I just read a REALLY GREAT quote in an interview with old XXL editor Scoop Jackson. Peep it:

The depth of subject and subject matter is gone. What great stories are left to tell? Back in the day Harry Allen did a story on Eric B. and Rakim for Spin where Rakim talked about how it took him four days to create the lyrics of ''I Ain't No Joke''. Who's going to tell that story now? Soulja Boy? Cheo Hodari Coker did a story on Kool G. Rap once for Rap Pages where he lyrically broke down his classic line about fashion from ''It's A Demo.'' So at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself what are we really writing about here. Even musically, I mean, some of these producers are nice, but they are creating beats as opposed to tracks and songs. Listen to Lil' Wayne's ''Lollipop'' and then go listen to a song like ''King of the Beats'' by Mantroni'. Just listen to the difference in the intricacies of them musically, then I think you'll know what I'm talking about.

Wassup slim? :-) I think we need to do a better job at preserving the genre. I make my music from the heart and I have songs that are extremely lyrical and all people talk about is how tight my beats are. lmao Some of the more wordplay style joints I don't even release. I have a joint called Poetry of War, some vicious shit. I might throw it back out there one day.

You have to strike a balance between creativity and actually being able to reach people these days as well. I have firmly considered the fact that the current generation is not as intrigued by the world play as those of us born in the early 80s and late 70s. At 8 years old I could recite Paid In Full by heart.

Nowadays all they care about is the beat. I am old school so I make my production tight and craft my lyrics to fit the subject matter, my hooks carry the thesis of the songs. But shit, does anybody really care about all of that? I do, but all they care about is how tight my beats are. So I actually slide my lyrics pass them, shit flies right over there heads, but they love the beats. lmao

There definitely has been a concerted effort by the entertainment industry to push quality Hip Hop music off the scene. They are certainly pushing ignorance over substance right now. I am not talking about backpack rap over gangster rap, I am talking about substance period. I've always felt like Cube brought substance with his Gangster shit. When you write a rhyme about the ills in your community, it can very well be about all the negativity you see or have been through, but what is lacking is the explanation behind it all. I incorporate everything into my music from my street experiences to my corporate experiences.

The Rap artists has become one dimensional, much like the black man was on the plantation. His life was so controlled that he had no frame of references outside of his slave experiences. He couldn't leave the plantation, he was not allowed to be a father to his family, he was adrift. That is the way the music is now, and all these dudes think they are so smart because they can sell 5 million more records than the next man. Especially when these slave cropping ass niggaz aint seeing most of the money from their record sales. Brittany Spears sold a lot of records too but her shit will never be as inspiring as Nina Simone.

That is why you hear some people say the East Coast has lazy beats.

Essentially the East Coast style of production is never to drown out the lyricist with too much bass. The boom bap was designed for lyricists to just flow in any style or cadence. So people actually was listening to what the lyricist was saying. Booty shaking club music, like Drum N Bass don't require that.

There is just a lot of disrespect because some people don't understand the difference in styles between regions. The south loves their Bass, the West Coast had rejuvenated the funk style with guitars and claps. Any real Hip Hop head should know and respect that especially if you claim to "make beats" like everybody does now.

I just hope this event isn't marked by some ignorant brothas shooting each other or fighting or some other dumb shit. You know there will be entourages, homies, females and erry brotha in the world who wants to be a rapper. Now you add a million dollar prize and then you have a recipie for trouble. Somebody gonna say they was dis respected by somebody else, and they trying to feed they kids, and blah blah blah, and then that's when the bullshit starts. they offerin 3 million in prizes for just males and females over 25. At $300 per registration they would need 11494 entrants just to cover the prize money for m/f over 25.... . If you look at the website you will notice there is no corporate sponsorship so there are no other revenue streams. .Also the rules say they can terminate the tournament at will Has it been confirmed by any of the judges or anything that this is infact going to happen?
