So boom in the fall Biggie's album came out and you know the first single was over the hit record Juicy. Which was already a hit.

But hey it was Biggie we ain't care.
Then Biggie's album cover had a picture of a baby biggie. they had bit off nas. bite means to copy someone else's shit, by the way.

Like if we breakin or poppin' and hit you wit some ill footwork then you take my shit across town and try to rep with that shit but ain't know my man julio was in the crowd watching, he gon scream out "you bitin"

then everyone gon start laughin at you cuz guess what?

So boom it don't stop ("cuz we won't stop" - Puff Daddy), in 95 with Biggie in the forefront, Puff hit us with the Atom Bomb: One More Chance remix. New beat: El Debarge jawn that some would say Rashad Smith bit from Lord Finesse. Cuz Lord Finesse freaked it first.

But he wasn't talking about Versace, Cartier and gators.

Under Puff, Biggie was.

Although Biggie's rhymes was ill - now doubt he could rip no matter the subject - the content of rhyming had changed.

So here we are in the summer of '96 and the door is open for anybody to come through who talking about being a player, having versace, cristal, or diamonds.

but dudes saw that and started to make their beats like him.

Jay-z connected with him.

Player-type crime rap connected with bubblegum beats equal a million records sold.

shit is ALL fucked up by now.

but wait, master p. comes out with silk the shocker.

biting (and disrespecting) eric b. and rakim's classic while rapping as simplistic as possible.

Capitalizing off the ignorance of their people, the "no limit" squad did that record, "UNNNHH" some other bullshit, dropped an album by a gimmicky bi-polar no rhyme skills cat named "mystikal" and cleaned up.

Cashing in on half a billion.

Now Juvenile saw it was easy so he makes one of the most embarassing songs I've ever heard from my people called "Ha"

So boom now here come the neptunes.

they make a few songs using the exact same drum pattern and clean up.

the rest is probably current enough for when you started to listen to hiphop.

I used to be a big fan of Jigga but he fell off the last 4 albums to me.
Only about 3 tracks on each album and maybe that number is high.

BUT, G-Rap and Kane didn't birth the Jigga we know.
That Jigga was Hawaiian Sophie Jigga and his name was Jay-Z, you remember, could be why Jaz-O (similarity?) had beef with Jigga a couple years back.

This Jay-Z is born out of the Biggie era, he didnt start soundin like this till he started kicking it with Biggie.

I never talk bad about Jay-Z 'cause I don't listen to him enough to care, but I just saw a video with him riding around in a Ferrarri and spinning around in a boat spittin' the same lyrics I've heard him spit on nearly every other track he does. I don't blame him though -- its the people who buy it that make what it is, what it is.

He's right about '94 -- that's right around when hip-hop flip flopped and became rap more than it was hip-hop. It was happening on the West Coast too -- Ice-T was getting political, Ice Cube was getting political -- but that got crushed by all that money talk. 'Pac held it down for a while, but even he walked that fine line between being a revolutionary and being a parody of a "thug" who only cared about "bitches and money". I see Ras Kass falling that way as well -- makes you wonder how many great lyricists we keep missing out on because of how much the rap "game" has been corrupted.

No more "Fight the Power" -- just ice, grills, spinners and gats.

for the sake of not starting anymore arguments i'll change it to top 4 RAP performances i've seen:

4. P. Diddy (Oct 2001 B96 Halloween Bash [for those of you from chicago, i know b96 is extremely lame but the lineup included Fabolous (right when he came out) and Afroman (who put on a good show too) & some R&B acts] - while i'm not and never have been a fan of his music he won me over by putting on a really good show... now this was right after 9/11 and he pulled out a big flag and got a USA chant going (so there was obviously some emotion involved) but still he did put on a good performance

3. Run DMC ( Q101 Jamboree 2001) - while Run DMC was extremely out of place at an alternative rock concert, and of course there was the fact that they were disrespected by being put on the 2nd stage and not the main one, they put on a really really good show. Now i wasn't into Run DMC at the time (and i'm still not really) they rocked the house. these white people were loving every minute of it too, they were moshing and all that. Regardless they brought it.

