With a career filled with musical and acting accomplishments, Queen Latifah has more than made a name for herself in the eyes of observers and fans while keeping a careful watch over details over her personal life.

But in an interview with Essence magazine, the rapper/actress opens up about being a victim of sexual abuse during her childhood.

According to Latifah, the abuse occurred over a period of time at the hands the hands of a teenager charged with watching her.

"He violated me," the entertainer said in the latest issue of the magazine. "I never told anybody; I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arm's distance. I never really let a person get too close to me. I could have been married years ago, but I had a commitment issue."

Despite the drama, Latifah chose to remain quiet about the abuse.

It wasn’t until the death of her brother when she was 22-years-old that she decided to tell her parents about what happened.

“I knew that I couldn't carry his death and that secret," Latifah shared. "I had to get it off my chest. My mother felt terrible. She was kind of a country girl, so she wasn't up on how slick people could be. When I told my dad, he said nothing."

With her father’s response, Latifah admitted it was scary as she told Essence that "he's a man of action."

Years later, the rapper, who blamed herself for the sexual abuse, has finally come to terms with her ordeal after speaking with her therapist.

"I was a kid, and I had no power or control over the situation. I really wish I'd had the strength and the knowledge to say something sooner, because I always wondered, Did he do that to someone else? But I accept that the time for action has come and gone," said Latifah, who is moving forward after being at peace with her traumatic past.

“There are some places I'd like to see, some young 'uns I hope to raise, but other than that, I've done a lot of what I've wanted to do," she said. "Everything else is icing on the cake."

It's real sad that  a lot of our black children get abused and molested. But we don't talk about it, as if it's bad to do so. Props to Queen L for making it through. She can be an example to anyone who hasn't let something such as abuse stop them from living a productive and more or less positive life.

    -------

They are not tortured or executed because they are of a devil nature and are merely acting within the evil of their nature. This society perpetuates this behavior often by supplying loopholes to keep devilish people from coming to justice. But there is a universal justice that is inescapable, as well as universal reparations for said victims.

Hip Hop GM, her sexual preference has nothing to do with her being abused. Lesbian or not. That didn't stop the fact that she might have been abused (as so many of our black children have been). In fact, that might have contributed to her sexual preference at this point. Either way, it's not far fetched that she could have endured abuse. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of these celebrities have been abused. The fame just compounded their problems not make it better. They are human, and they did have a life before they were famous, before the world knew who they were. I'm pretty sure her brother's death didn't halp matters any either.

I know a lot of things are done to drum up publicity. But Queen L doesn't need it. She's already past that point in her life/career. Maybe this is something she just never shared with anybody until now. Just because you know some things about someone, doesn't mean they discuss or let everybody know every aspect of their life. Because they don't. Just a thought.

But these women STILL manage to move forward and do the damn thing!

Meanwhile, back in the projects, JoJo the dope boy is mad at the world because nobody will listen to him freestyle.

As for Queen Latifah being gay...I've heard that before.  All I know is I think she's big and beautiful, and until she comes out and says that she's gay, then she ain't gay.  Too many gay rumors runnin' around about our black folks and we're the ones who spread those rumors.

I wish her the best in continuing to deal with this. As others have pointed out, abuse and sexual orientation are not mutually exclusive so one doesn't correlate to the other. Abuse of any kind is a crime of power not sex even if the abuse is sexual. It's about one person taking advantage of another seemingly vulnerable person. Since none of us know Dana personally (and if you did I doubt you'd be on this site) we should take this as an opportunity to remind any young people we know personally to speak to a trusting adult if they feel something inappropriate happens otherwise the long-term damage of keeping it in can be fatal.
