    CONDOLENCES OUT TO JOE BUDDEN

Last night the celebrity rap battle went off at SOB's…it wasn’t quite as planned though. Early yesterday, Joe Budden found out that his brother had been shot 8 times. This made the battle iffy as it was and everybody was wondering what was going to happen. Joe stated that he would do his best. His brother was alive, but in critical condition and that was No. 1 on everybody's mind. There was a lot on the line and Joe attempted to make it, but unfortunately he didn’t. There was his brother being in the condition he was in and the terrible traffic at the Holland Tunnel in NYC that ultimately prevented him from making it. Condolences to out to his brother and we want him to get back into good health. Joe, hold your head.

    THE BATTLE…

The battle. After Joe wasn’t able to make it, the AHH organizers had to make some difficult decisions. Both Royce (Detroit) and Mistah Fab (Oakland) were getting antsy, because everybody tried to wait for Joe. The crowd even started to shout, “Joe, Joe, Joe.” Fat Man Scoop was the boss for the night and he and Kulture of Hot 97 managed the situation on stage. As for the battle…let me know what you find on youtube. It was a very classic Hip-Hop moment. People as far as Delaware drove up to the joint.

    We’ll talk about that later.

On top of everything, the Hip-Hop police were totally there for no reason. The entire event was a PEACEFUL HIP-HOP EVENT with no violence at all YET they came in to let everybody know they were watching. No matter the winner, AHH wants to THANK Joe Budden, Mistah FAB and Royce Da 5’ 9” for being a part of the battle. You know what? Just about every rapper you THINK should have been in the battle wasn’t for whatever reason. These three men were in it for the love of HIP-HOP and we are eternally respectful of that. Rumor has it Remy Ma wanted to be in it, but there were outside forces stopping her.

    THE BREEDING GROUND!

Shout out to NORE, who hosted the Breeding Ground. Shout out to all the artists that performed that evening. MOP, Freeway…Even Remy Ma showed up and performed her hit joints. Chamillionaire was in the building. The AllHipHop staff “begged” Immortal Technique to come to the stage as people were waiting for Joe Budden. They were flatly turned down by the militant rapper, but Craig G was happy to oblige. On the real, I heard there were a lot of stars born in SOB’s last night.

    Here they are: WILLIE JOE// JAE ELLIS// JOELL ORTIZ// HEDONIS// WIZ KHALIFA// C-RIDE// B.O.B // DONNY GOINES!

    MORE ON JAY-Z’S NEXT ALBUM!

I think the frenzy is getting to a fever pitch! Rumor has is Jay-Z will be calling his next album Boss Hova. Now, from what I have been told that’s the name of the album for now, but he’s also considering several other names too. That’s the name of the month. Anyway, I’m not sure when Jay-Z plans to release it, but I am hearing some interesting things. I heard that Jay intends to adopt a more retro feel that will remind fans of the Golden Era of Roc-A-Fella. I heard that he’s got a song with Beanie Sigel and Bleek that is already finished. I don’t know how far he’s in, but fans can expect production from lil’ bro Kanye, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, and DJ Toomp (my fave producer of the moment). We know Jay didn’t leave, but I heard he’s coming back.

Oh yeah, Jay-Z references the “I Get Money” remix and states that there is no beef with him and 50 Cent. To Entertainment Weekly:

Jay-Z: I just wanted to show that we’re not enemies. It’s a great story for this, you’re the first person to ask, so you got great timing! [50 Cent] called me to ask for the remix, and I told him he couldn’t put the remix out until the first week came. I didn’t want it to affect any type of numbers. [Laughs] So as you see, it came out the 17th, when the SoundScan cycle is finished. So just to show, I’m still competing! We’re not enemies, we’re just competing.

SHOUT OUT TO KANYE – JOB WELL DONE.

After September 11, we knew there would be no losers, but we do have a winner in Kanye West. Kanye scored 930,000 units sold. 50 Cent raked in 660,000 and that is nothing to sneeze at, haters. The country dude came in No. 3 and he pushed a cool 400k. Nice job, guys! I think 50 is a lil’ tight about it, but he has no reason to be…THIS IS HIP-HOP…I mean, it’s a friendly competition.

    CAM ON TERRENCE & ROCSI?

I always pegged Cam’ron to be a “Rap City” kind of guy, but from what I am hearing, he is more of a “106 & Park” type of fellow. I heard that the purple and pink one will break his silence on the stage with Terrence J and Rocsi. From what I have been told, Cam’ron will talk about 50 Cent, whats going on with him, Jim Jones and Juelz. I’m not certain, but I heard that’s what it is. So, let me know of the links when it hits the internet. I heard this will air this week.

NO FIGHT WITH DIDDY AND ELEPHANT MAN

It would appear that some people are just into making up rumors. The rumor about Diddy and Elephant Man appears to be a big, fat hoax. According to sickhop.com, there was no fight at Bad Boy and Diddy didn’t get beat down at all. Very simple…it’s a lie. Here is what the “Energy God” had to say:

“Me and Bad Boy are ‘Good To Go’, me and Bad Boy is family, nothing like that happen[ed], when dealing with business you have to have manners. Bad Boy for life.”

    It never happened.

JAE HOOD WALKS HIS D-BLOCK CHAIN…

…And raps with 50 Cent. You see Hood in the back…

    THE JENA 6 UPDATE

The MAN is still f**king with Mychael Bell, one of the Jena 6 that had his case overturned by a judge. So, the DA/prosecutor has decided to try Bell in juvie court. What a racist piece of trash. He’s already served 10 months in a hardcore jail and they can’t even consider the time served.

    ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Scratch magazine is officially DEAD. Pour out a lil' water...or liquor.

Word has it, Michael Jackson is in New York for the cover of Italian Vogue, but they are saying that his hair alone took three hours to style. How long will make up take?

Marc Anthony…your wife is desperate to have kids. If you won’t impregnate J-Lo, I will…dream about it.

50 Cent deaded his European Tour…people are saying that he’s starting his retirement now.

I would love if the bloggers would leave Alicia Keys alone. She’s a beautiful person and her skin has nothing to do with anything.

Rumor has it OJ was set up. You saw how convenient that recording was? Yeah. Rumor says the Goldmans finally made it happen in a “sting.”

