The Murder Of Fred Hampton
Published Friday, August 31, 2007 2:47 PM
By Sidik Fofana
Almost everybody has an opinion on the Black Panthers. Some laud them as the revolutionary alternative to the sometimes passive peace movements of the 1960's. Others dismiss them as an overglorified street gang, predecessors to the Bloods and Crips. The Murder of Fred Hampton (Facets) DVD documentary chronicles the untimely death of the Black Panther party chairman, 21 year old Fred Hampton. According to the FBI, his passing was just another “accidental” death, self-defense from the FBI officials who raided his Chicago apartment. Yet, people of the Civil Rights Movement generally regard his death as murder by government officials who invaded Hampton's home before he could arm himself.

Black and white footage of Fred Hampton portrays the diversity of this outspoken iconoclast, The film shows Hampton the powerful orator and rabble rouser, but also Hampton the community organizer. Cameras follow the young leader to peaceful protests, breakfast programs for schoolchildren, and free medical clinics.

The climax of the documentary centers around Fred Hampton's impending trial for robbery and assault. He allegedly robbed a white ice cream truck driver, because he felt that the man was exploiting his neighborhood by selling to the poor children. In a humorous yet insightful juncture in the film, the Panther Party conducts a mock trial vindicating him. Unfortunately, Hampton is later convicted by the state of Illinois and sentenced to two to five years in prison.

The Murder of Fred Hampton
carries on the tradition of black orators during the Civil Rights Movement. It spotlights an unsung shining star who followed in the steps of great leaders like Malcolm X; a hero who is only martyrized by today's underground revolutionaries, and not by the general public. It's a shame that underground emcees haven't modeled their mode of communication after Hampton. Instead of just moving the crowd, emcees could be like Hampton and usher the crowd away from oppression.

This is a damn good article, I love learning about my "Culture". Just shows though the government can get anyone, but they keep a keen eye on African Americans who have power plus a movement behind them.

They didnt kill him because he was a black panther, they killed him cause he was a black man who had the attention of young black men.
To those rappers that are  "teaching"  stop being so scary...as much as he made you think, he was ready to pick up his gun...

Them brothers were way more mature back in the mid 60's to early 70's than brothers are today.  I just finished off David Hilliard's (BPP Chief of Staff) book, "This Side of Glory: The Story of the Black Panther Party" and he is up front about all that went down back then including Huey P. Newton becoming paranoid towards other panthers after he got out of prison because of the governments dirty tactics.  People started killing each other and the Black Guerilla Family (George Jackson/James Carr comrades) put a hit out on the BPP Central Committee because Huey started having BGF members killed who provided their soldier skills due to paranoia.  It's sad that an organization with so much charisma and love for the people deteriorated like it did.  Fred Hampton was an example of a black man who sincerely was the peoples champ.  All we have today is cowards (not all of us) masquerading as black men.  The government was smart about putting cocaine into the black community during BPP's demise--they knew a lot the members would succumb to the drug either through distribution or by using it.

That's a deep comment above brother.  Just about all the 18-21 yrs old I know don't give a damn about our history, present or future.  I wish some of us who are sorry a$$ people wouldn't conceive children so there would be less apolitical/nihilistic street thugs and materialistic hoochies fronting like they're women.

I would like to also give you props on your flows brother; I checked out your myspace page and liked what I was hearing; you definitely representing Kansas City the right way.

As we all know the schools will not teach of such revolutionary culture, they will only teach about MLK aka "The Safe Negro" Never Malcolm or the Black Panther Party For Self Defense. Even parents are not teaching their children about this history and that is really sad. Parents are depending on an already broken education system to teach their children when they can simply take some time to teach their children things that the schools will surely not teach like the real, good, bad, ugly and fucked up history of Afrikan people. We are still blinded by propaganda and bullshit because the white massa corporations are force feeding the black masses bullshit and we are eating it up like yummy yum. One nigga out of a crowd of 20 could tell you things about the Panthers while the rest wont know shit because of no interest in wanting to know shit. The first time I heard of Malcolm X was the movie with Denzel when I was a kid after that I had to get more information on him and other people, it snowballed and I found the panthers and other revolutionaries who were taking care of business for the community and how all of our revolutionary heroes fell from grace because of Hoovers and future Hoover-alikes Government involvement in their deaths.

