Talib Kweli will never sound bitter to me. He is arguably the best lyricist in the game today. His first album was a classic and the last album was complete FIRE. I'll always enjoy his brand of hip hop no matter what. He's definitely better than any radio play garbage out there.

Talib Kweli’s journey has been a bumpy ride of acceptance, rejection and perseverance. The man has gone through serious label changes, pushed back albums and personal setbacks leading him to go the independent route. I first remember when the Black Star album first dropped. At the time, Mos Def was considered the saviour to the backpacker or conscious hip hop niche, sect or movement. He had the skills to win the attention of any true hip hop fan with any sense of this music being an artform. I remember a lot of cats didn’t view Talib to be on Mos Def’s level at the time and Talib’s role of that of a protégé. It’s amazing to see that in the 7+ years since the Black Star album, Mos Def has diversified his sound so much that a lot of those same fans question his relevance and Talib is actually on the come up! It’s been truly amazing to see this dude progress from his Reflection Eternal LP and first two solo efforts. He’s a well rounded emcee that embodies everything this culture has to offer. Truth be told, more people would love to hear artists such as Talib and I’ll definitely cop this album. The video is absolutely brilliant, I love the HP inspired take on conveying his entire song and message and the bonus Kanye produced track was fire as well. Cop the Graduation mixtape to hear Mr. West’s contribution. Big up to Blacksmith and let’s try and get a Strong Arm Steady album out ASAP. Those West Coast Cats are something serious. Big ups to Krondon too, I wouldn’t mess with that Albino anyday!

I've been anticipating Eardrum for a while now but from reading this review I kind of feel like its going to be a dissapointment, hopefully I'm wrong. I really really enjoyed Right About Now and I can tell that this album wont be in that realm of music. Maybe his label is the "hidden hand" making him release stuff like the material that prevented Quality and Beautiful struggle from being classics. I can tell this record will be in that vein.

I don't know about this review. Thornton sounds like he thinks the album's average, but he gave it 9.5 outta 10. That's pretty crazy man. 9.5/10? Sounds like it's gonna be ill, in addition to what all the other fans have been saying. Another thing, most Hip Hop fans DON'T want their favorite artists to just stay in their lane. It's important to step out of your comfort zone and be willing to experiment. I just don't like when some dudes pull like, a serious 180 and make a REALLY different CD outta nowhere. It's good to throw 'em a change up every once and then though, sprinkle it throughout the work.

Whomever wrote this review is a clown... This album is very well done. And 20 songs makes it worth the money spent, even if every joint is not a banga. Some of Talibs throw aways are better than 80% of todays hip POP artist... I will buy a CD for every Vehicle I drive..

I believe the reviewer came off differently than he meant to. The album was so good to him that he found it easier to write about what he did not like. Maybe he was chasing a deadline on getting the review in to the editing department or something. Who knows, but if you listen you will love this project. The songs he did not like are good joints. Some might say that Talib has skills to put out a classic album without hiding behind the production. On Eardrum it does not matter. Good album all the way around. On an ending note please get off Justins back. It is obvious he was heavily influenced by soul/R&B music growing up. So of course the music he makes will reflect that. Don't be a reverse racist please.

I too think this review could have been better. I hear out of 20 songs you will like at least 15; not bad at all. He's nasty, he's been nasty. I just hope the two songs with features that you know shouldnt be on here, don't affect the album that much. I have my $12.99 set aside for this one!!

Just peeped the complete album snippet. Heard every track not in entirety just like the first 1:30 seconds. Coming from a long time kweli fan this album must be copped. To hell with downloading. True hip hop fans need to put there money where there mouth is. I be hearing all of these so called real hip hop fans but when I see album sales we can't seem to get our favorite artist where he deserves to be. Lets do this right this time. Kweli does tons of shows. I ain't seen but one show in 10 years of being a fan and I don't even have to hear a single for me to cop anything kweli drops. I'm talking to the average hip hop head. I'm talking to all of the fans in attendance over the last few months and years that he's been touring. Go buy the album. Quit talking, quit downloading. If you a fan be a fan. It should be a hood rule that you shouldn't download artists that don't have as much commercial appeal as lets say a t.i or lil wayne. I'm pretty sure kweli got just as many fans as these cats. Kweli is more international than these dudes will ever be. So worldwide he has more fans. But unfortunately here in the United States we don't recognize real hip hop the way we should.Too much bling to much Ice. The Kwelity is lost. It's sad but true. Go buy the album. 8/21/07

hmmm, can't say i'm really feeling how the writer depicted this album...
obviously i haven't heard the whole joint, but that Country Cousins with UGK was tight in my opinion. and when did it become a crime to have an album 20 songs deep? shit, i wish MORE artist would give us lengthy albums as opposed to 10-12 cuts (minus intro, outro, and a skit or two)...
in short, i'm sure that this album will be hot, and if it is slept on (which Talib often is), he will still have my support.

I still believe that "Quality" was Talib's best work, but on his new cd, he is lyricly on point, on songs like "Holy moly", and "Say something" featuring Jean Grae, and "The perfect beat" with KRS-One, definitely a classic. Also a nice collabo with UGK on "Country cousins", Talib as a NY rapper acknowledging that the south is here to stay for a while, and UGK, at the same time giving props to some NY legends on the track.

Kweli turned in a solid album. It's much better than Beautiful Struggle, not that BS was bad, but it missed on some levels. Good or bad, Kweli's history as part of Blackstar and the Rawkus movement will always stay with him and some music fans can't let that go. He continues to show growth as an artist. I don't have a big problem with this review, except that it reads like it was written in 5 minutes (see the grammatical mistake in the first sentence). It also seems like the reviewer listen to snippets of each song and went for the easy analysis (see criticism of Country Cuzzins and Nature). Nature is a dope track, the message, the lyrics, everything. NY Weather Report, Hostile Gospel, Stay Around, and Eat To Live are some of my favorites.
