Jay-Z: American Gangster

9/10 There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Sean Corey Carter’s storied Rap career should be immortalized in Hip-Hop’s hall of fame.  The man effortlessly killed the game for eight straight years and “bowed out” as one of the greatest to touch the mic.  Jay-Z would eventually return from his much hyped hiatus—no one believed him—only to have his skills and motivation questioned with the lukewarm reception of Kingdom Come.  Now refocused, he returns with American Gangster (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam).  A conceptual piece based on specific scenes from the movie of the same name, the album is deceptively one of his best and most personal.

“Pray” sets the tone as Hov ties fragments from the film together with some of his buried early memories.  Sweeping violin arrangements and church choir like vocal injections back this unapologetic look into the inner struggles of a minor looking on from the outside of the street game. This is the dramatic flash of his life, in rhyme.  Additionally “No Hook” serves as the next chapter of the Carter chronicles as he lightly touches on the death of his pops and his view on hustling as his only choice to get his mother out of the hood.

Not forgetting to underscore the proper swag that accompanies a hustler’s bankroll, Young H.O. breaks out the mink and the good jewelry on “Party Life.” Diddy’s lead Hitmen, LV and Sean C., cook up a smoothed out soulful masterpiece as Hov spits some good game to his female companion during an implied lounge setting: “Art with no easel/Please there’s is no equal/Your boy is off the wall, these other ni**as is Tito.”

On a straight up Rap tip the first single “Blue Magic” is an ode to the old school with its simplistic flair.  The Neptunes track features knocking minimal synths and a basic drum pattern to compliment S. Dot’s sly 80’s flow.  The disc only packs a lean fourteen joints so features are rightfully trimmed down, some key appearances that clearly add to the album’s prowess.  Jay and Nas connect in classic fashion with “Success” over booming, rock flavored organs from No I.D and Jermaine Dupri. Additionally, Beanie Siegel adds his Philly touch to the reworked, Isley Brothers tipping lost gem “Ignorant Sh*t.”

Another true highlight of the album lies within its stunning production.  Sonically American Gangster is infused with a heavy soul feel provided by the aforementioned Hitmen and even DJ Toomp (“Say Hello”), which corresponds with the time period of the flick, but its sound never gets monotonous.  Vibrant horns drive the celebratory “Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)” and chopped up Marvin Gaye harmonies are implemented throughout the buttery “American Dreamin’.”

With the unbearable, Lil’ Wayne assisted “Hello Brooklyn 2.0,” which ruins the album’s pacing, as the only flagrant misstep, American Gangster remains triumphant.   There is no definitive radio smash hit present but that’s what keeps the project fresh.  Jay goes from running the block to cornering the market without forcing the issue, leaving no need to question his G file.

SOUNDCHECK:

Jay-Z "Fallin'"

Jay-Z f/ Beanie Sigel "Ignorant Sh*t"

Hello BK is FLAME!! Just the feel of that old 808 is crazy but yes, it doesn't fit the time period. That's more of an 80s sounding track, not 70s like the time period he is supposed to be going for. That joint 'I Know' joint feels out of place, too...

Aside from Hello BK, Say Hello, Party Life, American Dreamin', Success...Eh, too much to list - Most of the joints are hot on this CD. Classic. Great "comeback", Jay.

Hello Brooklyn is garbage. it really is, and jay-z is a sucker for thinking that he needed that. from what i heard he got rid of two really good songs that fit.  Even if this song was good it didn't fit with the rest of the album. weakness. And it really stopped this album from being the classic it wcould have been.  maybe he'll release american gangster 1.0 with dp3 and the couple other songs and remove hello brooklyn.

It's a good album.  very strong album.  i would say it's like BE, where it's a comfortable album that jay needed to get back on track after going too far left.

Oh, and if anyone misunderstands, Hello BK is more blazin' from a sound point of view with a GOOD STEREO SYSTEM, than anything else. Many of u may have not had the chance to pop it in one, just using computer speakers. Plus, I'm from the 70s so I came up with hiphop from da giddyup and Hello BK has a nostalgic 80s feel to it. The lyrics are Ok, and nothing compared to Jay on a few other tracks on there.

