Have you read or heard about the Black community in El paso (I think) that got burned down by the jealousy of others back in like the 20's.. B*Braze had put up a link to the website..

Anyway what I thought was major in the reading of it is how many times the Black dollar changed hands within the community before it left..

That's what we need to do. there are other races that still do it to this day.. When I was growing up I couldn't for the life of me understand how these Armenian cats had all this money.. But that's exactly what they do in Pasadena, Glendale and Hollywood.. They Buy from their own and that keeps their money in their community..

The only way I think we can do it though, is Black business have to step their game up.. There are soul Food resturants that I refuse to go to because of stuff like service.. I refuse to go to Roscoes because they are always dirty.. I mean Roach crawl down the wall and onto your table dirty.. So I think it is a little bit of a Catch 22 for someone like me who doesn't own their own business..

i hear and understand where u comin from. i have friends and family members both black and hispanic that r usin that as an excuse as to y they cant succeed in life. i feel like in some cases its the fear of gettin out and people talkin shit about how they arnt real anymore, y bc they want to get out of the streets and have a more enjoyable and relaxed life not only for them but for their kids. its just stupid to me. i see some people gettin their kids ready to become gang members and how they praise that shit and the kids dont no no better so they follow suite.

then u got the kids who r forced into that shit bc they need to survive and help maintain their sibs. its a fucked up world but until we start to tell ourselves and start doin something about it we will never leave the streets. our mentality is too fucked up we r settelin for less and complainin about it when in fact we should be takin our ass to school and work everyday so that we can make it better. we complain about how the subburbs have it better then us. we have our own community and we dont take care of it. we dont go to pto's, county meetings none of that shit. we dont involve ourselves in things that have to do with us so of course we r goin to get played. i gotta stop for now but will go on later.

In your opinion. How influencial were groups like Poor Righteous teachers, De la Soul, LONS (leaders of the new school), Tribe called Quest? I question this because I was watching Yo Mtv Raps last night and they showed the Freestyle mix-up of those groups and I got to thinking about how the times have changed.. At what point did vulgarity become such a mainstay in hip hop.. Don't get me wrong I got a mouth like a sailor but it just seems like the content is getting worse and worse.. What's it gonna be like when My 4 year old is 12?? Remember arrested Development when Preach ws protecting the dignity of the female he was with.. Now, It seems like everyone wants to be the one disrespcting instead of preserving respect in our communities..

What made it worst is when somewhat established acts began to switch up, just to keep it....can't blame 'em!!!
Once music creativity was taken away from the artist started being made and cultivated in the front office, HIP HOP, R&B, and other tangible genres...LOST!!!
Thus, our current state of affairs.

ANother thing, creativity and expression ain't the same amongst the youngsters nowadays versus when we were the youngins; PEEP:

Soulja Boy (age 16)- smash hit "Crack dat" hot, but no staying power

Nas (circa 1990..age 16) "Live from the Barbeque verse" Timeless and pure classic...it was his arrival..and that nigga still here!!!

Let me break down for you what Puff did and how he did it and what effect it had and has on the new dudes...

So boom in the fall Biggie's album came out and you know the first single was over the hit record Juicy. Which was already a hit.

Then Biggie's album cover had a picture of a baby biggie. they had bit off nas. bite means to copy someone else's shit, by the way.

Like if we breakin or poppin' and hit you wit some ill footwork then you take my shit across town and try to rep with that shit but ain't know my man julio was in the crowd watching, he gon scream out "you bitin"
then everyone gon start laughin at you cuz guess what?

My fault, now when they had bit Nas baby cover concept heads was like oh shit, what the deal with that?

So then we all rockin our tapes and he got the jawn big poppa on there where they bit the Isley Brothers between the sheets song.

(side note: radio's primary fanbase is females 18-34. that's why all the wack shit shares chick friendly subject matter to gain radio play)

So boom it don't stop ("cuz we won't stop" - Puff Daddy), in 95 with Biggie in the forefront, Puff hit us with the Atom Bomb: One More Chance remix. New beat: El Debarge jawn that some would say Rashad Smith bit from Lord Finesse. Cuz Lord Finesse freaked it first.

But he wasn't talking about Versace, Cartier and gators.

Under Puff, Biggie was.

Although Biggie's rhymes was ill - now doubt he could rip no matter the subject - the content of rhyming had changed.

So here we are in the summer of '96 and the door is open for anybody to come through who talking about being a player, having versace, cristal, or diamonds.

He had versace.

A beeper. Cell phones. Drug rhymes and a beat that somebody had already rocked over:

Now it's late 96 and shit really is on fire.

So in 97 every month puff daddy had a "remix" featuring himself on the radio.
And mase came out. Oh wait I fucked that up. ma$e came out.
shit is mad fucked up by now and the RZA tried to fight back but the wheels were set in motion.

dudes where rhyming over songs that were already hits. talking nonsense about high fashion and cristal.

so now the tolerance was lowered.

