Rap mogul sent threats to prison, inmate says

Former singer says warnings from Marion 'Suge' Knight prompted him to recant testimony in Biggie Smalls' slaying.

August 1, 2008

A state prison inmate who once implicated a Los Angeles police officer in the slaying of rap star Biggie Smalls testified Thursday that he recanted the allegation because of threats he received from a rival rap producer that were passed to him by a former Los Angeles Times reporter.

Waymond "Suave" Anderson, a former R&B singer, said reporter Chuck Philips passed him several written messages wrapped in plastic at Corcoran State Prison on behalf of rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight. He said the threats led him to give false testimony at a deposition last year in a civil lawsuit brought by the family of the slain rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace.


Anderson is a convicted murderer whose credibility has been questioned by prosecutors. The 43-year-old inmate made the claim over the last two days in a hearing examining evidence that he contends shows he is innocent of a 1993 murder. He is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Philips, in a telephone interview, denied Anderson's allegation.

"That never happened," said Philips, who has written several stories about Anderson's murder conviction suggesting that Anderson may be innocent. "I'm flabbergasted by this whole thing. This is the ultimate betrayal."

Knight, the founder of Death Row Records, could not be reached for comment.

Anderson and his attorney said the FBI has been investigating the singer's allegations. An FBI spokeswoman declined to comment.

In addition to his testimony about Philips and Knight, Anderson accused police officers, a prosecutor and two of his prior defense attorneys of corruption.

Anderson, who had a nationwide hit in the 1980s with an updated version of the Motown standard "My Girl," was convicted in 1997 of torching a drug users' hangout near USC and setting a man aflame to avenge an unpaid drug debt.

The events leading up to Anderson's murder trial and his attempts to win freedom have all the hallmarks of a legal soap opera.

Before his trial, a judge found him to be mentally incompetent and sent him to Patton State Hospital, a mental facility near San Bernardino. Anderson escaped, allegedly with the help of a hospital employee, but was captured at his sister's house and brought to trial, court records show.

After his conviction, Anderson won a new hearing in 2002 to determine whether his trial attorney was ineffective and to examine evidence that he said showed he was in Mississippi the day the murder took place. Following the hearing, a judge denied his petition for release, finding that Anderson and his supporters had tried to fabricate evidence and "perpetrate an elaborate fraud upon the court."

From behind bars, Anderson became involved in the Wallace family lawsuit, claiming to have information about the slaying. Attorneys for the slain rapper's family contend that a rogue LAPD officer orchestrated the fatal 1997 shooting of Wallace, also known as Notorious B.I.G.

Anderson testified Thursday that he spoke to LAPD homicide detectives about the killing.

He implicated former LAPD Officer David Mack in the slaying.

But last summer, Anderson recanted, telling lawyers representing Wallace's relatives that he had lied and did not know Mack.

At one time, LAPD detectives had investigated Mack in connection with Wallace's slaying.

A theory of one detective was that Mack orchestrated the killing on behalf of Knight, who was feuding with another rap label on the East Coast. Knight and Mack have both denied the allegations and Wallace's murder remains unsolved.

In his own murder case, Anderson and his supporters continued gathering evidence in his bid to prove that he was in Mississippi during the killing. He was granted a new hearing, which began last month in Judge William C. Ryan's downtown courtroom.

In recent weeks, Philips said, he has kept in regular contact with Anderson's family, though he has not been covering the hearing for the newspaper. Over the weekend, Philips said, Anderson's wife set up a conference call with Anderson from jail.

Anderson, he said, asked for his help. Philips said he told him he could do nothing more.

"He just said, 'I'm hung out here all by myself.' I said, 'I don't know what I can do. There's nothing I can do,' " Philips said.

Philips, who left The Times on Friday, has won many awards for his reporting, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1999. But some of his work has also been criticized. Earlier this year, the newspaper retracted one of his stories after it was revealed to have been based partly on fabricated documents.

Outside of court, Anderson's attorney David L. Bernstein said FBI agents had informed him in January that they were investigating the allegations and provided him with copies of the alleged notes. He said they included veiled threats that suggested someone was keeping watch on Anderson's family.

