It's funny you mention the jealousy factor. I dunno what went down with Guru & Premo, but he does seem bitter in recent interviews about anything Premo, or Gangstarr related. As much as Guru is/was my dude, no rappers really called him for collabos, yet every rapper wanted a Premo beat. It seemed like yesterday when I was at the Big Pun "Yeah Baby" album release party at Jimmy Bx Cafe, and I ran into them at the bar. Both of 'em was real cool, and we was kickin' it, & tossin' 'em back like we knew each other for years.

..yeah that's what i was saying up there i just saw what you wrote. I think he pissed at Premo still cuz outta Gang Starr Premo always got the most attention. Let's be honest here when we hear or think about Gang Starr tracks whats 1st thing we say? Damn premo beat is hot. Prob only a few times in your life did you hear someone say dammmn you hear what Guru just said or damn Guru be flowing!! Not often and that's where i think his attitude towards Premo comes from.

To build on what you said regarding Guru and Preme's rift, I think it comes down to legacy. Guru is considered a legend but only within the realm of Gang Starr. Premo is considered a legend within Gang Starr and probably a bigger one outside of Gang Starr. Even deeper, it may not be common knowledge (or maybe it is) but Guru originally started Gang Starr in Boston with Big Shug and was making records before Premo even joined the group. So, I guess in his eyes, he felt Preme was getting too much of the credit for the success of the group when it was something that HE, meaning Guru, started. Maybe there was something deeper than that, who knows? The bigger question is what kind of hold does Solar have on Guru that he got Guru talkin' slick about Preme every chance he gets? Guru and Preme has had volatile moments in their relationship. I remember back in the day, Premier was in Rap Pages (remember that mag?) talkin' about how they got into mad fistfights and even a shootout or two but the love for the music kept them bonded. I hope Guru has a speedy recovery and that somewhere down the line him and Preme can squash their beef, or at least Guru can squash his 'cause Preme ain't the one beefin'.

The attention Premo got over Guru, the same can be said for Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Pete was killing the beats and CL was an incredible lyricist, but PR always got the acclaim because of his beats. Other rappers wanted a Pete beat, but outside of Heavy D, I can't think of a verse CL laid except for the PR/CL albums back in them days.

Guru might have started Gangstarr, but Premo made it what it was, and Guru handpicked Premo to be his dj/producer. I remember when people thought Guru's emcee name WAS Gangstarr (ex: Nice N Smooth's "Down The Line"). But once "Just To Get A Rep" (one of Guru's best by the way) dropped, and the Step In The Arena LP dropped, it started to be about Premo's beats. Premo MADE you wanna listen to Jeru. Premo MADE you wanna listen to Group Home (who lyrically wasn't all that). In all fairness, I haven't heard anything by Guru & Solar except some disco sounding sh*t a few years ago, and I passed. IMO he NEEDS that Premo heat in his life when he touches a mic, sans the Jazzmatazz projects.

I really hope him and premo get back together but from his statement I guess thats never gonna happena. Im not feelin the jazzmatazz s**tbut still he is one of my favs and hope he recover to the fullest.

Hell of a name, by the way, lol. Yeah, Pete and CL's relationship mirrors Guru and Preme's, unfortunately. Imagine if both duos went back in ONE more time. I need that in my life right now. During the first couple of albums, say, up to Daily Operation, Preme was dope but he hadn't found his signature sound yet, so the acclaim between him and Guru was a little more balanced. It was after Preme's coming out party on KRS' Return of the Boom Bap and the subsequent work he got (Nas, Biggie, MOP, not to mention Jeru's first joint and Hard to Earn) that things shifted more toward Preme and maybe Guru gradually started resenting dude. Regardless, no one can lace Guru like Preme but Guru doesn't realize that or won't admit it.

This is to everyone...and hopefully Guru cuz I know he reads up on posts. Guru IS Hip Hop... any real head knows wassup. And everyone who shits on solar isn't only doing it cuz of primo...we do it cuz its just the real. Hes wack and wicked.
