Yea This is International so I am thinking his future radio plays etc.. in other countries his chunck getting bigger even though he paid Interscope and Dre more paid then him cause they put that money up and promoted him. I definitley feel you on that caine crazy thing is the person that I have heard of that has the best record deal is romeo he owns I believe over 75 % which is unheard of. I think soon artist will be distributing and pushing themselves 100 % via the web and they will clear way more money.

@ young caine: 8mile style is em's company and em and dre and 50 own a lot of there own shit. but for a up and coming rapper to get all of there publishing and masters is a damn hard thing to do. That is the way the music companies get alot of there green. its hard to get them to let that go.

You are right, the issue with publishing is having a wide enough net to properly promote it worldwide. A lot of artists don't want to make that kind of investment or they don't have the time. It is a proactive process. They actually shop your catalog and it also has a lot to do with relationships.

The big publishing companies are normally just subsidiaries of the big 3 entertainment companies. So they can easily get more money off a catalog since they own the radio stations and film studios that may re-use the material. They also have investments in a lot of advertising agencies that will use old songs and beats for commercials.

The trick is to lease minority rights to a good publishing company for a limited amount of time. So if you're getting 60% and they are getting 40% for let's say 5 years and then all rights are relinquished back to you it's a pretty good deal. A lot of publishing is 50/50 and that is a pretty good deal. Starting out you want to make sure you have 100% of your publishing and don't start negotiating that until you have a reason to. Most artists signed to record deals won't get 100% though they are lucky if they 25% with some of the deals they be signing. When you are getting less than the publishing company you're getting fucked.

because he recorded songs with people (dr. dre, jay z) and produced music for others (tupac on Loyal to the Game LP, 50 cent) he shares in the publishing of these songs.

Kobalt is about to get PAID...yeah it's gonna be a good look for Em too but nowhere on the same level...

i had a 60/40 split with my old publishing company but i only gave them rights to about 4 songs out of my catalog ( i wanted to see how they moved before i gave up any more material)
i'm glad i did that because i ended up getting a deal on my own without the help of the publishing company...it took a lot of sacrifices (i gave up a 50k job for a night position so i could grind during the day) but the way i see it...you are only truly living if you are doing what you love...