Below is a lil' diddy bop with Gnarls Barkey...artsy fartsy.

LETS GO BACK TO THE 70’S

    Rose Royce – “Wishing On A Star” – 1977

Lets ride out to this beautiful song!

    EARTH WIND & FIRE

I don’t know when this vid was made, but it seems like the 70’s!

SHALAMAR – “Night To Remember” (actually 1982, but close enough)

    Jody Watley was so dope.

    DON'T FORGET!

Go over there and vote for AllHipHop and that award they are going to be giving out at this years Hip-Hop Honors! I can't wait to take to the stage!

Oh, click here for info on the general Hip-Hop Honors stuff.

    ILL PIC!

Shout out to LL Cool J and Liris Crosse, who hosted the AHH Fashion show on Monday. Shout out to all the fashionistas and devos out there.

    TOMORROW, WE LOVE YOU!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

SMH @ what happened to Joe Budden's brother. I hope he recovers.

Congrats to Kanye, but to be honest, I'm surprised Kanye won. When I went to buy his album it was like 10 people in front of me with 50's album. Hopefully this will make 50 retire because I downloaded his album when it leaked to the internet and it is GARBAGE!!

Who cares about Cam'Ron, Elephant Man, or Diddy?

Is it me or does LL look a little gay in the pic??

Highlight of My Day...Jay-Z making another album!!!!!

    1. Damn sorry to hear about Budden's brother. Hope everything is everything for him.

    2. Jay taking it back to the "Golden Era" days. I'll believe it when I see it. Jay's not the same person he was back then. He's not hustling on the block anymore or toting gats. He said it himself on his last album so I wonder what this statement actually means. I'll ride with him regardless, though.

    3.  Kanye did the best numbers of his career first week. He gotta thank 50 for that. I think so many people wanted to see 50's ass lose that they helped Kanye win. Lol. Regardless... 600k in the first week.. is not shabby either. Total them together and that's a lot of dudes that came out their pockets AND ACTUALLY BOUGHT CDS. That in itself is good for hip hop. It shows that cats are still buying music.

    4. Cam finally left the pool and the palm trees behind, huh? After chilling in the lap of luxury, it will definitely be interesting to hear what Cam has to say on the whole situation. Depending on how greasy he gets, it could be the beginning of the end for Dipset because Jim and Juelz will be forced to respond. When exactly is he gonna be on 106?

    5. As far as Diddy's fight with Elephant Man, you can't believe everything you read on Mediatakeout.com

    6. J-Hood. I'm waiting for the full story to come out. They been real lo-pro with this. Lower profile than the whole Dipset thing at least. 50's snatching em all up, huh.

    7. Jena 6. Come on. You know they aren't gonna let them go that easy. When OJ was declared innocent during the first trial they found other ways to get at him. If they want you... they'll find a way to do it. I'm still amazed this whole shit is so low-profile. If it wasn't for the internet... most of us wouldn't even know about this shit...

    8. Damn. They killed Scratch. RIP.  For a few months now.. I've been planning a Scratch competitor... now is as good a time as any...

    9.  The 70's flashback is crazy. I have a lot of that music on vinyl (from my parents)

    Universal Music Group

The king of rap returns with Curtis

On the same day as Kanye West, another heavyweight in Universal Music Group’s stable of hip-hop artists let loose a new album: Curtis , in record stores on September 11, is 50 Cent’s third release on the Aftermath label. This new album of authentic, no-frills, uncompromising rap from 50 Cent (whose real name is Curtis Jackson) includes guest appearances by some of the biggest names in the business, from Eminem to Dr. Dre and Timbaland.

Curtis has already racked up sales of nearly 2 million in less than a week and appears on track to match the records set by 50 Cent's previous albums, Get Rich or Die Tryin', which sold 11 million copies and became the top-selling record of 2003, and The Massacre , released in 2005 with sales of nearly 8 million.

He's winning but it's a long race and I think 50 will end up beating him after it's all said and done. I'm glad that he beat him in the 1st week sales though maybe 50 will lose some of that cockiness he got.........i doubt it though

Anywho, like I was saying, how many rappers claim that they're going to "retire", only to end up putting out another album in 2 years?  Stop frontin Fif.  You can't kill a God-given talent, no matter how hard you try.  It may get pushed to the side, but those lyrics and the drive to perform will surface sooner or later.

*No comment on Cam'Ron.  Ever since he made that video talking trash in front of his kiddie pool, I lost respect*

Has anybody else noticed that the media has been blasting this mess with OJ all over the news, in an attempt to make us forget about the Jena 6 situation?  Hmmm, I'm just wondering if anybody caught on to that.

Boss Hova has a nice ring to it and the line up is lookin' good so far. Jay-z can't make a bad album. I just want it to live up to the expectations. If it gets hyped up for a year make sure it's worth it. Like when Dre drops an album he never disappoints. Speakin' of Dre
can we finally get Detox in '08.

It's about time Cam said something instead of other people speakin' for him. Hopefully he can shed some light on was really goin' on w/ the Dip set, so niggaz can stop speculatin'. I don't want any bullshit politically correct, I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings answers. I want truth as fucked up as it may be. No more smoke screens.

It might seem good right now but Jae Hood would get lost in the shuffle on G-unit. I think he should just do him and go somewhere where there are no distractions.

Illseed, I co-sign that OJ got set-up. On the news this morning the auctioneer said he told OJ who was selling his stuff and what hotel he was staying in and somebody from TMZ paid him to tape record the confrontation. The whole situation is real iffy. OJ is gonna ride again.

i also think that donovan mcnabb is just making up excuses to why he lost, dont get me wrong he's a good player but he just have to admit that they lost on his term and they should of played better (my opinion)

Naw, i think it's going to continue for a few more years.  The reason why this HIP-POP has gotten popular because of us and when the music industry sees people listening to it, their going to promote it, which means money for them and the artists.  It's a money hungry world out here and whatever sales, their going to go that route.  Sad, but true.

to me it seems like folks aren't quite ready for a tailored suit wearing  sing song singing Curtis.....

