I'm a life long PE fan and always will be, but one thing I know is that New York is in desperate need of a youth movement. It is starting to happen with acts like Lil' Mama and Papoose, but not on a large scale yet. It's hard to knock down old lions, especially when they are the richest ones in the game.

I don't think that Chuck would be a good President because I believe that he would try to control the music too much. I would hire him on as a Chief Technical Officer.

I didn't hear him mention the music. First of all, you have to have a hot record or you have nothing. That should have been number one. Chuck D hasn't had a hit record in years. Jay Z album with no promotion is about to go platinum. Honestly, I did Chuck but he doesn't have the success rate to be president. Jay Z sold clothes, albums, liquor, clubs and now hotels. Chuck D is no where near his level. Sorry Chuck, I wouldn't vote you in.

what people dont get is that, Chuck D has all of the qualities of somebody that IS qualified to run def jam...1) his group has a 20 plus year run in the game and still dropping CDs.chuck released a PE album on the internet in 1999, before it even hit stores. he's got the history as well as the forward thinking mind. the issue is he's never really had the machine. i dont think he wll get it...the game is incestuious. they will prob give it to JD who was just dissing iTunes on the internet a few weeks ago. or Irv gotti. Sure, J goes platinum on his own in a snap, but how many artists under his umbrella did the same? *eh*

Chuck D knows about touring overseas, marketing without huge budgets etc... he could teach some of these artists how to get their songs played somewhere else besides NYC radio.

I'm sure all those laid off Def Jam employees would have voted in someone who is budget conscious and who will make artists responsible for their own success in addition to what the staff does.

what does the status of a PE album have to do with anything - they are a 20-years in the game crew? What was the last def jam rapper to go plat young caine? think of the WHOLE ROSTER...we're looking at jay and kanye. now..how many of them dropped CDs this year? and last year? Now how many tanked - not just sales either...straight tanked. This isnt about PE's recent sales, that would certainly dead IRv Gotti's chances of getting the job. I'd vote Chuck D in for presidency of Def Jam for six reasons.

1. He cares about the integrity and longevity of hip hop music and will not sell it out just to get a "pop" hit.

2. He is a forward thinker not afraid to speak his mind. Chuck D used to be cool, still is cool and always will be cool. (People love you one minute and hate you the next.)

3. He understands that great performances ultimately give artists the fanbase and longevity that they can use for financial gain.

4. He put in work for Def Jam and deserves a shot. If they don't like him, they can fire em!

5. Chuck D is coming in trying to maximize shareholder value. Shareholders don't care about a hot record! They only care about the price of their stock. As a stockholder, I want somebody who is thinking about my interest and is trying to give me a better return on my money.

6. If not Chuck D, who? As a Def Jam supporter, from the beginning, this will seriously influence the way I think about the label.

Worse come to worse, I like what DSheezy said about letting LL get the position.

It's about time that more of our artists get into these positions. Afterall they built the culture.

Everybody you got on that list with the exception of Irv Gotti, Questlove and Polo the don would cause that label to fold for sure. Your list alone shows your newjack status. It ain't about how old you are or how many records you've sold. It's about having the understanding of running the business and having the experience to do so. I don't hate on the new school but half these muhfukkas the reason why the industry is folding right now and ya'll to stupid to see it. Chuck D is on point about delevoping artist instead and making them work they ass off to connect with the fans. All these hot for one song and make it a ringtone rappers make me sick. I'm not even a huge PE fan, but I know em, bought a couple albums, and I have respect for Chuck D. He's been one of the most groundbreaking Hip Hoppers in history. I think he knows what he's talking about and what he's doing. He's talking about spending less money and making more money, helping develop artists and their stage performance, leaving criminals out of the roster... sounds good to me. He's a pretty well-spoken, intelligent and experienced guy, so I think platinum or no platinum, he could do the job, at least decently. People talk about Jay like he's a god. Look, I'm a big Jay fan, but the fact of the matter is, he has such a high profile himself and has been in control of so many ventures that maybe he just didn't have the damn time and focus to really make Def Jam all it could be. I think Chuck being president would be a good look, and I don't think he would take creative control too much. He didn't speak on that in his plan outline or commentary. I'm sure he wouldn't promote just a bunch of ignorant, talentless bullshit, but he has to be smart enough to understand that this is still a business, and a big one no less. I'm just worried that his revolutionary persona and anti-radio and commercial stances in the past will hurt his chances.

