HipHop is a form of Art! Which means to me it's has to have some basic elements with the artist own creative twist. Nas had Story telling. Jay Z did the same. Alright... so Nas saying Hip-Hop is dead regardless of his intentions is certainly a good thing. With this statement, he has sparked a conversation about Hip-Hop and it's current climate. Most young cats nowadaze only know what is fed to them via MTV, BET or some other corporate entity. Nothing more than rappin' minstrels are presented and consumed. To find real Hip-Hop now, you have to search it out and not rely on mass media. Back in the early days, you couldn't go to the mall, sit around in front of the television or search online for real Hip-Hop (although BET in the early days was everything and more w/ Donnie Simpson). You had to seek it out. Being from Louisville in '82, I had to go to the flea market and buy records from this guy from Tennessee. The point being, this culture is far from dead. "Hip-Hop is Dead" should be used as a tool for research and a reminder to filter out the garbage from what is real Hip -Hop culture. It's up to people who have been around since the early days to uphold and pass on the foundation to new generations. We also have a responsibility to listen to those who have come along after us and help bridge that gap. Nas's statement to me, at it's core, is a jumping point for discussion. Without this statement KRS & Marley Marl would not have done Hip Hop Lives. We wouldn't be discussing this topic or posting about if it did not have some sort of effect. But I have been drinking so what do I know.
