Are you excited that Robin Thicke’s making a comeback? I am! That classic sound of R&B is hard to come by. Hip-Hop based R&B is so dominant today, you have to reach back in your musical archives and pull out something old to give you a classic R&B fix. Just think about how an album from Jodeci, R. Kelly, EnVogue, New Edition, or SWV makes you feel? Priceless…Yeah, I said R. Kelly – the ’90s R. Kelly! But enough about that let’s focus on what’s new.Robin Thicke’s single “Magic” leaked on the internet a little over two weeks ago, and I must say I’m impressed. Despite its recycled sound that I heard originally in Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up,” then in Kanye West’s#### “Touch The Sky,” again in Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got,” and now Robin Thicke’s “Magic,” the song still possesses its own originality. My theory is if you feel the need to copy someone else’s blueprint, just make sure it’s HOT! And “Magic” is HOT!!! The song makes you want to get up and dance. The live instrumentation of the conga, horn, violin and piano blares while Robin sings about how his magic will cure the pain of past relationships and bring about pleasure and happiness. The last time I saw Robin Thicke in concert, it was during the Beyonce tour last year. During his performance, he came from behind the piano and danced a majority of the show in his infamous black and white getup. His dancing definitely caught me off guard, because I didn’t know that Robin had moves! Not Beyonce moves, but moves. So it leads me to imagine what the video for “Magic” will be like since Robin likes to show everyone that he can dance. Ha Ha! “Magic” is the first release off Robin’s third album Something Else, and I am looking forward to what else the album will entail. I’m sure The Neptune’s Pharell is somewhere in the mix, so who knows what we can expect. Until next week, y’all enjoy this week’s Sunday Selection – “Magic”
