I gotta homie that is 18 years old that is an MC. One day I was playing N.W.A niggaz for life. It got to about the 4th or 5th song and bro turned to me and said "That shit is dope, who is that?" whaow! Are you serious. I then put on Run Dmc's greatest hits. I got to about the 15th song; all the while I was asking who it was. He didn't know until it got to "king of Rock" and it said Run, Run, D m c. Whaow! I know this stuff was before his time but it's essential. We talking 2 of the greatest acts. With that being said that is why you will see a difference in a Rah Digga top 5 and a Cory Gunz. Young cats are gonna go with the current and obvious. Mercy Deville where you at!?

This list is one of the best. I was born in 84 but I do remember Kool G., Run DMC, & PE. I really do appreciate u puttin Redman on this list. I live in Columbus and I can remember me my peeps walkin 2 school knockin that Whut Thee Album joint and Muddy Waters heavy. I was a young'n back then. Also Im glad 2 c u at mention ppl like Uncle Face who most ppl feel like had albums that werent up 2 par but I beg 2 differ. It truely is hard 2 make a list of the top 5 MC's of all-time cause most ppl are bias neway so tryin 2 speak on it 2 sum ppl is just a lost cause. My generation neway doesnt think outside the box, dont get me wrong sum cats out here do but majority of the ppl out here in my generation would put Wayne in their type 5 DOA. It's sad because I remember how my brothers were when they listened 2 Rakim and NWA and PE and shit like that. Ill give u another rapper 4real that I think if it wasnt for his accident would have been on of the illest 2 ever do it. I know the West Coast knows who he is. D.O.C. I feel his 1st joint was a classic album hands down. I wont front I have 2 older brothers they were both born in the 70's so they are truely 80's babies. I always say 2 mom why did u wait so long 2 have me cause Im 9 yrs and 6 yrs younger than my bros. The reason I say that is because as far as the music part goes Im a disgraced 2 say I came up wit this generation. It seems like niggas 4got what being a true mc was. Everybody these days only care about how much bling or how many bricks a rapper say they move. Like I had a dude tell me Gucci Mane was better than Jay-Z & T.I. Its crazy cause it seems as though nowadays ppl cant be a fan of more than 1 rapper or if the rapper doesnt talk about movin bricks and bustin choppers then no1 is interested. Its sad 2 say but its so true. I just wish more ppl pay attention 2 this entry on the Top 5 saga and do their research and learn about the history of this genre of music. Its more deeper than just talkin about bitches drugs and ur jewerly game. I understand we have 2 accept change but all change isnt good. I had a conversation wit my homeboy who said Gucci was better than Jay. He said 2 me ur a fan of Jay and when u came out he was speakin on the same shit that Gucci was talkin about. That statement is true but the difference is Jay didnt glorify being a drug dealer he glorified the money. He also had something deep inside his rhymes so it wasnt just about the drugs. On Beach Chair he said best. "Ill prepare a blueprint 4 u 2 print a map 4 u 2 get back a guide 4 ur eyes so u wont lose scent I make it stink 4 u 2 think I ink these verses full of pros so u wont get conned out of 2 cent.

I don't think my list is the same as every other list. I've looked at the other lists. Mine definitely has some people. Nobody has put DMC, Chuck D or Redman on their top 5 that I remember. And.The fact is, this is my personal list. I'm not going to put the D.O.C. on there just to make somebody happy. And I say D.O.C., because he's one my favorites of all times off one album basically. the same applies to cats from down south. Bun B, Scarface, Killer Mike. In fact, i was just on the phone with killer mike and he gave me his top 5. that list will be different that anything you ever saw. Anyway, i stressed this list is based on the rappers that affected my personal life...that's just what it is.

Being that I'm 36 years young, I've seen the birth,the golden age, the BIGs, the PACs, Jays, Waynes, everything in between, and I still enjoy, DJ, produce, and support HIPHOP. I have to say this is the best list I've seen thus far. You know what? We've come a long way. We shouldn't even have a "TOP 5" list anymore. It should be more like 10-15. I wanna see a Top 5 HIPHOP DJ list...... really test some of the younger dudes.

This list is great. A different approach to the
whole building. Chuck D is the number one when
it comes to Lyrics that make sense.
He is our Malcolm X in rap.A brother who never
wasted time on the mic by polluting our airwaves
with trash and adverts. But also basically after
PE everything has already been said and done
leaving no space for others to top what PE did.
PE are just perfect, so they are out of competition.

Redman is a lyrical animal. I enjoyed anything this
guy did. Every freestyle was a killer. Every record
worth the money spent. We don't get something
like this anymore.