Jay-Z isn't made for these times. Dude is in his 30's doing grown man shit. Young dudes who have small corner dreams, thinking little silly stuff staring at their Air Force one collection can't relate to half the stuff this dude says.

I liked Kingdom Come, it wasn't on the levels of his other albums, but it was better than Kanye's Album out now, 50, Cam's, or most sh*t out. To me only Nas Album was better that year.

In the days of "Crank that Soldier Boy", and all these  other stupid ass songs out, somebody who comes with laced grown lyrics will get drowned out by stupid shit.

But I will say that Jay needs to either be fully in it or just leave the shit alone. Meaning he should have came out with videos for "30's the New 20" went on Tour with Nas (Not a long one but some selected cities) to promote their albums. Do a video for "Black Republicans" and some remixes here and there and Jay's album wouldn't be so "Here today gone today" style.

    I'm buying the album though.

You need to put an asterisk by Tom Brady name like they doing Barry Bonds bc it's easy to be a top qb if you know all the other teams defensive schemes..If there coach was black he would've been fired instead of fined..I hope everybody is seeing how they crucify us for the things we do and look at the majority of the mufuckas on steroids--white, the color of the refs betting on games-- white, the color of the coach that was cheating--white...They keep fucking up the integrity of  Pro sports to try and compete with the black athletes and coaches and they all get slaps on the wrist when they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar..Now, look at Vick, Pacman, Artest, Rasheed,Bonds and any black coach..I hope don't none of the white folks get offended bc of my statements but it's the truth and nothing personal...No, I don't think all white people are devils but i'd like to finally see everybody getting judged off of what they do instead of just their skin color..They making a big deal about Donovan McNabbs statements about the criticism of black qb's opposed to whites..And??? The only part that was for you pimpin was the first line..I just decided to vent about a few other things...

"Album Buyers Show Up...And Buy CDs

A couple things stuck me about the first-week sales totals for Kanye West, 50 Cent and Kenny Chesney. First, like many people I was surprised by the quantity of sales. West's Graduation sold 957,000 units, an incredible amount in a year when album sales are down 14%. 50 Cent's Curtis moved 691,000. Obviously the manufactured rivalry between the two rappers spurred sales. Chesney's Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates moved 387,000, a number that would be for #1 in a typical week. Majors' release schedules have been flat this year and its new album launches have failed to inspire and excite consumers. Last week, there was finally some excitement in the air.

The other thing that stood out about last week's top three albums was their relatively low digital-to-total album percentage. From what I've seen over the years the higher album sales go, the lower that percentage becomes. To punch up to the high six digits, the CD needs to be as broadly distributed as possible. Digital sales are, of course, growing, but digital sales alone won't push an album to the top of the chart.

Last week, Kanye West's digital sales represented 14% of total sales. For 50 Cent and Kenny Chesney, the numbers were 8% and 9%, respectively. What those numbers tell me is those artists' labels and distributors did an good job moving the CD and getting sell-through (though I don't know what was shipped on each title). The albums' digital shares were good but lower than I expected. As a point of comparison, Grey's Anatomy Vol.3 debuted at #16 with sales of 26,000 and a digital share of 43%. Maroon 5's It Won't Soon Before Long has sold 1.24 million units in 17 weeks and has a digital share of 18%.

CD sales are down about 20% in 2007, but as these sales numbers show, the physical format still has some life left in it. The timing of the releases coincide with a season typically targeted because students are recently back to school and have money in hand. These are the same students that download music from P2P networks and by most reports have given up on the CD. So unless students suddenly discovered the CD, older consumers were the ones excited by last week's release schedule. (I'll point out that I haven't seen any new release CDs in the Vanderbilt bookstore in the last month. The one display rack, practically out of view, has product left over from last school year.)

Graduation sold more digital albums in one week than any other album. Digital sales, though, were not the reason for the huge first week. By squeezing as much as it could out of physical distribution, Def Jam and Universal Music and Video Distribution scored a fantastic first week."

I said it before and will again, brovas like you are needed in the world.  Keep your head up and your eyes open when moving through life.  Good people are targeted (by every race) and the haters will look to take you down as soon as they get the chance.

Dont let your weaknesses get the best of you, you have a gift and make sure you spread it to each the best you can.

It seems as if Twon may have been reached in some way and that's positive.  Dude has his views but it's good sometimes to cordially accept other views from your peers.

I'm am a scavenger of knowledge and try to compensate for my wasted youth doing stupid shit.  I've learned alot from this site since joining, it's good to vibe with different folk all over tha world.

As I said before keep your head up, eyes open and mouth preaching my dude.

@dboy...Sorry about your pops homie, I've been through St. Louis and other cities up there once, it ain't no joke with that racism isht.

    @Twon
We had our little verbal spats due to me defending myself against your tatics.

You are going to belee what you belee but just try to look at life on a GODLY level.

Im not religious by any means but I belee in GOD highly.
Our ultimate goal is to get to heaven not to fight White people.

IF someone throw a rock at you...hit they ass wit a boulder.
Im wit that but GODs people are all people and I respect that.

Whether you continue to bang on me...thats up to you "pa".
But I see where your coming from and understand the way you relay your message...I'll but up the forearm if you throw a punch but I wont attack.

Shouts out to the good white people in the world...and A-Body else too.

Voices from Jena: White School Board Member Accuses Jena Six of Committing a Hate Crime, Says Nooses Were Hung from a Schoolyard Tree "In a Joking Manner"

During a recent trip to Jena, Democracy Now! interviewed Billy “Bulldog” Fowler, a member of the La Salle Parish School Board. Fowler, 68, moved to Jena in 1940. He says Jena is being unfairly painted as racist. He feels the hanging nooses were blown out of proportion, that in the high school setting it was more of a prank: “This is the Deep South, and [older] black people know the meaning of a noose. Let me tell you something—young people don’t.” [includes rush transcript]
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Racial tensions run deep in Jena. Being in the media spotlight has only made it more uncomfortable for some residents of this 85 percent white town. They feel Jena has been unfairly painted as "the most racist town in the world."
I spoke to La Salle Parish School Board member Billy Wayne Fowler earlier this month. His brother Mack Fowler recently retired as the coach of the high school football team. Almost all of the Jena Six had played for the school and Mychal Bell in particular was considered a star player with a future in professional football.

