If they made Nicky Barnes look like a flunky in "American "Gangster" then the story is extra Hollywood and wrong as hell. Nicky Barnes was big time back in the days. He sold heroin and they put him on the cover of the New Yorker and did like a 2 or 3 page interview with him back when he was still sellin' dope. Him, Frank Lucas and Guy Fisher(The Council) each had their own territory and soldiers but all followed a certain code. I always thought they were on the same level since Nicky Barnes had his own Colombian connect.

Leroy Barnes was sent to prison in 1965 for low level drug dealing. While in prison he met Colombo crime family member Joe "Crazy Joey" Gallo. It is believed Gallo passed on his knowledge of how to run a drug trafficking organization to Barnes and asked Barnes to assemble the necessary personnel. With a lawyer provided by Gallo, Barnes' conviction was over turned and he returned to New York City. Once home Barnes began to assemble his personnel and began cutting and packaging low-quality heroin. By 1976 Barnes' operation spread throughout all of New York State and into Pennsylvania and Canada. According to DEA records, Barnes operation in 1976 consisted of seven lieutenants, who each controlled a dozen mid level distributors, who then supplied upwards of forty street level dealers each. It is during this time in which Barnes was given the name Mr. Untouchable, after successfully beating numerous charges and arrests. It is believed while under surveillance Barnes would often make pointless stops and go on high speed chases with little purpose other then to aggravate those following him.

At the height of his dealing Barnes' net worth was estimated at several million dollars. Barnes setup front companies to protect some of his assets, such as his numerous cars which appeared to be rented through those companies instead of directly owned. The DEA eventually discovered the true ownership of the companies and seized the owning numerous cars including a Mercedes-Benz, a Citroën-Macerate, several Thunderbirds, Lincoln Continentals, and Cadillacs. A New York Times article estimated Barnes had purchased approximately 300 suits, 100 shoes, and 50 leather coats."[\I]

The Town goes hard and i agree about the hyphy music/scene. it is imo a way lightening up the heaviness of life out here, at the same time it is a form of rebellion. now add to that, that it is really being misperceived and used as a stereotype of Oakland lifestyle.

speakin of hyphy music, two youngstas in group came in last night with their music video. in all honesty that shit went hella hard!!!!!!!!! they got the hyphy look, but not the typical flow or sound. and for 16 & 17-year-olds it was rather professional, didn't look all low-budget or nothing. i'm proud of them. they said they gon' post it on youtube so when they do, i'ma post the link for everybody.

So this past weekend I played my mp3 cd of all Nas' albums and I was trying to figure my favorit track

I wanna share something with you.

Far too often (especially in the hood) debates go on forever without clear lines of communication being established. No one stopping to listen. People just waiting to talk.

And at other times, arguments fester because someone may be privy to some info and never had a chance to share it before things spiral out of control (very sitcomish).

In fact, (as I'm sure many of us have seen in the hood) I've seen two muvafuckas start off arguin' about one thing and end up fightin' over somethin' else.

Listen.

This is not about coasts or regions.

It's about the quality of the product.

The product being Hip-Hop music.

Sometimes old people are afraid of the youth, because in some cases the young do eat the old. And information maybe the only thing that the old can cling to.

And in a debate, the old accuse the young of ignorance because the young are uninformed about events that pre-date their birth or whatever's currently popular.

But how can the young know something if they are never told?

I learned one of my most valuable lessons in life from Isaac Hayes.

He said, "Young people have to express themselves."

That's like the truest shit I ever heard.

Now if a young person never battled a tape of Big Daddy Kane's "Set It Off" vs. Rakim Allah's "Lyrics Of Fury", if he never heard these songs, he still must express himself.

But most of these arguments stem from lack of knowledge and communication.

Let me lay everything out for you.

Hip-Hop music (key word MUSIC) is comprised of 3 primary elements: Rhymes, Scratching, and Beats.

True it all started in NY. But WHERE wasn't as important as WHAT.

WHAT did they start?

The first thing they started was diggin in a crate for an old or obscure record (goin to the store and buying one more) finding what is called a "break" -- that is when the singing stops and core of the music rocks for like say five seconds -- making this break repeat by either cutting up a duplicate of the record on a turntable or plugging the break into a sampler creating a beat.

The next thing they did was rhymed over the beat. But to earn the right to rock the mic, your rhymes had to be creative.

You couldn't jump on stage and be off beat. You couldn't grip the mic with ABC-rhymes like "I'm gettin' money. Ain't nuntin' funny. I'm a OG. That's how it be."

An emcee's job was to be creative with his rhymes.
And on the heirarchy of rhymes, the list is somewhat as follows:

1. Complexity (how many words or phrases are you rhyming?)

2. Delivery (how are you saying your rhymes?)

3. Creativity/Originality (are you freakin' what you are doing in a unique way?)

Stuff like this is sorta unspoken. But it is understood. It's more or less sold but never really told. Dig what I'm sayin'?

