Y'all are acting like Nas has the enormous power to go against the corporate machine. He's just one man, who was fighting this alone. Nobody joined him or stood behind him. That is why this happened. He got no support on the matter. Instead everybody went against dude. It's not black and white nor is it that simple. Y'all are acting like he has cotrol over the government and censorship. No he doesn't. He was just trying to use his art form to send a message. But they shut him down before even got to get there. Point blank, the man was dammned if he did, dammned if he didn't. Y'all were mad because he did decide to come up with the title. Now you're mad because he got shut down behind it. You fans didn't stand behind him, his Hip Hop peers didn't stand behind him, and because of that. The powers that be shut him down. Again one man can't do none of this alone. So he was bound to fall or be stopped.

re: Rev. Spelling it backwards would defeat the point. Obviously Rev. Al and the is other chick haven't listened tot he first few songs from the album. His brought the issue of the use of the word to more light now than they have in the 50+ years of the Civil Rights movement. They want to still keep its use quiet, so white people will forever call us niggas behind our backs.

Secondly, Richard Prior pioneered this movement way back in the 70s (do your history) with his epic comedy album "That nigger crazy." Guess what, it is still the highest selling comedy album of all time. Where was Rev. Al back then with his boycott bullshit?

re: Rev. His last album had an attention-grabbing, discussion-sparking title, too.

**********************************************

That's right...I've lost ALL respect! They say fans are fickle, and I guess that's true to some extent. But there again...I was a Nas fan EVEN when he dropped Nastradamus which was clearly a subpar album! So....I could be a fan after that but not a fan after this? Look at the scenarios though. Again, why would I co-sign some stupid shit like wearing a nigger t-shirt and dropping a single that was (to his favor) onpoint lyrically but never summarized a point???

I actually like the War is Necessary joint...it's bananas...but I just don't look at Nas the same anymore. Whether they admit it or not...Malcolm X, MLK, Huey Newton, etc were our leaders back then and today's leaders are cats like Nas (if he chooses to make a political statement or project). Because these are the people we see the most...they have that limelight and its important how they represent us. I don't care what anyone says...you don't step on the red carpet wearing a t-shirt that says "Nigger." And you damn sure don't co-sign a white man who says the word "nigger" in a derogatory way. You can give him a pass if you want, but you don't co-sign it by saying he's your "nigger wigger cracker friend." That's retarded.

re: Rev. Nas wants and needs to bring attention to the fact that the word nigger or nigga is a very real problem in our society, with the fact that we as black people call each other nigga and the white that some whites call us that behind our back and in our face indirectly. Rev. Al Sharpton wants the word to die and not be use at all, because of the Civil Right movement that he and many others in his age bracket had to endure and fight not to be disrespected and belittled and for us to have that same right.
I think Nas is super talented and one of the best in the game at making a point and staying the course with it, but this time he would have had to delay the album for a very long time, because of all the red tape and toes that where going to get stepped on by the title of the album. Now could you see someone going to best buy and asking where the album Nigga was to a white employee and have them repeat it to you. That brings up to many issues to name.
I support Nas in making a produce that is eye opening and opens the table for a mature decision on the issue and I support Rev. Al Sharpton on saying hold up a minute that is not what I fought for you guys.
re: Rev. And I never co-sign a white man saying nigger, read some of my comments where I got on a few of these cats infiltratin AHH w/ racist comments than many never caught or just didn't respond to. I just don't think Nas has gone Britney on us yet, I still think there's a method to his madness, I guess we'll hafta wait on the album to drop. I'm not drawing any conclusions yet.

********************************************

I know, Miss Lady. I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth or anything. I was just generally speaking. You actually made a good point about "not being quick to write someone off based on one project." And to answer your question, it was more of "he-should'nt-wear-that-anywhere-at-any-time thing?" I think we as a people have come far enough to where "one person doesn't speak for all." So, Nas wearing that T-Shirt doesn't reflect anything on me. There again, I may have reacted differently had I had actually been there on the red carpet...I may have felt embarassed. Overall, I guess I expect more from Nas than what he's been doing lately. Regardless, dude isn't my top ten anymore. I just feel very strongly about my people and the topic he was / is trying to address.