I want to play excerpts of my interview with 68 year old school board member Billy Fowler. He moved to Jena in 1940.

Billy “Bulldog” Fowler, member of the La Salle Parish School Board

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AMY GOODMAN: Racial tensions are running deep in Jena. Being in the media spotlight has only made it more uncomfortable for some residents of this 85% white town. They feel Jena has been unfairly painted as “the most racist town in the world.”

I spoke to La Salle Parish School Board member, Billy Wayne Fowler, when Democracy Now! went to Jena earlier this month. His brother Mack Fowler retired as the coach of the high school football team. Almost all the Jena Six had played for the school, and Mychal Bell, in particular, was considered a star player with a future in professional football.

I want to play excerpts of the interview with the sixty-eight-year-old school board member, Billy Fowler. He moved to Jena in 1940.

BILLY FOWLER: Our town? Our town is a typical Deep South town. If I could take you back fifty years ago, a lot of this that's been said today may be true. But if you compare us today to fifty years ago, we have come a long way. We're still not perfect, but we still are Deep South Southerners.

I don't think you find anybody here that mistreats black folks. There's nothing in Jena that whites do that blacks can't do. Not one thing. If you'd have come during the week, I could have taken you up to the swimming pool, where blacks and white mix swimming. We had a football game here a week ago, blacks and white mixing without incident.

Only a small portion of the black community here claims that we are racial. A big majority of the black folks will tell you they don't think it is. Unfortunately, the early stories that came out of the national medias was inaccurate, and they only covered one side of the story.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, tell us about what happened last September, the student asking in the assembly if he could sit under the tree.

BILLY FOWLER: OK. I’m glad you asked that question. The answer to that question came out as clear as the nose on your face when the FBI report was made public. The FBI was in here days after all this took place, and they spent considerable time here and they did a thorough investigation. They turned their investigation over to the US attorney for the Justice Department, who is Donald Washington, housed out of Lake Charles, Louisiana. And I happened to be at the forum when he gave the FBI report.

And what he said in his report is that he could find nothing that was done wrong here in Jena by any authority. He couldn't find any law that had been violated in order to bring a charge against anybody. Now, he said that he felt like the DA's charges were harsh, but it was within the scope of the law. It was to the fullest extent of the law. He didn't agree with it, and neither do most people around here today. Both black and white thinks the charges were too high.

Even when you ask about the boys asking the principal if they could sit under the tree, well, these two sets, the white group and the black group, they were always throwing darts at one another in a joking manner. And that's what the FBI report said. It was in a joking manner. Bad taste. Bad taste. Shouldn't have happened. But that's what was happening.

Now, I know what's probably going through your mind: now, this is the Deep South, and black people don't know the significance of a noose? Well, let me tell you something. The young black folks in the Deep South probably don't understand that. The older ones do, and they resent it, and I don't blame them. But the new ones, I’m not sure if they do or not.

AMY GOODMAN: Could you feel the tensions rising after that in the next few months?

BILLY FOWLER: Well, the tensions have never been what you probably think that they were. Only the parents involved, of the six, you know, obviously, they’re going to be upset.

But let me make another point here. When Mr. Washington went over the hate crime and told why the two white guys couldn't be charged, because blacks and whites were sticking their head through the noose in a joking manner, well, after he went over those five components and said that the main component is there has to be intent to harm, now, who do you think more fits a hate crime here than anybody? If you take what a hate crime, the five components, who more closely fits that than anybody? The six.

It was a plan. It wasn't a fight; it was a planned deal. And there were people that got there to break it up pretty quick. The guy was laying on the ground unconscious. Now, as it turned out, he might not have been injured as severely as they first thought. He looked like he was dead, laying on the ground, because he was out. And they were still pounding on him. When they got there, pulled them off of him. So, was that intent to harm? In my estimation, it is.

But you know what? Little old Jena being -- supposed to be the most racist town in the world. Nobody here has ever even suggested that, nor do we want them charged with that. We think the charges were too stiff, too harsh, and I believe they’re going to be reduced down. They did break the law, and they’re going to be convicted of something, but it's going to be a lot lesser.

Don't get me wrong. I’ve lived here. I spent forty-five years in education before I retired, and coaching. I don't see black or white. I see right and wrong. And I’m from the old school. I don't apologize for that, but I come from the old school, and I’m one of these that, you know, if I tell you I want something done, I want it done right now. And I don't want to hear excuses. I want to get it done. So, my outlook on this, I feel like they did wrong. There's some consequences to it, but not second-degree murder.

AMY GOODMAN: Have you talked to the DA --

    BILLY FOWLER: No.

AMY GOODMAN: Reed Walters about this?

BILLY FOWLER: No. Hard to see him, understandably so. He's got a number of things going for him or going that he’s having to tend to, and he don't have time to talk to people like me or anybody else. But I’ve talked to probably more people around here than anybody, and I’m about the only white person that will talk.

AMY GOODMAN: What do you mean?

BILLY FOWLER: Ma’am, most of them started out wanting to talk, until Mr. Mangold of the BBC come in here and did that number on them. I didn't talk to him. At that time, I wasn't saying anything. But when I saw that nobody else was going to take, pick up the torch and at least defend our town, I started doing it. And I started trying to find out about divided school, the school getting burned down.

AMY GOODMAN: What happened to the tree?

BILLY FOWLER: Got cut down. And I apologize for not thinking about it soon enough, or I would have cut it down. That tree was a negative thing. School was about to start. Nobody wanted those kids coming back to school looking at that tree with the history that it had. Then the major reason: school burned down, we got to build back. We're going to build a single-story building, and it's going to cover that spot where the tree was standing. It's going to have to. If you go up there and look, you can see that in order to build a large single-story building, it would have to include it. So that's probably the major reason. And I think the negative thing that the kids would be thinking about couldn't have been something good.

AMY GOODMAN: How many school board members are there?

    BILLY FOWLER: Ten.

AMY GOODMAN: How many are white, how many black?

BILLY FOWLER: There's one black. That's 10%, right? You know how many black is in this parish?

    AMY GOODMAN: How many?