Now in 86 and 87 when Eric B. and Rakim came out, Rakim kinda single-handedly changed what serious emceeing was all about.

Super-complex, creative rhymes moved to forefront. And by the time Long Live the Kane was released, dope rhyming was forever changed.

Now for most of the folks that you hear screaming East Coast, East Coast this is the vital history that is always kept in mind.

This is how it was started and it was the tradition. Every emcee that came out had to show and prove his abilty utter interesting rhymes on the microphone (also called "skills"), from Special Ed to NAS.

Just ask The Alkaholiks -- "Used to be about rhymes, all about rhymes..." I Got It Bad Y'all circa '92. and they are straight from Cali.

Most Hip-Hoppers weren't born yesterday and they didn't start banging hip hop when Jay-z came out.

I'd strongly recommend that some you bruvas take a quick musical vacation into some of the early, more premium hip-hop that preceded the Urban Pop that you defend so passionately.

It really is a short history and the journey will be so much fun. Not to mention the new world of music that you'll expose yourself to.

To help you get started, I've come up with a list of the records you should get to help you appreciate this beautiful artform.

(Arranged by order of importance)

1. By Any Means Necessary - BDP
2. Long Live The Kane - Big Daddy Kane
3. Paid in Full - Eric B. & Rakim
4. Follow the Leader - Eric B. & Rakim
5. It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
6. Goin Off - Bizmarkie
7. People's Instinctive Travel's - A Tribe Called Quest
8. Enter the 36th Chambers - Wu-Tang Clan
9. Illmatic - NAS
10.Mecca And The Soul Brother - Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth

I'm not saying these are they top ten albums of all time.

I'm not saying that at all.

But purchasing these records in this order will help you appreciate what has been come to be known as Real Hip-Hop.

Operative word:purchase.

A different level of respect is had for a possession when you purchase it as opposed to downloading it. But that is in a later lesson.

I think Sweden or Switzerland is supposed to have the best health care in the world. If you are not in a life threatening situation here you could be waiting for up to 8 hours for care at the emergency room. We are rapidly moving towards a two-tier private/public system. Rich people don't like to wait in line for stuff. Also it is harder to keep good doctors because the private system in the US pays better. Alot of our doctors here are from Africa or India, though we have some of the best medical schools in the world, our graduates go where the money is. There is a severe shortage of doctors here, most general practitioners are not taking new patients and there is a shortage of women's doctors, making it harder for women to get information about their health regularly.

I hate when my race (black people) say all black people do this or all black people do that. It's silly to me. I was at a friends house for dinner and the meats were roast and pigfeet. I chose the roast, instead of the pigfeet. My friend's family look at me crazy, talking about "Why you don't eat pigfeet? all black people eat pigfeet." It made me feel like i'm not black enough because i don't like a certain meat that the majority of black folks eat.

From my experience In the UK with Socialised Medicine its a bit of an up and down thing. On one hand its great knowing that if i'm sick I can see a doctor and I will be treated but on the other hand lots of ppl hv to worry about WHEN they get that treatment. like waiting for surgeries etc it all comes down to management of services and funding. In well managed health authorities your care will be great but some areas are poorly managed and that leads to under funding and poor care which is frustrating as hell.

yeah man that shit is bad. I dont have any health insurance, and haven't had any for about 3 years. Luckily I haven't even had to go to the doctor, much less have an emergency in that time. I know that if I have to go to the hospital for any reason, I'm fucked. I had pneumonia last year and didn't go to the doctor because I couldn't afford it. I just trusted that it would go away, just not as fast as it would with medicine. It did go away, after about a month and a half..didn't help that I was still having to work 6 days a week during that whole time, but yeah it's twisted.

I think a lot of people sleep on Black Thought as an MC because they have never seen him live in concert. The Roots always put on a great show and Black Thought might be one of the best live MCs. I've seen The Roots 3 times in concert. The most recent time I saw them they were opening for Dave Matthews Band(never been a huge fan but dude puts on a good show), BlackThought came out and was rapping on a song with Dave and had the crowd going crazy, feeling every verse. And this was a crowd predominantly of people that had no idea who The Roots were.

during my many phases growing up I became Muslim, and I wouldnt touch pork with a 10 foot pole.
I've read all of the Quran and I was into the religion (this is prior to my epiphany on religion of course) but I didn't touch anything pork related.

It got so bad that I would look on the back of products and look for pork related ingredients. I grew up eating pork but it wasn't hard for me to say no cuzz I was doing it in the name of religion.

What I took from the Quran was the main reason for not eating it was because of the nature of the animal and the bacteria in it.
Back then it was harder to cook pork so they would get sick because you couldn't "cookout" the bacteria.

Now a days we can cook pork the right way but even so, pork takes longer to cook than most meats.

So it's not that Pork is some messed up meat and you will go to hell or get sick if you eat it.
But it was more so for the era and time when it was harder to prepare the meat.

Needless to say I am no longer religious and will and do fuck me some Pork up quicker den a mugg! lol.