Lennox: Deputy-Involved shooting

Christian Portillo, 35, a Latino man, was shot to death by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy in the 11000 block of Dalerose Avenue in Lennox about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, July 23.

Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department, told the L.A. Times that two deputies were on patrol when they saw a man sitting in his parked car. Whitmore said the deputies approached the man and said he was  "physically startled, agitated and reached under his seat." One of the deputies, fearing for his safety, fired his weapon, hitting Portillo in the upper torso, according to Whitmore. More on the deputy-involved shooting. Portillo was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. No drugs or weapons were found in the vehicle, Whitmore said.

Six black Jena High School students are accused of beating a white student

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- A Louisiana appeals court has removed a Lasalle Parish judge from the remaining "Jena Six" cases, court officials told CNN Friday.

Attorneys for four of the defendants had asked 9th Judicial District Judge Thomas Yeager to recuse Judge J.P. Mauffrey Jr.

They said Mauffrey "had made numerous statements on numerous occasions" indicating he had already decided on a defendant's guilt and punishment.

"Indeed, Judge Mauffrey has expressed his belief generally that Jesse Ray [Beard] and his African-American friends are guilty, not only of the misconduct alleged in this matter, but of several other acts of misconduct as well," according to court documents filed in the case.

It was real good to come up in here on this blessful Friday. Ya'll made me crack a smile and a few laughs here and there. Most of all reunited with the AHH members, savere, classyb, lastly oye bangs azz :-).

It really has been difficult week with more than 52 quartz of blood transfusion after going into internal bleeding for almost 5 days, I was practically in my death bed.. it was real hard ya'll, made me almost quit, but I'm still here going stronger than ever and I just really wanna thank those who had me in their prayers.. It means allot to me because ur not only saving me but my kids who will have a mother a parent that they can look up to and id be there in a heartbeat for dem anyday choke choke...

-LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee came to blows one night backstage.

-Freddie Foxxx put a gun in Benzino's mouth on the Flavor Unit tour bus, because Benzino would not stop talking **** about what a thug he was

-"The bridge is over" was a Marley Marl beat that Krs One and Scott La Rock found in a studio.

-2pac was robbed and shot by some of Supreme's boys.

-"I got a story to tell" was vaguelly based on a real life incident Biggie had when he was slipping pipe to John Starks' woman.

-Eric B. did security for Mike Tyson throughout much of the 90's.

-Diamond D and his old late 80's group Ultimate Force with Master Rob recorded a full album with Jazzy Jay which has never been heard.

-A young Fat Joe and his boys Tony Montana(R.I.P) and Charlie Rock L.D were one of the top two crack crews in the Bronx in the mid 80's and bringing in thousands of $$$$ per day.

-Q Tip got fuked up so bad by one of the members of Wrexx N Effect that he lost partial sight in one of his eyes. ****EDIT***^^^^^very true^^^^^

-Nas came incredibly close to being on the Large Pro produced Kool G Rap, Xtra P, Freddie Foxxx and Ant posse cut "money in the bank" as he was always hangin' around Eric B.'s studio but had gone to pick up some weed with a chick so they let the Ant kid on there instead.

- Main Source (sans Large Pro) ran up in the Wild Pitch offices with machetes looking to behead MC Serch (then working as an A&R for the label) after a West Coast promotional tour went ****ty. MC Serch got wind that they were coming and escaped by crawling over the partial walls for his office and jetting out the back door.

- Grimm was supposed to be on "Live at the Barbecue" but he was arrested on the way to the studio.

-Rza and Killah Sin and another fam member went to see 50 perform after How To Rob and 50 got wind of them being there and dipped backstage and didn't perform, I have heard this one several times.

-Redman Smacked Prodigy around the time Hell On Earth was out b/c he was dissing Keith and Def Squad.

-A member of Wu got jumped at Suge's club in Las Vegas and Pac didn't like the way it went down and told Suge to squash the beef and he agreed outta respect.

-When Nas came to Boston around 94/95 somebody in RSO Crew (possibly Benzino) walked up to Nas and sonned him by knocking his baseball cap off of his head.

Whatsup LT.  I did read the article and it is in fact a very interesting one.