BILLY FOWLER: 8%. We got the fewest number of minorities of any parish in this state. It's 8%.

AMY GOODMAN: When Reed Walters, the DA, came to the school after the nooses were hung, after the black students protested by standing under the tree, there was an assembly held --

BILLY FOWLER: Now, that wasn't a protest. Now, they asked the assistant principal, “Are we allowed to sit under the tree?” And you know what he told them? “You sit anywhere you want to.” Then, they went back the next day, and that's when the nooses were hung. Again, this is part of that jesting around, from what I’ve been told, probably in very poor taste. I don't think you will find any more jesting around like that’s going to take place up there.

AMY GOODMAN: I understood that after the nooses were hung, that the black students went under the tree in protest of those nooses?

BILLY FOWLER: Some of them stuck their head through the nooses.

AMY GOODMAN: What does that mean?

BILLY FOWLER: You tell me. That's part of the joke that I think the FBI report found. Now, if you're saying that they protested in anger, I don't think that happened.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, after this, there was an assembly with the DA --

    BILLY FOWLER: Right, right.

AMY GOODMAN: -- coming, Reed Walters and the police.

    BILLY FOWLER: Mm-hmm.

AMY GOODMAN: And those present said that he said --

BILLY FOWLER: He said some hard things.

AMY GOODMAN: What did you understand he said?

BILLY FOWLER: Well, he said some things, “I could ruin your life with one stroke of a pen.” Again, I can't speak for him on what he meant. I think what he was trying to say: “We don't need anymore of this foolishness. Stop it now.” I think that's what he meant. I don't think he meant to physically do harm to anybody. But that's what I think. I don't know that.

I can tell you one thing: Mr. Chapman from FBI researched that out real thorough. Now, neither he or Donald Washington agreed with the assessment that he shouldn't have said it, and that's one of the things that I think if he had it to go over again, I don’t think he would. But I can't speak for him. I don't know.

AMY GOODMAN: So what do you think of the logic of the kids thinking: he comes to the school with armed police; he says, “I can wipe you out with the stroke of a pen”; and a few months later, six of them are charged with second-degree attempted murder for a schoolyard fight?

BILLY FOWLER: Well, I guess if you put it like that, it looks bad. But if you consider what those six did, you know, I think it's pretty safe to say they intended to do some bodily harm. Again, he could have charged them with a hate crime and didn't. Now, I’ve already said nobody around here wants that to happen, and it can't happen now. But he could have at that time. There's a lot of things that probably could be done differently, sort of like Monday morning quarterbacking.

I’m sort of proud of our little town. I think we've come a long way. I’m telling you, do you remember when -- that was about fifty years ago, maybe a little more -- there were strong white groups, not only in Jena, but all the way down through Louisiana?

AMY GOODMAN: By white groups, you mean?

    BILLY FOWLER: Yeah.

AMY GOODMAN: What do you mean by that?

BILLY FOWLER: I’m just talking about white groups.

    AMY GOODMAN: Like the Klan?

BILLY FOWLER: Similar. Now, I was raised here, and what I knew about the Klans were what we read in a history book. It was older white people. But back then, there was certainly no racial issues here. Now, compare that to today, back then blacks would go to the theater; they’d have to sit upstairs, whites down here, because that’s pretty common, if they could even go to the movie. But other than that, other than they had their school, we had ours.

I was raised up here a little place called Goodpine, and there was a Newsweek lady in here, and I spent three hours with her. And I took her over there, and I said, “Now I’m going to take you over to the quarters.” She said, “Is that a racial term?” I said, “No, it's a sawmill term ’round here, because this used to be a sawmill community.” And we had four large sawmills. And each sawmill, the first people they would bring in when they set up a sawmill were black workers. The first people who were laid off were white people. Now, you say, well, that's strange. Well, no, not really. They laid them off, because they paid them more than they did the black, and that's why. But the blacks were never unemployed. And the word "quarters," that's where they lived. Our -- where we lived was called "quarters." Sawmill term. And there was a road. I could take you up there and show you where the road is. They didn't cross over, we didn't cross over. But on Sunday, we’d play them in baseball. And they beat us nearly every Sunday. They could play baseball. We weren't very good. But we never had a fight. We never had any disputes. Just had a good time. So we've come a long way.

There are no more white groups. The only groups around here now is the NAACP and maybe the ACLU. And in this particular town, I don't think either one of them are really needed, but if they want to have it, that’s so be it. Doesn't bother me one bit. And I believe when all this is over, whatever problems that they think they have or want addressed, I think the whites are going to sit down with them and solve any problem that they've got. And I’m going to help it. I’m on the school board. And I can promise you, any discipline that's handed out that's not fair and even, the school board is going to get involved. There will be -- I don't know if blacks have been mistreated on discipline in the past or not, but I can tell you it's not going to happen on our watch, especially after this.

Voices from Jena: African American Educator from Jena Accuses DA of Conflict of Interest in Handling of Jena Six Case

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Former Assistant School Superintendent Cleveland Riser says local district attorney Reed Walters should have recused himself from the Jena Six case because he also serves as the attorney for the local school board. When the school board was asked to review the expulsion of the six students, Walters prevented them from reviewing an internal school district investigation. [includes rush transcript]
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Memories of segregation are still fresh in the minds of an older generation of Jena's African American residents. For them the current racial tensions are inseparable from the past.
Cleveland Riser, Jr. is a 74-year-old former Assistant Superintendent of Schools in La Salle Parish. Riser retired in 1985. He lives on a street named after him in the all-black community of Goodpine that neighbors Jena. I spoke to him in his garden and began by asking him to contextualize the events of the past year in Jena.

Cleveland Riser, Jr., Former Asst. Schools Superintendent in La Salle Parish.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

AMY GOODMAN: Memories of segregation are still fresh in the minds of an older generation of Jena's African American residents. For them, the current racial tensions are inseparable from the past.

Cleveland Riser, Jr., seventy-four-year-old former assistant superintendent of schools in La Salle Parish, he retired in 1985, lives on a street named after him in the all-black community of Goodpine that neighbors Jena.