2. Twista (2005 Twista / Mike Jones show in milwaukee) - yes i jumped on the mike jones bandwagon when he came out (i actually saw him and paul wall perform in a Moo & Oink parking lot about 4 months before i went to this show) regardless of his lack of skills his cd was enjoyable (notice how i didn't say it was GOOD). MIKE JONES! WHO? actually put on a good show, however Twista had a ridiculous performance. You could hear understand every word he said and he performed the classics like Po Pimpin. at the time it was BY FAR the best rap concert i had ever been too (i did go to that Ca$h Money / Ruff Ryders concert back in 99 or 2000). But it only be surpassed by...

1. Weezy F. Baby (2007 Street Dreams tour in Milwaukee) - after dealing with 4 maybe even 5 garbage opening acts, Rich Boy came on and i didn't understand a word he said until Throw Some D's on it came on (even then the only reason i knew what he said was because i knew the words already), then Jim Jones put on a really good show. but then what i came to see a full set of Lil Wayne which was amazing, then he did almost another full set when Birdman came out. by this time i was falling down because i was so fucked up but i didn't wanna disrepect Wayne by sitting down during his set... however when Jeezy and USDA came on i couldn't help but sit my ass down. even though i was in my seat during most of the USDA performance it was good shit (because they did a lot off of Jeezy's solo CDs and not all that much USDA stuff). Going to this concert was BY FAR my best memory from 4 years of college.

I agree that rappers glorify selling drugs and hustling. I don't agree that it's clearly their last option. Actually, I do, I just think that some hustlers bypass all other options and get straight to the stove, or the corner. I've never sold drugs, I've always made legit money and my pops wasn't around, moms wasn't givin me shit but the roof over my head. I still had a car when I turned 16. I went to school with the kids who were making decent grades, and come junior year said "fuck it i'm gonna be a stick up kid." or "yo if you need that green just holla at me." "yo slim, I got that white." That was before they went and tried to find a legit job. You started hustlin at 16? There's no possible way you can begin to imagine how many options you have at that age. It's easy money, instant gratification. You been in school for 10 years, you got 2 left, and you're NOT gonna finish?There are people who do hustle as a last option, but those people aren't rapping. They're too busy hustling. They sure as hell aren't rapping about hustlin. Real hustlers don't need to brag about what they got, because you can tell when you see them.

Rappers are dry snitching on themselves. We wonder why so many people are getting locked up on drug charges and gun charges. Because your song on the radio about selling drugs and/or having guns is heard by just more than the hood. yeah man...I got friends who are lost causes where like fizzroy said it was like talkin to a brick wall. We're sittin at they house at 15 years old and they talkin about oh I'm not gonna go to school tomorrow. Fuck it. Bow Wow got famous when he was 12 and he suck. They got their mind made up that its hustlin or nothin.

I got friends now who were in the game and been out of school for 5 or 6 years talkin about I think I'm gonna go to VoTech (a vocational school) and get certified to be a mechanic. Or they wanna get their GED and go to community college. I don't know about everywhere else, but down here if you are enrolled in the public school system, you can apply to go to VoTech and the schoolboard will pay for it. All of it, 100%. Same thing with the colleges around here, with dual enrollment. When you graduate from the vocational program, they give you a graduation present. If you get certified as a barber/hair stylist, you get clippers and scissors and all that. If you leave as a mechanic you get a brand new set of tools. All for free. I got boys who graduated high school with a diploma and a certification comin out makin 50k a year. People from my high school graduated with a diploma and an associates degree. Now these dudes 5 years down the line talkin about "i needed the money what the fuck else was I gonna do?" Take ya ass to the movie theatre and get a job like everyone else at the school. Hit up McDonalds. You get paid shit, but guess what? FREE FOOD. as much as you want. all day every day. If you gotta feed the family, go cop yourself a job at a fastfood place, or a resteraunt and talk to the manager. Most managers gonna understand that if you're in school and you're really takin care of the fam like that, they'll hook you up.

