Lil Wayne Performance Sparks Controversy

Sunday's BET Awards may have scored its largest audience for the network, but the event’s producers are coming under fire for a performance featuring Grammy winning rap star Lil Wayne.

The entertainer’s set, which featured fellow rapper Drake and a troupe of teenage dancers, was met with criticism from Columbia University clinical instructor Dr. Janet Taylor, who questioned BET CEO Debra Lee for green lighting Lil Wayne’s performance of his hit song “Every Girl” despite the risqué dance from the teens on stage.

“Perhaps, they are what our kids are used to. I have teenagers, girls no less, who have heard the song and like it,” Taylor told MomLogic.com while referencing the song’s lyrics. “My problem was with the preteens who were proudly onstage, shaking their groove thang to this misogynistic, disrespectful song. It was ridiculous. Debra Lee, the CEO of BET, also the mother of two children, should be asking herself who approved this and how these young girls were allowed to be a part of this 'act.'"

Taylor’s comments come days after an emotional night at the BET Awards.

Nielsen Media Research shows the Jamie Foxx-hosted show, which was dedicated to the memory of music icon Michael Jackson, was a ratings success by drawing the cable channel’s largest audience on record with an average of 10.65 million viewers.

As a result, the viewership of this year’s BET Awards was more than any other cable broadcast this year and more than any prime-time show on the major networks.

Despite this, the scholar stated how her daughters thought the rapper's performance "'was strange' and inappropriate."

"They were embarrassed for the girls. I agree," Taylor added.

Representatives have not responded to the criticism as of press time.

Man, I'm missing the show ya'll watched.  While I do agree that Lil Wayne's performance was completely inappropriate, the show itself was good overall.  It takes a year to plan out an awards show and they had to completely re-haul all the work they had done over the last several months in 3 DAYS!! C'mon now...what were ya'll lookin for?  I'm a huge fan of MJ and everything his music has meant to us and our people, but what were the options here?  The people being recognized under the original plan have worked hard all year as well and deserved some sort of acknowledgement.  At the same time, there's no way you can completely pay tribute to Michael Jackson in bits and pieces.  MJ would require a telathon's worth of peformances to do it justice.  So what do u do?  If you don't make a mention at all of MJ or something real quick then u know that's yo ass if ur BET.  At the same time let's be real.  Michael Jacksons core fans and BET's core audience ARE NOT THE SAME!!! So there still is some business responsibility to the core fans of the artists who were to be acknowledged.  In all honestly, there should have been ( and I'm sure there will be ) a completely seperate program to honor MJ the right way.  But to have to scrap a years plan and revamp in 3 days ( counting the day of the show ) is a JOB!! If you don't recognize that, you might be a little slow or have just never had to really plan anything.  RIP MJ - Greatest Ever!

Well 1. Wayne is drake mentor.. 2. I honestly  think performing more then 1 song from his stool woulda been a bit embarrasing..

i havnt seen the whole award show, but i did see the performance.

Does this really shock you that Wayne would do this? Drake looked mad umcomfy and i cant fathom him Oking this idea...

    look wayne was probly like

Dude, how do you tell another person how to grieve?? Ya'll missing me with some of these sensitive, illigical statements.  So if you were grieving a certain way and I walked up to you 2 days after ur loss and told you what I think you SHOULD be doing, that would be ok??? If they weren't the "Jackson's" I'm sure we wouldn't have known they were out in public ( although Joe is missing me with the way he's handling this ).  But even then, I'll give a certain amount of space cause like I said, everyone does NOT handle grief the same and to make judgements is the absolute WORST thing you could do at a time like that.  Does anyone think anymore?  Damn.........