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I have to go back to 1969 to really talk about the system, and that was -- the reason why I say that is because in 1969 I was the principal of the formerly all-black school here, when the total school integration took place. The school is right down here at the end of the street. And during that switchover, changeover, the thought of most people was, one, they closed our school, which was black, to send us to their school, which was white. And that feeling and that tone is still in the air, is that Jena High School does not belong to black kids, it belongs to the white kids. And as a result of that, many black kids, many black parents, are saying that we have no school anymore. Many white parents are saying, “This is our school. We don't need y’all here anymore, either.”

So, from that angle, my position has always been, is that we're not worried about what school we go to; education is the most important thing. And if we're going to get an education in La Salle Parish, those of us that live in the Jena area, our kids must go to Jena High School. And we can forget about the name. All we want teachers to do is teach. Then we learn, and we get out of here.

My wife and I have had two children to graduate from Jena High School. Neither one of them have ever had a problem, because they left here every day knowing that the number one reason why they were in schools was to get an education, so they can get a foundation and go on some place and develop themselves, so that they can become self-sufficient and take care of themselves. So this is what I’ve tried to maintain my fifty years here.

AMY GOODMAN: When did you hear about the nooses being hung from the tree?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: The same day that it was heard of or talked about in town. I don't know what date that was, but it was the same day that -- when the nooses were there and the uproar started.

AMY GOODMAN: And what did you think when you heard it?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I thought it was a disgrace, first. And then it even has become more disgraceful, because of the action that was taken and the compounding of all of the town folks wanting to get involved -- not all of them, but the powers that are wanted to get involved in what was a school matter. And they did not get into it in the right way, as far as I understand, by what the law should be. And so, it really bothered me. And it still bothers me, because from that, I think it was the fire that started all of the confusion we have now.

AMY GOODMAN: The school principal recommended that the students who hung the nooses be expelled. The superintendent -- you were an assistant superintendent there --

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: No, no, not now. I retired in ’85.

AMY GOODMAN: No. But you were an assistant --

    CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: OK, alright.

AMY GOODMAN: -- in terms of positions, you know that position well.

    CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Yeah.

AMY GOODMAN: The superintendent overruled him and said that the students should not be expelled, more saw it as a high school prank.

    CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Yeah.

AMY GOODMAN: Do you think the superintendent did the right thing?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: That was a tremendous mistake from an administrative point of view, simply because of the awareness of what that really meant and in a time when there's a lot of other undercurrents of confusion between the races anyway. And by the superintendent and the boards and this committee that was formed to review this saying that it was something minor is a thing I call ignorance.

AMY GOODMAN: We just talked a white Jena resident who said older people understand the significance of the noose, but the kids, they don't.

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I think black kids understand it. White kids may not. They may think it is a game. But the history of nooses is not something that you want to be comfortable with.

AMY GOODMAN: You want to talk about the history of Jena, in terms of that symbolism, the history of this area?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: That symbolism has not been -- that was the first time it was just brought up here, as far as public discussion was concerned. Many people here, I do believe, and especially if they are adults, have read the history of what they meant. And many of them, I don't necessarily say that they agree. I know that in the black community, it’s never been one that was accepted, that any action of this nature was simply trying to carry you back to some times when you didn't exist, not this current group of generation of us now. So, the concept was attached to it here in Jena openly, when that did occur.

AMY GOODMAN: Is it fair to describe this part of the country, decades ago, as Klan country?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I found the Klan group when I came in 1956.

AMY GOODMAN: Where did you find it?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Up and down the streets here, because they were riding on the hoods. I knew the Grand Dragon.

AMY GOODMAN: Tell us about him.

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I made it a point to know him, because my experience in the military. I appreciated to the fact that -- in fact, I accepted to go into the military to make sure that there was no reason why I shouldn't be an American. And when I got out, I proceeded to go to LSU to go to school, where I met the same thing there: rejection because my skin was black. And, of course, I did have a military discharge, and I said to the instructor that questioned my being there, asked him if he had one, and he said no. Then I asked him the same question he asked me: “What are you doing here?”

Of course, when I got to know the Klansmen here, I simply said to them that “I have a right to be here, and I have a family that don't need anybody riding a hood by and interfering with my livelihood, and if you call yourself a man, I would like to meet you outside away from under that hood.” And so, I was able to meet a few.

AMY GOODMAN: Did they take off their hoods?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Oh, yeah. I knew once I found out who they were, I made it a point to make sure I met them.

    AMY GOODMAN: Why?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Why? Because you don’t represent yourself a man under a hood, and I made this known, that if you're not man enough to let people see who you are, you're a coward. And so, I just don't deal with cowards.

AMY GOODMAN: So when you met them, what did you say?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I said a few dirty words. I’m not going to repeat them. But I did say this one thing, is that, “As an American, I have a right to be here. As a man, I respect you enough to let you look at me in the face. And if you disrespect yourself enough not to look me in the face, then you have a real problem.”

AMY GOODMAN: And so, we come to 2007.

    CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Six.

AMY GOODMAN: Talk about the Jena Six. You have the nooses that were hung. The kids are not suspended -- they’re not expelled; they’re suspended. You have escalating tension, and then you have the schoolyard fight.

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Politically based pressures on those who are in authority positions to quote, in some people's opinion, “let them know what their place is, and we have an opportunity now to do this. So from your position, we want you to make sure that they remember that there are some bridges you don't cross in Jena,” just as there are some in many other places that are known not to be crossed, as well. We're not the only -- we're just a little small part of America that became visible.

AMY GOODMAN: Do you think it was right of the DA, Reed Walters, to go into the school?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: No. And I told him so.

AMY GOODMAN: Why? Why was it wrong?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: He's not a school administrator. The major problem that we have -- remember I told you it’s politics? -- is that the politics of the school system is based upon people that does not have education as their motive. The policy of the school system, and that means those who are elected school board members, many of them, and traditionally -- this has been a fact -- they have their little domains. That means, from the section which they are elected, they are elected based upon who do you stand for, us or inclusive of them? And many times it does appear, because I do not live in those areas, but many of the actions is that we don't necessarily -- I don't necessarily represent all of them; I represent you, because you elected me.

AMY GOODMAN: What did Reed Walters say when you told him it was wrong of him to go into the school?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: He disagreed. That's all. He just disagreed.

