First Eminem released “Crack a Bottle,” then videos for the jokey “We Made You” and deadly serious “3 A.M.” This past weekend, some fans may have found a way to hear a few more cuts from Relapse, Slim Shady’s first album in nearly five years. But Rolling Stone has listened to the entire album the way it was meant to be heard — and our official review of Eminem’s Relapse is right here.

In his four-star review, Rob Sheffield explores the true target of Relapse’s barbs: Eminem. After falling into a prescription-pill addiction that took him out the rap game and threatened to turn him into biggest adversary (his mom), Em is back, rhyming about Lunesta, Ambien and Vicodin with the brutal honesty of Richard Pryor’s 1982 Live on the Sunset Strip. The Dr. Dre beats are spare, the guest spots minimal — just brief cameos by 50 Cent and Dre.

But what Relapse has is hate and honesty. Eminem reveals that hospital trip for pneumonia in December 2007 was anything but (”That whole pneumonia thing/That was baloney/Was it the methadone, ya think?”), that his daughter Hailie found out passed out in his car with a bag of Three Musketeers bars, that he isn’t afraid to touch on a subject as volatile as childhood molestation: “Insane” begins, “I was born with a dick in my brain/Fucked in the head.”

Eminem is at his most brilliant when he’s addressing true anger and his personal demons. Tracks like “Stay Wide Awake” and “Same Song and Dance,” where he skewers pop cultural figures like Britney, Lindsay and Amy sound forced and played-out, Sheffield writes. But fortunately, Relapse shows the promise of The Slim Shady LP — and Em’s latest is a more painful, honest and vital record than anyone could have expected at this point in the MC’s career.

He was arrested Wednesday (April 29) and according to an Atlanta Police Department report, police found a stolen .40 caliber pistol in Zellars's SUV during a search of the vehicle following a traffic stop (the Sig Sauer handgun was loaded and had a round in the chamber). After cops discovered the gun, Zellars became "combative and non-compliant" and sought to flee. Officer Antonio Blasini pepper sprayed Zellars in the face, but the substance "had no immediate effect." Cops chased Zellars to a nearby parking garage, where he was struck with a police baton, again to no effect. In a bid to shake his pursuers, Zellars weaved through parked cars and climbed over the garage wall, jumping "25-30 feet to the ground." Zellars was booked into a Fulton County jail, where he remained until Saturday (May 9) when he made bail. Zellars, a predicate felon, has yet to be indicted on the gun and obstruction charges. However, if the gun case were to be handled by federal prosecutors, Zellars could easily be facing more than a decade in prison.

5 men convicted in Sears Tower attack plot

MIAMI -- Five men were convicted Tuesday of plotting to join forces with al-Qaida to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices in hopes of igniting an anti-government insurrection.

The jury in Miami acquitted another member of the so-called "Liberty City Six" in the sixth day of deliberations. Two previous trials ended in mistrials when jurors could not agree on the men's guilt or innocence.

They were arrested in June 2006 on charges of plotting terrorism with an undercover FBI informant they believed was from al-Qaida. Defense attorneys said terrorist talk recorded on dozens of FBI tapes was not serious and the men wanted only money.

Ringleader Narseal Batiste, 35, was the only one convicted of all four terrorism-related conspiracy counts, including plotting to provide material support to terrorists and conspiring to wage war against the U.S. Batiste, who was on the vast majority of hundreds of FBI audio and video tapes, faces up to 70 years in prison.

Batiste's right-hand man, 29-year-old Patrick Abraham, was convicted on three counts and faces 50 years behind bars. Convicted on two counts and facing 30 years are 24-year-old Burson Augustin, 25-year-old Rotschild Augustine and 33-year-old Stanley Grant Phanor. Naudimar Herrera, 25, was cleared of all four charges.

U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard set sentencing for July 26 for the five convicted men, most of whom are Haitian or have Haitian ancestry. They lived in Miami's downtrodden inner-city neighborhood known as Liberty City.

The jury endured a two-month trial, then had to restart deliberations last week after one juror was excused for illness and a second was booted off the panel for being uncooperative. After the verdicts were read, court security officials escorted the jury -- whose names were kept secret -- out of the building before they could be interviewed.