My boys laugh at me for eating and one of my homies swear he will go blind if he eats pork.

I just find it funny that people worry about pork but, Drink to get drunk, smoke weed and ciggs, do drugs, have unprotected sex...BUT NOOOOO POOOOORK....NO WAY! LOL

But I respect everyones opinions
I hate Roast...and most people say Im crazy...but that shit is nasty to me.

wow! there are people out there who don't know who Quik is? now that's amazing and ridiculous (on their parts). Sugarfree is alright, i haven't really tripped off of him since he 1st came out. he's a little to pimperish for me these days, if that's still his frame of reference.

i feel what u sayin about pork. the holy books are based on a historical context and written by man. it was a way of protecting the masses. but at this point in time, it no longer applies the same way.

me, personally, the man who so-called raised me was a Muslim (but not N.O.I.). so we didn't have any kind of pork in our house as i was growing up. not til they broke up when i was like 12. one day it was some ham (for sandwiches) in the fridge. i was like, "what is this?!?!?!?" and it was good! but i never really developed an overall taste for pork, i guess due to my upbringing. i eat it sometimes but only certain kinds, and even then the actual taste of the meat itself is not very appealing to me.

i'm an extremely picky eater anyway tho, so...

that sounds a lot like what we were taught in school, which was the "power essay" which is made up of "powergraphs" instead of paragraphs.

Now a power essay is something they started to teach us in like the 4th grade to boost writing portions of standardized testing, so as I got older I realized it was all for the birds because 'a power essay should be 5 paragraphs long with each paragraph containing 4-6 sentences. BUT it did help me in organizing my thoughts, mostly because of the pre writing we were taught.

The structure of a basic power essay is:

Intro
opening sentence
topic discussed in body paragraph 1
topic discussed in body paragraph 2

Like:

Grilled cheese sandwiches are the best kind of sandwhiches. The first step is to butter the bread, and toast it on the stove. Next, you put the cheese on the bread and another piece of buttered bread on top of that. Once the side is toasted to perfection, you flip it over and do the same thing to the other side. When finished, the grilled cheese sandwich clearly shits on all other sandwiches. ( it doesn't but I just made a grilled cheese sandwich, which are awesome when you're drunk)

and so on, through 3 body paragraphs, then the conclusion paragraph is basically the intro thought for thought, just with a thesaurus to change the words.

Sorry I got off track, but I'm a little drunk right now, but fuck it.

Like I said the pre writing is what helped me out more than anything once I got to high school and had to write longer papers. Because the powergraph keeps your thoughts organized, but it was taught that you shouldn't veer off the 4-6 sentence format.

Here's what my prewriting would look like for a topic of hip hop (note: just an example and of course, would have a lot more to talk about, but just to keep it relatively short here)

Opening Sentence: Hip hop is more than just music, it's a lifestyle.

Topics
1. Emceeing
rapping
rhyme pattern
metaphors and similes
lyrical content
censorship
legendary MCs and rappers

2. Dancing
the break beat
break dancing
the introduction of dance rap music
commercialism of dance rap music
the present day dominance of dance rap music

3. Production
scratching
use of the synth and keyboard
innovation of using outside sounds
drum machines
the structure of a song
recording and mastering a track

4. Cultural aspects
the language used
graff artists
clothes
entreprenuership

Conclusion

Now, if you have that in front of you, and you get to writing, you can look up and go 'oh ok, I wanted to talk about different rhyme patterns next. So you write about rhyme patterns until you convey your point. Then move down to the next one. It gives you breathing room because you can get goin and go off on a tangent, but look at your pre writing and bring you back to where you wanted to go with it. That will keep your thoughts organized enough and fluent enough to read.

hey..I aint mean to ignore your question the other day about the contender, and I just remembered, my bad.

Jaidon looked fierce. The ref was right for stopping the fight because like they said, he didn't have his legs. Thats test number 1, is to just push the fighter and if he's stumblin at all you gotta call it. Someone could get killed otherwise, like a wobbling target like in fight night when they get in that woozy shit. Just waiting to get put on the floor.

The 2nd semi final fight I think will probably be the best BOXING MATCH of the tourney. It sucks too, because Bika hates Sam Soliman and I want him to come out tryin to knock him out, but he comes off as too smart a fighter to do that. He's gonna stick to the game plan, and we'll see if he can counter Sam's funky ass style

yeah man, I been thinkin about that..I know I should put together a writing portfolio and take it down to the news paper down here and just have it be so good that they can't do shit BUT hire me. That way I can save up enough money to get a degree in jounalism and take it to a national level, espn type shit.

But yeah, that's most def me writing those football wrap ups. I'm not about taking someone else's work, same way I would be pissed if I saw someone jacked what I wrote and put it up without puttin a written by or word to bigslim on it

Also Profit101 has been talkin about starting up a site and I've contacted him about writing there. I've never done a blog, so I dont even know how to start one or anything like that. Any suggestions on a site to get it started on?