Now, this album is a straight classic. Had it for days. It has more of a good feel to it than Kingdom Come, to me, but I thought KC was a classic in it's own right from the standpoint of Jigga stepping into himself as to where he is now, not where he was before - Grown, bizness man. People didn't respect the direction on that album and, truth be told, just didn't get it cuz they can't identify with growing up. Maybe a few of the haters of that album will need a few more years before they can return to it and say, "Ahh, I get it, now"

This album is good. It is not a cross between Reasonable Doubt and the Black Album in my opinion, but it's good. I would have to agree with everyone that thinks this is better than everything out in the mainstream because it is, not that being better than these mainstream clowns is saying much. lol But it is something worthy of buying at least.

Yeah he could have left "weezy" asthma sounding ass off the joint but you know I guess since the kid done got drunk on stage and the magazines keep hyping his head up he had to put him on there.

Thank goodness Jay didn't give us another Kingdom Come. He killed me with that "it must have been too sophisticated" shit. Negro please, some of us are more educated than you are. Keep it tight Shawn.

Y'all are some straight d**kriders on here... especially the guy who wrote the review.  Yeah, I get it, its a Jay Z album.  Dude is a legend, no doubt.  But I remember when 'Kingdom Come' came out, everyone was d**kriding too.  Talking about the reason why the tracks didn't sound to good was because "we didn't understand" Jigga's new "grown-up" sound.  Really though, 'Kingdom Come' (with a couple of exceptions) was hot garbage.  No more wack songs with Coldplay... that ain't hiphop.

As for 'American Gangster', I ain't feeling this album and I know a lot of people who agree with me but are afraid to diss Jay Z.  I mean with Pac and Big dead and Eminem not really rapping no more and Dr. Dre pushing back 'Detox' again and Wu getting pushed back again... what else do we have?  Jay Z did 'Reasonable Doubt' so we can't criticize him right?  Plus he's paying mad payola to all these deejays to make sure they spin 'Blue Magic' (a weak Rakim ripoff) and 'Roc Boys' (a mediocre track that sounds eerily similar to 'Show Me What You Got' from Kingdom Come).

The 'American Gangster' album is alright, I guess.  I'm feeling that Jay / Nas 'Success' joint... credit due for that one.  But listen to 'American Gangster' front to back, take a break, and then listen to 'Reasonable Doubt' and tell me the two albums are even in the same stratosphere.

Hiphop has really gone down in the last 10 years if this album gets an almost perfect review from every rap site I've visited today.  This album ?!?  WTF?

The album was pretty pointless and stupid if you actually stop to think about it....i mean he saw some movie then comes out of nowhere saying he was "inspired by it" and it reminded him of his days when he used to slang like he was anything other then another middle-man on the corner and Frank Lucas wouldnt laugh if he heard this shit.

Once you let that register and marinate for a minute most of his rhymes over Diddy's generic beats come off corny as hell. He needed an excuse to go back to his "coke raps" after the response Kingdom Come so he acts like watching this movie was some major epiphany, spends 2 weeks in the studio, and behold we have another shitty collection of Jay-Z songs to go with everything else he's recorded since the Black Album.

I give the album 3/5 and this uninformed review from another gullable listener who thinks just because Jigga's rapping about crack again milking the same formula he has for years that automatically makes it a good album when it has no substance at all and you wouldnt even know the album is supposed to play out like a story if it werent for the song titles a generous 1/5

Co-sign.  You actually made the argument I was trying to make with more clarity and eloquence.

Why didn't Jay Z watch CNN and get "inspired" by what is going on with the Jena 6 or the increasingly f**ked up quagmire that is the war in Iraq?  The last time I checked, a lot of brothers were coming back from over there in bodybags.  Real talk.

Everyone was cheering when Kanye West outsold 50 Cent yet Jigga starts rapping about heroin and killing and y'all give him a free pass because it is a 'concept' album.  I'm not saying I want to hear Jigga transform into Jay ZRS-One and start preaching from the pulpit when he is not that type of rapper.  However, think of a track like "D-evils" off of 'Reasonable Doubt' where he kept it 'real' yet was still dropping science and food for thought. Where is a track like this on 'American Gangster'?

Being a fan of an artist, in particular, and hiphop, in general, means that sometimes you have to offer constructive criticism in order to change the game.  We didn't need Jay to 'dumb it down', we needed him to 'step it up'.

My thoughts... but you probably just want me to shut the hell up while you blindly throw up the Roc sign and not force our hiphop legends to do better...

