artist in their town instead of blaming the rapper who comes to their town? Go to the source of the problem instead of trying to make the headlines.

You can't blame Soulja Boy he didn't make the school book him nor did he make the people come to the show..

Laughable comments. Soulja Boy is only a kid, leave him alone or you can't blame him...word? lol come on stop making excuses for the lyrics he wrote, he is responsible for it whether it's wack or not. He's adult enough to spend his money on ridiculous chains that don't retain their value, he's old enough to start and end a publicity beef over Lambos with Bow Wow but when it comes to him being criticized for his lyrics suddenly aww he's a kid, leave him alone? Insane. You can't say he's not responsible for being booked when he had to have accepted their terms and signed a contract, it's not like dude just showed up and performed. The organizer admittedly used an error in judgment and would've never booked him if she knew about some of his lyrics beforehand and again SB is responsible for his lyrics and how people respond to them.

This is what happens when you deal with an "educated" crowd. They actually listen to the lyrics rappers say. So kudos to those women protesting against a rapper who degrades them. It's wonderful to see people standing up for what right. If they don't want him there based on that reason alone then it's OK with me.

***Now just picture if Soulja Boy were a white male and was rapping bad about black people what do you think blacks would do? Right...they would go and protest. So don't get angry at these students standing up to what they feel is right.***

He should perform them lyrics in a strip club where there are real hoes who would appreciate that shit not a fuckin college , what a asshole

But i'm going to defend the admittedly wack  lyrically defficient poetically challenged Soulja Boy  because like a lot of teenagers nowaday who adopt rap culture hes grown up and seen a lot of rappers just follow the format of the rappers whos hot at the time and thats normally some crab nigga talking bout hes a pimp , gangsta , drug dealer playa

right now the major record labels ain't promoting no artist who speaking real shit for the everyday struggle of the common woman man and child , all there dealing with is niggas selling fantasies

examples:
Lil Wayne claiming hes a gangsta and a blood

Rick Ross denying his past and over the top stories of
                pushing weight

Truth is Hip Hop at the commercial end is pure choreagraph and glamourisation of stereotypes that are being acted out in ridiculous looking charicatures

Truth is commercial Hip Hop has been in decline way way way before Soulja Boy started spouting off these recent pimp slappin aspirations

Thats why when lil bitches like him get robbed at gunpoint i don't give a fuck

Truth is most of these rappers today display mysoginistic imagery in there music and its the females buying most there cds and packing out there shows DOING BOOTY DANCES TO THERE SONGS "FACT"

So there needs to be a little more consistency in these protests for it to be even slightly more effective in changing the attitudes of the artists labels AND THE BUYING PUBLIC

I agree with you.  He can rap.  I don't agree that he is better than 50.  Fif is much more fun and much more commercial.  Ross is way too dark and boring, because he tells fairytales.  See Biggie told fairytales too, as well as Pac, but the difference was in the style of the way they did it.

For example, Biggie was like a Hood Reporter, you understand, he told you how it was from what he saw.  I think they did Biggie injustice in that film of his life because they tried to give him street cred as a drug dealer and Biggie really was a good kid.

Pack too, he never got in trouble until he got in the lime light and I suspect he stirred up that arrest in Oakland where he said the cops beat he so he could get press.  The point is, Ross is a fraud in respect to being a flat out liar and if he is lying about that, than you can't trust him.

It is not about the music.  Hey, he made a few, not many, but I would say three hood burners that I like. "Hustling" was infectious, "Mafia Music" was good and the "Magnificent" remake, (which I give him half credit for because it wasn't orginal:  Special Ed, who I like everything he did)

So, I don't hate Ross skills.  I just think that he was in no position to talk shit to anybody, especially after he was barely hanging on to a career.  People can argue with me until the moon turns bleeds, but Ross doesn't have the industry props to pop shit to 50 or any artist.  He should be grateful that he slipped through the system and go a little love.  No pun attended on slipped, Slip N Slide was a good label for him, LOL.

In all seriousness, celebrities are like politicians, we accept them, like we vote for politicians and if you show your ass, we impeach you from office.  Same thing with an artist, if you show your ass, we starve you by not buying your shit and you fail.  I think Ross has a responsibility to earn his way in the game with good music and leave power houses like 50 out his mouth.

Ross doesn't have the skills, sales, or street cred to go against 50.  So, I have no respect for Ross and if you think about what he could be doing based on his character, why would you support him.  He telling kids that you get rewarded for being a drug dealer.  He is not paying his child support.  He is flossing negativity in every sense of the word.  If you area a:

1. Father (you would not respect Ross, he doesn't support his kids)

2. A Woman (Ross disrespects woman)

3  A Kid (Ross is a horrible roll model and yes rappers are the hood super heros)

4. A fan (Ross has zero credibility and can not be trusted)

5. A novice to hip-hip (Ross is a bad place to start)

Look, 50 is not perfect, he is not that great of an artist, but whole and complete.  50 is a package.  He is marketable, he sells products, clothing, food items, movies, books, radio.  Fif has way more marketability than Ross will every have and Ross owes 50 an apology plane and simple.  He was not there, meaning at that fire, he has no right to dry snitch on 50 about setting a fire to kill his kid.

That was bullshit and Ross should not be allowed to breath for that.  I don't mean die, I mean breath in the game of hip-hop.  So, do I hate Ross, no.  I don't even know him.   But I do love hip-hop and as a supporter of the game and a lover of the sport, I have a right to protest against Ross.  Just like I have a right to protest against a politician who fucked me over.

I will continue to protest against Ross and any other asshole until they fall or I just get burned out with the subject.  In the case of Ross, I promise you, he will not succeed.  This economy is too bad to invest in a cop and trying to shove him down the throats of rap fans who hate cops.  Ross will never make it and he has hung himself good.  The only way he will ever make money in this industry, will be to start a label and sign credible artist and distance himself from the artist as much as possible.

In some many words, Ross will have to be a ghost version of a CEO of a record label.  However, if Ross is so blind by fame, and keeps believing his own bullshit, than he will mutate into a clown and have to go around making fun of himself like William Shatner from Star Trek and start doing Price line commercials.  This is my honest opinion from a neutral perspective.

I don't know about you guys but I thought about Chris Brown while reading this article.  Not saying Chris Brown sings about slapping women, but because today I was watching CNN and they were discussing teens cheering for CB and some white broad was on there blaming HIP HOP.  That pissed me off as a hip hop fan.  All that came out of her mouth was hip hop, the hip hop culture, the hip hop videos, thats all she blamed it on. And it's because of these antics this Soulja BOY pulls that people blame hip hop for shit like the cb/rihanna situation.  This soulja boy kid is a disgrace and a bad example.

Well I guess we shouldn't expect to hear Chris Brown on any of his remixes any time soon with lyrics like:

- "Pimp slap dat hoe man, show her what you know man, Give her what she need man right side her face man."

Seriously, I've only ever consciously listened to 2 Souljah Boy records, so I don't know what he's about, but his reaction to the protest was plain juvenile (which is what he is really - a juvenile, mentally).

Still, in the free world there is choice right? A choice to buy or listen to any type of music you want to, a choice to protest about anything you want to and a choice to not give a f*ck about any of the above.

Souljah Boy will always have an audience, so long at the kids care to listen.
