Our names have been stolen, changed, and given back to us in the form of a label or brand. It wasn't enough for white men to just refer to us as slaves, they had to BRAND us with a special name: NIGGER....DERIVED FROM THE LATIN NEGRO- (Black, Black object)- Which itself is derived from the Greek word NECRO- meaning (dead, or death.)
It also implies that we have no homeland or history beyond being conquered. Caucasians, Mongoloids, etc have NAMES that refer to a land, a history, an experience that goes beyond just being slaves or a conquered group of people.

And I do agree that the meaning and significance of words change as we change history. The fact that we have taken Nigger and replaced the "er" with an "A" is a testament to our instinct to survive even after being labeled with a name that originates from DEATH. It doesn't make it ok though.

As a collective of hip-hop enthusiasts, many of us have agreed to accept the negative as affirmation of our survival against all odds. That's the conditioning of "SYSTEMS" in which none of us "cogs" in this hip-hop machine want to stop the wheels of our "Nigga" system from turning. Hip-Hop also gave the "Invisible Men" that Ralph Ellison eloquently described in his book so long ago a way to be visible through the use of two turntables and a Mic. So we loudly proclaimed that "The NIGGA is still here!" whether that was good or bad.
White men responded, "Oh yeah, the Nigger is still here; And in the same way that "niggas" rob each other to survive in our urban jungles, the white man robbed NIGGERS of our publishing, beat us for distribution of OUR product, and still reserve the right to Censor us when they choose to!

Even knowing all that, we get angrier with Julian Bond and the NAACP than we do with the white man who branded us with that NIGGER name in the first place. Niggers survive, NiggAs survive with an attitude about it, but can a Nigga progress to a position of dominance in this global economy and community? That's what we should ask OURSELVES and be sure of before we crucify the NAACP and continue to declare ourselves NIGGAS.

I think a lot of people are missing the point: the simple fact is, Don Imus said something fucked up, and it suddenly became very obvious that it would be very hypocritical if we were to castigate him for it, and not turn the mirror on our own behavior and the things we promote. Burying the N-word may seem a little cheesy, but I think it's something symbolic, and is about policing ourselves and recognizing the impact that our music has on the world around us.

Incidentally, I thought it was odd that Starr (formerly of Hot 97) got all up in J-Lo's ass (figuratively, of course) for using the <a href="http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2001/07/29/MN183785.DTL">N-word back in the day</a> - his beef was that she's Puerto Rican and shouldn't be able to use the word in her song. Somebody should bring that up with Pun, Fat Joe, Cuban Link, etc., etc.

Oh, and another thing - if the current crop of Black leaders is so terrible, how come nobody else is stepping up to fill the void? Challenge the status quo!

First and foremost, I want to state that I have been an active and vivid reader of this site, and I enjoy logging on every night and reading the news, rumors, post, etc. I wanted to make a comment about the NAACP stand and views about the N word, or H word or any derogatory words that plague our society and what I have to say is just a little insight of my opinion and views of the issues. I do applaud the NAACP for their efforts of trying to rekindle the social awareness and reform that is needed in our black community, but how they are going about it is all wrong. NAACP are really just downplaying the big and broader issues that face our community. I feel we should target issues about poverty level, lack of education, crime, substance abuse, health education(HIV/AIDS and STDs) that have such a tremendous negative downward affect on our community. These issues should be addressed. Instead of trying to gain politcal respect from whites and a pat on the back from financial influential blacks (Oprah, etc.) we should face these issues face on. Why do most celebrities go outside the country and establish these schools and charity work and organization, instead of helping our community. We need to work on the internal before trying to fix the external. I am of Nigerian descent so I am not hating on the fact that they do go to these countries, but why so much hate, jealousy and envy in our country and our community, just a thought....

But we have to take that stance that we want to change inorder for progress to take place....

I agree that the NAACP is full of shit. That's why their president quit. However the Don Ismus thing was not blown out of proportion. First of all he spoke of women who pursuing thier education and wearing basketball uniforms, not ho uniforms. Yes ho's do exist but those women did not deserve that.
