@ GawgaBwoy770 - i feel ya' fam but to say Jay ain't a good businessman is crazy, dude is worth nearly half a bill! He just bought Artful Dodger (one of the hottest new fashion lines out) for $15 million in addition to a new hotel development they are building in NY... that's good business!

As for the Def Jam artists, the music game as a whole has been murked by the net, so to say it was his fault these artists ain't doing numbers IMO aint whats really happenin'. Now I will give you that he ain't really one to find and develop talent but that doesn't make you a bad business man.

Ya' boy Beans' & Redman did interviews saying how many people try and blame Jay but there are others like LA and the rest of them suits who are all part of the decision making process so it ain't really his fault...

Lastly, Jay wanted Def Jam to make some moves into the digital world and they weren't trying to really do anything like that and the reality of the matter is the days of heads running to the store to buy cd's like it's 98' or 01' are gone - that lil' thing with 50 & Kanye was simply an illusion or gimmick and it ain't gonna work twice, not in hip hop... so the real question is what are these labels gonna do to make people stop downloading albums and/or create their own version of iTunes to get back some of the market share they lost...

Yea, the real heads already dispelled the BS behind it being Jay's fault for albums flopping. But I'd also like to point out that Jay IS worth over $500 million. He DOESN'T need Def Jam's budget money. That and the fact that he's argueably the best rapper alive (overall), he can use his name and influence in pop culture to get spots, and he's even stated that he uses his own money to promote his albums. He has been doing it since before Reasonable Doubt.

With that being said, the only brand of "hood" music that's winning is in the South. For as hard as we know Beans, Free, Styles P, and Jada are, it's a sad day when you know they're being outsold by (Insert Garbage Rapper here), when the difference in talent is obvious. This falls into a subcategory of Hip-Hop dieing. For all they talked about it, I don't see most of those Southern Rappers all over T.V. or the Net, but they're selling. I wasn't ever checking for PLIES, T-Pain, Rich Boy, DJ Khaled, DJ UNK, Webbie, Boosie, or Gucci Mane. But I hear them on the radio 20 times a day, because that's what people want to here. Not Jadakiss, Beans, Free, or even for that matter, Lupe, Little Brother, Common, Kidz in the Hall, Jean Grae, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Mos Def, etc.

The problem is the state of the Industry. No executive can change it unless they put variety into it. Not Jay-Z, Rick Rubin, Lyor Cohen, Dr. Dre, Russel Simmons, Jimmy Iovine, etc. Nobody. Period.

So redirect this BS criticism like you don't understand the game and how it goes.

Every major rap artist got crushed by Alicia Keys. I love Alicia Keys she makes GOOD MUSIC. She still sells CDs the traditional way. Why? That is because she simply makes good music. She appeals to a broad demographic base too, 13-25, 25-45. How many artists in any genre appeals to such a wide base? The recording industry stereotyped rap music and now the rap industry is suffering, but you have to keep in mind that plenty of label heads (the real big wigs at Universal, Sony, etc) HATE rap. Don't be misled by all the media hype. Those old white motherfuckers HATE RAP. But they love money more and as long as it sells they will pimp your black ass for an extra few dollars.

They never wanted to see it succeed in the first place and most of the people are falling into the trap by embracing the fads instead of preserving the essence of the platform. It's about more than record sales, Hip Hop didn't grow because of record sales, in the beginning there were no record sales.

I personally think the people just want to hear good fresh rap music. It doesn't matter if it's gangster rap, conscious rap, back pack rap, people want to buy a CD and feel like they are getting the artist, not an image or a marketing gimmick. Rap music has become so outlandish that it's to the point where supporters of the genre are like enough is enough.

The reason why record labels get the blame for an artist flopping is because most labels do not give their artists creative control. How many of these rappers are educated businessmen? See people get lost in the few dudes like Jay-Z that actually make it without formal knowledge of business, most rappers are slave sharecroppers and they sign shitty contracts.

