(AllHipHop News) The electoral authorities in Haiti have postponed today’s announcement of presidential candidates approved to run, while they deliberate the legality of Wyclef Jean’s bid to run for President. Authorities were supposed to finalize the list yesterday (August 18th), but they need more time to deliberate the challenges lodged against several potential candidates, including Wyclef Jean. Opposition is questioning Wyclef Jean’s citizenship with the country, claiming he is not eligible because he has not had five consecutive years of residency in Haiti, in addition to tax compliance issues. Reuters reports that other candidates, like Jacques Edouard Alexis and Leslie Voltaire are also being scrutinized for their eligibility to lead the country, which was devastated by a 7.0 earthquake in January that left up to 300,000 people dead on the tiny, impoverished island. Wyclef Jean claims that he has maintained residency in Haiti for over five years. In related news, Wyclef announced that he was in hiding yesterday, after receiving emailed death threats over his bid for President in the election, which is slated for November 28th. According to reports, Wyclef is currently hiding in a secret location in Haiti out of fears for his safety.
