First: the numbers are skewed because there's more hip-hop songs in that top 279. For the numbers to be truly representative they need the same amount of songs for each genre.

Second: hip-hop does not promote teen smoking, cigarette ads with fine *ss broads in bikinis (that are placed at low heights so they're more visible to kids) does.

Third: the Pittsburgh School of Medicine ought to be ashamed for puttin sum bullsh*t like this out in the first place. They sound as stupid as the guy who created Eugenics (look it up if u don't kno).

Notice the wording "Over 75% of the most popular Hip-Hop songs of 2005" that doesn't represent all Hip Hop just the songs the corporations are pushing. First off, that's a correlation study. A correlation study doesn't examine cause and effect; it doesn't examine WHY. It just examines WHAT IS. There's a high frequency of this, and this. No reasoning to it whatsoever. I'm a psychology major, and we had to study experimentation and research and all this stuff, and plenty of people always fuck these things up. Shows their lack of intelligence and professionalism. Was Hip Hop responsible for all the weed smoking and LSD and acid trips in the 60s? Hmm... oh yeah, IT DIDN'T EXIST. I'm not saying scapegoat rap music all the time but some of these artists have to take responsibility. If they were to conduct a study of the influences Rock and Roll and Pop has on kids they'd find it would most likely encourage homosexuality, suicide ideation, anararchism, satanism, atheism etc.

Seeing my pops and granmomma and grandaddy smoke made me wonder about smoking. I actually tried it when I was old enough to be away from home for more than six hours (middle school). After that point I could have listened to a rap album dedicated to smoking and I wouldn't try it again. Can't say that would be the case for all kids but most kids begin smoking after seeing someone closer to them smoke like their parents, close relatives, older peers etc.

I do think most teens try smoking weed after hearing and seeing it so much in rap. I still can't believe there are some folks out there who still believe that rap culture has ZERO affect on the youth and in the Black community. Keep thinking that way and re-analyze your perspective if you're still here in fifteen years when all the little thugs, thugettes and hoochies become adults and begin raising kids of their own.

I dont know, man....

I look at all my peers 30/30+ and Im hearing a lot of shit about katz having strokes, dying of heart attacks, liver fucked up, and other shit. Madd niggas is too young to be fucked up so soon.

I would definitely say Hip Hop smoothed the edge that certain drugs and alcohol had/has. Im trying to slow my roll some, before some doctor has bad news for me. Shit is real[with or without Joey-lol]
