Hold just one conversation with Dizzy Wright and one thing becomes immediately clear; don’t let his age fool you. Young and gifted; he’s armed with both a plan as well as the actual talent to back it up.
Since catching the attention of independent label Funk Volume, Dizzy has been a roll. To date he has already toured both nationally as well as internationally, and recently landed on XXL’s coveted 2013 Freshmen cover; even more impressive is the fact that he was voted on as a fan favorite based solely off the strength of his rapidly growing fan base.
Not bad for an artist whose first album, the well received SmokeOut Conversations, was only released in 2012.

AllHipHop: While you’ve actually lived in a multitude of places you are most closely associated with Vegas; was it difficult to break out of a region with little national attention?
Dizzy: I felt like a lot of people in the city were doing the same thing, same sound. Everybody wants the same thing. So in 2011 all I did was shows. You basically have to start performing outside of this city in order to make it out of it.
AllHipHop: You were introduced to the industry at an early age due to your mother’s former role as a prominent concert promoter; how did this affect your views on the game?
Dizzy: I feel like I got an early glimpse at what it was like. That’s why I don’t want to go major, because they’ll push me or try to mold me into what they feel I should be, or should be talking about. I just like to do me.
AllHipHop: Since joining forces with indie label Funk Volume you have worked heavily with other label mates including; Swizz, DJ Hoppa, Jarren Benton, and Hopsin, how easy was the transition for you?
Dizzy: I was introduced to Hop through Dame and Swizz. They took me out to vibe and just see if I would even get along with dude. We had about a 45 minute conversation, about what I don’t remember, he was kind of stand offish at first but in the end he was cool as f###. We been vibing ever since. As far as Funk Volume is concerned, I love it; they give me my space, so I work hard in return.
AllHipHop: You’ve already gotten the chance to experience life on the road as a touring artist, both with Hop as well as your own showcases; how has that experience been for you?
Dizzy: I got to travel overseas for a tour that Hop headlined. Iceland, Germany, Australia; I was able to build a connection with actual fans outside of the internet. It’s all about building those connections. Once I dropped my own project I instantly got right on the road. Some sold out, some were smaller, but everyone there f##### with me. They knew the music. I just like being on the road, I’m a little different; I’m just trying to work enough to be comfortable and take care of my daughter.
AllHipHop: Speaking of your project, you released your first official one SmokeOut Conversations in 2012; was it received in the way that you anticipated?
Dizzy: It actually did more than what I wanted it to do. It got the ball rolling for everything. Since then I’ve been consistently working and touring. That’s my life. My newest project The Golden Age Mixtape was actually put together right before I went on the road.
AllHipHop: How have things changed for you since landing in XXL’s 2013 Freshman class? Have you seen an increased interest in your work?

Dizzy: To be honest it’s hard to say because I’ve been so preoccupied on the road; but they put together some shows for all of the artists that made it. I’m still just taking it all in. I’m living life and still learning. I’m all about doing you. It’s hard for me to put myself in any type of category because I like to talk about everything. Things I’ve experienced, things I’ve seen.
AllHipHop: So what lies ahead? At just 22 you already seem far ahead of your time, is there anything that you feel sets you apart from some of your counterparts?
Dizzy: I like to turn up just like everyone else, but that’s not all that I’m about either. I don’t say that I’m great, but I feel as if I could be. I believe in giving yourself room to grow into being great. You become great when you gain experience. There’s so much life to live, but if you haven’t been outside of the hood you may never get to experience it. We just confirmed another tour, new music coming out. I’m just trying to grow and continue to make music.
