Welcome back to the Odd Side, a column that explores the effects of Hip Hop’s transformation through different sounds.
This week, we’ll be checking out some dope artists from the UK. Their sound may be different from what we are used to, but don’t let that stop you from giving these artists a listen. If you listen deeply, you can hear that there’s several similarities between what we are used to and what is popular in the UK scene. Check some of these dope artists out.
Skepta ft Young Lord – It Ain’t Safe
Skepta is known for his success in the UK grime scene, and his single “It Ain’t Safe” still has that sound manifested within it’s beat. However, with a cover reminiscent of old NWA coverart, a hard hitting beat, and some gangster ass lyrics, “It Ain’t Safe” is a unique track that sounded like it could be in an old school hood movie.
Snakehips
When you hear that classic AZ quote from “Life’s a B####” mixed with echoes and video game-like sounds, it’s a Snakehips cut. This London production duo brings together the worlds of electric dance music and 90s hip hop, forming a unique sound that is upbeat and just flat out fly. There’s only a few original tracks that are released by Snakehips. Most of their tracks are mixes for companies like HYPETRAK and BBC Radio and a catalogue of remixes. However, the few original tracks are gems. Let’s hope we can get a full project from Snakehips.
MNEK
We in the States might not know about MNEK, but this UK singer has been popping in his native land. His single “The Rhythm” caught our attention with its upbeat production and boisterous vocals, but it’s not the only track that needs a listen. Songs like “Wrote A Song” keeps MNEK’s fast and groovy with influence of Deep House, while “In Your Clouds” slows it down to make a classic vibe of 90’s R&B.