Jay is overrated. He was great, but when he
talked retirement, he should have just retired.
Everything that came out past his retirement
in my eyes was trash compared to stuff he did
before. The first 4 Albums were killers.
But he by far doesn't reaches biggies level or
the one of a young and hungry Wu-Tang Clan.
or even early Nas. Also the biggest difference
him and Rap's greatest BIG was that BIG
never had a bad song. There was no single track
Biggie did, that disappointed. Jay is far from that
plus he doesn't have the magic that other rappers
have, once the make the stage.

Cliche' right? well he has what every one of those rappers you just named on your list and an original style that cant readily be traced to anyone in particular.. LIke you said you can hear Big and Pun and see where they got their rhyme schemes or style from..But i say great list overall... and its very hard to just pluck 5 and say fuck the rest..

Awesome list!!! ANd just awesome coverage on why. So great to see G Rap and Chuck D (my personal fave...or maybe KRS lol) but just a breath of fresh air.

People sleep on Redman waaaayyyy too much and write him off but he is the embodiment of an Emcee. Off the top, written, story telling, battle, punchlines...and a great live show!

Much respect Jigsaw and the best list i've read so far...so in line with my top 5.

Also, not sure if anyone else felt this but when i was reading thost DMC bars...i couldnt help but hear Jay's 99 problems in there

Good choices especially for older heads that grew up with Run DMC and moved on to Public Enemy, certainly helped me become political (thanks Chuck) and Redmans Whut ? Thee Album is a killer from start to finish even now 17-18 years on (WOW HOW LONG ??)
I aint feelin Jay like that and I would have many others before him from Wu members to KRS to Rakim to Pun to Cube even Ice T for laying the Blueprint of what most rappers only dream of these days.

If someone from the West gets on here (they've already done that, haven't they?), I'll bet 3-4 of their fav's will probably be from the East too. It's not a knock on other locations...it's just people's preferences. They say TOP 5 based on mostly lyrical dexterity, I promise you.

If you said greatest producers, or greatest songs, or whatever, you might get some different perspectives. Long story short, it's not an "accident" that you keep seeing the same "usual suspects" per se....what do you expect???

I feel like we sell ourselves short trying to narrow down greatness we are apart of one of the greatest art forms if not the greatest and we belittle the music by saying a top 5. We can argue atleast 25 MC's or groups that can be mentioned in the same sentence with GREAT.

Its about ones opinion and I respect his opinion but I do find it funny that some eastcoast niggaz always complain about the same 5 then when someone goes outside the norm from ya area you hate his list and want to put the same niggaz in everybody top 5.

WOOOOWW!! Its about time someone put Kool G. Rap (your favorite rappers favorite rapper) on this list. The dude had the most consistant couplets ever. He created a style like no other before him. He soldified his spot when he bodied Kane(with all due respect) on The Symphony (MY VOICE IS TWICE AS HORRIFYING AS VINCENT PRICE!!!). It was so bad that he had to anchor The Symphony Part 2. Look it up. Classics like The Streets of NY, Truly Yours, Road to Riches and Ill Street Blues. Dudes albums can't match that one song!

AND you even put my all time favorite! CHUCK D!!! PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER 1!!! I said he was the best in '88...and dudes said I was buggin then. Chuck D had the voice...the lyrics, the energy...the dude is a monster. It Takes A Nation of Millions To Holds Us Back is probably the best hip hop album ever recorded. Chuck was the epitome of hardcore Rebel without a pause BUT with a cause. Say no more just listen to that album then listen to SHUT EM DOWN!!! SHUT 'EM SHUT 'EM DOWN!!!

MEAN LIST JIG WORD. AND WE ALL KNOW HOV IS THE BEST OUT WITHOUT QUESTION. THIS WAS A FIRE TOP 5.

It doesn't make any sense. Perfect example...when Jay-Z came back out of retirement with Kingdome Come i told my friend the album is just OK...its not his best work and its not a classic. I wasnt born or raised in NY...again...people seem to think that listing your personal top 5 means...you dont like anybody...or some reason...i know and love Hip-Hop from all over the world. I was listening to Derek B and the Wee Papa Girl in the 80s - google that. I the geto boys, NWA and Too Short...in the 80s. Hmmm...i also love philly hip-hop tuff crew, 3XDope, steady b, fresh prince, jazzy jeff, cool c, schoolly D, MC mechanism...Lady B. Guess you gotta be of a certain age and disposition to recognize Chuck D's impact on the game. I say it religiously- he is, bar none, the single greatest MC in history. I realize, nevertheless, that the majority of this site's visitors were either just being born, or weren't born yet when D is for Dangerous was doing his thang. Few youngsters care about history. The world is as old as they are in their eyes.

It's tough to come up with a list of the top 5. I can appreciate the fact Chuck and DMC got some love. Red is mad underappreciated as well. G Rap is a legend nuff said. As far as Jay, i'm not a fan. I just don't see how he's considered a top 5 "Lyricist". I will give him his just due for being a major figure in the game for such a long time, but top 5 Lyricist I just don't see it. I could name at least 20 MC's that are "Lyrically" better than Jay