Blk folks we need to get out of that "Era". Really messed up how Kingdom Come flew over folks heads because it wasn't hood..since when bein' hood was good? I give it 6/10.

^He's not talking about it as if it's something positive on the album, have you heard Fallin?  If not peep it, the album pretty much goes along with the movie.  The thing I like about Jay when it comes to this topic is that he never glorifies it, he discusses it yet shows the downside of it as well, something rappers like Jeezy dont do.

he's NOT talking about slangin like it's a positive thing...you need to listen to songs like "i know", "success", "fallin" and last verses of "say hello" and "ignorant shit"

the album is more of a concept album and not just due to the film connection...it actually have it's own storyline starting with the character struggling and trying to hustle just to make it...to midway thru the album he reaches the peak of his success and enjoying the fruits of that success...and towards the end where he hits with pitfalls and reach the eventual downfall...(which the last cut minus the bonus joints being "fallin")

it's truely a brilliant album

The most influential hiphop artist to me growing up was Public Enemy so get the f**k out of here with those questioning my ability to understand hiphop culture.  There was a time when you would a year a conscious track side by side with a party track side by side with a thug track on even mainstream radio stations.

What do we get today?  If it is not shake your ass in the club music, it is sell drugs in the trap music.  Where is the substance of a "Self Destruction" or a "Fight the Power"?

I DID hear the bootleg of 'American Gangser' front to back.  Name dropping a line about the Jena 6 or the Iraq War kind of defeats the purpose when the other 99 lines are about glorifying drug dealing and killing your own people to "get out of the hood".  Giving away free turkeys in your hood from money you made killing your people is something to look up to?

I guess Frank Lucas is a perfect inspiration for Jay Z.  Frank Lucas stepped over all his friends to make it to the top and when things got rough he ratted them all out in order to save himself.  Is there anybody left around Jay Z who was with him from day one?

I was born in 75 so buy the time i was 10 all i heard was curtis, marvin, the isley brothers, nile rodgers, barry white, earthwind and fire and so on but to hear this music in 2007  mixed with drum patterns and loops its crazy hands down this is the best production on a album this year. Its not to many albums that can give you a visual fealing of what the artist is trying to potray for example when FALLIN comes on the scene that comes to mind is when he went to the fight with the fur on, he knew he fucked up.SUCCESS reminds me of the scene when frank goes outside to give tango his 20% lol and the followings scenes after. Its crazy how they put this album together in a short period of time, its like he is playing a duel role on the album frank lucas /jay-z some lines deal with him and some with the movie its like if frank could spit this is what he would say.critics should not compare this to his other albums the only question should be asked is did he bring life threw this album?yes he did.The movie is more like a biopic so it sould not be compered to scarface or the goodfellas those were fictional characters the movie and album should stand alone as to equal classics

A Monumental MOMENT for HIP-HOP in '07!!

You know people say when is he going to stop? All he is doing is talking about the same thing. Well this album and concept is the answer to all that. Yeah it's about drugs and shit but that is one aspect of the movie. Who else watches a movie and do an whole album around it. I know it will be something that alot of artist will try, but will any one hit it on the nose like this one. Only time will tell.
As for SniperK, What else do you want from the dude. He has laid it down. Can you digg, if so then let it be dugg my nigga and let all that haten go. Been hitting up this site for a minute, but finally decided to join. How dope is it that my first post is on my favorite musician.

This album is second only to Reasonable Doubt. Plain and simple folks. I say that because Jay goes beyond the bullshit that these fools are talking about these days and brings you the real. The way that he describes things and puts in double and sometimes triple meanings behind his words is nothing short of genius.

The problem is most of these fools nowadays just don't have any hunger for conscious music. All you young cats want to sit there and either listen to a fool life 50 talk about killing someone every other song, and most of you ladies just want something to shake your ass to. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that.

Just like a good movie you have to have your action flick where sonmeone gets their shit pushed back. And just like a good movie you have to have something that makes you laugh and want to have a good time. But damnit Jay makes you think, especially with this new album.

Everyone is always talking about how Kanye and Common are conscious rappers, but its like Jay can't even get into that room when in fact homey is the landlord of the building. From songs like "Regrets" from reasonable doubt, "You Must Love Me" from vol 1, going all the way to "Beach Chair" from Kingdom Come and even "No Hooks" on American Gangster Jay gets as conscious as any strong minded thinking person can get.