I didn't watch the whole thing, it seemed thrown together, last minute when Mike passed.  The show got so much support because people were hurt about losing the greatest artist in the last 50 years.  There will hopefully be more meaningful tributes in the months to come.  BET still had to have their show and support the best, and I think everyone came because of Mike, not because they were winning something.  (Every Girl) is a song (Every Man) has secretly wrote in his head many times, women are beautiful, I love them to death, and wish I could do exactly as the song says, but I hold you in too high a regard to just f(&* you, you should be loved, and they should have changed the lyrics, at least for that night (agian I didn't see it).  I think sometimes the message is not received because of the person giving it, I'm sure if there were little kids on stage, that for sure didn't help, I didn't see it and I'm glad my two daughters missed it too.  Dr. Taylor continue your good work helping women and young girls reach their potential and helping others out of abusive situations.  This show will be forgotten by the time we get through the next 4 or 5 tributes, although Jamie did a hell of job trying to hold it together for everybody.  Instead of Shenana and Wanda, can I get the cat from that Islamic movie you did to team up with the Bad Boys and take out an African dictator in a movie?  I'll write the script, cause that would be a Blockbuster.

BET BET BET.   Who on here remembers when you turned on BET that the only thing you seen were music videos.  Isnt that what BET was for Black Music and Entertainment.  I understand that they were brought out by Viacomm and what not along wit VH1 and MTV but I dont want to turn on BET and see old episodes of The Game which they replay even thought they cut it short or see any other shows they have to offer that other stations like TBS or TNT or TVOne is already offering.  I dont want to see reality shows I want to see Rachel I want to see Donnie Simpons I want to see Big Lez or Big Tigger or Joe Claire.  What happened to that.  Ive been lost respect for BET yea I watch certain shows but not rarely do I actually check to see what they have to offer anymore.  The awards were ok I do believe they over hyped the Michael thing a lil too much and then fell short of what they advertised but who doesnt these days.  Whatever happened to Comic View.  BET Uncut 106 and Park when it was fun to watch.  I mean there is what one video show on BET now and its 106 and Park and they dont even show the whole video which makes it so pointless to me.  They need to figure out a way to get people back to watchin their station again because I really dont respect the channel anymore.  I didnt really pay attention to the Lil Wayne/Yound Money performance because I knew they were gonna edit out shit they they shouldnt and not edit the shit they should.  So two thumbs down to BET cause its stands for Black Entertainment Television and since Viacom has bought them out they are more like "Blah Entertainment Television"

If you view Wayne's performance in bad taste you might be a child molester. What I seen, was a little girl on stage with her dad, who is a very famous person. She was not thinking about the meaning or lyrics of that song, MJ, or the ten million people watching her. If your farther was famous, would you want to be seen on t.v. with him? Thats him being a parent, and spending time with his daughter. The fact that she was on t.v. made her happy. Why should she have to sit backstage.

Get the fuck out of here whit the Nancy Grace shit. Why the fuck you notice 13 year old girls? Was they singing the shit. Lil Wayne literally has the right to say whatever he wants and BET has the right to air whatever they want. This is the same channel that gave him a fuckin diamond studded styrofoam cup for his syrup. Besides that, I saw the MTV Movie Awards and they were just as raunchy. Me personally, I would never let my kids watch something live like that. Those were their kids on stage. Why is everybody worried about someone else's kids?

For the girls dancing, I'm sure the parents had to sign off on some type of documentation for the performance. The Parents share the blame too. People need to look at all sides of the situation before complaining or voicing a concern.

    Truth is:

The girls, one being Wayne's daughter and another being TI's stepdaughter (Tiny's daughter) + 2 friends, are a little group called OMG Girlz or something, and they went on stage during Reginae's dads [wayne's] performance to give themselves some shine and camera time.  I read this on Tiny's and Toya's twitter pages before the performance and show. The girls probably didn't even think anything of the song and the fact that them dancing to it would look inappropriate, they are pretty young, all that probably mattered to them was that they were going to be on stage doing a little choreographed dance.

    RIP Mike.

He didn't even say "I wish I could fuck every girl in the world", he said "love every girl in the world". He tried to clean it up somewhat, given the situation. Most of the words were censored because BET knew the original song. I honestly don't understand the double standard here. Kids doing a dance routine on stage is different from kids dancing even dirtier at your local middle school dances. A lot of people don't like Wayne, so of course he's going to be blamed for something that wasn't even considered as mildly inappropriate compared to the average preteen. For instance, I lost my virginity at 11, and I was one of the "late bloomer". It's ridiculous to be offended by a single person on BET, especially when your preteen's ringtone is "Birthday Sex". You gotta see where I'm going with this.