If you think half these rappers have the final word on their project you're mistaken. The labels decide if they want to change songs at the last minute, titles, they even determine if they will clear any guest appearances. Most artists are slaves to the record label. So if you didn't go out and buy the latest Method Man CD, guess what, if some of you are old enough tell me why you went out and bought the first Tical in 94?

In 1994 Method Man had a huge push. Redman was a part of the Def Squad with Eric Sermon, they were getting pushed back then. Most fans don't think for themselves when they buy music, they simply believe they do because they don't to admit they are being led around by the puppet masters.

I have to agree that from a business perspective Dame was making sure people got marketed whereas I think Def jam just used Jay as a face. He was a puppet figure and he used his position to push his own sales after Kingdom Come was considered a flop. Cause word unheard the artists at Def Jam that had they CD's done, all of em' got pushed back to make room for Jay-Z releases. The rap game at Def Jam isn't messed up, it's just the core artists like RedMan, Meth, Nore, LL and Nas aren't getting marketing pushes when they get released. The budget is too fucked up for them to get marketing money so their CD's are just getting pushed to the streets with no marketing, but the artists who paid for their own marketing or who are presidents of their own situation did good, like Luda, Juelz Santana, hell Face is gonna eat for sure, and Nas will make some money just off his core fans but the publicity coming out of Def Jam is next to none unless your Rihanna, Neo, or Mariah Carey. But it's a balance to everything and cycles come back around. There is a time where people gonna wanna hear from members of Wu-Tang and need a Meth album, or a Redman album and of course as long as Nore is around he'll drop a gem with the Neptunes and Santana is good. The question is will they abandon Def Jam and get a new situation cause with Jay his new focus will himself and Rocafella.

I was having this same debate somewhere else about why I think Jay Z was bad as president of Def Jam. Basically I said:

Read any interview from LL, Dmx, Redman, Method Man, or Joe Budden about how Jay Z focused all the promotion money and efforts on himself and those artists who could benefit him or Beyonce's career. Joe Budden's first album sold the same amount as Jay Z's 'American Gangster' (both are certified gold) but Jay Z is 10 albums deep!!! Jay Z's 'Reasonable Doubt' (his first album) only recently went platinum after the concert Jay Z did which was basically like a re-release of the album.

Throw Kanye West on the beats, Ne-yo writing a couple of crossover hits featuring Beyonce, a guest appearance by Jay Z and couple other hot artists and do you not think Joe Budden would have went platinum plus on his second album?

Truth be told:

Jay-Z was the spokesperson for Def Jam the past three years. He was just wearing a Presidents uniform. I won't say Jay is a bad business man because his bank accounts say differently, but that does not make him automatically suitable to run a major label either. Let's just hope Sony does not make the same mistake as Def Jam did thinking this marketing ploy will work. Instead they need to study their own industry and see that the most sucessful projects come from artist that are real. And when I say real, I mean real people. some artists ARE JUST NOT BUSSINESS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!! they are pure artists. Kanye and 50, alog with Jeezy seem to be the type of artists who have a sense on how to market there music. these guys don't need the direction of a label, cause they already have a sense on how to market there stuff. other guys don't have that sense and trust these labels to do the right thing by them. that's what these artists are complaining about, that even if they would have had a sensible budget and marketing plan they might have still flopped, but they didn't even get THAT chance. we all complain when we feel we didn't get the opportunity we deserved. and we all know Joe Budden deserved anothe shot at it. We all know Redman, Method Man earned the shot at making more hit records but most of them feel that Jay-Z "the artist" was making the bussiness decisions, when it should have been Jay-Z "the president" who should have been making them. I honestly feel he left cause he wasn't gonna get the money he wanted. but that's just my opinion. anybody on here who said that Jay-Z is not a good bussiness man is a complete idiot and must have realized what Shawn Carter has accomplished. It's just that he's out for himself, and that rubs alot of people the wrong way. And in order to be that successful, you have to step on some toes. Because when it comes to money, nice guys USUALLY finish last. It's the ones that are willing to make some enemies that succeed.

