At the end of the day Jay-Z got longevity, and despite the way he does does it, it works for him. No matter what you think about another man, you have to know what works for you. So I can critique Jay's approach, but I am still always 100 on my own approach. A lot of these rappers like DMX were not 100 on their own approach and fell by the way side. Puffy is a sharp business man but he was never really a rapper.

As far as dude talking about Frank Lucas. Yeah Frank is a character, but the thing is this. I received quite a few messages about who was bigger than Rayful in DC and I am not going to answer that. Let's just say Ray didn't actually make 70 million a month, the FEDS trumped the charges up on him. They never caught Ray doing anything, he was the first victim of those Drug Kingpin laws, Rico, and Conspiracy charges. They estimated his net worth based on the retail value of what they thought a Kilo would go for at the time.

Ray said that he only had around 40 million cash at any given point in time. Ray was a wholesaler not a retailer, that is why the FEDS numbers were all blown up. He moved a lot of weight, but it was dirty cheap. That is how DC got the reputation for being a wholesale market that was rivaling the south. Cats from up north didn't have to go all the way to Florida to get it cheap. He only sold coke, mainly crack. He didn't have an "organization", he had a distribution network. Cats used to try and rob him all the time, he was paying dudes to drop bodies and that is why he was so hot. He used to ride around the city in Limos, Jags, Porsche's. Now here is the history lesson. DC has been in the drug game for decades, you think a 25 year old who got put on by his father when he was 18 and got his connect when he was like 21 or 22 was the biggest negro doing it? He only had a 5 or 6 year run. Not everybody is flashy and care about the fame. If I asked you who was running the AFO now that Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix was sentenced to life, could you name him? Did you even know who Francisco Javier Arellano-Felix was until now that he is caught? See that is my point, so dude talking about Frank is lying because he was not known sounds suspect to me. He sounds like your average negro. That is why I respected Frank when he apologized and said he did it all wrong. He should have quit while he was ahead, but hindsight is 20/20. Cats today still think it's about the flash when it's not.

I saw another longer video of Jay Z and DMX battling on Youtube before but now I can't find it. I don't know if it is THE battle that Dame Dash was talking about but the recording was really bad (sound was okay but the camera was really jerky) as if some dude was recording the event on the 'downlow'.

Jay would spit a verse... then DMX would spit a verse... just back and forth like that. Rhymes were dope but there was no way they were off the top of the dome...

For the record, Jay Z spits some rhymes, writes them down or records them, reworks them, tightens them up, adds different sections to each other to make longer verses, memorizes them, and then spits out the finished product. If you think he is spitting those rhymes off the top of his dome completed then you probably also think that Tupac and Left Eye are alive and chillin' out somewhere on a beach in Cuba...

If money isn't a problem "Pro Tools" is the industry standard for sequencing and recording. You can use "Reason" or "Q-Logic" to make the beats they've got huge sound libraries and "Cool Edit Pro" or "Sound Forge" can be used for mastering. Hopefully that helps you out.

I think people confuse not writing something down, with freestyling. Just because you dont physically write the rap down, doesnt mean you spit off the top. I Seldomly write raps on paper, you just memorize them. Mainly because i lose shit to often,and it kinda forces you to memorize them. Also, you can spit in the booth holding a note pad, it comes off whack or without feeling mostly. Some will freestyle a track, when they mess up, the rewind the track and get punched in. You still off the dome, just not all the way through with out mistakes. Basically there are so many ways people record, when people hear "i dont write raps down" they automatically assume they "freestyle" everything

Ya'll getting crazy with all this off the top of the dome and shit. When Jay-Z says that he steps in the booth and does shit in one take he means he's already got the song done in his head. He just steps in the booth and does the whole song in one shot. Event then he still got ad libs and shit to do. So he has to go back in and put the finishing touches on the song. I think the whole idea about people doing songs off the top of the dome is just fans being naive (if i spelled it right). And then, a freestyle usually consists of a verse already written or whatever the case might be that someone just spits over any beat that someone put for them. Some of ya'll still need Rap 101 classses. But most of ya'll i'm pretty sure knew all this. So that's why i wonder why people talk about all this like its one of life's great mysteries.

Forgot to add...Yes, some do spit off the top of the dome. But that's usually where the best lines come out from. Even then you still gotta polish it up. You can clearly tell when someone is spitting off the top, cause u can almost notice them looking for the next punchline while there rhyming. But not too many people are good to the point where they can do this and it comes out smooth.

That new Ye' video for Good morning is crazy...really diggin' the animation style...i've been a big anime fan for years now and it's good to see that style getting some love finally...

TI freestylin' is not hard to believe cuz it's not like he's spittin' the formula for anthrax or something...his style is fairly easy to rock off the top or on paper...
this generation of hip-hop got their definition of "freestyle" tainted by those wack ass 106 and park battles...

