Dizzee Rascal (nee Dylan Mills) is a name that most music fans on this side of the Atlantic may not immediately recognize. Dizzee burst onto the U.K. scene in 2003 with his debut album Boy In Da Corner; which was a head-spinning collection of post-apocalyptic Dance and Hip-Hop tunes that married Dizzee’s cockney-inflected wordplay. After another largely overlooked album, Showtime, Dizzee has released his latest project, Maths + English (Def Jux) through the cutting edge Def Jux American imprint.

Dizzee jacks the decibels on opener “Sirens” where he spits the chorus of “Run / When you hear the sirens coming!” in his trademark nasally English accent over a bombastic siren sample and frenetic backbeat. The track sounds like an old N.W.A. track that stepped into a time machine and ended up in 2020.

On “Where Da G’s” Dizzee teams with down south O.G.s Bun B and Pimp C (R.I.P.). The three MC's get their lean on over a metallic Dirty South creeper that has Dizzee calling out someone’s credibility, “Liar, liar / Pants on fire / You’re not gangsta / You’re not street!” UGK add muscle to the track with Bun B taking aim at fake thugs, “Big Bun B is back again / Talking that sh*t on the track again / Too many mutha****as be lying / ‘bout buying, selling, and trafficking!”

Dizzee goes old school on “Pussyole” over the classic Lyn Collins sample made famous by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s “It Takes Two.” He spits some venom at a rival Wiley and forewarns his foe of the style of violence he may dole out if provoked, “Blah / Don’t let me get old skool!” He rides a classic hip-hop beat and makes the track his own with his personal Cockney twist.

Dizzee enlists some other star power for tracks “Wannabe” where he receives an assist from British alterna-tart Lily Allen and famed drum and bass producer lays the foundation for the Rascal on “Da Feelin’.”

All in all, Maths + English is a solid introduction to Dizzee for the North American Hip-Hop heads unfamiliar with his previous work and it proves to be a worthy addition to the always interesting Def Jux roster. Looks like it’s time to put down that burger and fries and break out the tea and crumpets because British Rap looks to finally be for real.

Dizzy is dope and Wiley too.... unfortunately that thse two guys are beefing and it was especially sour on Wiley's behalf when he extended a peace treaty to Dizzy on a emotional track just weeks before and Dizzy came hard at him with Pussy Ole. I don't know if Dizzy was aware of that though..

Man I love the UK Grime Scene..sometimes it's hard to understand and most of them flow off beat ...BUT.....it's fresh man..there's a lot of heart in it...IT REMINDS ME OF H.E.R. when she first started.....

^^^^^^^ I like Dizzee but he is not the best out of the UK. We got loads of talent!!! Klashnekoff, Phi Life Cypher, Ty, Jehst, Plan B.... list goes on. Just havent had the backing they deserve. Most UK hip hop is underground.

The best rapper out of the UK right now is easily Example. Prefer him over Dizzee, they are different type of rappers though. I would definitely check him out!

Dizze is going the wrong way with his mrktg. Uk Grime is closely related to Detroit Techno and Baltimore Funk in beat structure/tempo. He should have attacked Detroit n Baltimore scene before anywhere else. and I mean heavy. Yeah Bun B is known but can't get him the buzz. Dizzee is attacking American main stream market but dudes always complain about not understanding the lyrics. Dizzee, build on your strengths not weaknesses. He should have been on a couple of Reggae tracks or done dub for sound systems already with 'Respect Me' and 'Inside Outside Blah Blah'. However, Dizzee things aligning himself to small movement as reggae soundsystems would not be good on his behalf. This is wrong thinking Dizzee, you would have been big in Ja, NYC and Japan from the first album. Dizzee go back to the basics; your ish would have been getting major forward/pull-up inna dancehall a long time ago. Dizzee, Maths + English cannot even compare to your last two albums.

Dizzee is the one mc that made me take notice of the then garage scene (now known as grime). There was the pay-as-you-go cartel, so-solid, and a whole host of other garbage mcs! From 97 to 03 it was all about 57th Dynasty, who opened the door for all followers by their independent DIY ethic, selling albums on road, getting a distribution deal off their street sales, 1st to produce major independent videos getting rinsed on MTV, tearing up stage shows... I remember when they rushed the Roots' set at Brixton Academy cause the promoter had them playing in the foyer as opposed to the main stage? Paradise stepped to Black Thought and just cut they set!!! Jay-Z even met them and walked away with his whole Dynasty concept (google it), them guys if they would have ever been signed... Oh my gosh. [see: Boro 6 Vol II, or Spoken Word Album]. Oh yeah, Estelle (American Boy), well they put her into the street, them public limelight by featuring her (as well as BlackTwang feat her on a single).

They made major labels look at the UK urban scene and the eventual signing of Dizzee and his crew (Roll Deep) which included Wiley are the end result of The 57th Dynasty legacy. I heard Roll Deep on Choice FM one night, and they were as weak as all the other garage crews of the time, but when Dizzee touched the mic... I knew the UK soundscape was in a changing transition for the better. Garage eventually eclipsed UK Hiphop and all the stars of the genre.

Dizzee is extremely talented, but the corps have tainted his sound from day dot. Not to critisize too much, cause if not for their beats and producer selections he would never even be mentioned on these pages. Its a thin line between commercial success and staying true to one's grass roots. Give his 1st album a listen, but remember the culture behind it, its British which has alot of West Indian influence... open your ear and minds. I co-sign the lickle rascal.

BRAP!