The arrests were initially hailed as a major success by President George W. Bush's administration, an example of disrupting potential attacks at the earliest possible stages. But two previous juries struggled with the lack of solid evidence indicating the men took any steps to pull off such major mass assaults, such as possessing bomb-making manuals or building blueprints.

Prosecutors focused on the group's intent as captured on dozens of FBI audio and video recordings. Batiste is repeatedly heard espousing violence against the U.S. government and saying the men should start a "full ground war" that would "kill all the devils."

"I want to fight some jihad," Batiste says on one tape.

A key piece of evidence is an FBI video of the entire group pledging an oath of allegiance, or "bayat," to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden in a March 16, 2006, ceremony led by an FBI informant posing as "Brother Mohammed" from al-Qaida.

But Batiste, who testified in all three trials, insisted he was only going along with Mohammed so he could obtain $50,000 or more for his struggling construction business and a nascent community outreach program. Batiste was leader of a Miami chapter of a sect known as the Moorish Science Temple, which combines elements of Christianity, Judaism and Islam and does not recognize the U.S. government's full authority.

Defense lawyers also claimed the case was an FBI setup driven by informants who manipulated the group.

"This is a manufactured crime," Batiste attorney Ana M. Jhones said earlier in the trial.

A seventh man who was acquitted after the first 2007 trial, 34-year-old Lyglenson Lemorin, is being deported to his native Haiti anyway. Less stringent immigration laws make it easier for U.S. officials to use the terrorism allegations against Lemorin

Zellars was booked into a Fulton County jail, where he remained until Saturday (May 9) when he made bail. Zellars, a predicate felon, has yet to be indicted on the gun and obstruction charges. However, if the gun case were to be handled by federal prosecutors, Zellars could easily be facing more than a decade in prison.

Alfamega Arrested On Felony Gun Charges & Attempted Escape, Faces 10 Years In Prison

Former Grand Hustle rapper Cedric "Alfamega" Zellars was recently arrested on felony gun and obstruction charges after an altercation with Georgia police late last month.

The 36 year-old was reportedly locked up upon learning of his dismissal from Grand Hustle by T.I. last week.

He was arrested April 29 and according to an Atlanta Police Department report, police found a stolen .40 caliber pistol in Zellars's SUV during a search of the vehicle following a traffic stop (the Sig Sauer handgun was loaded and had a round in the chamber). After cops discovered the gun, Zellars became "combative and non-compliant" and sought to flee. Officer Antonio Blasini pepper sprayed Zellars in the face, but the substance "had no immediate effect." Cops chased Zellars to a nearby parking garage, where he was struck with a police baton, again to no effect. In a bid to shake his pursuers, Zellars weaved through parked cars and climbed over the garage wall, jumping "25-30 feet to the ground." Zellars was booked into a Fulton County jail, where he remained until Saturday when he made bail. Zellars, a predicate felon, has yet to be indicted on the gun and obstruction charges. However, if the gun case were to be handled by federal prosecutors, Zellars could easily be facing more than a decade in prison. (The Smoking Gun)
Tip recently claimed he nor his company were aware of Alfa's past history as an informant.

Prior to Tip, DJ Drama said the Grand Hustle CEO would address the actions of Alfa to the media.

"I spoke to Tip about it and Tip is definitely preparing to speak to the media about the situation," Drama explained in an interview. "And as boss man, I would definitely honor him to make a statement before I make a statement, but there's definitely a consensus among [Grand Hustle]...When you put yourself as a public figure and you put yourself out there to represent one thing and it comes out that you represent the opposite, the public has the right to be aware of that...We all know hip-hop is about being true to yourself and being true to your name. Ice Cube said it a long time ago -- it's about being real with yourself whoever you may be." (XXL Mag)
Records leaked online last week which showed Alfamega worked as a DEA informant.

Court records show he began working with law enforcement officials after he was sentenced in September 1995 to 110 months in a federal gun case. During his cooperation, Zellars met with a DEA agent and a federal prosecutor, and subsequently testified at trial. In return for his help, Zellars had 18 months shaved off his prison term when he was resentenced in July 1997. (SOHH)

Black Broadcasters Decry Proposed Tax Before Capitol Hill Vote

Radio personality Tom Joyner and other leading minority radio broadcasters held a congressional staff briefing on Capitol Hill today to discuss the adverse impact a proposed performance tax would have on minority-owned radio stations in America.

