Ok we’ve all heard the endless screaming that “it’s not hip hop’s fault”, hip hop is being blamed for society’s ills, blah blah blah. Just because hip hop is not the root of all evil (which this study clearly acknowledged) does not mean that the industry and its players are not responsible for their actions. If you feel moved to hip hop apologetics, please at least think a little instead of spewing venomous defensive nonsense at the few people in this world who dare to give Black women a voice and some humanity. Birth of a Nation did not start racism, so do you therefore not criticize it? Do you not talk about the effects that it had on White moviegoers? After all, if entertainment does nothing but entertain, who cares how Blacks are portrayed? Or is it that you cannot stomach the dehumanization of Black men, but when it comes to women you will defend portraying them in the same manner that slaveholders might, no matter how intelligent the critique? I simply think that some forms of rap music (not Hip Hop as a culture) contain explicit lyrics not all of it. These studies focus on the mainstream themes of gangster rap and urban pop that use explicit sexual themes and raunchy lyrics. They are not analyzing the culture as a whole, they are analyzing a portion of it from the perspective of profit and popularity.

Old school Blues and R&B as well as contemporary R&B contain misogyny and various sadistic themes but they were just more poetic about it. They called them "love songs", but when you really listen to the lyrics they were often describing adultery and various other sordid encounters that real people engage in everyday. It's not what you say it's how you say it. ;-)

You guys have to read the article to understand exactly what it's saying. It's saying that hip-hop is NOT the cause of sexism, but that it is part of it. It makes sense; all rappers (mainstream that is) talk about is money, women and cars. And when they talk about women, 9 times out of 10, it's not a positive message. We as men don't notice it as much because it doesn't target us. That's all the article is saying.
