you know another thing, although I respect this dude b/c he's a reverend. he surely needs to realize that he has his way of changing the world for what he thinks is good and other's have their way. its all ultimately leading to the same good. Alternate methods doesn't always mean alternate results.

Him pressuring Nas and the record labels to desensitize the word Nigger is only empowering it. So the days of us beating the hell out of someone for derogatory use of a mere word, will definitely continue.

But there again...I was a Nas fan EVEN when he dropped Nastradamus which was clearly a subpar album! So....I could be a fan after that but not a fan after this? Look at the scenarios though. NAS was once my favorite emcee growing up also, but his recent attempts to gain attention for his upcoming album, not to be confused with encouraging dialog on the topic were outright silly. A certain element of respect and/or admiration are essential in the elements of a great MC (MC >>>> gangsta rapper or ringtone rappers). His intellect was a powerful motivator for me buying every album his has ever put out, but after this fiasco with "NIGGER"....I don't see myself supporting too many of his future projects.

Maybe it's me getting older and just wanting artists to utilize their influence on young and old audiences to be more positive with their music. Or I grow tired of him trying to kick knowledge then turn right around and tell a story on flipping coke.

I see both sides of the coin. Nas wants and needs to bring attention to the fact that the word nigger or nigga is a very real problem in our society, with the fact that we as black people call each other nigga and the white that some whites call us that behind our back and in our face indirectly. Rev. Al Sharpton wants the word to die and not be use at all, because of the Civil Right movement that he and many others in his age bracket had to endure and fight not to be disrespected and belittled and for us to have that same right.
I think Nas is super talented and one of the best in the game at making a point and staying the course with it, but this time he would have had to delay the album for a very long time, because of all the red tape and toes that where going to get stepped on by the title of the album. Now could you see someone going to best buy and asking where the album Nigga was to a white employee and have them repeat it to you. That brings up to many issues to name.
I support Nas in making a produce that is eye opening and opens the table for a mature decision on the issue and I support Rev. Al Sharpton on saying hold up a minute that is not what I fought for you guys.

I know, Miss Lady. I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth or anything. I was just generally speaking. You actually made a good point about "not being quick to write someone off based on one project." And to answer your question, it was more of "he-should'nt-wear-that-anywhere-at-any-time thing?" I think we as a people have come far enough to where "one person doesn't speak for all." So, Nas wearing that T-Shirt doesn't reflect anything on me. There again, I may have reacted differently had I had actually been there on the red carpet...I may have felt embarassed. Overall, I guess I expect more from Nas than what he's been doing lately. Regardless, dude isn't my top ten anymore. I just feel very strongly about my people and the topic he was / is trying to address.

But on a positive note: I think its really cool that the three of us (it_was_written included) were able to have a good discussion without resorting to senseless name calling and flat out bashing each other's opinions. I think both of you presented some good points. Take care.

I don't agree w/ him on jumping on the bandwagon, especially if he didn't even reach out to Nas, but I understand the point u just made. I was disappointed to hear that Nas had changed the title. It seems that everytime a generation y black american attempts to address an issue head on, our good ole generation x decides to try and stop the effort. We have not been the same since MLK was killed and now you have all of the activists from that generation continue to try and hold back the new generation of activists. it seems more of a fear issue than an issue of denegration. i agree with whiskey sour. We allow words and their meanings to define us without even questioning as to why. It seems so much easier to protest. I admit not all the music and subjects in today's music is necessary, but i felt that this album would bring forth an open forum for honest discussion about various problems that plague us as young african americans. I don't think this decision was based off of Rev Sharpton but wouldn't surprise me if it had. And since when did Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson become the national representatives for black people, did i miss the election?

He was just on the Suckerfree Countdown talking about "Nas is the type of artist that you can't pass judgement on until you hear the material and that he is sure that after the message is heard the title will be well-received" Now all of a sudden it was imperative to get the album title changed. But this is Nas, so it does make you think...he didn't THINK of a improvision? As opposed to just changing the title, he abandoned the whole campaign?! As I stated before Nas wasn't going to get that title pass by Def Jam. It was just a tactic to get some attention to a new cd release. Def Jam isn't going to let their share holders hurt because of one artist. They didn't mind him making those statements about the cd being released because they knew it wasn't going to happen anyway. Nas knew that too, he's been in the business for meaning years now.

But here's something that even more import, these so-called Black leaders are trying to grabbing just as much attention as artist are today. Anything to get people to talk about their organization in efforts to gain more members, money, and power.
