On
September 7th, people started leaving the Mike Tyson/Bruce
Seldon fight that was held at the MGM grand. Tupac
Shakur was in attendance that fateful night.
The fight, which started at 8 p.m., lasted 109 seconds,
with Mike Tyson being declared the winner in a fight that
many feel was thrown by Bruce Seldon. The controversy
surrounding that fight was nothing compared to the events
about to transpire.
Between 8-9
p.m., Tupac and his bodyguard were involved in an altercation
with a man believed to be Orlando Anderson, a local gang
member, who’s cronies had allegedly stolen a Death Row
medallion from an employee of the infamous label. Security
catches the incident on tape, showing Suge Knight, who
was on probation, kicking and participating in the beating
of Orlando Anderson. Knight later served over 5 years
for this incident.
“All the n#####
who change the world, die in violence. They don’t die
in regular ways,” Tupac said shortly before his death.
As Shakur
and Knight were eastbound on Flamingo Road, a vehicle
pulls along side of the car Knight and Shakur are riding
in and pumps 13 shots in the car. After the shooting,
Knight makes a U-turn and heads west on Flamingo. Police
reached the car on the strip where it was caught in traffic.
An ambulance then picked up Shakur and Knight transporting
them to University Medical Center, where Shakur underwent
the first three operations. Seven days later on Friday
13th, 1996, Tupac Amaru Shakur was pronounced dead due
to the gunshot wounds.
The following
years saw a vicious battle over Tupac’s Estate between
his mother Afeni Shakur and Suge Knight. Afeni Shakur
came out the victor, gaining control of Tupac’s estate.
Tupac Amaru Shakur is now the biggest selling rapper of
all time, with over 33 million sold to date, eclipsing
the closest behind him, The Notorious B.I.G., who was
also gunned down. B.I.G. has an impressive amount as well,
with almost 20 million to date.
"The
misconceptions are that Tupac was a rapper, the Tupac
wasn’t political and that Tupac was a gangster,"
Afeni Shakur told our good friend Davey
D. "Primarily I really think that time will take
care of that. I have faith in Tupac’s legend. I really
believe in the divinity of legends. I believe that God
choose Tupac and I believe that no human being can destroy
his image, his legend, his life, his music or his work.
So in reality I don’t care what people say, because I
truly believe that God sent him here. He sent him with
a mission. He fulfilled his mission and he went back where
he came from."
Tupac’s mother
recently unveiled plans for the Tupac Shakur Performing