These were "Black Leaders" whether you agreed with their tactics or not.
They weren't ambulance chasers looking for the next prime P.R. opportunity.
They stood for something and consistently stood by it for the sake of advancement.
The F.B.I. won't kill Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton because they understand that their puppets.
You kill those that may influence a people to "wake up" and react.
All of the leaders we've lost in the struggle were considered "dangerous" because they were courageous and willing to risk everything for the cause.
Malcolm, Martin, Marcus (deportation), Fred and Huey (goverment intrusion).
Bob (Marley) and Pac stood up in this music thing on the same level and intensity as the other true leaders and didn't live to see old age.
If you're a true "Gangster" you have to come hard against the systemic devaluing of young (hell, even older) black male existence.
It may get you killed or wiretapped, it may put you in situations where they dig in your past to undermine what you're doing but that's when you know that you're doing it.

It's cool to see One person give another props. I notice alot of times we easily attack, when we don't agree on a particular subject.

@Illseed Your not alone there on not knowing that he died so young. When I heard about Fred, I was under the impression that the man was atleast late 30's, if not older. That's Wisdom and charisma there. Most definetly a good article.

Black people are new to Wealth. Don't get me wrong. We were Kings and Queens, but that was forever ago, and we have touch with ourselves. We rock the Latest gears and stay up to date with the latest rims and such because that what we have been Brain washed to do. Not the white man. US. Black people. We need to really take responsibility for our on actions. Stop looking for excuses and go out there and get what you want.
Not saying whites have'nt oppressed us, but today we oppress ourselves. We keep "US" down. And it seems as if it is an hatibtual cycle. It gets worse and worse with ever generation.

But we can stop it. Know your worth.
50/Jay/Kanye/ I love them. But i'm not gonna go out my way and cop some 500 dollar jeans just because Jay had them on.
Peace people. White /Black/yellow/whatever & whoever.

If anyone ever has a constructive, word or 2, to make me a Better Man. Holla at me. I will always do the same.I ain't afraid to learn.

I love these brothers. They were all about showin and provin not showin and tellin. They were ready to shoot it out with police. Not just scream F the police on a record, then when they came around they knelt down in submission.

Ive seen this film a while back. Its vitally important for everyone to see the racially inclusive BPP for self defense. They were onto something and were a real threat.

Real Talk TYBOGGIE.

The whole problem is we have great black thinkers, that dont communicate with great black orrators, activists, enough.

Everyone has a role. Everyone needs to connect. We have big mouths that dont think, and Big brains that done talk.

Put 2+2 together and you have a revolution of evolution.

IF YOU GOT A DRUG PROBLEM IN YOUR HOOD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT REPORT THE TRAPS AND PEOPLE THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THE ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. GET THEM OFF THE STREET I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY BUT WHAT ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO DO. KEEP COMPLAINING ABOT IT (WELL WHEN THEY GET OUT OF JAIL THERE GOING TO COME BACK FOR ME ) QUIT BE SO FUCKING SCARY. @TYBOGGIE
Yeah, I have no problem disagreeing with anyone but I don't make personal attacks against those I disagree with; been a victim of attacks on a particular forum (BlackVoices) but majority of the people on their suffer from a serious case of intellectual retardation.  Also, me giving props is just showing love in a world filled with dirty looks, hate, jealousy and envy.

We need to really take responsibility for our own actions. Stop looking for excuses and go out there and get what you want.

@TYBOGGIE
I just had a deep converstation with a friend who I hadn't seen or spoken to in years.  I met this brother when he moved to my city from Compton,CA back in the mid 80's; he use to be an ignorant Piru banger back in the day.  This brother is almost finishing up his electrical engineering degree in present time.  He's concerned with the future of our people by the way these youngsters be acting up here in the Pacific NW.  He said we've been responsible for our own destruction for some years now and it's our responsibility to get out of this madness.  I agree with you about not blaming the white man for everything that goes wrong with us.  The nature of the white man will not change; it's up to us to change our ways.  It disturbs me that majority of us are not in tune with reading about history.  It's true that those who don't know the past definitely will not be prepared for the future.  Peace Out

@Yusef X
Right on point brother, I'm guilty of being a big brain that don't talk (LOL).  I have a serious case of introversion that I'm finally starting to eradicate from my system.  Another thing that's important is us as blacks need to put aside what divides us (region, religion, skin tones, class, money, organizations, etc) and come together as collective and tackle these problems we have within the black community.  I tried to get this across to Black Hebrew I befriended but he was too interested in getting my big brain into his sect when all I wanted to do was break down these barriers and connect with my folks regardless of what they believe in.  It's critical that we learn the mistakes of those who sacrificed so much for us in the past.