Reaffirms a lot of my beliefs.  One of which is that the Federal Reserve Bank (the private company that prints our bills) was effectively created to destroy the american economy, by making it feed off of its self.

No political party has been more essential in helping fulfill this mission, than the Republican party (check their track record).  Democrats certainly share blame as well, but its kind of like one party boils the water at a greater and much faster pace.

The democrats do a much better job at pretending to be a party promoting democracy than the republicans.  The republicans never said they would promote it, and blatantly  doesnt thru their consistency in supporting big business over the american publics best interest.

Right now, our country is in dept to China and Japan so greatly, that we should all probably start learning and practicing chinese and japanese and also their culture, because the generations to come will be slaves (in debt) to these two countries.  Throw Saudi Arabia in there somewhere also, because thru their investment strategies, they own a great deal of america as well.

The country (america) who has been known as the worlds super power, and also has been known as the worlds largest slave master, is now the worlds biggest hoe.  And naturally, the world doesnt have much empathy or sympathy for the new roman empire.

Our economy is feeding off of itself.  We are victims of our own philosophy (capitalism).  im not even sure if at this point, theres much we can do to save it.  The government entities cant even agree to disagree on the actual problem, let alone ignite a solution.

The author of the article, did offer some useful solutions.  Americans in their current ideological with never put those plans in to motion tho. Our values in this country are simply, "too fukked up", for lack of better terms.

Just look at the things we value.  Check the economical reports, and check which businesses flourish in this country, and that will tell you a great deal about the culture.

Just look into the african american community alone, and look at what is held at highest value.  Lets go deeper, look at hip hop.  Which artist sell the most? What are their messages?

People who say that the music isnt that influential on culture, are just brain masturbating.  African peoples for as long as they have been on this earth, have been heavily influenced by the music they produce and consume.

The music we produce, in large quantities, unfortunately is "bull shit" rapped in shiny gold wrapper.  (and shiny gold rappers).

but i digress....

If america doesnt start creating new methods of generating revenue in this country, like yesterday, then it is fukked.  And Im not too sure if the people in control, actually want to save this country.

I think moreso, theres a plan to destroy and rebuild.  Unfortunately, the average citizen is a pawn on the chess board, and have been taught to watch on the sidelines.  They do a very good job at this, and as BFG said, they got popcorn in hand, with "extra butter", watching the remake of the titanic...

A bomb hidden under a pile of garbage killed at least 20 people, half of them women who were sweeping the street in Somalia's capital, witnesses and doctors said Sunday.

The explosion and overnight attacks on military bases ended a brief period of relative calm that followed the signing of a peace deal between the government and the Islamic insurgency it is fighting. The agreement was already in jeopardy after the moderate cleric who signed it on behalf of the Islamic opposition movement was replaced by a hard-liner.

"I saw an old women who lost two legs and a hand, she was bleeding and later died before our eyes but we could do nothing as we ourselves needed help," Asha Ahmed, a 45-year-old woman who was wounded in the leg by shrapnel, told AP by phone from Medina hospital.

Dahir Dhere, the head of the hospital, said 47 wounded people were admitted -- mostly women and children -- and five died. Many were in critical condition, he said.

"We do not have enough doctors and enough operational theaters, it takes some time before all patients get access to emergency treatment," he said. "They are lying in the corridors, and some bled to death."

Hawa Aden, one of the women who survived from the explosion, said the device was hidden near an Ethiopian base on a main road often used by officials and may have detonated after a street cleaner attempted to shovel up the trash covering the bomb.

In a separate overnight attack, Islamic insurgents reportedly targeted the military bases of Somali government troops and their Ethiopian allies in north Mogadishu's Towfiq neighborhood, according to a witness.

Resident Mohamed Deq said he saw the bodies of three government soldiers lying in the street. Authorities did not return calls seeking comment.

Somalia has been at war since a group of warlords overthrew a socialist dictator in 1991 and then spent years fighting each other.

On Saturday, 10 of the U.N.-backed government's 15 ministers broke with the prime minister and announced they would resign.

Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein said Saturday that the resignations were designed "to derail the ongoing reconciliation process."

Whatsup LT.  I did read the article and it is in fact a very interesting one.

