Media stereotypes of black men as more violence-prone, and media’s disproportionate focus on black crime (which is confused with the personas that rappers adopt), contribute to biased treatment of rap. The double standard applied to rap music makes it easier to sell the idea that “gangsta rap” is “more” misogynist, racist, violent and just plain dangerous than other music.

For example, an Orlando Sentinel article (2/26/92) managed to refer to the Geto Boy’s second album We Can’t Be Stopped as having “some horribly violent and misogynist imagery,” while in the same article Guns N’ Roses’ Use Your Illusion is called “merely obnoxious on songs like ‘Back Off Bitch’ in which Axl Rose declares war on women. Why is a “bitch” reference made by a black “gangsta rapper” considered more offensive than one made by a white “bad boy” rocker?

This softer treatment of white rock/ pop stars by the same media that constantly flog rappers as irresponsible (Newsweek referred to rap as “sociopathic entertainment”—11/29/93) has existed since hip-hop became a popular phenomenon. Perhaps the apex was the 1990 controversy surrounding rap group Public Enemy, which was charged in nearly every major media outlet with being anti-Semitic, based on statements made by a group member who was later fired from the band.

During this same period of time, Guns N’ Roses’ lead singer Axl Rose made several homophobic, sexist and racist comments on his records and in a Rolling Stone interview. His album at the time had a song called “One in a Million” which attacked “niggers” and “immigrants and faggots,” who “Start some mini-Iran or spread some fucking disease.” Yet the Public Enemy controversy received much more prominent coverage: References to Guns N’ Roses often seemed to be included as after-thoughts in coverage of charges of anti-Semitism by Public Enemy.

Hmm. Someone said something about banning alcohol, up here. Point well taken. Governments won't do that, though, and that actually has a mind altering, physical affect on people...but, at the same time, a person is still held responsible for their actions.

I'll say this - Yes, music can alter how u feel about things, like many things in ur life but as it has been said time and time again, it's up to the individual to be responsible for their actions.
Just cause a muh-cuffa says, for example, "Tear da club up!!" in the most emotional amount of screaming, the person in the club, hearing SHOULD understand that is something that should be taken literally.
Yet, at the same time, it's pretty amazing how much music can affect who we actually are. Think about how much whatever u may listen to, in this case, I would think, on this blog, it would be rap, has impacted how u perceive things in life. From the way u may tilt ur hat to the side with that doo-rag under it, to how u may feel about someone who actually DOESN'T dress in the same manner, think that they are "corny" or whatever.
Or someone who speaks proper english as opposed to speaking slang terms. We have these little bits of residue of our music, or, maybe even more of the root, our environments.
I remember a time when all this hard shit was NOT in such a strong existence. Most cats over here on the East coast were on a more peaceful tip based on the hiphop that affected us at that time. Yea, there was minor violence in lyrics but that did not dictate songs like it does, now.
Just thought I'd give more incite on the overall BUT I definitely do not agree with this proposed ban. It's very hypocritical and unjust.

If u actually have read the media or live in England u know there are rarely huge scraps in the football stadiums. They'll b usually a few and those people would b arrested. The football hooliganism ur on about and the riots take place outside the matchs and r often between different firms, so u cant blame a music for it or else they would probably try and ban it too.

But tht doesnt help this problem, i dont have a clue y they r trying to blame 'gangsta rap' for an alcohol influenced attack. Fuck em! It is ignorant to believe that music was the sole reason for the attack.
