Jay-Z Concert Loses Nearly $1 Million

Jay-Z’s superstar presence was not enough to make a recent Arizona Stadium concert a success, as event promoters confirmed the show posted a loss of $917,000.

The Last Smash Platinum Bash was organized by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA), who paid Jay-Z $750,000 to co-headline the event with pop star Kelly Clarkson.

The strange pairing was not enough to entice potential concertgoers.

Arizona Stadium, which is known for football, had not hosted a concert in 32 years.

According to estimates, the student union gave away over 4000 tickets in hopes of securing valuable marketing deals with newspapers and radio stations.

Despite these issues, ASUA president Tommy Bruce blamed the failure on the Recession.

“Nobody predicted the economy would be the way it is now last May,” he told the Arizona Daily Star.

In total, the concert cost $1,420,000, while tickets and merchandise purchases only posted $503,502.

The loss forced the ASUA to empty its$350,000 cash reserve to cover the debt.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, the Arizona University’s bookstore will assist the ASUA in paying off the debt through another established emergency fund.

As a consequence, the UA Bookstore organization will also lower its contributions to the student group by $570,000 over the next 5 years.

At press time, Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 is tentatively aimed at a September 2009 release date.

From what I've read about this before the ticket prices were something ridiculous. People out there are willing to pay to see Jigga and Kelly Clarkson but not if it means putting themselves into further debt doing it. If they didn't charge so much then they would've filled the stadium easily. Stupid business on the university's side, they should know people are more reluctant to pay out nowadays

JohnnyACE562 said:

Poe, it's not about any recession. Jay-Z is just no longer worth those high ticket prices @ this point in his career. That what Live Nation and the rest of the corporation just don't GET. Jay-Z is past his prime. He had a prolific career but it's just about over for him now. It's not a question of his age; his flow is dated now and less and less people are moved by it. His time is up. It's time for him to step aside and let new blood take the center stage. He can either get the message now or keep on seeing his concert sales dwindle until he's rapping to empty stands or until the execs get sick of losing money on him, whichever comes first.

The Jay-Z stans are STILL around, they're STILL in complete denial, and they're STILL using the same tired argument about money to defend Hov's ever-growing irrelevance...yet STILL they aren't going to be enough of a die-hard following to keep their idol in the limelight. Just face it, sheep. It's ova for Hova. It's time for him to retire for good this time and invest all his money wisely.

He'd also better keep a close eye on his chick Beyonce. That female is very suspect and seems untrustworthy. I applaud Jay-Z for his success but he'd better not end up losing a healthy part of his hard-earned fortune thru alimony payments and/or child and spousal support. Beyonce definitely comes off as the narcissistic, conniving type.

$140? Well there you go. That's about £92 over here which is ridiculous for that. You can go to loads of summer festivals here for the day and see more artists for a lot cheaper then that. It clearly wasn't worth paying all that money and the reason why they got themselves in the red by $1million

--------------------------------------------

There's no money in selling records though and Live Nation knows it. Everytime Madonna does a world tour she sells it out guaranteed. Last year she made $105 million touring alone when considering she signed that deal for $120 million that's not bad business. There's basically no one bigger then Jigga at the moment in Hip Hop. Who else could headline a festival like Glastonbury and pack out the field for example or go on massive stadium tours around the world? He's even playing at Wembley stadium with Coldplay later this year which is as big as you can get, he's clearly not over yet. I just don't get why so many people are calling him irrelevant or calling for him to retire when he's still clearly one of the best doing it and people are still checking him out. Blueprint 3 ain't even out yet for fuck's sake

End of the day Live Nation knows album sales make fuck all money nowadays and they wouldn't have signed up the artists they have for the price they did if they wouldn't be getting their cash back

First off..BUFEZY -

You have no idea what youre talking about. This concert was held at the University of Arizona. ASUA stands for Associated Students of the University of Arizona (it is the student government). It has NO AFFILIATION to ASU (Arizona State University). They are two completely different Universities. ASU dissed on Obama, not U of A. Either way...that is a stupid ass reason for someone not to go to a concert.

ISMOKEHEAVY -
This has nothing to do with Black and White man. Agreed they have two different fan bases, but it isnt a white and black thing. This concert was in Tucson, Arizona. The only black people there were the ones on the football and basketball teams.

Alright, this article fails to mention the other two acts at the concert. Third Eye Blind and the Veronicas! Crazy lineup. I was there to see Third Eye Blind and Jay-Z. Jay put on an amazing show, but it is not his fault the show failed. It was ASUA, two main reasons. The didnt even open 1/5th of the available seats in Arizona Stadium. And second tickets were WAY over priced. Good Tickets were $216. I paid $100 for my ticket and Im in row 50! It doesnt take a real genius to see why the concert did so poor financially, especially when its designed to draw in college students.

Dude u can't compare Em and Dre's situation to this...totally different...Jay uses all of those producers that u speak of, but he also opens up to up and coming producers as well..has nothing to do with money...ANYBODY..maybe even you, can get a hot producer for a song and supposedly make it a hit..but that formula doesnt always work...Jay is at a space where he doesn't have to have the big producers behind his shit .....his catelog speaks for itself...think about how many rappers will spend upwards of a million dollars for one or 2 beats from the producer....kill damn near their whole album budget for one or 2 songs and the album still flops...

HOT97 SAYS: I agree... People talk about Rick Ross not selling any records, but on the other hand people fail to realize that times are hard people are trying to hold on to the little money that they have...And especially giving our money away to these rappers that turn around and flash it in our faces, who is wants to do that..

JAY-Z is a great rapper but this will effect his rap resume..Note to all rappers it can happen to them too..No one is safe anymore...

because one show lost money now people wanna say jay-z fell off get the fuck out of here, jay the goat, maybe jay-z fans didnt want to sit thru listenin to kelly clarkson and vice versa i think the opposite crowds ran each other away, it was an experiment that went wrong

HOT97 SAY: So when Rick Ross'es numbers came out no-one fell this way..Why is it a double standard? Just because Ross didnt sell a million you people claim that he is wack..
Well shit the same thing goes for Jay-z..He cant sell out shows so he is now on the wack list too..Fair is fair

Perfect example of a stan in denial. They get all butt-hurt and angry when you talk about their washed-up hero. The reason Jay-Z didn't sell out concerts back in the day is because he never was that hot in the first place either. People fall for hype VERY easily nowadays.

Just get used to the fact that Jay-Z ain't sellin out any concerts anymore. It's over for him. Time to retire.

GreasySupreme and HOT97 know the score. Get @ me, fellas.