Reaffirms a lot of my beliefs.  One of which is that the Federal Reserve Bank (the private company that prints our bills) was effectively created to destroy the american economy, by making it feed off of its self.

No political party has been more essential in helping fulfill this mission, than the Republican party (check their track record).  Democrats certainly share blame as well, but its kind of like one party boils the water at a greater and much faster pace.

The democrats do a much better job at pretending to be a party promoting democracy than the republicans.  The republicans never said they would promote it, and blatantly  doesnt thru their consistency in supporting big business over the american publics best interest.

Right now, our country is in dept to China and Japan so greatly, that we should all probably start learning and practicing chinese and japanese and also their culture, because the generations to come will be slaves (in debt) to these two countries.  Throw Saudi Arabia in there somewhere also, because thru their investment strategies, they own a great deal of america as well.

The country (america) who has been known as the worlds super power, and also has been known as the worlds largest slave master, is now the worlds biggest hoe.  And naturally, the world doesnt have much empathy or sympathy for the new roman empire.

Our economy is feeding off of itself.  We are victims of our own philosophy (capitalism).  im not even sure if at this point, theres much we can do to save it.  The government entities cant even agree to disagree on the actual problem, let alone ignite a solution.

The author of the article, did offer some useful solutions.  Americans in their current ideological with never put those plans in to motion tho. Our values in this country are simply, "too fukked up", for lack of better terms.

Just look at the things we value.  Check the economical reports, and check which businesses flourish in this country, and that will tell you a great deal about the culture.

Just look into the african american community alone, and look at what is held at highest value.  Lets go deeper, look at hip hop.  Which artist sell the most? What are their messages?

People who say that the music isnt that influential on culture, are just brain masturbating.  African peoples for as long as they have been on this earth, have been heavily influenced by the music they produce and consume.

The music we produce, in large quantities, unfortunately is "bull shit" rapped in shiny gold wrapper.  (and shiny gold rappers).

but i digress....

If america doesnt start creating new methods of generating revenue in this country, like yesterday, then it is fukked.  And Im not too sure if the people in control, actually want to save this country.

I think moreso, theres a plan to destroy and rebuild.  Unfortunately, the average citizen is a pawn on the chess board, and have been taught to watch on the sidelines.  They do a very good job at this, and as BFG said, they got popcorn in hand, with "extra butter", watching the remake of the titanic...

You see different events being reported on CNN and you just know you are only getting bits and pieces of what's actually going on. Having of the info laid out for me leaves me a bit disillusioned. What really are we to do? I clearly see Obama as the lesser of two evils, but either president will inherit the financial woes of the previous. Neither of the two can reverse this madness right off so the president (whoever it may be) will be attacked for not working a miracle. 'Big business' or finance will always come before the nation which is sad. I have long sense agreed that the money that is being spent on this war would be of better use here. Fighting for others to have a chance at better life is a noble thing, but the expense is the lives of our troops and the breakdown of our own nation. I do realize I said 'better life' when I fully believe it was an oil issue.  The rebate checks WEREN'T enough with the sky-rocketing gas prices.  It's a sad cycle of the rich getting richer(The government in bed with Wallstreet).  I honestly wonder what life is going to be like for my daughter.

With that said, LT, I'm going to eat. I saw you the other day saying you were going to eat spaghetti and watch CNN. I had made spaghetti that same day for lunch  and sat down to CNN!!  I cracked up. Keep us informed, sus.

That's why I put that list up there "for the Panel". I apologize for missing "Boss Up" and "JjGreeniis" too. THEY ARE DEF'LY ON THE PANEL.
The Panel represents those who's post I read each and everytime I come in here. Even If I don't get to respond. I read them. Sometimes It's just for a much needed laugh. Or just to feel that fam feel that the majority have. This section is unique in that way. With that Panel list, It doesn't mean I expect everyone to roll out the scroll. It's just a way of letting those on it know, I value you opinions, whatever they are and that I'm always checking for ya. Or even that I realize your importance to this section.
Illseed is the Ruler. But he has quite a cast of subjects in here who really keep this Rumor section both entertaining and on point. Hence I do a shout out list daily. All members add something for me to enjoy or learn from.
Like I said before, I have not seen another section nor site for that matter which does that. Or that I come in shouting out folks. lmao