AMY GOODMAN: How did he explain himself?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: What he said is confidential between me and him, but he just disagreed.

AMY GOODMAN: During this time, did you see the tensions escalating?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: I felt, because of the dialogue that went between the black community, especially, that it was a threat, that it was an intimidation act to give unrest to the black children who were on that campus. And it was taken, as some of them referred to it, as a joke, which was a tremendous mistake by the sheriff. Initially, the sheriff's department wasn't involved as much as they should have or could have, would have, had it been just the reverse of people who probably had that same actions. It just brought out something that was apparent, but it was lying dormant.

AMY GOODMAN: What do you think now should happen?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: What do I think now should happen? One, there should be a very thorough investigation by whatever power that has the guts to do it. And by that, I simply mean there are some rights and wrongs in our country, and the rights are talked about, but the wrongs are never investigated. And that’s the reason why I say there needs to be some investigation and some follow-up from the noose hanging that would show that once it was ignited, then it became more inflamed by the actions of whites against the black, and then nothing was done about that.

Then, all of a sudden, one black -- one white child gets involved with a fight, where he didn't stand a chance of winning, because he just didn't stand a chance, because of either one of the boys could have whipped him, you know, as far as that’s concerned. The holding a boy to say that he was -- assault and battery was something that knocked the boy unconscious --nobody else showed me where the boy was hit, knocked unconscious. Did he fell and bump his head on the ground? I mean, I don't know who did that. So nobody else said that he was conscious, unconscious when he hit the ground. Nobody knows.

So what I’m thinking is that with an unbiased group of people looking at all of the facts of where this has escalated to now, a lot of the decisions that have been made would be reversed, because one -- a decision not to say anything, do anything to a white man that beat up on these boys that Saturday night, not to do anything or say anything to the white man that took the gun, and these boys took the gun away from him, and charge them with battery and then with taking somebody's gun. It was the white man’s [inaudible]. Until such times as these things are brought to pass, to be a fact where neglect was done, then you're going to have justice that has two sides. And if you happen not to be on the light skin side, you're in trouble.

AMY GOODMAN: The DA is also the lawyer for the school board.

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Yes. Conflict of interest.

AMY GOODMAN: So when the new school board was elected in January with some old members, some new, they were told to vote on whether the kids should be expelled.

    CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Mm-hmm.

AMY GOODMAN: The DA of was there, and he told them that he couldn't show them the investigation for them to make their decision upon, because that would compromise the court hearing.

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: He should of recused himself from the whole thing. I mean, when you can't talk, you can't talk. Why say something that I’m saying it from my position, rather than saying my duty to all the people? So, why say anything? Why get involved in it? If it's going to have to come by me to take it to court, why should I be involved? Why should I advise anybody? So when you recuse yourself or show that you didn't have any regard for what the law says by being a part of any of the discussion, going to Jena High School was a grand mistake. I mean, what are you going to go up there for? You're not a teacher. Nobody hired you to go up there and then discipline kids.

AMY GOODMAN: Finally, how has this whole controversy make you feel about your town, your city, Jena?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: It makes me understand that there are fragments of the United States that got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. That's the way it makes me feel. And that it won't be the last time it happens. It just so happened it happened in Jena this time. And that when this is all said and done, it's going to be another page in what the powers that are and, because of the texture of one's skin, what can happen to you in a country that says that this is America. That's all. We're not near to the system of acceptance. I just wonder how this is going to work ten years from now in this country, when there will be no racial dominance.

AMY GOODMAN: Is there anything else you would like to add?

CLEVELAND RISER, JR.: Yeah. I would like to add this. I don't mind talking about our situation, but I do want everybody to know: Jena is not a bad place to live in. No. The reason why it's not is because -- many people think it's not, just simply because, in my opinion, people do not pursue their interests; they, many times, live in the past. They live in what happened during the early period of our grandparents’ life. And this is white and black, you see? It's not a matter of just this one group. It’s I can't -- what two school board members told me when I applied for the superintendent’s job is that, “I know that you are the best prepared person. I believe that this school system would be in very good hands if we would elect you. But I can't vote for you,” simply because of the pattern of recognition given to black people when his dad was living.

So -- and I wouldn't say that that's just Jena. I live next door to Jonesville. My home is in Winfield. I have friends all over the state. And these are the same problems. They’re just not caught up in the media, as we've gotten caught up. Actually, myself, I’m glad we did. I’m glad we got caught in the situation so that more people could find out, one, the value of education, and let’s everybody go back to work on that part, because ignorance is a bad disease. And if you don't replace it with something good, you’re going to have three or four more generations coming along being ignorant. That’s it.

AMY GOODMAN: Cleveland Riser, Jr., former assistant superintendent of schools in La Salle Parish, the highest level position a black man has ever occupied in the school system there in Jena.

Mayne, we had a NASTY ass storm roll through sunday night and that shit fried my modem and knocked the cable out RIGHT before sunday night football was about to start..Luckily the cable kicked back on in the middle of the 1st quarter, but I just got the new modem in today, so I'm back.

I thought we only had to worry about hurricanes down here, but some tornados hit 3 miles from my house..I never seen one before sunday night...shit wasn't pretty I do know that much

I posted a new message in the beers boobs league..Basically the Gator's got their future in their own hands. Number 3 right now and we play the 2 squad in a couple weeks. I think LSU might be a little too strong for the Gators this year, but I hope I'm wrong.  LSU just got too much offense for the young UF defense. Early Ducet is a monster, and I dont think anyone on the Gators can cover him. It should be a good, high scoring game, and it's in the bayou. The shitty thing is, even if the gators beat them once, they will probably have to play them again in the SEC champ game.

