For the most part, everyone had something good to say about the album! I think it's like an Reasonable Doubt Volume 2~ That's just my opinion, some will agree and some won't!

Jay has forever changed the game in more than 1 way! Look where he came from and look where he is going! A lot of people tend to 4get that! I've been a fan of Jay's since he was rhyming fast! I was a bit young, but something about him just told me he was going to become more than the average! I was correct, much success to Jay and all that he has accomplished and will accomplished~ U did say youll be doing this til ur 40? I beg 2 differ, I think ull keep doing it til you have no more in you, if that's possible~

I like Hi Tek's comment about capturing a moment in time. How many complete albums have come out that's been able to capture a moment in time?? The only one I can think of off the top is The Chronic. But I dont' think that was a concept album, I think it just came out that way. But it captured everything that was going on at that time the whole Rodney King thing and the riots and just the whole feeling of that time.

JR Writer and Meth... No Comment... LOL!!! Beanie I'm shocked at, but he kept it 100, at least he didn't drop a "No Comment!"

I do think that AG is from the same vein as Reasonable Doubt! I'm not ready to give it a classic stamp yet, but I think it's from that line. 10 albums is a lot though and people gotta realize you can't stay the same, but I think around the Dynasty is when shit started to change for Jay where he became "commercial" and started doing less of the real street/hood joints.

WOW. Hip hop's memory is that short now? ANyway, i love the album. i have my favorites, but it works well as a cohesive piece of work that has that crummy song with lil wayne in it. that didnt fit, nor did Blue Magic. the album didnt hv a real single. roc boys was the closest thing.

So many of these dudes are tight lipped because they had no respect for Jay-Z in the mid-90s for real. Like I always say Reasonable Doubt was an okay album at the time. Tupac had every mainstream New York artist whose name he put in his rhymes shook at the time with the exception of Biggie.

Fast forward 10 years and all those NY rappers were completely at his mercy in 2006 when their careers were hanging by a thread and Jay could care less. That simply is ridiculous. Niggaz should spend less time clowning and put more time into their business.

Jay aint do no major movies or anything, he focused on his main cash cow, the music business, everything else revolved around the fame he got from the music business. A lot of those dudes were scattered brain trying to do everything but make music. I really think AG is a good album, I only think he should have named it something else because he didn't need to market it with it being named after one of the biggest movies of the year and that was the gimmick of it all. So he did have a gimmick behind it, of course he said he didn't. :-)

I didn't expect Meth, or Jr Writer to have anything good to say about it. It surprised me that they didn't say anything. It's real easy for people to hate/dislike Jay-Z. Because no one likes to see someone on top for so long. But honestly, what's up with all the hate for Kingdom Come, I admit there are 3 or 4 songs on KC that I don't mess with, but the rest of the album is tough.

American Gangster is a real iLL album. The beats weren't supposed to be real hard and shit like that cause it wasn't knockin like that back in those days, so the the music on there fit to me. I agree with iLLsEed when he says the only bump on there is Hello Brooklyn, I've listened to it a bunch of times, and lyrically it's on point, (Jay) and the beat sound good in a system, but there's just something about it that makes me skip over it a majority of time. Other than that and Blue Magic, the album is hot.

I think music has gotten so simplified and dumbed down over time, that people don't look to be surprised by their music anymore. Remember how many times you listened to Ready To Die when it came out?? Even two years later, you were still bumpin it. Same thing with The Chronic, 36 Chambers, and All Eyez, just to name a few. It seems as if these artists just want you to buy the album in the first week so they can make a few bucks and whatnot. I'm not against them getting money, but at least put out a product you can stand next to in 5 years and be proud of.

Sidenote - Joell Ortiz, please drop an album this year!!!! Whether it's on Aftermath or Not.

It's hard to judge music in the present. I have to actually play the music a year or two later to see if it's stood up to my standards. I have to be able to look at it like can I bump this forever and still feel it. It's hard to do an entire album that you can just play say in 2010. But that is my definition of classic. There are some classic Jay albums of course and this one may make it too. It will get more run than Kingdom Come though!

I am prepared to make a monumental statement some may say blasphemy but fuck it. "AG is better than Reasonable Doubt!" Yeah I said it and WHAT! From the beginning to the end this album was phenomenal. If you youngstas can stop shopping for Itunes singles for a minute. \

Rappers used to do release this things called albums and sometimes these "albums" were about a place is time in an artists life and instead of writing one song about that time they were creative enough to craft an entire series of songs about that time or place. Record companies never even considered signing you if you couldn't even do this. You didn't have to create a dance, you didn't have to get shot 29 times, and you didn't have to down with somebody's entourage.

