I smell a whole buncha hate in this review and the comments that followed it. While the number of the review is pretty accurate (7.5 - 8.0) the wording of the review seems like the reviewer has a lil bias toward Asher already. Im not even big on this dude yet, but I listened to his album and its not as bad as this review makes it seem.

Actually it was quite refreshing to hear something different then chains, cars, bling and bitches for once. It was refreshing to hear a new artist bringing something different to the table. Who gives a fuck who he sounds like, hes not intenationally emulating Eminem's voice.

Asher is here to stay, hate him or love him. I remember being the ONLY person who liked Eminem when Slim Shady came out, now hes one of the biggest rappers of all time. Stop all the fucking hate and start making better music and listening to better artists who are bringing something different then maybe Hip-Hop and the music industry might actually be a better place to call home.

As for the "Em should diss him" comments, I highly doubt that's gonna happen.
Asher himself already addressed the comparisons to Em on a track on the album titled "As I Em". As anyone who actually listens to the track would realize, Asher doesn't WANT to be compared to Em. It's not his choice. And I think Em would realize that.
If Asher was PURPOSELY going about trying to be compared to Em, I'd say yeah, diss him. But that's not the case.

I'll give you a comparison for all you college football fans.
The analysts and fans are comparing an incoming freshman here @ UF, Andre DeBose of Seminole High, to Percy Harvin in terms of playmaking ability. Dre HATES IT. He's said in 10+ interviews, "I'm NOT the next Percy! I'm the first Andre DeBose!" So does Percy hat him b/c Dre's being compared to him? Hell nah. They're still cool, at least it sure looked like it when the Dre was up here for a basketball game earlier this semester.

so i gotta give my tow cents on this album. 1st off this album IS a classic. he did pave his own path and is a breath of fresh air (despite what dipshit earlier commented). u cant change ur dialect. him and em are both from the northeast (somewhat) so i mean there accents are gonna be similar. but anyway... every song start to finish are good songs. with quite a few great ones. lark on my go kart, la di da, be by myself, sour patch kids, his dream. all are honestly great songs with classic verses if u listen 2 his flow and wordplay. actually listen people. and lions roar shows off a completely different (and epic) side of his spitting ability and has a classic busta verse. and i wont address the eminem comparison anymore. he puts that to rest completely on "as i em". so b4 any of u say anything about the album, go listen 2 it start 2 finish. it is a classic. i promise. the dude can spit and he shows it. he layed a good buliding block 4 a great career. love listening 2 it. congrats ash roth. keep it up. fuck the haters

I was pleasently surprised by his debut. It wasn't what I expected and damn, I was impressed. Some weak tracks in there, at least weak in my eyes, but I guess he's still playing around with styles. You know, trying to find his fit. And damn, his storytelling skills are up there! If that gets polished he might turn into a storytelling beast!

the album was good, not great. you have to think tho, as a first album it was smart marketing. I love college put him on the scene. Blunt cruisin is another laid back song for college kids. She don’t want to man could be a club hit. Lark on my go kart has a nice beat and is just a fun song not to be taken too seriously lyrically. Be By Myself and Lion’s roar show Ash can actually spit. Then comes the legit part. Asher has skills. Does this new album showcase those skills to the fullest. Not really. His the Greenhouse Effect goes harder than this album. To me anyway.
Now to the Em comparison. Don't see it Asher has a smoother flow than Em. Em punctuates his wordplay.
And last but not least to all these ignorant folks who criticize strictly becuz of his skin color. I guess in ur world there is room for only type of anything. Em is the only white rapper hip-hop needs. I should call Hollywood up and tell them to never put out another movie by Spike Lee, F. Gary Gray, or John Singleton. Tyler Perry can take all their places. Who needs Malcolm X when u can have Madea X right?

I like the album. It's something different and the boy got skills and a nice vocabulary too. Eminems stuff that I have heard so far just isn't jammin to me. Asher doesnt sound like eminem anyways, eminem raps with a silly puppet accent.

Lets all be honest here...he got skills but he does sound like Em PERIOD. He sounds like Em if Em went to college. He'll get his fan base from Em (12 year old suburbian kids) plus some of the college kids specifically from the song " I love college" and the fact the MTV has decided to back this kid. Nothing wrong with that.

Even when these vets (Busta, Beanie, Slick Rick, etc) jump on a track don't you realize its all about trying to get in on that fan base? At the end of the day it all about the money. They did it with Em and their doing it with Roth.

To think anything other than that your not being honest with yourself.

@ people who hate on Asher cause he is white and sounds like Em.. Yes, he kinda does.. but there are a lot of black artists that sound like other black artists so who gives a shit. Kid has good content and should get a bit a shine. In fact, he has about 4-5 songs that I thought were super nice on his album.. The album also has a certain vibe thru the whole thing which is a breath of fresh air.. AND thirdly, he is who he is and doesn't front... SOO, even if he is not the best, which he is not, he's still fresh.. at least in my book...

Anyway, to address AHH, there have been other white mainstream successes since EM.. Maybe not to the same caliber but Paul Wall and Bubba were both white.. There may be one or two more that i cant think of... And Bubba is dope as FUCK if you've ever listened to his albums in entirety. Oh, and I'M dope!! Lol

This CD is so cold. Beside 1 complete disaster (She Don't Want A Man...good song for 1 listen...after that UGH!). The live instrumentals on the album are amazing. Lark On My Go-Kart, As I Em, Sour Patch Kids, and La Di Da are lyrically impressive. Bad Day and Be By Myself combine comedy and potent wordsat the same time. His political outlook on almost every track is something that Hip Hop has missed over the years. I just hope people can move past his skin color and actually give dude his props. People on AHH have been hating on him since day 1...but no one can deny that this album was OK to say the very least.

It is ignorant statements such as this that justifies black angst toward white rappers. Despite the demographics of rock today, it is a music form that was created by BLACK people. Many of the early rock songs popularized by white artist were actually covers of songs originally created by black artist. It is this fact that creates a hysteria of white people "whitewashing" another of our creations (ie Rock, R &B) and reaping all of the financial rewards.

That being said, I would like to say that today's day and age requires that black people be cognizant of history, while remaining open to rap progressing to all corners of world. The difference today is that the information age leaves no doubt to the originators of this art form.

For the record I listen to music...not artist. Music depicts the soul of the creator and is not limited by boundaries such as skin color.

I think they forgot to mention that Ash sounds a bit like Em. LOL. Shouts to the man who threw out Joell and Technique in the comment. Those are two of the most under rated players in the game today. As far as Em and Ash goin head to head, I can't see it. Check out the song As I Em. Gives a good insight to his stance on the comparason between the two.