I was at the Hova concert, and after Weezy and Jay did Hello Brooklyn, Weezy did the hook from duffle bag boys for about 16 bars. After the set, Weezy said, and I will quote, "Best rapper alive...", while pointing to Jay, and "...Next rapper in line!", while pointing to himself.

In other notes, Jay officially announced Jadakiss as the newest member of the Roc. Kiss appeared upset with Green Lantern because the only song he had on was Benjimans, which he didn't want to perform, and The Champ, which he didn't remember the words to. After the awkward back and forth with Green Lantern, Kiss just said throw Roc Boys on, which Jay previously interupted to bring him out. In defense of Kiss, he seemed High as a kite. Great show all around though. Can't wait to hear what Kiss has in plan for his next album ,and the Lox.

people confuse freestyling with actually writing raps, even if its not written on paper. if someone has a decent memory, then writing raps in ur head is possible. i believe t.i doesn't write raps down(being that he really isn't the most lyrical dude).i used to think it was crazy when jay kept repping about not writing raps down so i tried it. i don't even consider myself a rapper, but when i do make up raps, i dont write shit down. rather it is 16 bars or 48 bars. i aint write a rap down in over a year. its just about practicing it. the more u do something, the better u get at it. the only downside to not physically writing down raps is that u might forget a lot of shit. but if its that good, u wouldn't forget it in the first place.

I dont see the point of not writing down your lyrics. Biggie also didnt write down allot of his lyrics which is where Jay Z got it from and Ja Rule got it from Jay Z. The difference is Jay Z talks about it I dont recall Biggie talking about it at all but I could be wrong. Writing raps is still writing and I think you take away from your thoughts and the craft when you dont write down your lyrics. Especially the people that do it cause their favorite rapper says he does it.
Freestyles in the booth are 1 thing even getting some lines together which I do all the time and record them into a voice recorder. Its all about preference but I think writing the whole song in your head and spitting it and not giving it the polish it needs does not work or the quality is diminished. Funny how allot of young rappers are proclaiming they dont need the pen and paper and their raps sound like they need a co-writer.

i gotta say Pac has the best catalogue (pre-death). cause it's like every album he had, shit every song to me, was the shit. i can't think of anything by Pac that gets no play.

as far as his image, i think he was chameleon. he had an excellent ability to adapt to his surroundings. he was a true artist, and he evolved and developed into what he became based upon circumstances specific to his life.

have anybody ever saw "Bastards of the Party?" it's a documentary about the Crips & Bloods. basically on the origins and the evolution gangbangin.

the point was that the Crips and Bloods developed out of the dismantle-ment, if that's a word, of the BPP.

so if u think about Pac's family legacy, it makes sense that as a member of the next generation, he would be attracted to thug life, gangbangin, etc. and even more so after he got super famous, made some poor decisions, and began to be vilified. not to mention the rage behind his attempted murder.

anyway back to the point, i have heard the argument that Black men were conditioned during slavery into being the "Buck." and so they are incapable of being faithful to one woman. this is coming from people that agree with what ur friend was saying.

but i actually don't know how i feel about that. cause i do believe that their has definitely been long lasting implications from slavery that manifest today. i just don't think that is really one of them.

***side note: my girl just wrote her Master's Thesis on Post-Traumatic Slavery Syndrome. but i haven't got a chance to read it yet. i think i just got inspired!

I think it's more to do with the individuals she deals with. The fact that she happens to fuck with black guys who cheat on her would make her think. Same way if a girl fucks with only latin guys or white guys or asian guys who cheat on her, what else is she supposed to think?

I don't think it has as much to do with getting caught, becaue 99% of the time you end up getting caught. Whether she tells you or not is a whole nother story. I been cheated on a girl and thought I got away with it. We broke up on on friendly terms and then a year later I find out she knew the whole time.

As I stated before I don't think it's the case, but culture may have a minor (if not more) role in it.

If one is raised around a certain environment then he or she may take on some of those teachings.

If you grew up around pimps and ho's then your opinion about relationships could stray from the social norm.

But that is neither a ethnic trait nor a class trait.

Like I told BFG, I can and am currently faithful and I aint just saying that cuzz she's in the room lol.
but it is mos def harder for men than women.

If I'm right (BFG) women are more interested in being monogamous. They have more feeling attached and will only step out if they feel like they aren't getting what they want.

Men on the other hand have been taught to "creep" around since we was lil shorties. And we in most cases always want to fuck somebody else and it got nothing to do with feelings.

But we have to make a more conscious effort to remain faithful than women do.

That's why women should recognize that and give a faithful dude a little more appreciation for keeping his dick in his pants.
It's not as easy for us women so make sure you give your man what he needs and keep him happy.