DMX came out with "Where my dogs at?" Rhyming directly over Epmd's "Get the Bozack".

Puff Daddy and Ma$e rhymed over The message by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel

but dudes saw that and started to make their beats like him.

Jay-z connected with him.

Player-type crime rap connected with bubblegum beats equal a million records sold.

shit is ALL fucked up by now.

biting (and disrespecting) eric b. and rakim's classic while rapping as simplistic as possible.

Capitalizing off the ignorance of their people, the "no limit" squad did that record, "UNNNHH" some other bullshit, dropped an album by a gimmicky bi-polar no rhyme skills cat named "mystikal" and cleaned up.

Cashing in on half a billion.

Now Juvenile saw it was easy so he makes one of the most embarassing songs I've ever heard from my people called "Ha"

So boom now here come the neptunes.

What exactly did Reverend Wright say that should hurt Barack Obama's chances to become President? Barack Obama knows good and well that most of those white people think he is just another nigger. The Versace Wars Prequel.

I wanna share something with you.

Far too often (especially in the hood) debates go on forever without clear lines of communication being established.

No one stopping to listen. People just waiting to talk.

And at other times, arguments fester because someone may be privy to some info and never had a chance to share it before things spiral out of control. (very sitcomish).

In fact, (as I'm sure many of us have seen in the hood) I've seen two muvafuckas start off arguin' about one thing and end up fightin' over somethin' else.

Listen.

This is not about coasts or regions.

It's about the quality of the product.

The product being Hip-Hop music.

Sometimes old people are afraid of the youth, because in some cases the young do eat the old. And information maybe the only thing that the old can cling to.

And in a debate, the old accuse the young of ignorance because the young are uninformed about events that pre-date their birth or whatever's currently popular.

But how can the young know something if they are never told?

I learned one of my most valuable lessons in life from Isaac Hayes.

He said, "Young people have to express themselves."

That's like the truest shit I ever heard.

Now if a young person never battled a tape of Big Daddy Kane's "Set It Off" vs. Rakim Allah's "Lyrics Of Fury", if he never heard these songs, he still must express himself.

But most of these arguments stem from lack of knowledge and communication.

Let me lay everything out for you.

Hip-Hop music (key word MUSIC) is comprised of 3 primary elements: Rhymes, Scratching, and Beats.

True it all started in NY. But WHERE wasn't as important as WHAT.

WHAT did they start?

The first thing they started was diggin in a crate for an old or obscure record (goin to the store and buying one more) finding what is called a "break" -- that is when the singing stops and core of the music rocks for like say five seconds -- making this break repeat by either cutting up a duplicate of the record on a turntable or plugging the break into a sampler creating a beat.

The next thing they did was rhymed over the beat. But to earn the right to rock the mic, your rhymes had to be creative.

You couldn't jump on stage and be off beat. You couldn't grip the mic with ABC-rhymes like "I'm gettin' money. Ain't nuntin' funny. I'm a OG. That's how it be."

An emcee's job was to be creative with his rhymes.
And on the heirarchy of rhymes, the list is somewhat as follows:

1. Complexity (how many words or phrases are you rhyming?)

2. Delivery (how are you saying your rhymes?)

3. Creativity/Originality (are you freakin' what you are doing in a unique way?)

Stuff like this is sorta unspoken. But it is understood. It's more or less sold but never really told. Dig what I'm sayin'?

Now in 86 and 87 when Eric B. and Rakim came out, Rakim kinda single-handedly changed what serious emceeing was all about.

Super-complex, creative rhymes moved to forefront. And by the time Long Live the Kane was released, dope rhyming was forever changed.

Now for most of the folks that you hear screaming East Coast, East Coast this is the vital history that is always kept in mind.

This is how it was started and it was the tradition.

Every emcee that came out had to show and prove his abilty utter interesting rhymes on the microphone (also called "skills"), from Special Ed to NAS.

Just ask The Alkaholiks -- "Used to be about rhymes, all about rhymes..." I Got It Bad Y'all circa '92. and they are straight from Cali.

Most Hip-Hoppers weren't born yesterday and they didn't start banging hip hop when Jay-z came out.

I'd strongly recommend that you take a quick musical vacation into some of the early, more premium hip-hop that preceded the Urban Pop that you defend so passionately.

It really is a short history and the journey will be so much fun. Not to mention the new world of music that you'll expose yourself to.

To help you get started, I've come up with a list of the records you should get to help you appreciate this beautiful artform.

He told me straight up that it was because there were black people in the US that never had the rights we do. Then he told me the white version of why. I could never consolidate my father's ideas of black folks to what I was hearing in the music. In the end my blood ties won and I stopped listening to rap and started listening to dark angry white music. Metallica and Pantera and Slayer. Then I got into underground political punk rock. Then funk, then blues, then foilk and soul, then back to hip hop.