With that being said, with this one line on "Pray"
"Hey young world, wanna hear a story, close your eyes and you can pretend you're me" That's what the fuck you should've done and let the album take you for a ride. Needless to say for me this AG is automatically in my top 10 of all time. Classic!!!!!

Yo on the real. Y'all know I don't speak on most shit in here but I really got to put my 2 piece and my biscuit in on this here.

I feel that this is a great album but not a classic album. Just like Kingdom Come. Kingdom Come was great but it would have been classic if you took like 2 tracks off of it. Here's my AG breakdown:

Flaw 1 - No 'Pain In The Azz' on the intro. I don't care how hot a Jay album is it doesn’t have 'Pain' on the intro it's not Classic, including Blueprint. Don't get me wrong Blueprint was an album with all classic songs but for me no 'Pain' made it very great album. Pain sets the tone for all Jay albums and he would have been great redoing a part from AG the movie.

Flaw 2 - The beat for American Dreamin' did not fit the song. Actually I think however produced that beat should be smacked in they mouth. There's mad other Marvin samples the producer could have pulled from. The obvious choice would have been Kanye doin a track using Cali Dreamin by the Mamas and the Papa.

Flaw 3 - Hello Brook. Why the fuck is Wayne rappin on this track. No hate to Wayne cause the boy is on fire. But, he's not from Brook. I know he did the song on his Carter album and it was a play offa that but the concept doesn't match up. At best here's what I think should have went down IMO. Jay, Bleek and Foxy w/ Wayne on the hook = all time classic shit. That would have been something to talk about. If this was "Reasonable Doubt 2" then it should have had Bleek on it and when’s the last time you heard Foxy rip it with a Jay/Galvin collabo written verse. I miss that Foxy... Plus I don’t even care for Bleek but I’m in his corner on this one.

Flaw 4 - 'No Hook' got boring beat wise real quick. I kept hearing another Jay track in my head when I heard this track. Once I figured out that it sounds like 'Breathe Easy' stripped down. That was it for me. The drum sequencing is the same. They could have dug deeper or not as deep, depending on the situation, beat wise.

Flaw 5 – Ignorant Shit should never have been released on the main tracklist, it should have been another bonus track right after Blue Magic. That shit came out like five years ago. That was a wack move by Jay right there. If he did it for the sake of adding it to his catalog and getting cream off of it then by all means do your things, but bonus track it. I know a lot of people felt the same I’m just not afraid to say it out loud. I would have taken Dead Pres III w/ Nas over that shit any day... *sings* DP3

Flaw 6 - The current intro would have been a sick ass outro. If placed right before 'Blue Magic' it would have been perfection.

All in all it was a great album that will forever get airplay from me. Jay's flow, wordplay and content were flawless as always. I bet the a cappella sounds way better (like how I felt about the Black Album a cappella). The concept was dizzope and the vibe was so sweeeeeeeeet… Plus placing Blue Magic at the end of the album was so so perfect. As you listen to the album a notice how the tracks were arranged and get to Blue Magic a t the end it’s like the summary of the whole damn album. After ‘Fallen’, which is like the end of the movie, Blue Magic is like that hot ass song that plays during the credits.

But I think a lot of people are too scared or too blind to say what they should/want to say. It’s about making great music and improving, even on past greatness and making the hottest shit you could ever make. When it comes to this album I don’t think it did that. Jay is my favorite Emcee, but I’m not to far gone that I can’t speak on his shit with a non-dick rider approach. Remember this is my opinion any ways so who really gives a fuck… Peace

I loved the album, I was hoping for a more of a "boom bap" sound but still, the album was real good. Lyrically this album smashes the Blueprint, but because I'm a young head, I'd rather the Blueprint because it sounds good.

Blue Magic aint whack, i thought it was whack the first few times but its good, anyone whos from ny might have heard the mix funkmaster flex did where he put the blue magic verses on krs one criminal minded beat..shit was crazy hot

It's his most cohesive album since The Blueprint without fault. Every single track served a purpose on the album whether it was heroin's ode to it's junkie or a man recognizing the pitfalls of his lifestyle it was covered masterfully IMO. It was refreshing to see Jay put out a concept album after all of these years since his debut which just happened to be his last one. Just showing those day one fans that he didn't forget about us even if he did lose us once or twice during the past decade.

Who are all these cats saying they haven't heard the whole album or they've only heard it once? How can you not have listened to this album yet? It's a great album. I'm not calling it a classic (and i'm sick of people that are calling it a classic) but it clearly has the potential to be a classic. But it can't be considered a classic until 2,5,10 years down the road when you still bump it like it just came out. That's when it can actually be called Classic.