I think eazyroots hit the nail on the head. And Juvenile - 400 Degreez is Cash Money's biggest selling record. I mean personally, I thought the performance was inappropriate considering the tone of the event. But overall I thought it was pretty well put together, considering the time frame. And does anyone know for sure that Wayne's daughter was on stage during his performance? I know he brought her up on stage when he acceptted his award. I think those girls just appearred young because of how they were dressed in those Catholic school girl uniforms. But let's be real, some of y'all didn't have a problem with it 'til somebody else called it degrading. I'm sure all those girls got paid and I didn't see any of them being forced on stage at gunpoint. I honestly didn't think Wayne's performance was anymore inappropriate than Soulja Boy's. To me the most inappropriate part of the whole show was at the beginning on the red carpet when Joe Jackson introduced his business partner and plugged his new label. Considerring how MJ felt about him, I don't think he should've been allowed at the show. They sure as hell shouldn't have let his sorry ass speak. Why wasn't Janet sitting with him at the show? But I don't think BET's to blame. I think they just mistakingly assumed Lil Wayne had more sense than that.

I can say that the girls coming on stage was not something known before the show. I can say that Drake as an individual did not know the little girls were coming on stage. As for Wayne, because he didn't come to any of the Rehearsals I can't say If that was planned or known or not.

Overall I do agree that there should have been a more tasteful selection rather than "Every Girl" approved by BET because regardless of the song, LiL Wayne does not have a reputation for music that is appropriate for young teens in general. And Mis me with all that "it's not as bad as what teens are doing in Middle school stuff" So your saying it's ok to continue promoting sex to kids that emotionally are not ready for the notion let alone the physical act.

I watched the awards 2 times and I did not see the girls on stage dancing, I only saw the part when they were walking off stage.  I understand why people are upset about him having the barely teenage girls on stage one being his daughter dancing to a sexual song.  But my concern is at the end of the song they begin to shout out all the women they want to have sex with and one is 15 yr old Miley Cyrus.  I thought that was very disrespecful as well as inapprpriate for 3 grown ass men to tell young Miley to holler at them in a couple years.  That right there is telling me that they are fantasizing about a young girl.  If people gonna be mad about the situation,be mad about that part too.  How come nobody brought that part up?

I HAVE LOST SO MUCH RESPECT FOR BET.
1ST--THE BET AWARD SHOW WAS THE WORST AWARD SHOW/TRIBUTE TO MICHEAL JACKSON I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.

2ND-- LIL WAYNE HAS LOST HIS GOT DAMN MIND. YOU GOT LITTLE GIRLS ON STAGE WHILE YOU ARE PERFORMING A SONG ABOUT FUCKING ALL THE GIRLS IN THE WORLD.( ARE YOU SAYING YOU WANT TO FUCK 10-12 YEAR OLDS).

3RD--JAMIE FOXX TOTALLY MADE A ASS OF HIMSELF

4TH-- THE JACKSON FAMILY SHOULD SUE DEBRA LEE FOR DISGRACING HER SON LIKE THAT.

5TH--BET SHOULD OF DONE THE REGULAR SHOW AND GAVE A 15MINUTE TO MJ, THEN CAME ALONG LATER IN THE WEEK AN PUT TOGETHER A REAL TRIBUTE TO THE KING OF POP. THAT WOULD OF GIVEN THE PARTICIPANTS ENOUGH TIME TO GET THERE SHIT TOGETHER.

6TH-- WHERE IN THE HELL WAS USHER AND CHRIS BROWN?
THESE ARE TWO THE THE PEOPLE THAT I CANT THINK OF WHO WOULD GIVEN A BRIGHT SPOT TO THIS DARK CLOUD.

AND LAST, THE NEXT TIME YOU(BET) WANT TO TRIBUTE A FALLEN STAR, MAKE SURE THINK HOW YOU WOULD WANT IT TO PLAY OUT IF IT WAS YOUR FAMILY.

    SHAME ON YOU BET!