The bill, scheduled to come before the full House Judiciary Committee Wednesday, would impose a royalty on music aired on the radio and, some opponents say, spell the end of black radio.

The Performance Rights Act, sponsored by Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., would require radio stations to pay a fee to everyone who performs on a record, from the composer to the artist(s) to background musicians and singers to the person or company that owns the copyright to the song. That would be in addition to fees that broadcasters already pay to artist associations ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.

Radio station owners, professional broadcast associations and other groups who oppose the measure say that rather than rewarding the background musicians and writers, whom the record labels contend are not adequately compensated through the other fees, as much as 50 percent of the new fees collected will go directly into the pocket of record label owners -- many of whom are headquartered outside the U.S.

Cathy Hughes, founder and board chairman of Radio One, and Joyner say the bill, also called the "performance tax," could almost certainly spell the end for urban radio because the additional costs would discourage the activities that help promote artists' work.

"It will put a majority of black-owned stations out of business," Hughes said Tuesday on "The Tom Joyner Morning Show."

"In terms of income, it would impact my income by 35 percent at a time when we're already struggling," Hughes said. "Everyone at Radio One just took a salary cut, and we have implemented furloughs" every other Friday.

Joyner said very small stations, particularly gospel stations, that don't make a lot of money and sometimes gross as little as $100,000 a year would be devastated if they had to pay even an extra $5,000 annually in fees.

Supporters of the bill say that they simply want a level playing field in which digital services, including the Internet and satellite radio, are already paying the fee, while broadcasters do not. Smaller radio stations -- which include a lot of black-owned and small market broadcasters -- with smaller operating margins say they simply cannot afford the additional fees.

In a separate hearing on the Senate version of the bill back in March, several lawmakers pointed out that most recording artists would get nothing from the royalty because most musicians' music never makes the airwaves and that the law may ultimately protect only a small elite. Furthermore, 50 percent of performance royalties go to the copyright holder, which would be the record labels in most cases, not the artists, musicians or composers.

Hughes accused Conyers of "turning a deaf ear" to the plight of black radio by introducing the bill and holding a hearing in March "with no black ownership at the hearing."

She said that during a meeting in Conyers' office with opponents of the measure that the congressman "turned up his CD player so loud that we could not hear anyone talk ... It was turned up to teenage volume."

Conyers' office was flooded Tuesday with phone calls and e-mails from opponents to the measure. Broadcasters opposed to the bill have urged listeners to call Conyers' Washington and Detroit offices at (202) 225-5126 or (313) 961-5670 or e-mail the congressman at john.conyers@mail.house.gov.

Hiphopisking – for real, my teen came home one day with a pink tshirt on, and I’m like “what are you doing” and of course he hits me with that Camron is rocking it, it’s the movement. Then my dad crazy self bought the Gods some pink and blue rocawear sweaters and when I flipped he said it was because it said “rocawear and my son had requested that brand”, made him take them back also. I'm from the south...I've lived in both Texas & Louisiana and I can honestly say.....NY is the home of the spittaz! When I first got into in hip hop i was bred off of everything that was coming from the West coast & outta Houston! It wasnt until I was around 16 one my my niggaz who was like 21 @ the time put me on to east coast music. I mean my nigga had me on everything! Nas, Keith Murray, G Dep,Talib Kweli, Joe Budden, Mobb Deep, Az etc.

To this day I thank I'm for doing that for me cuz it just opened my eyes to what music was really about. Not just about material shit, women, guns & drugs....but brothaz was really using this shit as a tool to touch people & get messages out there! Its only a hand full of kats in the south who actually have REAL SKILL...the rest just snappin they fuckin fingers or talken about the 30inch rims they sittin on.

Y'all, I watched a documentary on PBS last night called "Bloods and Crips - Made In America. It was off the hook! Easily one of the least biased and accurate tellings of the violent history of LA. I had no idea that there was so much political history there. The gubment realy f***ed y'all over there, martial law style.

Realist - Got a story for ya...back in the early nineties I hated the Oilersa....I was a HUGE 49ers fan...yup. They hated me here in Texas cuz every year it went down between SF and Dallas.