It was cool to see random rappers give opinions and not those who we all know will have a bias opinion.....but that being said....the album isnt classic.....Its ranked in Jays top 5 or 4....but its not seeing TBA, RD, nor BP......

The album lacked real hot beats so i agreed wit 9th...i wished the album had better beats on some Blueprint shit....and i have to disagree wit Broddie about this being his most Cohesive album since Blueprint...IMO Black Album is takes that title...and i didnt like the way the album ended wit American Gangster...thought that track was average.....

Shinigami Rap I personally felt TBA felt short of cohesiveness due to the trash that was ironically produced by my favorite producer, DJ Quik. Justified My Thug was a waste I felt the same about Change Clothes. I also didn't like Moment of Clarity's production despite the realness Jigga spit over that beat I feel that way about Allure which is one of my favorite Jay songs cause of the lyrics. With BP I bump every track on there still including Jigga That Nigga I can't say the same about BP 2, TBA and KC. I don't know man it just didn't really cut it for me as a whole though to me it is a top 5 Jay-Z album along with RD, BP, AG and Vol. 1

I actually love that American Gangster track though it definitely does stand out from the rest of the album which is why it's a bonus track. It's more of a conventional type of Jay-Z cut. Like if this had been another album that probably would've been the lead single, it's an anthem. Truthfully the album really ends with Fallin' even though Blue Magic does fit within it's concept it's still a bonus track like American Gangster so I don't really view it as part of a whole.

I think anyone who doesn't like this album probably loves Soulja Boy's album or something. To say this isn't a great album is like admitting you are one of the biggest haterz in hip-hop. Is it Jay's best? NO. Is it better than KC? Hell yeah. Is it better than most of the garbage that is put out nowadays. You damn straight.

Hmmmm.....Gotta say I was somewhat surprised at the positive opinions of JAY-Z's industry peers. I'm a big fan of JAY's music as well as his business accomplishments, but even I wish either JAY could fall back or a non-JAY-Z associated emcee would usher in a new era of HIP-HOP excellence. He's overkill right now but the real shame is their isn't a single anticipated or established new emcee that could outshine JAY-Z's raw rap ability or lyrical enthusiasm? The best so called young rappers in the game today are mere JAY-Z copy cats or guess what they don't rap at all, or their rap abilities are severely average or below. This lack of talent and search for a real talented emcee in the music industry keeps JAY-Z relevant. Add to this that he has personafided so much of the well to do bragging from from emcee's that has gone on forever in HIP-HOP. Because JAY-Z and his successes have been so multifacited he has enormous shoes to fill and sad to say most of the up and coming emcee's only want to mimic the financial look of his or hers success. This I believe is also a sore spot for many of JAY's self proclaimed rivals. How did he get so wealthy is what they ask. The real question is, How does he stay so consistent?
The answer in my opion is JAY is and has always been an emcee and only 2nd to his business savy. Many of his living rivals are see their mistakes in JAY's success. American Gangster is hot because it shouldn't be. JAY-Z is rich and removed from the typical rap career grind. Everyone asked the same question? What makes JAY continue to spit hot verses and make hot songs. He's an emcee's emcee period and forever a student to his craft. JAY-Z is gonna stay hot and relevant until the up and coming emcee's learn or are taught this.

It's the same cycle over and over again, i think the beauty of Jay's career is he has grown as a person and style has changed. The problem is alot of his fans or casual fans have'nt grown with him, they are stuck in different phases of his life whether it's RD,BP,BA. Jay's fanbase is too damn diverse and everyone want's something different from him, the street niggas want WHERE IM FROM, bitches want CAN I GET A, the purist want SO GHETTO, and the conscious heads want CANT BE LIFE.

If you an 80's baby, then you can truly appreciate this album. Call it a soundtrack....call it a theme album....call it whatever. It's hot...and it's hot because it's soulful, it's raw, and it's Jay doing what he do best. Droppin' double entendra's, spitting hot versus, and giving you a multiple number of ill hits. Roc Boyz is an instant club classic...Pray is for every person out there doing something illegal in the streets, boardrooms, or wherever, just to get by...Ignorant Sh*t is from like 5 years ago, but listen to the versus. The man is literally telling you to stop following these rap cats unless they can prove they do everything they do. Hell, he even goes as far as to prove that the minute he drops something SERIOUS, people question his legacy, but then he drops a "Roc Boyz", and we claim he's back? He's telling US just how backwards we are as consumers....and he's right:)

At the end of the day, the album is on point. I can let it ride all the way through, and the only song I truly "question" is Blue Magic...I'm still so/so on it, but I can play it too...

