(AllHipHop News) The family of late music executive Shakir Stewart is honoring his memory and legacy, with a new empowerment fund.

Shakir’s mother, Mrs. Portia Labrie and Saint Mary’s College High School have announced the establishment of the Shakir Stewart empowerment fund.

Shakira graduated from St. Mary’s in 1991, where he actively participated in student government and honed his leadership skills.

Those traits surfaced again as he entered into the music business after graduating from Morehouse College.

By the age of 24, Shakir had earned the title of Senior Vice-President of Hitco Music Publishing Company.

His last position was Executive Vice President of Island Def Jam, before he tragically committed suicide in 2008 at the age of 34.

During his short career, Shakir Stewart helped transform pop culture, by signing or discovering artists like Ciara, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross and Beyonce

“With this scholarship, we would like to continue Shakir’s passion for giving by providing students with the opportunity of a Saint Mary’s education,” a rep for The Shakir Stewart Endowment Fund told AllHipHop.com. “This has become the life mission of Shakir’s mother and she is seeking help from all the people that were a part of her son’s
iconic music career.”