But on a positive note: I think its really cool that the three of us (it_was_written included) were able to have a good discussion without resorting to senseless name calling and flat out bashing each other's opinions. I think both of you presented some good points. Take care.

re: Rev. I majored African-American studies, man, I tripped off of what I learned about slavery and the civil rights era, just when I thought I knew what it was all about. I don't agree w/ him on jumping on the bandwagon, especially if he didn't even reach out to Nas, but I understand the point u just made. I saw a DVD the other day about Palm Beach, Florida w/ so much Niggerdom, I wanted to pull a God and flood that spot w/ water and start over again. But'cha kno, just incase there's a gem in there somewhere, I'mma hold off, lol. I'm just sayin, I heard a cat on there talkin bout "Nigga, this how we do it out here, nigga, we'll shit down ya throat and piss on ya mammie." That shit made me really wonder if MLK is REALLY askin the question they portrayed him to ask on that episode of Boondocks when he came back: "Is this what I got all them ass-whoopings for?"

re: Rev. It seems that everytime a generation y black american attempts to address an issue head on, our good ole generation x decides to try and stop the effort. We have not been the same since MLK was killed and now you have all of the activists from that generation continue to try and hold back the new generation of activists. it seems more of a fear issue than an issue of denegration. i agree with whiskey sour. We allow words and their meanings to define us without even questioning as to why. It seems so much easier to protest. I admit not all the music and subjects in today's music is necessary, but i felt that this album would bring forth an open forum for honest discussion about various problems that plague us as young african americans. I don't think this decision was based off of Rev Sharpton but wouldn't surprise me if it had. And since when did Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson become the national representatives for black people, did i miss the election?

re: Rev. I'm sure there were some things said & done behind the scenes that we dont know about that helped influenced this decision. I wonder if Dick Gregory went thru this much grief when he dropped his version of "Nigger".

re: Rev. He thinks he knows every fuckin' thing about how black people should react and how we should view things like Nas's album title. Maybe he needs a slap across his freshly annointed and greasy ass forehead to understand that Nas was doing the right thing by politically shaking up things by putting one of the most common words that racists still hold dear to their hearts on blast. Big difference between "nigga" and "Nigger". Nas was actually gonna bring some knowledge to the table but now you got that ole house nigga Al' Sharpton trying to kick that willi bobo shit to the masses. He needs to get over himself and realize every race has being niggarized anyway. Hell I see white boys bumping gangsta ass music with straight street lyrics faster than black people do. Shit most black people call white people niggas too so they confused. But one nigga who isn't confused is Al Sharpton cause that nigga shows up anytime there's a chance to get seen or get money from everyone else.

re: Rev. But this is Nas, so it does make you think...he didn't THINK of a improvision? As opposed to just changing the title, he abandoned the whole campaign?! There's a deeper reason behind all of this, but we may never know. Why would he WANT this to seem like it was just a publicity stunt? I don't know, something irks me about the wholde situation. Either way, I'm still going to support...at the end of the day it's all about the music.

re: Rev. It was just a tactic to get some attention to a new cd release. Def Jam isn't going to let their share holders hurt because of one artist. They didn't mind him making those statements about the cd being released because they knew it wasn't going to happen anyway. Nas knew that too, he's been in the business for meaning years now.

But here's something that even more import, these so-called Black leaders are trying to grabbing just as much attention as artist are today. Anything to get people to talk about their organization in efforts to gain more members, money, and power.

Tye Banks co founder of http://www.WhoRyde.com

WhoRyde hip hop show hosted by Tye Banks
http://www.WhoRyde.podomatic.com

Tye Banks
http://www.TyeBanks.com

re: Rev.
