Rock The Bells Festival Hits Toronto
Published Wednesday, July 23, 2008 10:00 AM
By Mark Bozzer

Toronto’s true Hip-Hop heads came out in droves to Arrow Hall on July 20th, where they were treated to an uneven, but largely enjoyable all day show. Earlier in the afternoon, the crowd was laced with short sets from Kidz In The Hall, Jay Electronica, Murs and The Pharcyde.

However, the vibe intensified when the heavy hitters of the bill began taking their turns rocking the heads in attendance. Mos Def turned out an energetic and lively set, touching largely on material from his latest album True Magic and Black On Both Sides. He sounded particularly crisp over “Unbelievable” and crowd favorite “Ms. Fat Booty”.

After a short break, the original microphone fiend Rakim took the stage to chorus of cheers as his DJ Kid Capri screamed at the crowd informing us that we were about to experience some “real f***ing Hip-Hop!”

Unfortunately, Rakim’s set was marred by sound problems. Kid Capri had a losing battle with the decks and he and Rakim had some choice words for the sound crew. Too bide time, Rakim dropped a nice a cappela freestyle which temporarily won the crowd over. He threatened to walk off stage at one point, but once Capri had the decks back under his control, he blew through the rest of his set with aggression, especially on the classic Eric B. and Rakim track “Paid In Full”.

Next up were Method Man and Redman. They took to the stage smoking you know what and tore through a hard rock version of their hit “Da Rockwilder”. They blew through their forty five minute set working the crowd into froth with the lighter-raising anthem “How High”.

After what seemed like an eternity, the pressure was finally released when Nas, walked on stage to the opening notes of “You Can’t Stop Us Now” off his latest disc Untitled. He launched into “N.*.*.*.*.*” and had the crowd in the palm of his hand from that moment on.

Backed by DJ Green Lantern, Nas moved with ease through some of his latest material (“Hero”, “Black President”) which ended up being overshadowed by his classics “Represent”, “If I Ruled The World” and “Hate Me Now”.

The reunited A Tribe Called Quest, were certainly going to have a tough act to follow after Nas’ memorable performance. Little did we know we’d only get to see A Tribe Called Tip? After a thirty minute plus wait, the restless and tired masses seemed puzzled when Q-Tip finally took the stage with Mos Def. The two were backed by a live band and ran through a set dedicated to the late J Dilla and some of Tip’s solo material.

Once Tip began dipping into the Tribe material minus the services of Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhommad, it was clear this wasn’t the Tribe that we had waited all day to see.

Fans began filing out of the now empty-looking venue wondering just what happened. If Phife and Ali were hiding out backstage, waiting to make their grand entrance, the thousands leaving never got to find out.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: A Tribe Called Quest did perform a thirty plus minute set after The Abstract did his solo big. Phife hit the stage with a surprising energy while Ali was his usual reserved self. The Tribe killed it. Sorry for the glaring ommision.]

I was at the first show they had in Chicago, and when I got there Murs was on...well, on stage at least. Nobody was really feelin' his set too much. Not really a great performer. Red & Meth tore that shit down! (as always) Rakim a.k.a. The god, was in great form and Kid Capri set his spot OFF. Didn't see De La Soul...(no disrespect, but didn't really care either.) Immortal Technique was out shutting down the system as usual, the people loved him. On some real, immediately after his set, he went out to his booth, and signed autographs for all the fans. Real dude. Mos Def came out and did his singing thing, and his, to me, was the worst set of that day. Was NOT feelin him, most of the females were though. Pharcyde came out and did they thing, had niggas DYIN laughing. Nas broke the stage down, and after he came out, we got the same thing...Q fuckin Tip. We left after two of his 'new' songs, never saw ATCQ. I had more fun last year, they were running like 30 to 40 minutes late, so EVERY act was just like, 'I'm done?'

I was at the show in Chicago too.  I wonder nobody posted the Chicago show on here but they went straight to Canada's???  Anyways... I agree with everything you said except for Murs's set.  Murs is a great performer, but his set got fucked up cause the turntable broke.  He had to do shit out of order and i know it had to frustrate him.  He was funny as hell though, lol.  Man, Mos Def's performance was bad for 2 reasons... 1, he came right after Meth and Red... 2, he didn't do the right songs.  B.O.B. set was worse though, but he ain't important.  I missed most of Kids in the hall, but from what I did see... they did they thing.   That shit did run late as hell too...lol.

Yea, you know what, you're right! He did say that, I came in at the middle of his joint, so I missed Kidz In The Hall. I almost forgot, they did Supernatural the WORST. But he showed that he is one of the illest, my mans kept the freestyle goin throughout ALL of that shit, he deserves props for that...couldn't have been me. Dead Prez did they thing too.