You don't know what you are talking about. What promotion did Jay use????? First and foremost, in order for him to use the title American Gangster, big money has to be paid to the movie studio that owns that right, second, his album had commercial spots on PRIM TIME TV!!! Just those two instances alone probably cost more than Freeway and Bean's promotions budget combined. Not to mention the expensive ass videos made for Kingdom Come. I know Dale Jr. and Danica Patrick don't come cheap. Also the partnership he had with budweiser for the commercial spots for Kingdom Come. Meanwhile, what kind of buzz did you hear for the Freeway and Beans album outside of allhiphop.com. I work in times square and right outside of the virgin store there was a 50ft high billboard for american gangster. Only other rap acts to have that giant billboard this year that i remember was Kanye and 50.

I don't know if anyone has said this... but talking about the Def Jam numbers before and after Jay-Z is narrow minded. Look AT ALL hip-hop record sales in that time frame. He brought on two acts that he knew would do big numbers. Hip Hop isn't selling like it was accross the board. It's ignorant to think that Jay Z is the sole reason that record sales were down at Def Jam. ALSO, LL is a fuckin piece of garbage... It's easy for him under 50 cents approval to take shots at someone because he's not getting the support needed to go platnum or whatever his beef was. This acting ass nigga wants to sell some gang bangin records... I'd have trouble picking an LL album or a Will Smith album... at least Will Smith can act!

Now I know that Luda was disapointed, but again, ALL RECORD SALES ARE DOWN! Where would Def Jam be without Ne-yo? Without Rhiana? FUCKIN BUSTED right now! In this atmosphere of lack luster sales you can't be droppin the same old shit... Cuz what happens when you do? YOU GET LUDA NUMBERS (On his last release)! Def Jam is home to two different kinds of artists... The first ones are the staples in the game. Redman, Meth, Nas, The Roots, Ghostface... Then you got the people that came in under Jay. Rick Ross (THE RINGTONE DON) Ne-yo, Rhiana... Take the sales of those three and Jay Z and then take the sales of the others... The Def Jam Newbies gotta have them doubled over!

Bottom line. It's easy to point the finger when the fans decided that your album is full of the same shit the last album you released was laced with. The game is changing and I hope these cats saved there loot, because you can't keep blaming the president, whomever he is!

Maybe it's something about being from the south, but I never hear rappers from the south blame poor album sales on their label not marketing or pushing them...

When Slim Thug didn't do numbers on his first major label joint, he didn't blame Pharrell or the label, he said it was his fault and that his sound and raps weren't on point!

When Chamillionaires' label wouldn't pay for another video, he came to H-town and got all city together and made The Texas Takeover - (Won't Let You Down) to MAKE the label wanna push his music some more AND he been living on the road touring to still promote and put it down... that's marketing!

When RichBoy's label wouldn't fund a video for Let's Get this Paper, he did his own video and took it to streets and with this being his first album you can't say he was caked up from making beats or something, he just used his advance money and touring checks wisely.

Like someone already said, who on here doesn't know that the Freeway, Beans, Meth & Redman album aren't in stores right now... but the reality of the matter is you aren't buying those records because you know/feel it ain't gone bang so you ain't gambling on it and spend a hot $15 bones... you would rather burn it on limeware or listen to a few of the tracks in the media section and call it a day!

Do you think Mr. Collipark blew up Soulja Boy.... Hell-2-da-Nawww! Dude been on YouTube and MySpace grinding for the last 2-3 years! That was his marketing push! The music game has changed totally as many have already stated, most artists aren't suffering from the buying public not knowing about them, they are suffering because the people who are buying albums and ringtones want to Crank It, Lean wit' It or 2-step! The only other cats doing numbers are putting out really good music that is classic or near classic, period!

My suggestion is that rappers like Beans, Free etc better sell most of their jewelry and expensive whips and invest that dough in some apartment buildings and a few chain stores and/or restaurants and use their fame to enhance their investment portfolios... if you are smart you use the rap game as leverage to get into more profitable and lucrative businesses like Jay & Fiddy, not be a lifetime rapper like LL (no disrespect LL - but you should own a label or management company of something by now!)