I was just thinkin about this the other night..remember when Auburn went undefeated and didn't get an invite to the Nat'l Champ game? Wasn't that the same year that USC played Oklahoma, after Oklahoma lost to Kansas State in the Big 12 Champ game? If so I demand a replay! I bet Auburn would get in that ass. Jason Campbell, Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, Carlos Rogers, them boys had a SQUAD

    @BigSlimFL
have been watching The Contender? i peeped the new one last night. that Max Alexander was sorry. he weak and no kind of definition to his body, for a fighter. i'm glad he gone cause he wasn't doing nothing but instigating like a lil ol' BEYATCH! LOL and thought he was hella poppin cause he had 14-0. but only been fighting for a few years? SUCKA.

other dude SAM (?) had like 21 years experience. and looked hard as hell too (from Australia!). but boy, he might be the most sloppiest fighter i ever saw. Alexander ain't never lied when he said, "no one will ever look good against dude." that is so true.  that sloppy shit frustrates me to the point that i can't focus on the damn fight! but he still whooped Alexander's ass tho. don't know who i like yet, still checkin on that. but there's my updated view on that shit...holla! p.s glad y'all okay with the storms. them tornados ain't no joke. ask Sean Papi ^^^^ i'm sure he knows all about 'em!

yea I been watchin it..Max Alexander was actually the favorite, from what I've heard, to win the whole thing. I've seen Sam Soliman fight before (he fought Winky Wright and threw about 2,000 punches)..he's sloppy but he puts so many punches up its hard to defend against him. I thought Alexander had a chance when he said that he was acutally a lefty but had been in the gym the whole time standing traditional. I thought that when he came out lefty, Soliman would have been flustered, but he stuck to his game plan, which is punch punch punch, if they land, good if not, he's not gonna have time to hit me.

I like Sakio Bika, Sam Soliman, can't hate on Jaidon after he put that on that demonstration in the first fight

Luckily the twisters weren't that bad (I guess) they didn't total anyone's house, but flipped cars over and what not...I thought you were supposed to be able to hear those things? I just thought it was a bad thunderstorm until the cable came back on and they were talkin about tornado damage

    ------------------------

I know you've heard from me a lot this week.  But I hope you agree that these messages and updates are important.  I promise to slow down when the Empire disintegrates under the weight of the people's collective struggle against it!

For those of you who are not going to Jena, but who want to do something to express your solidarity, please wear black tomorrow.  If you are in one of the cities that will host a press conference, show up for the press conference with the appropriate signage.  For those of you in the Atlanta area, join me for the press conference tomorrow morning at 10:30 in front of the Rush Memorial UCC Church on James P. Brawley Drive on the campus of Clark Atlanta University!  See ya in the morning!

Here's the Atlanta area Press Release:

Georgians Stand in Solidarity with Activists Nationally:
Demanding Real Justice In Jena, Louisiana

Atlanta, Georgia- Activists, organizers, students, and community members throughout Georgia are called to participate in a Public Demonstration and Press Conference in solidarity with the "Jena 6" at 10:30 a.m . Thursday, September 20, 2007, in front of Rush Memorial UCC Church at 150 James P. Brawley Drive located on the campus of Clark Atlanta University in  Atlanta, Georgia.  Speakers include Professor Kathleen Cleaver, former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Senator Vincent Fort, Reverend Timothy McDonald, John Evans, and Reverend Derrick Rice.  We are encouraging all participants to wear black to demonstrate solidarity with those demonstrating around the country.

The ongoing legal battle of six African American teenagers against trumped up charges in Jena, Louisiana makes it even clearer that racism and its systemic aggression against Black Americans continues to grow in this country. In Georgia, over two thousand people rallied in Douglas County to demand justice for Genarlow Wilson. On September 20th, we will put tens of thousands more in the streets in Jena, to demand justice for Mychal Bell and the Jena 6. This time the demand for justice will resonate throughout the land.

In addition to the over thirty organizations and churches that have endorsed this effort, students and community members throughout the state will join in solidarity with a national coalition for justice called for by Detroit City Councilman Kwame Kenyatta and activist radio personality, Bob Law.

This national coalition not only stands in solidarity with the Jena 6 but also with The Katrina International Tribunal and the many others fighting for justice in Louisiana.

While the conviction of Mychal Bell, one of the six Black youngsters in Jena, has been thrown out by the Third District Court of Appeals, the struggle for justice is far from over.  Our concern is that the racist double standard remains in tact allowing whites to commit acts of aggression against Blacks with impunity, while Black youngsters face unjust prosecutions and harsher prison sentences.

We will stand in solidarity on September 20th, the day Mychal Bell was scheduled to be sentenced for a bogus second degree battery conviction, with not only the tens of thousands that will march in Jena, but with those gathering around the country including St Louis, Kansas City, New York, Detroit,  Philadelphia, Newark, and more.  We stand in solidarity with activists nationally calling on the mayor of each American city, as well as everyone with a national voice and influence, to publicly denounce the judicial farce taking place in Jena, Louisiana. We encourage city councils nationwide to follow the lead of Atlanta, Georgia, Cambridge, Maryland and Detroit, Michigan and pass resolutions in the interest of justice, calling for the dismissal of all charges against the Jena 6 and not just another trial in juvenile court.

Additionally, we call on the corporations in Louisiana that are the recipients of millions of Black consumer dollars, to
denounce the injustice and blatant racism in Jena, Louisiana, in New Orleans generally, and in the Ninth Ward in particular. Some communities have already begun to say, "No justice, No profit!"

Across the country we say, "Enough is Enough!" We draw the line against racism and injustice here and now.  We will continue to strengthen this coalition of organizations across the country, fighting to challenge racism, whenever and wherever it raises its ugly head.

Supporting organizations include:  First Afrikan Presbyterian Church, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM), The Avarita L. Hanson Chapter of the Black Law Students Association, New Afrikan People's Organization (NAPO), Let Us Make Man, The Davis Bozeman Law Firm, Sankofa Society of Georgia State University, International Action Center, Foreverfamily, AfriSalsa Cultural Organization, N'COBRA Youth Commission, Operation LEADS, African American Ministers in Action, Sankofa UCC Church, The Law Office of Chris Leopold, N'COBRA at CAU,  < http://www.ayaed.com/> AYA Educational Institute,
African Community Centers, Minister Kenyatta Bush, Youth Pastor, Shiloh Baptist Church & Chair, Henry County Democratic Party, Youth Task Force, Campaign for Juvenile Justice, Grassroots Link, Armstrong & Associates, Law Offices of Robert Daniel, LLC, The Secret Firm, P.C., Georgia Alliance of African American Attorneys (GAAAA).

50's winnin in my eyes with this new information........