That had to be what it was for Mos. After all that fire them niggas laid, he came in more mellow than yellow. Haha, what's funny is that they went and said right before that that NOBODY puts on a show like them...and here came the la, la la, la la, la la's. lol.

Like I said, I only stayed for two of Q-Tips joints, did the Tribe come out in the Chi?

LMAO@ more mellow then yellow!  That was exactly how it was, you said it perfectly.  Supernat held that shit down.  I didn't see him give the blunt back to the guy in the audience either...lol.  Dead Prez was tight too.  Yeah, Tribe came out there.  Phife is short as hell, hahaha.  He was wearing a Rose shirt.  Their set was good, but I had to piss through the whole thing, so I didn't enjoy it as much.  Oh yeah, pharcyde was good too.  It was nice to see them back again.  Where did you sit?

Chicago popped off. Mos Def slowed shit down, but Pharcyde picked it up. Nas then proceeded to tear the place down, even though he didn't do The World is Yours during his 94 stuff. A Tribe Called Quest came on next. Q-Tip did a bunch of his new stuff and then they dipped off the stage.

This is where people failed to be patient. People started to leave thinking the show was over even though they didn't turn the lights on. I don't know why people are so impatient, but you could obviously tell they were changing the set. They had to take the live band off, but people took this as the end of the show.

After the live band was removed, Phife and Tip came back on stage and belted out I'd say a 30 minute performance. It was hot, but I still think Nas was the best that night.

I'm wondering if people got impatient in Canada too and left after they removed the live band. Sucks for those who didn't waitttttttt

Cool, I'm glad the Tribe slid thru, I know people were pissed in Canada, lol.

haha, when I first came in, I was in the back...with them damn LAWN tickets. I was there wit a couple of my dudes, and we didn't know we had GRASS seats. Came in that boy wit no towel, no chairs, noneadat! Not too cool to chill in the grass, but after Murs got off, that ish was dead. So, we peeped security blockin section 100, just lookin at the 200's, so we just slid in there. Left like 5 times, everytime we came back, there were more and more people...and less in the grass. You know it was rainin that day too. Wonder how the ticket sales were, because I saw they had people walking around the ticket upgrade.

Lol.

I got my tickets for free, but if I had paid for the 200 section I would have been mad as hell cause all the people who had lawn seats crept up.

I wasn't trying to hate on any artist's set, but Nas should have closed it out and mos def should have been replaced by another artist... maybe Little Brother!

If Mos had did the right songs (Fat Booty, or his verses on Definition or Respiration), AND got moved from his spot behind Meth and Red, it would of been better.  Although, Little brother would of did better at the time slot.  I'd love to see them perform too.

None that I saw. They have a free mixtape, (that I still gotta listen to), and a variety of T's. Nothing that really grabbed my doh. In the Chi, we had Burger King handed out $5 gift cards for spittin 16 (written or free) in their booth. I thought it was cool...and of course they didn't get rid of all of them, so me and my peoples ended up walkin out of there with like $40 worth of gift cards, which I thought was cool. The chick in the drive thru didn't find that shit too hot doh, lol. But yea, T's and mixtapes was pretty much all that was out there.

I can't believe how STUPID THIS REVIEW WAS.

I WAS AT THE SHOW IN T-DOT

ALL MEMBERS OF TRIBE WERE THERE, they performed after Q-Tip did a brief solo set (tribute to J Dilla) and performed some new shit.

On a side note, Rakim was FUCKING WACK! Yeah he had sound problems, but it pissed him off so he started performing half assed and cut down his set it was SO SHORT, he played for maybe 15 minutes.  And on top of all that he was like 2 hours late for the show.

MAN, I was at the Toronto show, and like the people above me said, this review was not very good. Mos Def didn't even perform "Ms. Fat Booty"...

As far as I remember, Q-Tip only performed "Breathe and Stop", "Vibrant Thing", 2 songs off his new album, and "Sucka Nigga". The reason why fans were leaving is not cause of Tip, but most of us had been standing in the massive crowd for about 10 hours without food or water. I couldn't even get into Tribe's set as much as I wanted to cause I was so exhausted.

And the Rakim thing was wack as hell. No disrespect to Ra, cause after Tribe he was the one I most wanted to see. But 2 hrs late, then the sound problems, and then he just left abruptly after like 5 verses.

On the postive side, Supernatural was an amazing MC, while Rakim was late and we were waiting he just freestyled for us for like 30 mins, he's a good host. And surprisingly, the best set of the day/night was BY FAR Redman and Methodman, I had no idea they were that good live. For people going to one of the upcoming dates, make sure you don't miss their set.