Chuck D is very intelligent, but he is too idealistic to run Def Jam under the umbrella of UMG/Vivendi. They would never allow someone with his political views towards the music industry to head up as President. If they did they would severely restrict his movements. As far as developing talent, good luck with that. Labels don't develop talent anymore, they just don't want to hone the skills of rappers in that way.

They make far more money moving them through the industry assembly line because even though they are taking losses now they figure they will rebound because they will capitalize on an artist or label that comes along with good music, and a strong marketing plan that simply lacks the finances and venues to push through. It is an opportunity for some, but a graveyard for most. Like everything else in life, one man's misfortune is another man's opportunity.

When your money is long you can simply wait it out until better opportunities arrive. It's the reason why nobody on the block ever shoots crap with the nigga that runs the block. He will drop 50 grand on the ground right there to the hot hand cats. But you won't be able to walk away until he gets it all because he knows he will just go to the stash and keep shooting until you lose money. You can't quit because cats will bust your shit. That is how they always bounce back.

Man Chuck D would handle business for real if he got that job cause he's challenge the artist's to quit puttin out bulshit and step they game up. The man is intelligent as hell and truth be told Chuck D is a music historian. He knows music and has watched the game evolve. I think Chuck should get the job. Even though he is an older cat, he's not a hater. Like he said, he's from an era where people spent 50k to make a million dollars. Some rappers may not want that because they like those advances of 800k or better. But at the same time, that advance has to be paid back whether you sell one or one million copies. Plus he will get the respect as an elder statesman from everyone in the building, or at least he should be, plus think about when some artist brings a song to him like Walk It Out, or Lean Wit It Rock wit It, he'd probably tell them to save that for their show and come with some real shit for the radio and internet. And he's been ahead of his time as far as marketing his name and his group over the internet before iTunes was even thought of. What's the difference between him and JD? If JD becomes Pres, we'll see even more R&B out of Def Jam for one, secondly, they'll probably be one or two more kid solo or group acts. Chuck is Hip-Hop and he would make sure that cats come correct. But I still think major labels suck anyway. Good luck though Homey. I'll be rooting for you personally, but fuck the machine. Unless u can fix it.

That comment Chuck made was not for the record sales of the artist. (50k budget nets 6 or seven figures) It was meant for the label. It was because of those artists getting screwed, that the new artists like Papoose can get a 1.5 million dollar deal. That's why these labels got so fat.

Why would Chuck D even WANNA be president of a mainstream hip-hop label? Chuck D is anti-drug, anti-gang, anti-ignorance... In other words, Chuck D is opposed to everything that mainstream hip-hop stands for. He's too intellegent for the typical Soulja Boy fan.

Sorry folks, but the key question is who can spearhead a youth movement in East Coast hip-hop? That's what Def Jam represents. I opened my list (see up the page) to southerners, 30 something emcees with good hearts, and young hungry lions who I felt have the vision to keep DJ afloat. Nearly all of them have or are currently running labels, most of them have never had Def Jam's resources at their disposal.

The bottom line is the bottom line. Unfortunately for hip-hop, the bottom line now lies with white America, therefore large labels like Def Jam face the dilemma of appeasing White America or folding.

So, unless you're Koch, Rawkus, or another indie lable, then major's like DJ will need to compete and Chuck's revolutionary ways will never permeate the WEA system. Personally, I miss the golden age. I miss the days of "Here it is...BAM...and ya say goddamn...this is a dope jam." But let's be realistic and let's redefine the term called dope. No, I'm not suggesting that purist give up. I'm suggesting that we not turn into old fogies who criticize our children's music in the same manner every generation does. Make no mistake about it, hip-hop is youth music and it is meant to stay that way.

Rest assured old timers, as with all musical forms, the nostalgia bug does kick in. The success of the Hip-Hop Honors on VH1 is evident that it is beginning in hip-hop. And no, I'm not a new jack. I'm 35 years old and I know more about hip hop than you blackchyldborn1st. All that I'm saying is that if you want to listen to Gang Starr, then throw in "Hard to Earn" and remember it for what it was, when it was. That was then, this is now.

man i know this is a long shot but if Chuck D was president of Def Jam, maybe the focus would be put back into artist development and grooming emcees to have more than a two album career in the game...this man has put 20 years into hip-hop and was going platinum when the standard back then was a gold record...respect what he has done and continues to do...yeah JD and Irv might be better at bring that quick money back to def jam, but i'm riding with Chuck as far as longevity is concerned...

yeah you need good music, but if the machine behind the artist sucks then what's the point?...your grind becomes useless...