He takes  it all to another level with "Ignorant Shit" though. Jay basically pulls his pants down and invites the world to kiss his black ass. I for one can't blame him!

Some of ya'll are over analyzing this album, the shit is just as hot as the film. you gotta let it be and stop tryin to go against the grain.
Truth is some of ya'll just dont want this album to be good and you find it easier to be critical.
Jay is straight, money wise, I dont think he's doing this for the fuck of it cause if he was he mighta put out an entire album full of hello brooklyns and blue magics, its a concept album, just accpet it and shut up...
wait till ya'll see the "roc boys" video if you havent already.
Jay is goin in! you gotta love it...nobody else is gonna go in right now and give us something to see....
I can appreciate it at least. at least he aint one of these lazy new niggas tossing money at the screen and calling it a day. and its like if jay is so weak and this album sucks then who's album is nice then?
Niggas kill me tryin to justify the lil wayne track...its the worst on the album face it....you might as well come on out and admit how your going about listening to your music nowadays cause it aint with an honest opinion or without bias.
niggas need to get out of hip hop with that pop mentality, thats NEVER EVER been hip hop...EVER...thats pop music shit, top 40...go over there with that shit is what I say...you know nothing but the trends and help fuck shit up....pause.

I see some cats talkin about jay/frank lucas glorifying the lifestyle etc. etc. the fact of the matter is when your black and in the dopegame on a largescale, and your dealing with the US in any fashion your a tool, a runner, a foot solider. period. and your gonna be the 1st to go. snitching comes with the territory...
The only organized crime syndicates that last in america are the italian mafia, free masons, the central bank of america, and the government itself...no black owned drug organization will EVER last untouched in america, it was never designed to be that way at all...shiiit we KNOW about the mafia but they still exist thats how fucked up its is in america!
The U.S. knew they were sending heroin back in caskets, they orchestrated the vietnam war to NEVER END in the 1st place to make money, the drug epidemic spiraled out of control so they had to acknowledge it. In that era, in AMERICAN HISTORY, its well documented and was referd to as the 'drug years'. THE DRUG YEARS. If herion wasnt coming in through San Fransisco and the west during those times it was coming in another way believe that...
This is bigger than franc lucas or a new jay album so if you wanna find the culprit and really speak out instead of coming out to front on jay for milking OUR establishment that WE run and bulit anyway you gotta dig alot deepeer than american gangster! Hip Hop is ours! the shit is only about 30yrs old now the youngest genre in the world...
All jay is speaking from is a time in HIS life...this is the life WE live in urban america, if it aint jay its tyrone who dont have an album deal, black america can relate to this shit, right or wrong, its OUR brothers cousins fathers etc going through it.... but THEY can capitolize off of us. Its our life and their profit.
To be successful in music we need to sell OUTSIDE of our own in the hood and cater to...whoever else that doesnt neccessarily relate but wants to listen anyway! They call us fuckin MINORITIES for cryin out loud! We are surrounded by idiocracy thats why its so hard to rationalize the basics sometimes. Its foul but look what america was founded on, look at the lies...look at the blood on its hands, what do expect us to do? how are we supposed to go about life? we all need to get a grip...

need truth?

it's called constuctive criticism...even though he cant cater to everone

but I cant lie Say this album is the shit...I dont go against the grain just to do it,

I mean its entertainment for Christ sake...

its cool to base your art on life, but never base your life on art..

thats a problem with hip hop sometimes...kids are basing their lives on entertainment...

Yall some idiots for hating on Hello Brooklyn 2.0. And i  cant help but think yall hatin' because either Lil Wayne or just a southern rapper period, is on the track.

Now, let me break it down for you idiots. If you follow the concept of the album, "Hello Brooklyn 2.0" is Jay returning to Brooklyn after returning from down south. Of course most New York drug dealers went down south in the 70's and 80's to get more work. So, Jay is coming back to NYC with some southern rap tunes (hence the heavy bass in the song) and a lil southern twang (and who's accent is more uniquely southern than Lil Wayne). SO ITS PART OF THE CONCEPT YOU FUCKIN' IDIOTS! Damn, i'm from the South and i picked up from that shyt. SMMFH