Jay's the illest.......Still...And say whatever you want, but you can't front on him being the most consistent in Hip-Hop....EVER.

How can you call yourself an artist in the game and not have listened to this WHOLE album... that to me is an indictment on you not being ON TOP OF YOUR GAME and prolly why you can't sell water to people in hell! or sell albums in this day and age... Whether you like dude or not, if music is your job you gotta do tha' knowledge just to see what he running, after all he is THE MOST CAKED UP DUDE IN RAP, PERIOD! Secondly, the no comment dudes (ps. I love Wu & Tical Meth) but deep in their hearts they got salty feelings so I respect them keeping it on the low-low but we know they aint feelin' Jig...

Personally AG is a tight album, I too wished the beats were a little tighter (Kanye, Young Guru & Just Blaze IMO should have done at least 2 beats each) and call me a lame but like Swizzy, Roc Boys is da' coldest joint on there because you get the best of Jay... the swag, word-play, a murderous beat and a genius ad-lib (We in da' house!)

Also, shot out to dude who said Beach Chair from K Come was a jam, that's one of my personal faves off that album too.

Let's just face it, Willie Lynch schooled us as a people back in the gap on how to hate on our own and allow our differences to make us hate one another, so fast forward to today and we still doin it, as if his letter was read last week on 106 & Park... we hate our leaders, rappers & artists once they get to the top; as long as they struggling and are underdog getting stepped on by the MAN, we love they dirty drawers... but the minute they cake up and get Trump like papers we call 'em bustas', sell-outs or whateva (depending on your zip)....

Me personally I respect dude first and foremost for his overall swag & style as a person then an artist and most importantly as a "Bidness Man..."

I like the album a lot, but I would definitely put in behind Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. It was way better than Kingdom Come though. I will call it a great album but not a classic. I like the second 1/2 of the album better. My favorite joint on there is Say Hello To the Bad Guy, that joint bumps in the whip. Success is a banger, and Fallen is just plain ridiculous.

to call this album a classic is an insult to true classics. i think we throw the word "classic" around too much. the hip hop community is desperate for a legendary album to rise amomgst the garbage thats invading our speakers. i agree with 9th wonder:

"I wanted the beats to be better on American Gangster. I wanted it to be a situation where it was more fitting the era more".

he should've used the era's beats. to truly take you back too that time period and made it a true concept album instead of just another braggadocio dope game album. i think Hov just capitalized on the movie as free publicity. and alot of people fell for it. a decent album but in no way a classic. i actually think kingdom come was better. it was more introspective, more postitve and deeper (even for jay)

I love this album. I listen to it at least once a day. It is a beautiful project. My favorites are American Dreaming, Roc Boys, Party Life, Say Hello, Success, and American Gangster.

I did trip off a couple of the comments... Like, Mr. Collipark, "I didn't buy it..." Like that is something to be proud of, and all of the people who were like I haven't heard it, that was wack...

i dont get why people let the term "concept album" really brainwash them....i enjoyed the cd, but seriously, jay just keep using the term "concept album" to give him a free pass as a man in a powerful-prestigous position(pres. Def Jam) to make an album about drug references...All his past album accept maybe 2 or 3 were heavily laced with the same damn content of American Gangster(minus the 70's themed beats).....Concept my ass...roc boys aint got a damn thing to do with the movie, neither does hello brooklyn with wayne..there is no concept in that...again..just wanted to give himself a "marketing-society free pass"..*oh, im just making a concept album, the movie re-inspired me so hard!"

as with all his albums.... theres some tracks that are wack as hell but then theres some bangin tracks as well...

American Dreamin was d shit for me...right from when AHH uploaded a preview of the album on the media section...

Doesn't change d fact that Jay is the greatest rapper of all time... if not for anything, this nigga is spendin millions in africa improving lives.... how many rappers do that??

I think NORE hit that thang right on the head...if u'r a 80's baby then this is right up your alley 100%......this ain't no yung-boy music; they wouldn't get half the lyrics on the album...but it's grown enough to still make u move and nod your head to the beatz & rhymes. The concepts in this album are more mature than the 16-28 crowd might be ready for right now. I didn't buy it early on b/c i was still reeling from Kingdom Come along with all the crap in the music nowadays, but as an owner of all Jay's previous projects I gotta say this takes me back to Reasonable Doubt when I talk about prowess.!! The rest; GET WIT IT.!!!