As far as the rappers learnin to adapt, I think they're in a tough position, kinda. Their first CD drops and it's G shit, top to bottom. Go Platinum, get some money, move to the burbs. Cut all ties with stupid mother fuckers who aren't gonna do anything but get you in trouble. "I got money now, I'm tryin to keep it."

So I'm there and I ain't been around this many black people since I left the East Coast.

So I was happy.

By the way the screening was filled to the gills and ain't nuntin jump off.

Muvafuckas just laughin and havin a good time.

So this crazy thought was goin through my head as I'm listenin' and vibin' with everybody and I'm like

I mean like are black people from L.A. country?

When people from the Northeast travel around the nation there's this thing that you pick up when you meet people.

People from the Northeast have a self-imposed pressure to be trendsetters.

So when we meet someone we size up their fashion sense. Peep thier footwear first.

See if they have good decision making skills as it applies to picking out footwear.

Be it sneakers.

Gucci loafers.

Tims or whatever.

But that shit is an art.
But it also tells a person's lifestory.

And we also check something far more shallow:
We use our instincts to try and detect if a muvafucka is concerned about his or her "cool factor". Like if a person is cognizant about being cool and in control.

Now country people don't give a fuck about none of that shit.

And when northeasters sniff that out then they are like "ohhh okay, this a country muvafucka right here."

Like a couple of those tacky hairstyles.

Then of course you got the drawl or the accents.

Black people from L.A. got heavy accents.

I handle a lotta of other stuff.

Well I always find myself trying to defend middle America or anywhere but L.A. and N.Y.

Because see this is where the studios and networks are.

And here is where we feed popularity to the rest of the nation.

Now if you notice, all the shows and films always portray more or less coastal and not middle american characters.

Never "country" characters.

In fact, they make fun of county characters. They are always the heel.

Like they are backwoods rednecks or something.

So I've been going to bat for just and even portrayals.
Because I feel that coastal characters don't accurately reflect the makeup of this country.

It only reflects the viewpoint of the creators of the content because we are usually coastal people.

But in reality?

This is really a "country" nation.

It's not just L.A. and N.Y.

It's wyoming.
idaho.
montana.
missouri.
wisconsin.
and of course memphis tennesee.

So I'm watching all the videos and I'm listening to some because all weren't videos.

And I started thinking about my philosphy for features and TV about how people try to ostracize the country folk when in actuality the Unites States IS country.

So I was saying to myself maybe black people are a country-ass people.

Because, the midwest, the west, the south even western PA like pittsburgh all that's considered "country".

And I refrained from commenting on the whole TI thing but the week before last, when they had lil wayne's mugshot up, I felt a lil sinking feeling in my stomach.

Cuz even tho I 'ont fuck with his entertainment product I 'ont wanna see him knocked.

I say this all the time: I'll pop shit every day all day about a down south entertainer but if I'm driving down the turnpike or 95 and the cops is whoppin on lil john's or lil wayne's ass then I'm jumpin out and we rumblin the punk police to the death.

Our squabbles about tastes in music are just that.

Squabbles.

Saturday morning backyard slapbox bouts.

But even tho I don't fuck with TI, I just don't wanna see the misfortune of one of my own.

So anyway after listening to the Eightball and MJG, I started reevaluating the market for this product.

Assuming this is a "country" nation.
And the majority of my people here probably are "country".

I don't know what to make of my reevaluation just yet.

I know one thing, it really made the core classic hip hop fans seem extremely exclusive.

Like a select few.

Of course it made me appreciate the foundation that was laid even more.

But I'm grappling with the new language I'm learnin.

That's probably the key right there.

These is my people.
And this is their langauge.

It's funny cuz it's like I'm learnin something extremely fundamental here.

So I noticed that the sound on the tracks you sent me are on some laid back either sampled or replayed curtis mayfield shit.

I bet y'all probably call that "pimp" shit, right?
I can hear it now.