I agree with your perspective on cheating, much people make absolute statements like "all black men" and "all white men" but generalization is too broad and incorrect. It depends on the individual about cheating, environment and social norms/friendship does play a big influence on the cheating factor. For folks on here to make such interesting statements like, I won't cheat if I was with beyonce, christian milan, kelly rowland (illseed :=) , etc would blantly disregard the person and soley conclude that people cheat only because of the sexual attraction and not taking other factors such as personality, emotions, moral fiber etc. Don't put people on pedestals because eventually that gets old. Cheating is subjective and each person is responsible for their own action.

the structure of a 106 park battle is severely flawed...since when does a freestyle champ need a week to prepare for his/her next opponent? this allows for less freestyle and more written material to enter the contest...any lunch room, street corner, alley way, or dorm room battle will not have 3 celebrity judges or a screaming crowd of teenagers to cheer them on....

then the actual rules of the battles are corny...any emcee knows that anything goes in a freestyle battle...(real heads know that it's just a battle of words and nothing to get beat down over)

you can't censor a freestyle battle, that's like surfing the net with a 56k modem...your just not getting the whole and INTENDED experience...again, once you start adding rules you start closing the window on how expressive you can be (and to be real, most teenagers are not trying to here that they can't rhyme without cursing) so instead, they just pre-write some material and fill in the blanks with their challengers name once they get on the show...you can tell when cats have writtens especially when the mess up and restart by saying the SAME LINES AGAIN...

Imma have to co-sign what BFG and Boss Up said. I've only dated black men so I couldn't tell you about another ethnicity (sp?) dating style. I think the whole player state of mind mentality comes from where you grew up and how you grew up. I grew up watching my dad chase behind a lot of women, and he still does. You would think that once you get a certain age, that shit would stop and you would want to settle down, but as I look at my pops, that shit aint happening. So I look at him, and try my hardest not to end up in a relationship with a man like my dad. Don't get me wrong, I love him and all that good shit, but I refuse to be in a relationship with a man of that stature.

It is hard to be faithful in relationships because temptation is a motherfucker and so is lust. But it can be done. It takes some will power. And There are some guys out there who are willing to be faithful. The few guys I've dated have been so far, (or they hid it very well) but for the most part, I think they've been faithful. Here's my thing, if you know you are going to cheat, why not just end the relationship?

What's funny is that, a lot of these girls know what they getting into when they pick some of these guys. I guess they feel as though they can change them, and sometimes that shit works, but majority of the time it doesn't. They know this is the "playa" type of guy, but yet they still want to get with him, but then get mad when she see him with another women. I know a couple of girls like that now, and, for lack of better words, they are some dumb ass bitches.

i think it is def. a learned behavior for both men and women, based on examples that were set for them.

This whole not writing down your rhymes argument is getting me heated. Time for some Hiphop 101 education...

A true 'freestyle' is lyrics off the top of the dome. See cats like Craig G. in a freestyle battle and then compare that to when he forms a song with a set number of bars and a hook. They are two totally different styles. Sure, in a freestyle you often pull in punchlines you've had floating around in your head from before the actual battle but, in a true freestyle, if your lyrics sound written then your opponent will clown you and an educated hiphop crowd will boo you off the stage. For all the young pups on here, '106 and Park' Freestyle Friday has little or nothing to do with the classic hiphop freestyle battle.

An artist will often come up with something clever during a freestyle or a cypher or a jam session or wildin' out in a recording booth that he didn't even know he was going to spit before he spit it. He'll then take that hot line or lines or that hot concept or idea and then use it somewhere else or combine it with something else until he eventually forms a complete song. There are various examples of this but one artist who comes to mind is Eminem who often combines the best verses from freestyles he has done to create a complete song.

All the great hiphop legends when I grew up (the 80s) were basically modern day poets. People like KRS-ONE, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, etc. etc. all bragged about there rhymebooks and the craft of perfecting their 'poems'. That is not to say that they couldn't rock a cypher but those were usually 'put your hands in the air and wave them like you just don't care' rhymes whereas their songs were well crafted poems about things like empowerment and the upliftment of Africa.

The problem I have with artists like Jay Z claiming that they don't write down their lyrics is that they are implying that songs like 'D-evils' is coming off the dome in one take like they are some sort of superhuman robot. There is no way that a highly constructed song with multi-syllabic rhymes and concepts is coming out in one take. Bullshit...bullshit...bullshit.

If you watch the documentary about Jay Z and the 'Black Album' there is even proof that backs up my argument. Clever editing shows Jay Z listening to Timberland's beat for 'Dirt Off My Shoulder' and going 'Eureka!' when he sees Timmy's dance where he sweeps 'dirt' off his shoulder. Next, it cuts to the booth where Jay Z is rhyming over the beat with the hook 'get that dirt off my shoulder'. Now listen to the lyrics he spits for a couple of seconds... they are totally different lyrics then the ones that appear on the album. Obviously, he spent several sessions in the booth before he came up with the completed product. Did he write down the lyrics? Maybe not... but if you just keep rhyming lyrics you have already thought of in the past and combine them all together like a giant jigsaw puzzle then what the hell is the difference?

Perhaps if Jay Z 'wrote' more of his lyrics on paper, then he wouldn't be liberally 'borrowing' so many lyrics that he heard from other emcees.