Not saying I IDed any samples as Curtis Mayfield. But you know what I'm talking about as far as the tempo is concerned?

I'll put it like this..It's a reason why certain rappers stood out in the South like UGK, Eightball and MJG, and Outkast..When all of those groups first dropped down they brought a different flavor to what we were brought up hearing from our southern artist..Everything before them was booty shake, bounce or some form of dance music..The groups I mentioned music was appealing because most of us grew up off of the tracks they sampled through our parents. Factor that in with the way they painted the picture of what was going on in the streets and that was an instant classic down south..You had other guys that did it but not in the same way..The formulas they used when they dropped brought on movements down here..We looked forward to them niggaz albums like everybody do 50 now..I forgot about the Geto Boyz but UGK and Ball and G did it with no marketing and just off the strength of their talent at the time..They were going gold just off word of mouth..

Tiny, who was arrested on marijuana and Ecstasy possession on Saturday, took King to visit his father in jail yesterday. I'm told the first thing T.I.P. did was apologize to Tiny.

My source informed me that King is still traumatized from the raid which took place at T.I.'s home in College Park on Saturday. ATF agents simultaneously broke down the front door while smashing out windows in the back of the house and tossing stun grenades into the house. King, 3, was in a downstairs room playing at the time of the raid. The other children had just left the home to go to acting class. I'm told T.I.'s 15-year-old nephew ran out the back door and was tackled and stomped by ATF agents.

While agents found T.I.'s gun collection in his bedroom safe, no drugs were found in the home. Many have questioned why T.I. had such an arsenal in the first place. The answer is simple: boys love guns. My brother, Ray, has been an avid gun collector since his teens so I have no problem believing that. My brother obtained his license to carry a concealed weapon at the age of 18. He quickly amassed a collection of guns much larger than T.I.'s collection. Today, my brother, who never attended college, owns a GNC store in Dunnedin, Florida (a suburb of Tampa). My brother has never shot anyone.

It's easy to question why T.I. was buying machine guns and silencers, but what gun collector (my brother included) doesn't own a machine gun? It doesn't mean they intend to start a war. I imagine it would be difficult for a boy like T.I. to turn down the chance to own a machine gun. It doesn't make him a bad person.

Family friends state the bodyguard, whose initials are C.W., had a license to purchase certain weapons legally and offered to purchase guns for T.I. from the moment he started working for T.I. in July. That should have been a red flag. The family source said T.I. is not doing well in federal custody. "This is very hard on T.I.P.," said the source.

Lot of intelligent dialogue going on in here. Had to get on one of my true knowledge/ student mentality moments. Fell back, read, and learned.

Couple things stood out to:

Black People 1's tear on the Seans. I found it interesting that nobody came to the aid of Puff (rightfully so). Wow Puff, you really dug a whole in the community.

Gawga's rep for the south. The south should be proud. Heres a guy that can support south music and break things down in a fashion that east and west coast guys can understand. And not just hope that by repeatedly saying "Quit Hatin the Souf" that hopefully somebody will listen.

Speakin of, Im going to South Carolina the end of the week. Lil sis just had a baby down there. Miss my peeps. Im where north and south collides (move over weezy and juelz). Philly/SC connection, gotta respect it.

Jay-Z isn't the greatest emcee ever, but he has some good shit. Some of you guys hating Jay-Z... ehh whatever man. You're entitled to your opinion, but stop acting like he never put out any good music, none of it has meaning. Kingdom Come was hot and it was sophisticated, and it flew over a lot of heads. He was really breakin shit down on some of that album. Plus Blueprint has some deep shit, even The Dynasty Roc La Familia album. Black album had some substance too. I'm not gonna write a fucking 500 word essay on here, but check the catalogue man. Jay-Z has dropped some substantial shit and is definitely one of the greatest rappers of all time, and he should be in the top 20 list of anyone's greatest emcees, I feel. Damn. You make it seem like Jay-Z is just as bad as Yung Joc or Diddy or some shit. Take it easy.
